Let's give Mrs Dolly Parton her praise too. She wrote this song. She actually said that Whitney sang it better than she did, and she wrote it. Thank you Mrs Dolly for the song.
I love Whitney's version; the soul and technicality of it but there's something about the guitar intro of Dolly's original that gets me immediately. Both of them are perfect enhancements of the stories they are the soundtrack to; Whitney with the big epic love and Dolly's is softer and more bittersweet...more platonic. Whitney emphasises the passion while Dolly emphasises the sadness. This is one of those rare examples where my favourite version of the song depends on what mood I'm in.
Kevin Costner said she walked in and just did the song. Everyone on set made no noise and at one point she glances at the director and tben carries on. Perfect take. No retake done.

Interesting fact about this song. After Dolly had a hit with this song Elvis wanted to record it. He had some sort of rule where he had to buy the rights to the song before he would sing it. So he could control it forever. Dolly turned him down and good thing she did or we may have never gotten the Whitney version. RIP Whitney you and your voice live on.
The tragic death of Whitney is something that still gets under my skin. I remember being little, like 8 or 9, and my cousins and I would sing with our hairbrushes as our microphones along with Whitney while watching “The Bodyguard”. My grandma LOVED her some Kevin Costner and we watched that movie numerous times and every time her vocals would bring goosebumps to my skin. Then to find out that Dolly Parton actually wrote this song….that’s what really hit home with me. Dolly was and is my favorite singer of all time, and even I can say that Whitney was meant to sing this song. Even Dolly knew it. No one could hit that note like Whitney could. Make a grown woman cry.
I can't believe there are people on the planet who've never heard Whitney. However I can say that it feels good to see this generation vibin out to her beautiful voice.
Me neither. I feel like you’d have to be born on a different planet not to know who she is. You’d think they would have heard of her thru their parents.
They've 100% heard this. I've watched a lot of reactions and you can pick up on some pretty clear non verbal cues. They actually do better at hiding than most people but it's still cool to see them listening to the whole song and appreciating it.
Same. This was Whitney at the height of her singing powers. And a strikingly beautiful woman, at that. She seemingly had it all. Makes me think of her song "Didn't We Almost Have It All."
From Buffalo... she sang it at the Super Bowl the Bills were in- right after she finished, I turned to my sister and said that was the best version ever sung!
It's almost impossible to believe that today there could be someone who has never heard this song, never got excited about this song, with this song ... with this incredible voice. No autotune, no special effects, no PC tweaks. Just the one and only Whitney 😍
Her Mother, Cissy Houston, was the in the founding members of the Sweet Inspirations, Elvis Pressley's backup singers that he had working for him starting in his Vegas years (even a little before) from 1969 up until he passed away in 1977.
I’m old enough to be a #1 fan of Dionne Warwick-still listen to her; so amazing😍. Never knew they were related💞. Whitney is an icon; legendary❤️. Growing up parents listened to 50’s & 60’s. I grew up 70’s 80’s 90’s (music went downhill after that). Familiar with several genres-many decades. This song will outlive us all😍. Bette Midler “The Rose” is another.
Dolly is a great talent, & wrote the song. But, this song will ALWAYS belong to Whitney Houston. Her voice was PERFECT , LIKE AN ANGEL. No one has been able to come close to her voice. And the movie too, with her great friend Kevin Costner. So sad that her life turned out so bad. God Bless You Forever Whitney. ❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯
"I feel like she sayin' she love me!" lmao Whitney does not play. One of the greatest voices there will ever be. And also, who wants to watch the Bodyguard now?
Vanessa I truly believe she was the best female voice of all time and just cut too short man every time I hear her songs I hold it and I value it and I thank God for it she was amazing
Hi Vànessa I agree one of a kind in our lifetime amazing amazing voice no one will ever match her talent and she's sad how it things went but she was truly given to us for a gift we ought to be feel so lucky that she left those things for us all this art it's beautiful songs may she rest in peace thank you Whitney
I saw her perform when she was 19 at Clowes Hall in Indianapolis. She was young and nervous, but you could tell she had raw, God-given talent. You had the feeling she was going on to do great things. I’ll never forget it.
