Cannot believe this beautiful woman left us today. RIP Sinead
This is the ONE & ONLY Version. She was, She is and will always be, the BEST.
Her version is THE version.
Prince's version of nothing compares 2 u cinematic mix on the "Originals" CD is heaven.
Prince is a God. BUT Sinead’s version is THE version of this song. She made it popular. And made it her own.
No, no, no, we love Sinead ❤️
I haven't heard this in a long time. I forgot just how glorious it is!!
I’ve never heard Prince’s version. I know he wrote a lot of songs for a lot of people.
Her transistions from power to soft vocals and back are flawless.
When Prince performed this song, it went nowhere. When he heard her voice, and style, he gave her this song. And she made it a hit.
Rest In Peace Sinead O'Connor, a courageous and beautiful soul and a gift to this world. You will be missed!
Irish singers can convey pain in their voices like no other
The face of an angel, and a voice that can tear your heart out! He gave it to her, IT'S HERS!
Interesting to note, the entire arrangement was orchestrated by Sinead, along with her band. Prince was enraged at her treatment of the song, probably because she did such an excellent job.
Also interesting to note, she dedicated and devoted this song to her mother. Not about a boy or boyfriend. That's where the tears came from.
@@LKre-vi5oq A turbulent spirit, finally at peace! R.I.P.
Prince was a genius. I think this is one of the saddest songs ever written and Sinéad brings a unique raw emotion with her interpretation. Amazing.
A former colleague went to see prince here in New zealand not long before he died, and as he started to play this song, he said a woman behind him said "why is he playing this, this isn't his song". He said he turned around, looked her dead in the eye and said "are you serious? Get out" 🤣
@@JAZPER53 wrong, prince wrote the song. Sinead made it famous but prince wrote it.
prince wriote this?? ...the more you know 😲
@@paulharper4196 he gave it to her to sing, same as "when you were mine" to Cyndi Lauper: cause he knew that they would deliver the songs in a way that were more true to the message than he could do. Prince didn't give songs away without serious intent to the art.
@@randyrandall8274 I wouldn't say "gave away". Prince let "The Family" record it and how and when Sinead acquired permission is not clear- back in the day there was a Prince / Sinead quarrel.
We do know that Prince (and now his estate) still has ownership of the song- as Sinead was Denied use for her 2022 documentary.
Nevertheless, the Purple genius wrote amazing lyrics and Sinead's version is incredible. 💜
I am Irish I saw Sinead sing on two occasions, note perfect and a powerhouse of a woman. She is tiny with the force of ten people, super proud to be Irish. She is a national treasure. Thank you for a lovely reaction.
The 90s song
That tear she shed’s shows she put her ALL into this song. She deserves a world wide apology for the backlash when she ripped the pope’s pic. The world didn’t know then, but we know now!
How true!
Yep, screw the Catholic Church.
@@Ms.Andrist How about "screw those guilty and those who covered it up"?
Nobody is guilty by association.
People like you painting with broad brushes are the problem in this world.
@@dherman0001 Dude, I hate the Catholic Church and not really fond of Christians in general.

Sinead is a real talent. Everyone turned on her and then went to sleep on her, but Sinead and Tracy Chapman were talents not to be ignored back then. Sinead was powerful
I love how her face goes through all the emotions of anger, defiance, mocking, sadness, pleading, etc.
Good observation ❤️
Her performance is outstanding. Oh, and she was gorgeous too.
Ireland produces many, many great bands and singers. They know how to celebrate...They know how to mourn and emote their pain.
The Corrs and The Cranberries are just a few 😍 ♥

When this song came out in early 1990, it was the original. Prince had written it but had never recorded or released a studio version himself. So in a sense, this really *is* the original and definitive version because it reached No.1 all over the world, sold millions, and it was Sinead's performance that had made this song an international hit.
That's right. Prince agreed for her to be the one to record it. It's not like it was a shock to him that she made his song--that he hadn't recorded--a hit.
@@J_Gamble Not true, she wasn't the first. The song first appeared on The Family's album on Paisley Park in 1985. But it was an obscure song not many people (except Prince die-hard fans) knew about. And her take on it (the arrangement) is very different. th-cam.com/video/bmywGLVlwTg/w-d-xo.html
@@dummytree Good to know. Thanks.
Correct! Sinead made this song popular

