I love how the surveyor seemingly has a very loose grasp on ES lore. Like Austin is RPing as a real world surveyor teleported into Skyrim who just decided to do his surveys.
@@drakem4816I don't think that's what they're talking about, Isekai usually has the character realize they're in a different world, and is probably stuck there. I agree. But still, even if it's been only 25 years instead of 100, you'd expect more emergent infrastructure.
"...in the not-so-distant past, more than half the city fell off of a cliff into the sea, which likely had a negative effect on the local economy". Yeah that seems like an astute assumption one might make🤣🤣
It gets even more dire when you consider "the not-so-distant past" was actually 80 years ago. It's been a full three generations and they're still obsessing over it, haven't bothered trying to rebuild the city, heck haven't even cleared the rubble of the damaged buildings. They've been doing nothing but complaining about it for 80 years straight.
@@twinzzlers Remember? Pretty much nobody currently living there was even ALIVE when it happened. But I'm more concerned by the fact that they're still worrying about how to rebuild nearly a full century later, yet apparently haven't taken any action toward doing so. This is like if, say, Hiroshima was still to this day mostly empty of people, and hadn't bothered even cleaning the rubble from the wrecked buildings, much less building new houses, while people who were born decades after the war complained about how the war wrecked their city.

@any_austin as others have exasperated, fallout towns would be interesting, but me personally, would die happy if I could see rogueport's unemployment rate from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
The disaster in the “not too distant past,” happened almost 80 years prior to the direct survey done this past week. Most of the present residents of Winterhold were born after the disaster. With nearly a century to clear debris and rebuild, I’m not all that sympathetic when I see abandoned, damaged structures being left to decay instead of being demolished for reconstruction.
this episode in particular made me realize just how many characters i've never questioned the logistics on how they get by. like where DOES nelacar get the money to pay for the room in his inn? why DOES kraldar have a manservant named thonjolf that gives him massages and keeps him company in the cold, cold winter nights?
Nelacar's research must be earning him some money. Kraldar's servant, I mean they could be gay (and nothing wrong with that), but probably it's mostly just that he's old and needs help around the house and has the money to afford a servant.
As Thonjolf says, Kraldar's family used to be powerful. So he probably inherited some amount of wealth. While they may not be among the wealthy elites anymore, it doesn't seem out of the question for him to have enough left over to not have to worry about working and be able to house a single, uh, "servant."
Skyrim has a bunch of "old jobless rich guy and his lifelong platonic friend and housemate" households, which out of game is because these guys are potential jarl and housecarl replacements, but i feel does actually fit with the culture of the province for this to be a not hugely common, but entirely unremarkable living situation among mostly old warriors and noblemen
Nelacar is a merchant selling magical enchanted goods. He is also a former teacher at the college and would probably have saved up to go freelance. So he both has a current income from selling wares (he even has a store set up in the backroom) and he probably has a nest egg from prior employment.
The whole time i was thinking "theyre relying too heavily on one income source" and then you pointed it out at the end and it made me feel smart 😂 like im learning something from these vids. I like that your final report is well thought out and informative and comes to a conclusion instead of just summerizing what we already saw. It makes it the best part of the vid to me and makes me look forward to it. Keep up the great work 😊
Wonderful survey once agsin. In the Middens under the College of Wunterhold is the Augur of Dunlain. This is a former teacher at the College that due to a freak accident turned himself into a ball of energy. He's probably not unemployed because he has a disability that prevents him from working. Also in his state he appears not to requite food or water to survive and seems to not take up any resoureses for his existence.
I've always thought there's a ripe market to establish a blacksmith's forge in Winterhold. There's plenty of ore in the hold in general, and there's a mine just down the road which is essentially part of the town. Seems like it would be a boon to the local economy to set up a blacksmith there. Also, since magic and alchemy rub shoulders a lot (and mages need lots of restore magicka potions), an alchemist's shop ought to find a ready-made clientele with the college right there. Get those things going and then you have more taxes going to the local government (which can then do things like, for example, hire more guards, who can patrol the town and its outskirts and make it safe enough that farms can be set up in the environs of the town), and perhaps you attract the khajiit merchants to make the town part of their trade routes since there will be more to buy and sell there. There's room for Winterhold to rebuild itself, there just doesn't seem to be the will to make it happen.
Maybe they do it specifically so Khajiit don’t show up, Nords can get pretty racist, especially to the north-east, and frankly given Winterhold’s Jarl I wouldn’t put it past him to sabotage his own economy because he thinks it the cats show up they somehow collapse what’s left of Winterhold.
