I was bless to meet ggg twice. My buddy Jonathan esquivel was his sparring partner for both canelo fights. I year before that, i went to vegas and paid to meet him at a boxing expo where we took some pictures and he signed my winning boxing glove. When i was in big bear to watch their sparring, he was super kind and greeted everyone. He was snobby and stuck up, was a total opposite. For my wedding in 2018, i told my boy jonathan to have him signed another pair of boxing gloves for me and he also signed my collage of pictures that i took with him in vegas with my wife. And on that picture he signed and wrote "congrats on your wedding, GGG"... that was so dope. Great boxer but even a better human.
GGG was criminally under-rated... IMO. He was probably the most ducked middleweight ever. His big fights coming only after other fighters considered him "past his prime".
I hate that he wasn't given that decision in the first Canelo fight. He would've been universally recognized as the P4P King and Face of Boxing. Bad scorecards changed history.
@eu-daemonic Because the Canelo fights were by far biggest of his career and had he been given the first one, he may have been given more respect. Just look at Bivol. No casual cared about him before he beat Canelo and now many know his name and how good he is
@@mavenmaven4513 those fights aren't comparable though. bivol dominated canelo, ggg on the other hand had his hands full. i had ggg edging out canelo the first fight but it could easily have been a draw. but this is all besides the point. it feels like ggg fans aren't actually fans but similar to bivol they are people who dislike canelo and simply use him as a husk for their hatred. lets watch videos like these and simply appreciate and acknowledge the man's talents.
Terrence Crawford is an entirely different style of fighter, but he keeps his chin tucked and eyes forward like GGG and can take heavy shots, too. He also has a very strong swivel jab and occupies an opponent's high guard to attack openings. It's amazing how great fighters can be so different but have strong similarities.
2:05 super important to notice it’s not JUST him cross stepping vs not in stance. All of GGG’s style is dependent on geometry. He’s a literal genius with understanding ring geometry. without it, he’d lose many fights . This was the rare time he fought a guy who was just as good at ring geometry. Gennady uses his aggressive ring cut offs as a defensive mechanism - more for intimidation than anything but also to keep the facade of distance never outside of boxing range. Another fighter who he was highly effective at this while paying the price initially but the pressure ended up being the difference was Kell. When Gennady needs to rapidly close distance after his opponent circles out, he will cross walk out of stance at the same rate or faster as they retreat. It gives the illusion they are running. Canelo was really the only one who was doing the maths a little quicker. So he could move to spots where Gennady pressure wouldnt drown him and he could have room to fight to his fight. Otherwise before you know it, GGG has you in a corner or just slight off it where he likes to put guys making them feel the corner is a trap as they move onto his right hand . It’s a nightmare of constantly trying to break his stalk. He’s literally Michael Myers in a tiny ring i can’t imagine what that pressure feels like stress wise. His only real weakness is his high menacing guard chin down eyes up habit leaves his body WIDE open. But usually no one can do anything about it to exploit it bc they are under so much pressure. Canelo hit Gennady with one of the most insane flush body shots I’ve ever seen you can see him physically try to hide it but can’t. This was after the Murata fight when he demolished his body which is the first time we’d actually see someone attack GGG’s weakness. And it only came in final couple fights when he visibly slowed
@@skillrboxing HI SIR I LOVE YOUR VIDS was rewatching your beterbiev anaylsis on repeat and was graced by this 😭 your content has helped me so much on my boxing journey, thank you so much 😎👍 skillr fan for life
I like how you didn't select shitty opponents to showcase his defence. People give well deserved credit to many boxers for their defence game and Golovkin definately is one of them.
The production on these videos is amazing. Love that in this one, for every punch of his you highlighted, I think you also showed GGG dropping somebody with it.
12:06 In most 2D fighting games, "Overheads" are attacks that explicitly exploit openings from blocking low. A well-known example is Ryu from Street Fighter's forward + medium punch (Collarbone Breaker), which has a similar motion and purpose as Gennadiy's overhead punch: just when you think you're safe, this jerk just reaches up and blasts the top of your dome, cracking open your guard before mixing you up with a stiff combo. In a more realistic comparison, GGG's overhead punch also reminds me of Andy Hug's (RIP) notorious Axe Kick, which worked on a similar principle: most sport combat styles simply don't prepare for attacks coming from directly overhead, and defending against such an attack often leaves you wide open for other attacks. Even if he never knocks anyone out with it, the mere threat of the Axe Kick made Hug's opponents flustered, and a well-timed feint could leave them open for body shots or his equally infamous Hug Tornado (a spinning kick to the legs). GGG clearly used his overhead punch to fluster his opponents to similar effect (or in the case of folks like Marco Antonio Rubio, lay them out entirely).
I think the best Skllr video is always the last one. Amazing job! Your analysis and resource videos makes this one a tribute to GGG's legacy besides keeping a critical view that teach us about this amazing sport! Keep the good work! Thanks!! Been thinking about it because of copyright issues. We could post all the breakdowns that we cant on YT. But its an option we are still exploring
He also threw an unusual liver shot. Usually, the liver shot was more vertical when thrown, but GGG threw it horizontally to make his 2 big knuckles hit first before his entire fist.

Thanks for the videos man they seriously help alot and i can imagine the effort put into making them so seriously thankyou for all of them i watch them and try to apply what i learn into my sparring sessions
You said it's more tiring fighting backwards which is 100% true. But the pressure GGG would apply would tax opponents mentally as well. Helping to drain that gas tank
Great video I been looking for a video that breaks down his techniques because I absolutely love him and his style and wanna learn the exact same one thanks🔥🔥🔥🔥
But he was perfect for the division the way it is. He developed more and more from boxing to fighting like his heart. Greatest middleweight boxer. Anyone can learn from his mindset.
Aside from the fact that many other all-time greats never moved up either, he was the most avoided fighter I’ve ever seen. Although his long time sparring partner David Benevidez is catching up to him in that regard. Furthermore, GGG fought at his walk around weight. There is a video of him weighing in at 163 a month before his fight! Which other middle weight did that???
GGGs trainer talked about training his balance as well. His stance and positioning in addition to a strong neck, chin tucked, and vision allowed for one of the greatest chins of all time. Look at Brandon’s legs at 6:10 vs when GGG takes a shot.
@ 2:07 i notice gelovkin has synchronised steps with canelo until he wants to engage in the corner, he steps before canelo and makes him activate stance.
he also brought back shifting to cut off the ring. Flaw: he could have moved his head a bit more. Be that as it may it was odd how he chose a new trainer to make him a boxer-puncher. I think he should have kept on being the seek and destroy guy.

In the first Canelo fight GGG whiffed a lot of rights when Canelo was retreating along the ropes. Would’ve been nice to see some body shots since Canelo wasn’t in position to counters. Canelo was literally turning so much he exposed his back. There was a right to Canelo’s body in round 4 (maybe) that seemed to freeze him.