She cry and sing at same time. She put all her tears and broken soul in this song. This was an anthem in 1990 for me (I was 17 yo in 1990).
I was 18 and had my heart broken the first time. I had this song on repeat.
Same, I remember crying in a pub toilets with a broken heart and this song in the background 🙈
I was 20 years old when I first heard this song on the radio. I was totally blown away. To this day I have never heard a song sung so emotionally.
I was 10. This was my favorite.
Lol I was 20 and our 80's and 90's were the best ♥️
PRINCE WROTE THIS SONG AND GAVE IT TO SINEAD TO SING. THAT WAS HIS GENIUS.
Prince wrote the song for his side project The Family and was on the debut album basically as filler. Prince said that he was never interested in recording it himself as he would never do the lyrics the justice they deserved and it was only after O'Connors success with it that he began performing it live.
Wow ! You learn something every day !
No, he DID NOT write it for her. He wrote it for The Family who recorded it and sung it years before she did.
th-cam.com/video/_ZlzN0Gtpp8/w-d-xo.html
Ya he is a genius. You know that he chased her out of his house! He is a legend RIP.
Yeah he didn't give it to her. He was known for trying to get the ownership rights to his music back. He was pissed about her success with his song. According to Sinead he hit her and she had run out of his out to stop being attacked
Her voice cuts through the lyrics like a knife! Did you notice she was crying by the end of the video...💔 😢?
There's a story behind that famous tear. Apparently Sinead's mother had passed away not too long before this video was filmed, and the line "All the flowers that you planted in the back yard / all died when you went away" totally set her off because that's exactly what happened in her own mother's back yard shortly before - you even hear her adding the word "mama" into the line, where it wasn't intentionally written there. Sinead says she had a very troubled relationship with her mother and that this line hit her hardest of all. It really shows here
@@BardOfAndromeda I was not aware her mother passed...thanks for the info!
A 21st Century Heretic I knew the story about her mum but didn’t twig that she’d added Mama to the lyrics which, when you think about it, doesn’t make sense for the story of the song but is perfect for her version. Love it 💕
@@BardOfAndromeda FYI, the line "mama" is in the original version, which is written from the perspective of a male and was the only line in the song where she didn't switch genders.

She’s not a 1-hit wonder. She had at least another couple of hits, but yes, this is biggest. Brilliant interpretation

WHAT fool said that??? Don't show your ignorance.
Yeah, Troy was a great song too, for those who don't know it, check it out.
Sinead is another unbreakable spirit, but she breaks our hearts when she sings because she bares her soul, the pain, the tenderness, the fury, what a masterpiece of emotion!❤️
Wtf are you talking about? "Unbreakable spirit" her spirit is so broken she has completely lost her mind, 8 suicide attempts in one year, Her spirit has left the building.
Listen to her version of Silent Night ... Awesome
@@farqsideways5679 What do you know of how she feels and what pain she felt to attempt suicide? The only thing that matters is that she lives on and hopefully finds peace in her soul for what ails her.If you have never been on the brink of giving in to those dark thoughts which pull you to death you should keep silent. Be kind and don't mock tributes to her. What's unbreakable in her is all the passion she gave of herself to her music that will live on no matter what else happens to her.
Decades ago when I was a teen, the camp counselor in charge of theater and drama at a Christian college's summer camp used to hold up this video as top notch acting. The facial expressions, every movement evoked pure, raw feeling. Sinead even began crying while filming this video -- for a song she didn't even write.
At a time when people were trying to distance themselves from Sinead (due to the SNL controversy), this man said no, look at this, this is overwhelming talent.
This IS Prince's version of the song he wrote as he envisioned it being sung.
My upstairs neighbor broke up with his boyfriend and played this on repeat (loudly) for 24 hours.
I never even thought about complaining... I just hope it helped him out. It's been there for me in moments of need.
Its mad that music has the power to touch people in certain ways
That girl just touches you with those eyes and genuine lyrics
I saw an interview where she said this song actually reminded her of her mother who had recently died when she first heard this song. The line about the flowers reminded Sinead of the flowers her mother planted in her yard, thats why she started crying in the video. I always thought that was interesting because its probably the reason she covered the song and was able to make it her own. And of course it a classic.
And it is more sad since her mother abused her mentally and phisically , but she couldn' t hate her . When a parent hurt a child , tje child don't hate their parent , but themselve .
She said that in the Vh1 100 Greatest songs of the 90s special.
This song is a top 5 in my lifetime playlist..
Rest in POWER tonight Sinead - your troubled soul has found its peace at last
Tears of heartbreak for a women who was so amazing. Rest in peace Sinead with your beautiful son.

