@@minenhlemthembu3590I’ll be 27 in January and was blessed to attend a reading of Mayas as a middle schooler with my grandmother. Poetry as an art and National past time really died off. One thing about Tyler Perry movies, a Black woman is going to be battered by her rich husband and a blue collar worker who could be a model is going to be there to build her back up 😭
I must say that over the past 5 years or so, Tyler Perry has been getting a lot of criticism for his films not progressing. It’s funny because watching you - people outside of black culture - react to the movie brings me back to why his earlier work was so great and hit so hard. The stories don’t hit this powerfully in his recent work, and THAT’S what is missed about his work. Thank y’all for reacting and allowing me to remember why his work was so amazing to begin with!
idk I kinda agree with the boondocks, a lot.. if not all of his earlier work consists of some evil dark skin bald dude who abuses the female lead, and some light skin savior comes in out of nowhere and saves the day, and then Madea comes in randomly throughout to say some ghetto shit that sets black folk back 20 years, compared to his newer stuff, his old work's are masterpiece's, but on it's own, it's still not progressive for the culture or cinema, nor is it written in a way that is refreshing, it follows a very similar formula every time
@@yalldumb2387 Still, there is something impactful about the earlier ones I'd say. I feel like Medea is there to draw the audience to seeing heavy dramas that reflect problems in the community. Not progressive or masterful cinema by any means but there is something to just showing a glimpse behind some closed doors that a lot of people don't wanna acknowledge and then tacking on a happy ending that many don't get.

Lisa is very beautiful but her sister with the two kids is EXTREMLY Beautiful to me. Her beauty lights up the screen and is so natural. Would love to see that actress in more things.
The scene with the grits is folk legend in the community, mainly because of the legendary Al Green. He was unknowingly seeing a married woman with 3 kids. After finding out he broke it off, but she didn't take rejection well. One night while he was in his bathroom bathing, she broke in his home and threw boiling grits over him, causing 2nd degree burns and multiple skin graphs. She then shot herself. They played Al Green's Love and Happiness during the kitchen scene to reference Al Green.

That's because in the USA... "black movies" were always deemed to not be for anyone else but black people. It wasn't even marketed to non black audiences or promoted in their communities. While media that featured mostly white casts was always marketed to everyone.

The woman escaping her soon to be husband in the middle of the night hit different after the Cassie video. These things really be happening every single day.
Since I was a kid, my dad has told me to use grits if a man hits me. He said make sure it's really soupy and boiling. The grits will stick to their skin and to continue to burn.
RIP to Cicely Tyson. RIP to Maya Angelou. Legends I loved n respected. Tyler Perry will forever have my heart for these beautiful representations of black stories. Thank you, guys, for reacting to these classics. Love from South Africa.
The grits is an "ode" to what happened to Al Green (the Motown singer, famous song Love and Happiness). His married girlfriend was mad he wouldn't marry her, so she threw grits on him while he laid on the couch. Tyler's movie always have a lot of cultural references from movies to older society references. Like the " All my life I had to, Harpo line" is from the Color Purple movie
People can say what they want about Tyler but the man is talented at the end of the day. Especially as an actor. It’s already pretty difficult to play one character, but able to play 3 characters in the same movie multiple times is impressive
Not gonna lie, I found this channel because of y’all reacting to Tyler Perry‘s diary of a mad black woman. I just wanna say I appreciate y’all for it because people to act like the movies are horrible or low quality and a decent portion of them were actually pretty good. If y’all wanted more suggestions of Madea movies to react to I would suggest Madea homecoming, Madea family funeral, Madea goes to jail or Tyler Perry’s I can do bad all by myself.
I think Tyler started out strong in his filmmaking, but things have deteriorated over the years just due to being repetitive. His early works are genuinely good though.

Cicely Tyson owned every screen she ever appeared on. Don't worry. If you keep watching the movies you'll get more Madea. Some of them are over the top but there's enough drama going on to keep that edge. 😂😂
Also, for reference...the lawn mower guy did have a story. On the DVD, his scenes are part of the deleted footage. His wife is the friend that was with the sisters for their spa day...and the man he hugged at the family reunion is his father. He was reconnecting with his dad and fixing some issues with his wife. Its odd editing but his storyline was left out.
