    Started my ground control upgrade today, 150# springs, upgraded to Brienstein HD shocks, came to a stop when I noticed my current setup did not have bump stops, which may be a common setup. Ordered bump stops from PP, coming tomorrow, everything else looks good. My previous setup had me setting 3" too low in the back, with the car bottoming out on bumps, so hope to have a better ride with new setup.

      Sounds good! I don't think the bump stops are necessary, but they can't hurt.

    Thanks for this video, Ian--I bought the exact setup as you (because of you, in fact) from Ground Control and installed them on my '74 2.0. I had to drill out the hats, but no big deal, and GC was very helpful. Car rides and sticks better than ever.

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very cool! Glad the video helped. What did you drill out?

    • @besteven
      @besteven 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Starting at 9:00 here, the center bore for the "hats" or metal caps that sit on the spring was too small, and would not travel past the threads. GC said they must've sent the wrong bore with the Bilsteins I ordered and offered to replace them; but of course, unwilling to wait, I drilled them out myself...

      Thanks! Glad you found the video helpful. if you get the same setup, be sure to ask ground control for the hats that will accommodate bilsteins. Apparently they’ve made a few changes since I made this video

      @@IanKarr I've got Koni's up front ... so I think I will keep all four corners the same ... I believe the Koni's area little different than the Bilsteins in how the sleeve perches on the shock.

    changed stock shocks for bilstein 00173 and new 100 lb shocks, hardest ride I have ever experienced. bottoms out on every bump. cannot figure it out. except for the lack of bump stocks 1973 914 2.0

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ride will probably be stiffer than what you’ve been used to...especially if the old stuff was shot. I’d adjust the perch lower and use the bump stops.

      I just encountered this issue while installing new KYBs and springs into my ‘74. At 1:40, you can see that your old KYBs we’re actually mounted backwards. The drain hole in the spring perch should be turned 180 degrees (toward the front) to allow water to drain. This is according to the manual. Not sure if its that critical. Great video, Ian. It helped me on my install. Thanks!

    So got bump stops in today, assembled GC system as shown in your well done video, but when I was finishing up the 1st strut I notice that I only had 1/2 a nut worth of thread to tightened down to??? This doesn't sound safe so called GC office, no one answered, left message. Have you heard of anyone else running out of thread when tightening up strut?

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. It can happen. Few things to look for...1) the final tightening/torqueing should be done with the wheels on the ground. That often pushes more threads up. 2) Your bump stop may be stealing some of the length you need.

    Hi Ian,
    Almost ready to rebuild my 914 suspension. Coil overs in the rear and Bilstein's with Tarett Engineering sway bars in the front. It seems the Bilsteins have more adjustment rings(6) compared to the Koni's(3). Did you order your 150 lbs Eibach springs through Ground Control or separately? Are you using the Bilstein B6 "sport version"? Thanks for all your detailed videos.

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard. I got my springs from 914 Rubber. And yes, the Bilstein sports are what I'm running. At least I think so ;). It's been a while....

  • @reese8746
    @reese8746 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello, Great video!
    I have a couple of questions:
    1. What is the spring length before installation?
    2. What keeps the spring from rattling around when you go over a large bump? Seems like the red column needs to be raised and a few millimeters of 'preload' needs to be put on the spring so that the locking ring is always in contact with the bottom of the spring.

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you like the video! The spring is held against the perch by gravity...as designed. There are models with “helper springs” which apply some preload if you prefer having that on your car.

  • @rockinOD
    @rockinOD ปีที่แล้ว

    Ian, I noticed your set up your bumble bee rear suspension different. Do you have an opinion on your coil-overs on your green 914 vs. your spring set-up on your Bumble bee? I think you also run a rear sway bar on the BB. I'm interested in hearing about the ride quality (comfort) vs. handling assessment

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard. Good eye. Yes, because it'a a bumblebee I wanted to keep things stock looking. The green car with the coilovers seems to hug the road a bit better.

      Thank you for all your videos. Are you happy, with the balance between the comfort & performance, with the 150lb springs, or would you go a little more? Did you ever auto cross the car? I didn’t see a rear sway bar, any thoughts on the need for one?
      When lining up the centre of the rear wheel with the line in the body, are your wheels 15”? I have 16” wheels and do I ignore this?

      @IanKarr  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. Yes, I’ve been happy with the setup. Definitely more of a performance feel. Under 25mph the ride is a bit stiffer than stock, but over 25mph the car feels glued to the road. Good luck and thanks for watching!

      @@IanKarr I reached out to Ground Control (GC) who indicated they can powder coat the springs "black" for an extra charge. GC confirmed their coil over kit springs have an inner diameter (ID) of 63.5mm (2.5"). I also reached out to 914 Rubber who confirmed their 140/160 lb Progressive spring set (OEM91433353105) has an ID of 83.3mm (3.28") so not compatible with GC's coil over kit. When contacting both vendors I referenced your video. BTW - I've ordered the same configuration (Bilstein shocks, 150 lb spring rate), thanks so much for your helpful videos.

    How was the ride with the Eibach 150 spring? I am about to switch to coil overs on my 74' 914 however I do not want a spring that is going to make the ride stiff and bumpy. Great DIY!! Just what I needed for my 74! Did you also replace the front shocks (or is that the next video)? Does this DIY require an alignment? Do you have pics of your car (wanted to see before and after ride heights)? Thanks!!

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! glad you enjoyed my knuckle-busting. I've always heard that it's a good idea to get an alignment when you change anything suspension related, but I didn't notice any difference in alignment / driveability after this upgrade. The ride height is really up to you. And the adjustable system allows you to dial it in with a lot of precision. I don't have before and after pics. I set it to the generally accepted stock ride height described in the video. I did replace the fronts as well, but didn't have time to shoot a video. Sorry, but it was in the spring and I wanted to get the car back on the road!

    • @stltri

      Just did the rears. Was easy after watching your video. Only difference is that I used Koni's instead of Bilstein. Perches were different on the Koni. Had to go a lot lower on the collar with the bottom perch. Seems to be working great. As you noticed, the ride was a lot improved, even with just changing the rears. Next project will be the fronts. Thanks again Ian! Keep the videos coming!