So back when I was a teenager we never even heard Prince sing this song. There wasn’t even a video of him singing it on MTV. The Prince video you find on YT was just a bunch of clips done after the fact from various performances. So, when Sinead sang it we had “nothing 2 compare it 2”.
💯
Yes From Houston 👍
Texan Lioness the last line of your comment was SO cute. I just love it. You seem like a cool chick!!!
Exactly.
craig 22 Right - just pointing out his version of it was not being compared to hers when it came out.
When this came out I didn't know Prince wrote it. 🤷🏼♂️
Everytime I see her shed a tear in this video it kills me!! 😢
As others have said Prince's version was almost completely unknown when Sinead's came out. So no backlash from fans of Prince's version.
The song was unknown because Prince had already 500 more. BUT! Prince was famous enough at that moment. O'Connor's promoter knew what he had to choose, he was smart and gave to the song a twist of mainstream...
That first album by Sinéad was a delight in so many senses. I listened to it thousands of times.
oskarobit She was so good in the Pink Floyd ‘The Wall’ concert in Berlin. She sang ‘Mother’. Some of the boys from The Band were there too. 💖👍👍

RIP to our beautiful Sinead. The daughter of Ireland. Sadly missed as you were laid to rest on Tuesday.
A classic! This song was number 1 for multiple weeks in 1990. It was like yesterday. I can't believe 30 years has passed !
She was a rebel, when being a rebel was not really a good idea. She was ostracized, and I hate that we have a limited amount of songs from her because of the people who scorned her. I don't know much about her story, because I was very young.
She was sexually abused by a family member and as a result rebelled especially against the Catholic Church. That's why she famously tore up a picture of the pope.
She had bi-polar, offended a ton of people and became a Buddhist nun.
@@deirdremacnamara9885 I had no idea that she was sexually abused. Thank you for that information.
She repeatedly publicly protested about the catholic priests involved in global child abuse and the cover-up by the Vatican, media and governments...and paid the price. Tragic
@@deirdremacnamara9885 "just rebelled against the catholic church" she has publicly supported the provos before
A delightful song, you seriously can’t dislike this one. When I first heard this it took me, all of 30 seconds to like it.
It feels like she is singing to you. Definitely feel the emotion, and you can relate and feel what she is feeling.
Mesmerising, once she locks eyes with you, your in her world, raw emotion, platinum pearls and golden glass, RIP SWEETHEART.
Prince never recorded this song on any of his albums!! Sinead was given this song and it rocketed her to fame! Afterwards Prince would sing it at concerts mostly due to it being loved thanks to SINEAD... Btw Sinead had a crazy abusive childhood by her mother and became a punk rock singer after her mother died in a car crash when she was 18... She channelled her emotions from her child abuse into her music becoming a huge punk rock singer! Check out her song TROY live in London 1988... It's recorded live yet the TH-cam video plays her live recording over the official video imaging... You will hear the power of her voice and her emotions capitaved the crowds she played for! She is best live!! THANK YOU for reacting to SINEAD! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Not sure if he put on any of his albums but there’s a Prince version of this song on spotify
Medicina, you're wrong Prince recorded this as a demo. After 'The Revolution' fell apart and the former members were in several projects like 'Wendy and Lisa' and 'The Family' he helped 'The Family' and one of the songs he gave them was this one. If you don't believe you can search for that version at youtube. He didn't gave that to Sinead, for a matter of fact he was about to put this on single, and right before that Sinead did it, and that was the reason why he was mad at Sinead. And well it is recorded and you can find it at 'The Hits and B-sides', a compilation album with a few newer songs like 'peach'.
@@xXTheoLinuxXx right so i meant he never released this song as his own before Sinead released it, even if he recorded a demo privately.. That's why i think its more "her" song ... and its definitely not a cover song.
And I do believe you cuz she got rights to record it from The Family and Prince did try to intervene on Sinead recording it, before* she recorded it, and she has a story he was hitting her in the face (with a pillow) and arguing with her to not record it. Apparently he didn't like her foul mouth and strong aggressive style... She made the song a huge success though as we all know... Afterwards Price did record it for release (Hits & B Sides) and also performed it live which you can see on TH-cam..
If you went through a breakup in the 90's, this is the song you would turn to. On CD of course!
Oh, yes! 💯
Lol you sure got that right!! I remember that very well! Wow what memories!! ❤️
Oh and it def wasn’t aCD for me!!lmao
Too true!! My ultimate breakup song :(

