  • This is the story of the secret 16-player Mario Kart Mode Double Dash LAN. This involves some hard to find equipment, lots of controllers, and at least 15 other friends. Eight teams of two people taking turns driving or throwing items.
    Shoutout to TheresGabe for the inspo & being literally the only other person I could find that actually had 16 people show up all at once.

    As a controller and console modder, you have just inspired me to design an all-in-one 16 player double dash travel kit.
    Ambitious? Yes.
    Expensive? Yes.
    A waste of my efforts? Also, probably, Yes.
    But we do what we must. Because we can.

    Fun video! I think I heard that double dash is super Unbalanced so random characters does make it more fun in that way too.

    This is so cool! I definitely want to do this at least once, it would be awesome to play Double Dash with 16 friends.
    Only downside would be the price and not being able to pick your character, which is a bummer, but the randomness makes sense in the spirit of Double Dash

    It makes me very sad that this feature isn't taken advantage of by emulators to have a pseudo-online experience for the game. I know with software like Xlink it is possible to play this game online on original hardware, but this feature just screams of potential via modding, sorta like Slippi or CTGP. Thank you for making this video!

      actually, modding has been attempted for YEARS on gamecube LAN games. it’s just that, unfortunately, it’s currently too difficult for anyone to find a workaround to solve the issue. as of the time of me writing this, there’s a $2100 bounty up for anyone who can fix the problem.

    • @marioisawesome8218
      @marioisawesome8218 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the problem being, there's no variable input delay which makes long distance sessions a stuttery and slow mess. double dash LAN has been possible online for a good while, believe it or not.

  • @jeremycole9809
    @jeremycole9809 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You can also get 16 players by using only 4 Gamecubes and having two teams on each. It's more cramped, but a whole lot less expensive! I'm getting close to having this setup myself, with a third Gamecube setup, adapter and controllers and all, should arrive next month! I'll have to wait to pick up a fourth set, but I am going to call it there; all adding more does is add more real estate, and no other BBA game uses 8 consoles!

    • @KadencePlays
      @KadencePlays  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      as far as I know LAN mode stops letting you do split screen like that after connecting a third console :( hoping i'm wrong

    • @jeremycole9809
      @jeremycole9809 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@KadencePlays It stops you from doing 4-way split screen, but not 2-way. I've done it myself using Wiis loaded with Nintendont and emulating the BBA. Don't rely on that as a complete solution though; in my experience, three or more consoles without any Gamecubes connected gets unstable. Adding Gamecubes makes the connection more reliable for some reason.

    • @petarpetrovic257
      @petarpetrovic257 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeremycole9809 hey im also interested in this, i have bunch of wiis and gamecubes. How do you connect wii and gamecube together? On same wifi router (gamecube via cable obviously)?
      Is there a cheaper alternative to the gamecube lan adapter?

    • @jeremycole9809
      @jeremycole9809 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@petarpetrovic257 For Wii, you can link up via Wifi, but you really should get some USB-LAN adapters and cables; that makes the game much more stable and less stuttery. The Wii needs to load the game via Nintendont--an application that loads Gamecube games from SD or USB--and have the BBA option set. Make sure you have one of your internet connection options set to Wired mode and have the BBA Emulation set to that network profile, or it won't work.
      Make sure you use a router rather than a network switch; the Wii won't cooperate with a switch alone. For the Gamecube side of things, there is no cheaper alternative to the BBA--the Wii has you covered for being cheap. If using only Gamecubes, a network switch or router will do fine, but if you are having both Gamecubes and Wiis connected this way, connect the Gamecubes to the router first, the nconnect the Wiis; the creator of Nintendont makes it clear that it won't work right unless you do this.

    This is really easy and much, much, MUCH cheaper to do with Wiis. Softmod each Wii, install a fan-made piece of software called Nintendont, sideload or rip Mario Kart to each one, plug in any USB ethernet adapter, and go! You can even use a combination of Gamecubes and Wiis if you already have a mix of both.
    At $40-$50 per Wii, $10 per generic controller (x2), and $10 per LAN adapter you're looking at less than $80 per system. Assuming you already have the networking equipment and TVs, you should come in around $600 for the complete setup. I can't even imagine what you paid to assemble this using real Gamecubes. The GCN LAN adapter alone usually costs over $120 each.

    • @alexharker7223
      @alexharker7223 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KadencePlays I will admit I’ve never tried eight Wiis. I have networked two Wiis and a Wii with a GameCube, which worked perfectly. Nintendont documentation includes many caveats, workarounds, and special cases for LAN-enabled games and makes no such warning about Mario Kart though.
      In any case, great video. It looked like a good time!

    Hiya! Been wanting to leave a comment for a while, but I've been waiting until a certain time.
    Just wanna say thanks for this video. I saw this back in... September 2022, and... let's just say... it had a definitive influence on me. ^^
    Back in 2005, I took part in an 8 TV Lan tourney and that was a magical experience for me, though I honestly thought that that time would've been the only time I experience that. Though after seeing this video... I was basically like "You know what... I wanna make this happen again!"
    So I did! :)
    (With some help)
    After much time (And $), I procured not only what I needed for 8 TV Lan, but... also a means to record All 8 Screens! 😁
    Hopefully it's ok if I post this link. Here's what I believe is the very first Fully Recorded and documented 8 TV Lan race! ^^

      I've yet to truly complete the setup though, as I still don't have 16 controllers yet, but it's definitely on my todo list, amongst other things (Like HD recording for all 8 screens. ^^)
      And yeah, I did come across that stream about a month ago, pretty dang entertaining. The commentary kinda reminds me of those MK8 tourneys that Nintendo did not too long ago. ^^

Even with a single Wii in the Mix, you'll be lucky to get through one race without a disconnection, even with a LAN adapter. The Wii's themselves just don't transfer data fast enough.
      The most reliable is connecting to gamecubes themselves, with BBA's
      That being said, if you have a PC that can run Dolphin Emu well... and can link it to your gamecube... that works pretty well too. You'll occasionally have a stutter or two every now and then... but it seems pretty stable.

      i talked about this in the video, i found the bba emulation to get flakey after connecting more and more connections. seems fine connecting a couple of wiis but seemingly had issues after 4 or so. lmk if you experience anything different@@Auddy07
