So much respect ✊ for this woman. She went through a lot, had her career trashed and was blacklisted after tearing up a photo of the pope on SNL live to protest against the Catholic Church’s coverup of child sexual abuse by priests. She paid quite a price and few folks have that kind of conviction.

Sinead O'Connor is one of the most underrated female artists. She defied the stereotypical and male dominated record industry by shaving her head and singing about issues that were affecting her, her country and the world. She bore the brunt of mainstream society when she tore a picture of the Pope at that time, and publicly chastised the Catholic Church. She was ostracized, denigrated and disgraced... however you feel about her then, and now, she stood for what she believed. And she is an amazing artist. I've listened to her for more than 20 years. Women singing about their past boyfriends or expressing their anger and pain from past relationships, she created that genre before Alanis Morissette, Tori Amos, even Taylor Swift.

Came by to honor Sinéad O’Connor who sadly passed away a few days ago. She had a hauntingly beautiful voice. She famously tore a pic of the pope in half on live TV (SNL) to bring attention to sexual abuse being committed & hidden by the Catholic Church. She was vilified for it. We now know she was correct and brave enough to be one of the first to publicly call them out on it. I pray she’s at peace in God’s hands now 🙏🏻.

She was merely sending a message of truth that was already out in the public. Besides, people shouldn't be worshipping any pope or idol but God himself.

When Prince died she came out with a tribute to him and of course she sang this song exactly 7 hours and 15 days since he took his love away from the world (from the day he died). Not a dry eye around. I was in NYC in Little Italy about a week after he died and I came across the most amazing Mural of Prince on the side of a building. It just stopped me in my tracks. He died a few months after David Bowie died. This was the year the music died......Love you guys. Have you done Alanis Morirsette yet? Also, Dido- awesome female voices. Both Alternative rock

Back then her haircut was just a huge deal. Scandalous! Everybody talked about it! But this girl could do ANYTHING with her voice. It could sound breathy, like a flute, then it could go straight into something strong like a trumpet. She was just beautiful, and her voice was AMAZING. She has had a hard, strange time since then. This is still an amazing song, and she did an even better job with it than Prince did. And I love everything Prince did.

Prince’s manager Steve Fargnoli also managed Sinead O’Connor. He asked Prince if Sinead can record it, and he said yes. Originally, he wrote it for the band he was working with called The Family. But Sinead version was way better. Yes, Prince and Sinead had an altercation, and they didn’t get along... and yes, they didn’t meet until after she had recorded the song, but Prince was very aware of her recording it. Her voice sounded "country" in the context of 21st century cliches of country singers, but she's from Ireland, as am I, and our ancestors had a major influence on country music back in the day. (Listen to Dolly Parton talk about the connection between Irish and Country music). So, the little lilts that she places so carefully at the end of certain lines and breaks are just traditional Irish music's influence. Thanks guys for giving this fantastic reaction. There will never be another like Sinéad again. Sinéad's career suffered a major hit when she got on SNL and told the truth about the sexual abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. She tore up a paper portrait of the pope on SNL and the haters brought her down, as they do so many good people with principles. SNL is in NYC, and NYC is still heavily controlled ed by the Cardinal and special monsignors at Saint Patrick's Cathedral. These guys have too much power. Enough politics! This is a song about love, loss and longing. Good on you, Sinéad.

So I was born in western Canada. My mom's name was Kathleen Murphy. All 16 of my gg grandparents were born in Ireland. So I like to think that makes me as Irish as you. I say that lovingly and with all respect. "Our ancestors"... man, that description hit me like a ton of bricks. I am Irish. I am a Celt and have been for 20,000 years. This song and Sinead in general have a great deal of history. She is from Ireland and pretty much sacrificed her career by calling out the Pope at the time for covering up pedophilia within the Catholic Church. Quite the scandal back then (check out the video of her tearing up the pope’s picture). She’s been through hell in her life, abused both mentally and physically. The song was also written by Prince.