Her mother had just passed away and this was dedicated to her, allegedly the video was meant to have several versions spliced together.
The tears are real and it was decided just to show this version as it showed such emotion and it was shot in one take.
Her mother was an abusive pig
Wonderful miss O'Connor still in pain with personal demons only wish best for her beautiful insightful song
Since this song came out it touches me from the first intro...not to mention her voice with all the pain in it. The suffering. We can be so happy to have had her in our youth. And nice to see it still works on you young people ! She left us with this treasure,
She has that Irish Lilt to her voice that is so beautiful. I was a huge Prince fan and I love her version.
She had lost her beloved mother before she recorded this incredible song. That was a very large contribution to the emotional impact everyone feels when listening to this.
One of the greatest songs ever recorded! I still remember the first time I heard this. I just woke up on a school day (I was a senior in high school) and I absolutely KNEW it would be a #1 hit!!! This is the only good version of the song. I've heard them all. Nothing compares 2 this version!!!
When this came out Most were unaware that prince even wrote it because it was very much her song nobody cared who wrote it cuz she crushed it
Class. She had absolute class performing this song.
What Sinéad did to this song is like what
Whitney did with 'I will always love you- Dolly Parton.. or
KD Lang did with Hallelujah- Leonard Cohendid
these ladies epitomized those songs. Prince, Dolly Parton and Leonard Cohen knew their song were forever changed and praised those ladies openly.
Breaks my heart everytime - such a beautifully poignant and powerful cover - breathtaking
Those are real tears, when she made this video she started crying for real, so they didn't edit the video. She is Irish.
Such a beautiful sound to emanate from such a troubled soul. We were privileged Sinead, so privileged that you shared your voice with the world. RIP sweet lady, you will be forever remembered and forever missed.🙏
Did anyone else see the tears rolling down her face at 7.06 the emotion is so real.
I'm 40, I remember when this came out, I was VERY young, but very tentative to the stories that songs would tell, and I'd be crying during the instrumental bridge because I was holding back tears trying to sing the words till that point. And to this day, I can't sing the rest of the song because I'd be crying through it and never learned the lyrics. I was very young, very in touch with feelings. She sounded sad on the radio, and I think my heart broke for her. 💔
Carole Haddon same
When she recorded this, she’d just lost her mum, she didn’t realise she was crying
Tears of joy and relief then. Sinead talked about abuse and her mom being possesed by the devil. Not a happy childhood and/or relationship with her mom.

Sinead O'Connor made 10 albums. Plenty of gold to dig for.
Watching this a couple of days after Ireland's beloved warrior queen, Sinead O'Connor, has passed away.
A nation is in the deepest mourning. Thanks for this...
For the record, Sinead's version is the definitive version. Period.
The history of the track though is years before her version. Prince wrote it for one of his side-projects in 1984. "The Family" recorded it in 1985 and it was on their album of that name and that year. Prince's manager at that time became Sinead's manager a few years later and that's how the song came to her attention. It wasn't offered by Prince nor by The Family. Prince seemingly wasn't super happy with her covering a song of his - as he refused permission for all covers of his songs if the artists were to ask him.
Once it became a worldwide smash hit, Prince began to introduce it to his live sets, where it stayed for the next 25 years - being played at most gigs and even in his final piano-only gig. He released a live version as part of a hits compilation in 1993 that became HIS definitive version - a duet with the great Rosie Gaines.
I hear the songs as two different beasts as the arrangements between Sinead's and his live versions are so different.
However, the final twist is that his original demo was released after his death. And there is a closer arrangement to the Sinead version on there. I think his demo with saxophone by the masterful Eric Leeds is - to my ear - a more poignant version than Sinead's.
I attended a Prince concert where he said of this song, in a pointed way, "this is how it should be sung". I love Prince but I thought "no way man, Sinead's version is the ultimate and trying to put it down just makes you look bad."
I just listened to Prince's demo version of this song and I really like it. Then I listened to the live show version with Rosie and I dislike it so much I could not listen to the full song.
As a woman, I can relate to a beautiful woman's voice as singing how I feel. Very relatable. ❣️
It really does make you want to find the guy that broke her heart ....

You've gotta have eyes like that to get away with that haircut! Apparently, at the outset of her career (ie, before "Mandinka" and "The Lion and the Cobra"), her label suggested she dress "girlier". The buzz cut was her response!

Prince was the GOAT and I know he hated covers, but Sinead took it, improved it and made this song a testament, its her song as much as it is Prince's. She immortalised a song that probably would have been lost in the Prince catalogue.
She was our irish rose best singer of that song ever rip sineid 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪☘☘
She is something so special! I was 20 when the sun came out and I’m 53 now and this song still is bad ass and one of my favorite songs ever! I have a 14-year-old daughter knows this song to my heart.