@any_austin have you considered looking at participation rates and the percentage of the population in the workforce? Might be interesting to know considering that towns like Dawnstar might have a 100% employment rate but might not have a lot of people in training/education to replace those workers in the future. Might be applicable considering the high number of students living in Winterhold

I also love how it add another layer of thought to the game. I just ran around all willy nilly when I played. This is thorough. Here's to hopefully many more vids in the new year! ❤🎉
Probably already suggested: It would be interesting to see this done with Red Dead Redemption 2. The logistics of surveying the larger cities might make it too much of a chore however.
Yeah, I'd also like to see that, but there are so many NPCs and they mostly don't have names displayed or any way to talk to them, so I think it would be a massive chore. I really want him to do the woodworking survey in RDR2 though.
I could see this maybe for like Valentine or Rhodes but somewhere like Saint Denis would be next to impossible lol. I would love a restaurant review video tho, every saloon in the game is completely unique with a different vibe
I dunno why, but I always get such a visceral sense of anticipation before the big reveal that the best way to enumerate the populace is, of course, via direct survey.
Found this channel like 5 minutes ago and I already want to watch this man just dryly surveying Skyrim's cities, towns and their residents to make reports on their employment rates.
Suddenly seeing Argonian hands come up right after the kid said that "people like you are the reason no one lives here anymore" gave me a real chuckle.
Great report from my favorite government employee, have you considered moving down to Cyrodiil? Warmer weather, even more whacky residents. Imperial City would be a daunting survey though.
I asked myself yesterday: "Self, tomorrow is the New Year, and we gotta start the year off right...so, what's the first thing we should do on the morning of 2024?" and I said: "Economic surveys" "...and job applications..."
I would LOVE to see this series carry over into Oblivion once you wrap up your findings with Skyrim. Maybe don't jump straight into the Imperial City (unless you're REALLY ambitious), but instead start off with a smaller town like Leyawiin or Cheydinhal (or even Bruma, which would actually make the most geographical sense coming from Skyrim) to get a sense of the regional populace and attitudes. The way NPCs behave and interact in that game makes them feel like prime targets for a direct survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
I finally decided to check out your music cause you keep plugging it and holy shit?? Why is it so freaking good??? Like for no reason?? 😂 Everyone should go check it out. It's so underrated. You deserve so much attention for it ❤
this is the most surreal kind of video to run across and I'm all for it. There's creative ideas, and then there's bringing the day to day grind of the real world to video creation and making money off of it. Not bad. You're Employed.
My mom works as an auditor in the Danish Tax Bureau, so I KNOW that "your taxes will be audited sooner rather than later" is a very real threat 😂 it was said often in my childhood home!
I think Nelacar kind of counts as self-employed. The two retired guys, I think only one of them is actually retired and the other is his servant, so employed. Also you missed Phinis Gestor, one of the teachers in the college. Also Enthir, who's... I mean he seems to be part of the faculty, who just happens to do some shady stuff on the side.
"The winter has been harsh... My children suffer and my bones are frozen stiff and I am unable to help them. The pain of frostbite is sometimes so unbearable that I scream out into the darkness of the night for some kind of God to put me out of my misery. My employer has- "Oh! So you're employed? That's amazing thank you" "W-Wait! Please help me!" *walks away*

Its impressive how the title of the video already spoils the conclusion of the video but im still excited to see it
I dunno why, but I always get such a visceral sense of anticipation before the big reveal that the best way to enumerate the populace is, of course, via direct survey.
Found this channel like 5 minutes ago and I already want to watch this man just dryly surveying Skyrim's cities, towns and their residents to make reports on their employment rates.
I work at a university (I do not teach magic) and i will forever refer to myself as “senior wizard” when asked about my position
I’m an enchanter. That’s why i need the beer in my desk drawer. It’s for my enchanting
love that hes an argonian character during these videos. Hes literally a lizard person working for the government...
Suddenly seeing Argonian hands come up right after the kid said that "people like you are the reason no one lives here anymore" gave me a real chuckle.
Bro’s gotta be named something that translates to something like “Counts-Who-Works” and just kinda went with it lol
Great report from my favorite government employee, have you considered moving down to Cyrodiil? Warmer weather, even more whacky residents. Imperial City would be a daunting survey though.
Missed enthir, he's the reagent salesman in the college. Also black market dealer. Definitely employed.
Ya know, you should try this for morrowind. You have a button to ask them if they have a job and what it is in it
I’m interested in that
Winterhold also only has a 5% rate of city that didn't fall into the ocean.
Too soon..
i will never get tired of "3, 2, 1, press co-"
Thank you for doing these. This is precisely the distraction that I need now.
I hope the things you need distracting from become resolved soon, friend!
I asked myself yesterday: "Self, tomorrow is the New Year, and we gotta start the year off right...so, what's the first thing we should do on the morning of 2024?"
and I said: "Economic surveys"
"...and job applications..."