Whitney’s voice was pure perfection and so powerful! I never heard her sing a bad note. Y’all need to watch The Bodyguard it’s a beautiful love story and a very good movie. The making of it was the beginning of a deep and true lifelong friendship between them - I remember when Kevin Costner gave the eulogy at her funeral. They weren’t ever romantically involved in real life - he’s a true gentleman and he’s been married to his wife for well over 30 years now. He and Whitney shared a very special platonic bond with each other. R.I.P. our sweet Whitney. We all lost you way too soon. The entire world misses you so very much, sweet lady, with all our hearts ♥️
It's so weird and cool how you can LITERALLY hear a song thousands of times over the years, and it STILL gives you goosebumps and brings tears to your eyes. This song will never get old, not sung by Whitney.
Except, Cissy Houston, Dee Dee Warwick, and especially Dionne Warwick, 3 ladies from whom she inherited her singing genes. But outside of her family there's 100 singers tech not only touch her but blow her away. However, I will concede that she was off her time and to her fans you probably can't be beaten.
Not currently but old Mariah could. It's sad that Mariah has let herself go as far as she has. And I'm not talking about the weight I can care less if she's curvier. But her proclivities to other things have damaged your voice let's just say
No one could sing that song like Whitney. Even Dolly Parton said, she herself couldn’t do that song justice the Way Whitney did. There’s numerous videos on here of Dolly saying that.
One of the many attributes of her voice, is how effortless it was for her to produce so much volume. The amount of emotion her beautiful, feminine, powerful voice produced was unparalleled. And it all seemed so effortless for her. She was truly blessed by God with this voice. May she rest with our Heavenly Father above for all eternity. I know with Jesus, she has the peace she never found in this life.
I saw a tweet about this recently that was like "Dolly Parton wrote I will Always Love You and Jolene in the same day. That's like if Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa and wrote Jolene on the same day."
We are failing our kids if they're growing up not knowing who Whitney is. I'm glad one of them did some research - one of the greatest voices of the 20th century...
It's not entirely their fault, they grew up in a strict religious household, didn't even have a phone until they were 18. Cut them some slack. They want to know all genres, that's why their reactions vary.
@@beautifulbliss5883 Ah, I didn't know that. I grew up in a similar home. I didn't know who Michael Jackson was till middle school. I will never forget the moment I found out that Whitney Houston died: I was volunteering at a gala fundraiser for a safe house for abused women. When the the director took the stage to address the crowd she said, “it pains me to inform you all the amazing singer, actor and abuse survivor, Whitney Houston, has died tonight”. The audible gasp in the room was shocking and there were many people who immediately teared up, myself included. Let us all remember what a great artist she was and the lifelong effects of abuse.
Let us also remember what addiction can do to you when help fails you. Everyone speaks of her beautiful side and completely forget about her dark side. She was already using cocaine when she met Bobby, he had only been a drinker. She got HIM hooked on drugs and they spiraled out of control together. If you honor the woman she was accept ALL that she was.
Fun fact: Dolly heard the song as soon as it aired and was so overwhelmed her words she had to pull over she called Whitney and thanked and congratulated her for doing what Whitney does best! Dolly said "Its one of the proudest moments of her life! Dolly and Whitney are legends in thier own right no need to pit them together or keep bringing up Dolly did it first 🤷🏾♂️
I was going to comment on this same thing, since they seemed to enjoy “Jolene” and “9 to 5,” I figured they might like Dolly Parton’s version of IWALY.
The respect they have for a legend(s). Definitely going to subscribe to these young Brothers. Looks like they're the 20 year olds that seem more like 30.
I just finished a documentary on Dolly Parton, the composer of this song. She stated that she now calls it Whitney's song. She goes on to state that she'd never granted permission for anyone to use her music in this way, but that she gained joy from Whitney's treatment and the song was no longer hers....🌈💙
Dolly is always a class act. I really appreciate it when artists respect other artists. It is beautiful to see them being humble and showing recognition.
Reminds me of Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, but when Johnny Cash did a cover Trent Reznor said it was “no longer my song “. One of the most emotional songs..

I must be showing my age, but I can't believe there is anyone who has never heard this song. Every time I hear this song, I am absolutely blown away by what an amazing performance it is.
@Liz Smith I am not about that "lets compare great singers" I love Mariah too, but I feel a need to point out that Mariah notes Whitney as a huge inspiration in her own autobiography this year.