I don’t know if anyone else covered this, or not. But the show that Joe was reacting to on the TV was an old sitcom series called “Good Times” When he asked “Lawd, What make people be so mean to children?” He was responding about a character called “Penny” from the Good Times series. She was a victim of Child abuse 😢
The reason why Tyler Perry is so successful is because he tells real-life stories. The secret hidden stories that my people go through, that I went through. The dark tragedies of family and the secrets that we don't talk about. He is truly a visionary
Just wanted to say how much I appreciate the channel for reacting to these early Tyler Perry movies. Being black and from the south, the plays and the films were staples in the majority of our households and it’s so cool seeing the perspectives of people outside of “the culture”. You guys have actually rekindled my fondness for these movies.
18:14 is so random but it always sends me 🤣. Totally agree with you that the actress who plays Lisa (Rochelle Aytes) is stunningly beautiful. You might remember her from White Chicks, she played the reporter Denise Porter that Kevin got all goo goo eyes over.
This reaction really reminded me how many references and experiences people just wouldn’t get here when they’re not black 😭 not recognizing maya angelou and cicely tyson at first is especially egregious but i’m glad you guys enjoyed this one all the same! this is probably my favorite Madea movie! Hoping for “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” next 🤞🏾
Most Madea movies have heavy drama, but she’s there to give some good advice and comedic relief. After a very intense scene, she pops on the screen to make you laugh.
"She's just owning the screen." Folks, that is the legendary Cicely Tyson. GOOGLE HER. I saw the most beautiful portrait of her in the National Portrait Museum in DC.
I love that y’all are watching these. Not all Tyler Perry movies are a plus but they def hold a place in history of black cinema. Also, mind blown how many of these well known actors y’all aren’t pointing out. I’m like that’s Boris Kodjoe lol.
I'm already obsessed with the beginning of Madea/Tyler perry movies, and you guys reacting to them is sooo exciting, please do the family that preys, Acrimony and more Tyler perry
1:18:56 Yeah, the funny thing about the lawn-mow guy is he actually had a whole subplot that got deleted from the final cut to the movie. Then again it was about his strained relationship with his father and probably got cut for time. So that probably explains why he got so many closeups 😭😭 and I forgot most of the deleted scenes but I believe it also showed that he was already dating Vanessa’s friend (the woman he was with at the end).
I grew up on Tyler Perry's stage plays (they were videoed) All of this story lines deal with these types of deep issues. The non-musical Movies that have come out are a lot more lighthearted. His shows got me through a lot in my life. Glad you guys are going through these~!
You reminded us of how good these movies are because he will not change the formula ans we all suffering for it.😂but its nice to remember why we liked them and him❤
One of my favourite Madeia films! I'm an artist myself, and to this day Frankie's way of painting still stayed with me. Whenever I do something with a touch of abstract concepts in my work, that one scene where he painted the red over her chest to represent her pain always comes up in my mind.
When I saw Johnny Gill was the wedding singer, I fanned out 😩 I’m also so glad we were blessed by Maya Angelou and Cicely Tyson. Both of these women were trailblazers for the AA community. May they both rest in peace ❤️
Madea may be crass, mean and downright angry. But she effing cares about her family. Blood or not. And of course. She was born 6 foot 5 and 250 lbs lol she had to be tough. And she down for business. Also gotta say, mama's speech at the end. That was something else.
Not Al Green's wife. She was a fan who began sleeping with him. He was not aware she was married and moved on. She showed up at his home one night, distraught because she said she left her husband and children to be with him. He calmed her down and thought everything was okay and went to take a shower, when the lady threw scalding hot grits on him. She then went back into the guest bedroom and killed herself.
I've been thru abuse, and this movie always gets me even worse than diary of a mad black woman does. Being too afraid to tell anyone because you're ashamed is so real. 😭
Wow dope that you guys are checking out the Tyler Perry movies! Can’t wait to see you guys react to Why did I get married?, and Madea goes to Jail one day!
I remember watching this movie when I was younger and it always spoke alot to me. When I got older my mom who's a bus driver met my step-dad who was also a bus driver at the time and they really bonded. The first thing he taught me was how to cook the things his mother taught him to cook when he was young. Learning how to make his style of Grits was very heartwarming for me. He's taught me so much since.
So dope to see ya’ll reacting to Black movies. The more ya’ll watch, the more ya’ll will understand the references. For instance, the “all my life I had to fight,” was from The Color Purple. I loved this.
The scene playing on the TV Joe was watching is from a LEGENDARY episode of Good Times starring Janet Jackson as Penny.. Her mother was abusive and that episode was either the first time its revealed to the audience, or the episode where she burns her with an iron.
Man, I clicked on this so fast when I saw it. And you're the absolute BEST for making this YT edit as long as you possibly can without getting into trouble.