This series is so great, it scratches an itch every time
I would LOVE to see this series carry over into Oblivion once you wrap up your findings with Skyrim.
I feel like Enthir’s the equivalent of a phd student employed by the college.
Your videos have been my comfort for 10 years.
"The winter has been harsh... My children suffer and my bones are frozen stiff and I am unable to help them. The pain of frostbite is sometimes so unbearable that I scream out into the darkness of the night for some kind of God to put me out of my misery. My employer has-
"Oh! So you're employed? That's amazing thank you"
"W-Wait! Please help me!"
*walks away*
He is just kralldar's really good friend that comes with him on family vacations and lives with him.
You missed a couple of professors, a few guards and the nearby mine.
I really like the vibe of your channel, this philosophy of enjoying the small mundane things in life (or video games I suppose). I really need more of this positivity in my life
There's a mine down the road that employs 3 or 4 guys. It's in Winterhold hold, so they're part of the population of it.
Imagine the challenge surveys.
Animal Crossing towns, Shadows of Doubt cities, so on and so forth.
Hearing Austin say "it's giving sus" knocked me tf out.
the questline trying to happen in the background of the survey is really funny
God, why do I love these video so fckn much ? Thank you so much for making these.
There are also two ice spirits bound by the college wizards to guard the local prison, since the guard it’s understaffed. They probably count as employed.
Really good series. Thanks for doing these!
Thanks for being one of my favorite channels. Happy New Year
I have such a soft spot for winterhold. Mainly because I love the snowy atmosphere
Really love your videos man. I found you on the $2 game video after having already played Fatum Betula. It was so great finding another person who felt the same way about such a weird little hidden gem. I'd love to see more videos of strange yet moving games sometime. There's a wealth of great stuff on steam. Keep killing it.
A fabulous video!! Stumbled across it by accident, delighted by the thorough approach of your bureau's employees to the situation in Winterhold. Yes, a sad thing what has befallen them - good that you are taking it into account!
(Seriously, a fantastic vid. Gotta watch the rest of the series!!)😊😊
imagine a census-taker barging into the mayor's home and threatening to raise his taxes
I am loving these. You’ve made me think it’s possible for me to do this sort of gaming mockumentary. Thank you!
I adore the way you engage with videogames. This channel is a gem.
It’s weird how much these videos emotionally comfort me.
Excellent video, glad to catch more funky tunes. Good stuff.
im loving this series. you're effortlessly funny
Perfect for today, it looks like Winterhold outside
I’m constantly watching these, they hold up on rewatch, the unhinged vibes is always so good
I wonder if he’s gonna go to the small towns throughout the game
Like riverwood, rorikstead, dragon bridge, kynesgrove
Places like that
Winterhold seems like it has 5% of people compared to the other towns
If you were to do this to the entire province of Skyrim, would you count bandits as employed or would they bring the rate down?
Banditry is not taxed, it does not contribute to the local economy and isn't employment in the traditional sense
@@bujusticRidiculous, I’m a bandit and file my taxes like a good citizen.
Yo, you were my top artist on spotify wrapped this year! Thanks again for some good listening.
When I read the title I didn't expect it to be as interesting, especially the breakdown of the situation at the end.
Super excited for this analysis video! Thanks so much for uploading! Might comment more later!
& Happy New Year! Here's looking forward to more great content like this from you, Austin!
You should make a mod for Skyrim once you’re done that makes the Jarls tell the player the unemployment rate when asked.
You couldn’t force me to live swamp land town, frozen hellscape with a ghetto, frozen hellscape next to a worst college then the bard’s, or frozen hellscape with two mines.
I get so excited for the press conferences. lol. I multi task as I watch TH-cam (cook dinner, clean, etc) but the moment I hear that countdown I run back to my tablet to watch.
“More than half of the city physically fell off of a cliff and into the sea which likely had a negative effect on the local economy.” Ah yes, most likely. It’s highly probable that that is the case. 🧐
Can't wait to hear "It's not like that" in its entirety at some point!! 😮
I enjoyed this video a lot, please keep making videos like this
This is my favorite series on yt. I'm so inspired to make an Oblivion version
he forgot about the very employed frost atronachs who guard the local prison
Been waiting for another Skyrim survey. These are so good, it makes me wish Skyrim was a game with endless cities.
It would've been cool if there had been some sort of side quest to restore Winterhold. Something like the Tarrey Town quests in Breath Of The Wild. I hope someone's made a mod like that.
Man, I really value what you do with your videos. Your attention to the seemingly unimportant and shoddy ways we try to replicate the feelings of real life genuinely brings me to a point of personal wonder and reflection about the world I live in. And all that with the most half-hearted shitpost energy. It's a beautiful thing
