  • Time to meet the LS3 914! This time, I'll give you a general walk-through of the car as it currently sits. But even better, you'll get to see Randy Pobst, world famous race driver and overall great guy, take my car for a lap at a local auto cross!
And here's a link to the car's full build on 914 World:

Thanks, Budget Outlaws! I’m a budget guy, too - old Volvo endurance racer, the Flyin’ Moose 740 Turbo.
Chris’ car drive very nicely, with good balance and that elusive quality, traction under power. Very impressive for a brand new garage build by an amateur just doing his own thing 👍👍 Stopped and shifted well, and had that incredible precise Porsche steering, at its best in the mid-eng. 914 chassis. A terrific start!

As a kid I loved 914/916's and Karmann Ghia's. I remember in my neighborhood around 1973 a guy had an Orange 914 with even wider flares with Centerline wheels and a big whale tail. We knew it probably wasn't the fastest car but, it probably handled like a slot car. P.S. I will always call it Sears Point like you initially did.

I’ve always wondered if I’d do it again someday and… who knows? I can tell there has been a lot of innovation over the years since the advent of the internet and all of that. Your sense of style shows thru in every aspect of this beautiful build. Attention to detail is everywhere yet maintaining a simplicity right out of a design shop. The passion for beauty while having race functionality is evident. Actually I kind of dig the unpainted industrial look even though the painted version will probably be a stunner I'm sure.
Hope the corrosion above suspension pickup points is addressed as it looks to have perforation, I'm sure it will.

I love your build , I don't know how you view it but to me it's Ring Bros quality . And if you don't know them , of course you know of them what am I thinking . Anyways me and my dear old departed dad test drove one for my first sports car but opted for an MGB back in the seventies. Always regretted that day until the day he died , we missed out on a mura that went for 27k well within our budget but a sorely missed opportunity. Dad wanted that Mura worse than me come to find out, I was probably 16 test driving porches and borrowing the DeLorean for Prom Night or something like that , anyways you had to look cool . I love the car , if I was richer I would easily give 150 k even though you got a 100 k in it and it shows . Just trying to show my appreciation of the build no offense intended .

That was totally unplanned. I was there to say hi to Randy (he was driving at a track day) and there just happened to be the autocross. Pretty cool that it worked out the way it did...

The 914 build is incredible. But I’ll bet the most difficult part was getting the (very clever) hood hinges to line up. Come clean, how many attempts? Subscribed for that alone. 👍

Not at all. There's a fair bit of didtance between it and any heat sources in the engine bay. And it's not yet insulated on the back side.

    Can't wait for more...
IMHO, you've take a not so wonderful looking body design and, as form follows function, it's really becoming
a thing of beauty... Is there a rollcage hidden in that roofline (?)...and I'm looking forward to hearing
more of this jewel, both from inside and out (!) (BTW, how much does she weigh, at 400 plus HP?)

    • @attheredbarn1669

No hidden roll bar up top. Those targa bars are incredibly strong. I don't plan to track the car and didn't want anything that'd potentially create headroom issues. Car weighs about 2400 lbs.

Can the axle slip out of the transaxle ? That happened to me twice, once 80 miles from home with my 19 year old girlfriend. Not a fun phone call to her parents telling them we had to spend the night. The other time a guy trying it out, the rear wheel fell into a pothole as he was turning at stop sign. Why not use a strap to keep the wheel from falling too far ? Didn’t make sense to me, like a design fault.

I would do it for free , gently because I bet your so sympathetic to your true love you can't and wouldn't do that to something with that much love in it . And it shows , it's off the flicking charts .

Great to see the car driveable. I'm wondering what it weighs in at with the tubing and v8,
did moving the v8 forward change the weight distribution much? I'm am trying to decide what to do with my bare chassis 914.

    • @attheredbarn1669
      @attheredbarn1669  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'll get the weight when it get's corner balanced. It's probably about 2400 lbs, all in. Moving things forward didn't change the distribtion in any way I could ever tell. I'll never drive the car hard enough (or well enough!) to tell.

general concensus is they're good to about 500 hp. Don't drag-launch them, but... I have a buddy with an LS7 in his 914 and he dyno'd at 523 hp at the wheels. He tracks the car, has on-track video of it going 169 mph and he's had no issues with his Boxster S transaxle.