Yeah that's incredible! The lady giving the monologue at the family reunion is the late.. great..iconic legend..Cicely Tyson. She was nothing short of masterful.
I can do bad all by myself. That is another Madea movie which is my favorite. The music from Mary J. Blige is so good as she also plays a role in the movie.

@@lessismore8533 I think mine was in middle school
I am shooketh that they didnt immediately recognize Maya Angelou
Me too😂😂😂
listen that moment in the bedroom when the secrets came out almost destroyed a community....the actresses delivered!!!
I didn't know that Imma look up and see if TH-cam has them scenes after this
51:43 The legends Maya Angelou & Cicely Tyson!! rip to both
I don’t know if anyone else covered this, or not. But the show that Joe was reacting to on the TV was an old sitcom series called “Good Times” When he asked “Lawd, What make people be so mean to children?” He was responding about a character called “Penny” from the Good Times series. She was a victim of Child abuse 😢
I love when others notice those little perks that Tyler adds. Penny was played by an adorable Janet Jackson 🫶
Janet "Penny" Jackson!!
Cicely Tyson and Mya Angelou.. RIP to two American ICONS
18:14 is so random but it always sends me 🤣.
Totally agree with you that the actress who plays Lisa (Rochelle Aytes) is stunningly beautiful. You might remember her from White Chicks, she played the reporter Denise Porter that Kevin got all goo goo eyes over.
she's so beautiful wow
Yeah I don't think they realize that but jaby definitely thought she was beautiful on white chicks when he watched it too
This reaction really reminded me how many references and experiences people just wouldn’t get here when they’re not black 😭 not recognizing maya angelou and cicely tyson at first is especially egregious but i’m glad you guys enjoyed this one all the same! this is probably my favorite Madea movie! Hoping for “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” next 🤞🏾
Most Madea movies have heavy drama, but she’s there to give some good advice and comedic relief. After a very intense scene, she pops on the screen to make you laugh.
Its Red Shirt being in love with the Lisa character. I love it. 😂😂😍
RIP to the great Maya Angelou @1:06:58
"She's just owning the screen." Folks, that is the legendary Cicely Tyson. GOOGLE HER. I saw the most beautiful portrait of her in the National Portrait Museum in DC.
YASSSSS KEEP THE TYPER PERRY MOVIES COMING !!!!!!
Can’t wait for you guys to get to
“Why Did I Get Married”
& “Daddy’s Little Girls” !
Right, Why Did I Get Married reaction, is what I am waiting for.
Oh I can’t wait for them to see that dinner scene!! It’s legendary!! 😂
Angela will forever be my icon for that scene where she gets secrets revealed.
@@folamimorris574Sameee
That's a poem by the late great Maya Angelo. I was thrilled to see her giving the poem at the wedding
I love that y’all are watching these. Not all Tyler Perry movies are a plus but they def hold a place in history of black cinema. Also, mind blown how many of these well known actors y’all aren’t pointing out. I’m like that’s Boris Kodjoe lol.
🕊️🕊️ RIP Maya Angelou & Cicely Tyson. I'm so glad this was one of their last projects
I'm already obsessed with the beginning of Madea/Tyler perry movies, and you guys reacting to them is sooo exciting, please do the family that preys, Acrimony and more Tyler perry
The lil gurl she takes in is Keke Palmer.
I just realized Shemar Moore from the last one and the main Woman here are together in their tv show S.W.A.T thats crazyyyy
They were also married on Criminal Minds
@@SandraMorris51 danggg now that's crazy
When he said “Why doesn’t she seem happy about the roses? I’d be happy.” I was like Oh you about to find out 😂😂😂
DADDY'S LITTLE GIRLS!! My black soul is so happy to see you watch our cinema
Blaire was great in this movie, to the point that he's made me uneasy in anything I've seen him in since I saw this when it came out.😅
Same, this movie *ruined* Blair Underwood for me! 😂
Whew Asunder is worse than this lol he was so not well but so fine as well 😂😂😂
1:18:56 Yeah, the funny thing about the lawn-mow guy is he actually had a whole subplot that got deleted from the final cut to the movie. Then again it was about his strained relationship with his father and probably got cut for time. So that probably explains why he got so many closeups 😭😭 and I forgot most of the deleted scenes but I believe it also showed that he was already dating Vanessa’s friend (the woman he was with at the end).
This was a PERFECT choice to continue your Madea reaction series. I love this movie. It meant a lot to me as a child.