People got so angry about the Pope thing they talked about beating her up:
_Sinead O'Connor performed an a cappella cover of Bob Marley's "War" on Saturday Night Live on October 3, 1992, rewriting a few of the lyrics to address child abuse, in addition to the song's initial topics of racism and the horrors of war.
As she finished the song, she produced and tore to shreds a photograph of Pope John Paul II, shouting, "Fight the real enemy!"
In his opening monologue the following week while hosting SNL, actor Joe Pesci insisted that had he been in charge of the show, he would have given O'Connor "such a smack." This echoed an event from the previous year when O'Connor insisted that the National Anthem not be played before her concert at a venue in New Jersey. Frank Sinatra, while performing at that same venue the next night, threatened to "kick her ass."
And Jonathan King, a millionaire British television and record producer, and the executive producer of the BPI Awards, stated in an interview with Billboard that she needed to be spanked for her display of bad manners. Ten years later, King would be convicted of several counts of sexual assault on 14- and 15-year-old boys and sentenced to seven years in prison_

Awe poor Sinead, what a beautiful, creative soul! I think it should be noted that she was 21 when she sang this song, her mother, who she had an extremely complicated relationship with, died 2 years previously in a car accident. When Sinead sings "All the flowers that you planted mamma, in the back yard, all died when you went away" you can see the sadness & grief in her face just before she starts to cry. I think in her mind, throughout this song, it reflected her sadness about her mother passing and thats why its so powerful because she put so much emotion into it. Sinead had a very difficult journey in this life but she never stopped being real or true to herself, she spoke & sang from her heart and although she was troubled & complicated and experienced more than her fair share of abuse & trauma, she always cared deeply and loved humanity. RIP Sinead, you're loved more than you could ever know x

Country music as a whole was basically all decended from Scottish folk music, not Irish. Hillbillies all decended from Scotland and they took folk music and tweeked it to what you see today.

True, but even Prince agreed that Sinead performed it in a way beyond how he originally heard it. This happens sometimes in songwriting. Bob Dylan wrote "All Along The Watchtower" but Jimi Hendrix breathed life into it in a way beyond Dylan's mind. Leonard Cohen wrote "Hallelujah" but Jeff Buckley took it beyond Cohen's vision. Sometimes the songwriter and the song performer are both needed for a song to reach its full potential.

She touches on keening a traditional Gaelic, Irish style of mourning loss often sang at wakes and historically when a person is leaving their family for good (pre-budget travel emigration), I hadn’t thought of that as ‘country’ but maybe country is a broader term than I realised. Sláinte.

For sure - but a large part of country music came from Irish, Gaelic music - so no suprises there are resonances there. I just heard about the tradition of Living Wakes, which you mention, from Cara Dillon, here. th-cam.com/video/ktm3NW_crMg/w-d-xo.html Unbearably moving !

I love how moved you a te by her voice. She really did justice to Prince's lyrics and composition. (Sinead is an Irish singer, that's the sound you're hearing.) She was also ahead of her time. She got in major trouble for criticizing the Pope before all the child sexual abuse stories and the Vatican's cover-up started to come to light. She was out on a limb speaking out.

    • @wombab143
      @wombab143 4 ปีที่แล้ว

She did that thing tearing up the picture of the pope on Saturday Night Live, right after the X-case in Ireland, where a 14 year old rape victim was judicially prevented from traveling to Britain for an abortion. The abuse stories were coming out in Ireland at the time, America wasn't ready for that gesture yet, but Irish people knew where she was coming from.

I’m pretty sure this song is not about a special dude: ”All the flowers that you planted, MAMA, in the backyard, all died when you went away”. As it was written by Prince, that line makes perfect sense. She was able to emote so much during this because she had some serious shit with her own mother. If you check out her shaved head, before she started covering it, you can see the scars everywhere from where her mother used to just kick the shit out of it

    • @skytripper

The song is about his personal assistant who had to go home due to a death. The flowers planted were planted by his assistant. It’s a love song about him missing his personal assistant. You can hear the story on the podcast “This Is Love” Episode 11 “Nothing Compares to You”.
