  • What really makes a wine good or even great? Although terms “good wine” and "great wine" might mean different things to each of us, there are several factors that contribute towards wine's quality.

    That was a nice and restrained way of putting it. Good info.

    Great video! I like that you point to the difference between concentration and intensity. I think it is worth to go a bit deeper into the distinction though, because it's not difficult at all imo. Wines that have great intensity, but are not very concentrated, can be truly amazing when they are balanced and have complexity. That results in another distinct quality of great wine: finesse. These are wines that are delicate and speak softly rather than yelling loudly. Cheers!

    Loved the part of that the judge of a wine is good or not is Yourself! So true but then of course one can learn from those who know!

    The matter of fact is that we can discuss the quality aspects of a wine but it's very important to feel how great our level of emotions is from tasting and if we would buy that wine again!

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think that is the most important question! Wine should be more than just a buzz, it should, as You noted, give us emotions! 🥰

    I whole heartedly agree on your assessment of the quality of the aftertaste/length of a wine. It does boil down to the flavors and aromas that linger vs the structural components. I never really took the time to analyze this in such an intricate way, but your video put this into perspective. I have had a few wines where structural elements like tannins and acids lingered on the palate, and this was definitely not a positive. Thanks again for an enlightening video!

    In my opinion complex wine mostly comes from single vineyard bottling that comes from a single site within the vineyard that expresses that exact soil’s character along with the character of the season they had that year. Most times when I get wine where the winery blended from multiple vineyards, all I can think about is how bland they made their wine become. I rarely see a winery that does an excellent job with blending from multiple sites, so I just stick to the single vineyard producers who make their wine on site. I just opened an 11 year old bottle of Vranac from a single vineyard bottling and it’s the perfect definition of a wine that was worth the aging before opening. The complexity of the terroir is really shining through 🤤👍🏼

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I actually disagree. And I think that many of the winemakers wants us to believe that very, very much, because they can sell their single vineyard wines for way higher price. And yes, there are some single vineyard/site wines that offer absolutely amazing quality, uniqueness and are differently shaped, however, not all sites/vineyards have that potential. But now, every one is making single vineyard, no matter the quality of that terroir. And often times blends can show way more complexity and depth of flavours. Just look at Champagne - some of the worlds best Champagnes are blends!

    Was the Vietti Barbera D’Asti shown in the background as a passive suggestion? I want to try aging Barbera but have not found one that I thought would age well.

      Hahaha, not really. But I do love that Barbera a lot, and to be completely honest, I am not really the biggest Barbera fan. My wine friends and colleagues are often laughing at me. 🥹🙊😂

    the problem today is that red wines have alcohol in the 14% sometimes 15% range. I remember having a Beychevelle 82, 11.5% that was the wine, but you don’t find this low alcohol any longer

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t mind the alcohol, as long as the wine is done properly and is in balance. It used to be a problem to bring grapes to full maturity, hence the low alcohol wines. And alcohol is one of the preservatives, with lower levels, wine will not age as well and long. Therefore one reads about a great vintage lately being so often, because the grapes are able to reach full maturity in Bordeaux. That high alcohol in wines are because of two reasons: 1. We understand better viticulture. 2. Global climate changes - where we all could pitch in to change things.

      The oculars? 😂😂

  • @eymerichinquisitore9022
    @eymerichinquisitore9022 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The wines you define as good seem to be the classic wines of the enologist, never faithful to the grape or to the territory. Perfect, built all the same to give maximum satisfaction to sight, smell and palate. These homologated wines are starting to tire and the market proves it. Those you define as "great" have only three ingredients: selected yeasts, impeccable marketing strategies and a reputation that is not always deserved. I believe that to judge a wine as "great" it is first necessary to taste it with the label covered together with other wines considered "small", often there are incredible and useful surprises to understand what is really good.

    Ignorance is bliss… I wish I didn’t know all this now thanks for the information though.🫣
    I think Chocolate is best at room temperature I like my Pino at room temperature also.
    Tea from a China cup
    Chips from the paper….
    Red wine 🍷 room temperature too for me.
    Coke room temperature for me again too.
    I think the bubbles are velvety cold bubbles are sharp to be.
    Should I be drinking Pino chilled?

    • @NoSediment
      @NoSediment  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on Your preference. Those that have lower tannin level I would like to have slightly chilled. Especially on hot summer days. 🍷