Bro Ms Cecily Tyson's monologue was simply incredible. True legend
Cicely Tyson was in Diary of a Mad Black Woman. She was Helen (main character) mother. She was in the nursing home.
Y’all are right…Tyler Perry is actually a really good actor. I’m not surprised he doesn’t explore it more
He is really good when it’s not his own material. He was good in gone girl
@@jocelyngipson7882 and Alex Cross
@@jocelyngipson7882he rocks as Madea too!..
The “I loves Harpo” is a reference to the original “The Color Purple” with Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover
Yessssss yessss more Madea movies!!!! And don’t be shy watch some of the plays too😂😂 the plays are sometimes better than the movies
The plays are incredible! I love the movies too but you’re right. The plays sometimes outshine the film.
Those plays hit so different 😂😂😂
The plays are definitely better in my book!
Am I the only one that wants them to react to the MADEA PLAYS!? The true comedy was there. Made a Goes to Jail was my favorite play
Yes I just commented that! My favorite was class reunion or the Christmas one
Dude won't be hitting her again. Not because he changed his ways, but because I'm pretty sure she broke both his arms with that skillet.
Lmaoo
Why Did I Get Married has to be next! Literally my favorite movie ever.
You dont know how maya angelou looks like! Well, thats maya angelou doing the poem at the wedding
I grew up on Tyler Perry's stage plays (they were videoed) All of this story lines deal with these types of deep issues. The non-musical Movies that have come out are a lot more lighthearted.
His shows got me through a lot in my life.
Glad you guys are going through these~!
boris actually learned how to drive a bus for this film. the directors commentary is so good.
You reminded us of how good these movies are because he will not change the formula ans we all suffering for it.😂but its nice to remember why we liked them and him❤
Tyler Perry loves the color purple and he randomly quotes The Color Purple in his movies
loveeeee that y’all are reacting to this 😭
The reference that Madea made on the bus of the “all my life I had to fight” monologue was from the Color Purple
Very famously, singer Al Green's wife threw grits on him.
SHE DID????
@@mandarinclemmie
His girlfriend, yes. She then ended her life afterwards. We don’t root for her though. She did it because he wouldn’t marry her.
That's why they're playing Al Green's song during this scene.
Yep
Not Al Green's wife. She was a fan who began sleeping with him. He was not aware she was married and moved on. She showed up at his home one night, distraught because she said she left her husband and children to be with him. He calmed her down and thought everything was okay and went to take a shower, when the lady threw scalding hot grits on him. She then went back into the guest bedroom and killed herself.
The Grits reference is from the real life incident where 70’s soul/gospel singer Al Green’s ex- girlfriend threw a pot of boiling grits on him!
The song that is playing during the “Grits” incident, is Al Green!
Al Green one of the greatest soul/gospel singers!
I've been thru abuse, and this movie always gets me even worse than diary of a mad black woman does. Being too afraid to tell anyone because you're ashamed is so real. 😭
So true
Tyler Perry played the role of Brian,Madea, & joe he’s so talented.
Wow dope that you guys are checking out the Tyler Perry movies! Can’t wait to see you guys react to Why did I get married?, and Madea goes to Jail one day!
The woman who did the poem at the wedding is the late and great American poet Maya Angelou
Every time I watch this movie I end up in tears at the end because of Maya Angelou. She was such an amazing woman and poet. I truly do miss her.
“Girls gone wild, senior edition” always take me tf out 😂😂😂😂
I remember watching this movie when I was younger and it always spoke alot to me. When I got older my mom who's a bus driver met my step-dad who was also a bus driver at the time and they really bonded. The first thing he taught me was how to cook the things his mother taught him to cook when he was young. Learning how to make his style of Grits was very heartwarming for me. He's taught me so much since.
A family that preys, and why did i get married 1&2, Madea goes to jail are all excellent 👌🏾.
A family that preys is a MUST WATCH
Man, I clicked on this so fast when I saw it. And you're the absolute BEST for making this YT edit as long as you possibly can without getting into trouble.
Yeah that's incredible! The lady giving the monologue at the family reunion is the late.. great..iconic legend..Cicely Tyson. She was nothing short of masterful.
Tyler Perry’s plays has more comedy than the movies. I hope you guys will react to them one day. 🥰
The "harpo beat me" reference on the school bus scene was from The Color Purple.
I can do bad all by myself. That is another Madea movie which is my favorite. The music from Mary J. Blige is so good as she also plays a role in the movie.
Oh snaps!! "I can do Bad All by Myself" is a huge classic! One of my favorite Tyler Perry movies, along with "Meet the Browns." 🙏🏽💪
