      Interesting to note, the entire arrangement was orchestrated by Sinead, along with her band. Prince was enraged at her treatment of the song, probably because she did such an excellent job.
      Also interesting to note, she dedicated and devoted this song to her mother. Not about a boy or boyfriend. That's where the tears came from.

      There's a story behind that famous tear. Apparently Sinead's mother had passed away not too long before this video was filmed, and the line "All the flowers that you planted in the back yard / all died when you went away" totally set her off because that's exactly what happened in her own mother's back yard shortly before - you even hear her adding the word "mama" into the line, where it wasn't intentionally written there. Sinead says she had a very troubled relationship with her mother and that this line hit her hardest of all. It really shows here

    she was actually very famous and popular she was not mainstream she had a lot of hits in Europe he was usually only played on USA alternative radio stations prior to this song she has a another album that was Kick-Ass so she ended up covering prince's song which took her to the top, her downfall was Saturday night Live when she tore the picture of the Pope on live TV and then all the Catholics freaked out, she was protesting because of all the pedophile priest, so she was black mark/blacked balled .. times have changed and now you can do anything you want and still be an idiot famous Hollywood actor or singer..

Afterwards Prince would sing it at concerts mostly due to it being loved thanks to SINEAD... Btw Sinead had a crazy abusive childhood by her mother and became a punk rock singer after her mother died in a car crash when she was 18... She channelled her emotions from her child abuse into her music becoming a huge punk rock singer! Check out her song TROY live in London 1988... It's recorded live yet the TH-cam video plays her live recording over the official video imaging... You will hear the power of her voice and her emotions capitaved the crowds she played for! Medicina, you're wrong Prince recorded this as a demo. After 'The Revolution' fell apart and the former members were in several projects like 'Wendy and Lisa' and 'The Family' he helped 'The Family' and one of the songs he gave them was this one. If you don't believe you can search for that version at youtube. He didn't gave that to Sinead, for a matter of fact he was about to put this on single, and right before that Sinead did it, and that was the reason why he was mad at Sinead. And well it is recorded and you can find it at 'The Hits and B-sides', a compilation album with a few newer songs like 'peach'.

      @@xXTheoLinuxXx right so i meant he never released this song as his own before Sinead released it, even if he recorded a demo privately.. That's why i think its more "her" song ... and its definitely not a cover song.
      And I do believe you cuz she got rights to record it from The Family and Prince did try to intervene on Sinead recording it, before* she recorded it, and she has a story he was hitting her in the face (with a pillow) and arguing with her to not record it. Apparently he didn't like her foul mouth and strong aggressive style... She made the song a huge success though as we all know... Afterwards Price did record it for release (Hits & B Sides) and also performed it live which you can see on TH-cam..

    For the record, Sinead's version is the definitive version. Period.
    The history of the track though is years before her version. Prince wrote it for one of his side-projects in 1984. "The Family" recorded it in 1985 and it was on their album of that name and that year. Prince's manager at that time became Sinead's manager a few years later and that's how the song came to her attention. It wasn't offered by Prince nor by The Family. Prince seemingly wasn't super happy with her covering a song of his - as he refused permission for all covers of his songs if the artists were to ask him.
    Once it became a worldwide smash hit, Prince began to introduce it to his live sets, where it stayed for the next 25 years - being played at most gigs and even in his final piano-only gig. He released a live version as part of a hits compilation in 1993 that became HIS definitive version - a duet with the great Rosie Gaines.
    I hear the songs as two different beasts as the arrangements between Sinead's and his live versions are so different.
    However, the final twist is that his original demo was released after his death. And there is a closer arrangement to the Sinead version on there. I think his demo with saxophone by the masterful Eric Leeds is - to my ear - a more poignant version than Sinead's.

    Little known fact: Sinead and Natalie Portman are the same person!! Think about it, has anyone ever seen both of them together at the same time?? 🤔🤔This "Natalie Portman" person is skilled actress, Harvard grad, and a world class beauty that doesn't seem to age. She looks the same as when I first saw her 20+ years ago. So would you be surprised if she is also a great singer with one of the biggest hits of the 90s?? Maybe Sinead created this "Natalie Portman" in order to work without having that whole Pope controversy following her forever; and since she couldn't sing because everyone knows the sound of her voice, she became an actress. Then "coincidentally", a couple years after this song, Sinead fades from the public spotlight and "Natalie Portman" becomes famous. Just enough time for Sinead to study acting.....🤷‍♂️😆😆

    She has a lot of great songs. 'Troy' is stunning. Her cover of the Elton John/Bernie Taupin song, 'Sacrifice' probably hasn't been heard very often.

      Not weird. We have a bit left of the same thing in English, like the c in case, action and octagon is hard because it's beside a broad vowel, and soft beside many slender vowels (ice) Irish and Gaelic consonants can change depending on broad or slender vowels beside them. Beside an e or i an S is pretty much always a sh sound.

    I'm a huge Prince fan. Sinead O'Connor not so much.
    But her version of this is the definitive version.
    Prince wrote and did a demo of this and gave it to one of his stable of bands, The Family, but barely anyone heard it until Sinead covered it.
    He didn't do a proper recording of this until after Sinead had popularised it.

    • @jasonnelson9707
      @jasonnelson9707 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! For that reason I hate when people say Sinead was doing a fiver version. Nope. Yes Prince wrote it, but any version after hers was a cover.

    • @Pulsar77
      @Pulsar77 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He had done a proper recording in 1984, but it wasn't released until 2018: th-cam.com/video/cpGA0azFdCs/w-d-xo.html

    • @mikeoliver5642
      @mikeoliver5642 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Pulsar77 This is clearly a studio demo. It's not properly mixed or produced. The version that The Family issued in 1985 uses the arrangement in Prince's demo. Three years after Sinéad's version was a success he included a live version on Hits 2, and that sounded more like Sinéad's version than his demo.

      @@mikeoliver5642 I still have the Family's album. THAT is the"original" release of this song, the one sung by St. Paul Peterson himself!

      listen to the version on his version on his hits album. it's a duet with rosie gaines, and sinead o'connor can't hold a candle.

    Don't even bother looking for the Prince performance, Sinead's is far better. Just an exquisite voice.

  • @j.jennings1722
    @j.jennings1722 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    This is actually the definitive version, in my opinion, seeing as the Prince song wasn't a hit and most people came to know the song from this version. It's kind of like how Bob Dylan wrote and recorded the song, All Along the Watchtower, but it became a big hit for Jimi Hendrix. Bob even said that the song was no longer really his anymore, that it had become Jimi's song, because everyone knows his version, not Bob's. Great song!

    It's really about the death of her mother. She was abused by her. Sinead died recently - suicide she was grieving the death of her 17yr old son who hanged himself. An iconic talent lost to the world.