@Reese M It has always been said: Aretha, Mariah and Whitney were the greatest female voices of all time. These are the absolute greats: unbounded talent. After that it is just personal preference, no use of disagreeing with others' opinions.
You know, I've heard this song ten thousand times. And as someone who doesn't have kids, I suddenly understand what it's like to be a parent watching my children see something magical for the first time. This brought tears to my eyes, fellas. Whitney Houston was the voice of a generation, perfect pitch, perfect tone, perfect everything. She was a prima donna - a master of her craft, a voice that we'll never ever hear again. Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, these artists stopped when they heard Whitney begin to sing. Her loss was felt around the world. It's still felt. The absence of her presence is like a hole in the heart of those who loved her but her voice, thank goodness, is still around for us to hear. She didn't 'transcend race', like a lot of my fellow white people would say, she was an empowered black woman with an incredible, incredible gift. Thank you, boys. This was awesome.
As a mom, your statement about watching your children see something magical, touched my heart. That was spot on 💓 As a white person I have never even used the phrase "transcend race" and find it odd and sad that anyone would. Whitney was just Whitney, pure awesome and gone too early 💓
I was so into to the song I literally did not see those boys for a couple of minutes...lol. I adjusted my eyes and said, "damn, I forgot y'all was there." It was awesome to bring back the memories of her soulful voice.
I totally agree! Watching these kiddos see these people for the first time. When we seen these musicians from their start. Example Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston while we were growing up. They are amazing kids to review and get their own view on things with no one to spoil these fine musicians before they hear them for themselves. Amazing and breath taking to watch. Sure brings back good memories for me as growing up. And thank you for showing us that this is about your heart and soul not about race or anything. If more people were like you two kids in this world it would be a better place to live. GOD BLESS YOU!!

Listen to her sing the National Anthem. No one will ever top it. She had the most amazing voice and was just as great if not better live.
And it was effortless. The best national anthem in a time people were proud to be Americans. Very Patriotic very bright and true.
I agree.. best national anthem ever! Hope these young men check it out 😀
YES!! Ive listened to it many times over the years. She was perfection!! 💙
Agreed! No one will ever sing or top Whitney, most beautiful voice! So very sad she left this earth so young. Rip Whitney
@lesliebell10 you're absolutely correct. Many have tried, none have succeeded!
She was The Greatest of all Time. My heart breaks that we lost her so young😢
My heart breaks to see that they don't know her ore what she looked like...
“I feel like she’s saying she love me.” Lol. You guys are adorable.
So did everybody hearing her song❤️
I'm sorry I'm old enough to be your momma, but you boys are so cute! All the feels! And yes, Whitney was a goddess. Peace.
He put it to words on how I felt when I first heard this song.
Teri Chace I’m old enough to be their mother also. So adorable in a sweet way. Lol.
I cried when he said that
Remember Whitney had pure vocals no auto-tune was ever needed for her voice she was truly one of the greatest singers of all time!!!
Yes! Loved all of her songs! Such talent & beauty!
I totally agree, love love whitney
💯💯💯
I miss our world without Whitney in it.
Office Yoga smart Dolly!
Heard that before. Kinda ironic that Whitney Houston's mom was a backup singer for Elvis.
Fate
Another fun fact: Dolly Parton wrote “I Will Always Love You” and “Jolene” (which the Twins reacted to in a previous post) IN THE SAME DAY! OMG!
Elvis wanted half rights to it
The tragic death of Whitney is something that still gets under my skin.
Jimi, Janis, Elvis, Kurt, Whitney, Michael…the success was too much for them.
RIP to the greats.
I can't believe there are people on the planet who've never heard Whitney. However I can say that it feels good to see this generation vibin out to her beautiful voice.
I was born in 92 at the height of her career and i love whitney
Me neither. I feel like you’d have to be born on a different planet not to know who she is. You’d think they would have heard of her thru their parents.
I tear up when I see her on video. She had so many years left with her amazing voice. Sad.
They've 100% heard this. I've watched a lot of reactions and you can pick up on some pretty clear non verbal cues. They actually do better at hiding than most people but it's still cool to see them listening to the whole song and appreciating it.
@@menwithven8114 they actually said they had heard the chorus before in movies and stuff.
I still get the chills when I hear her sing like this..rest in peace Whitney, you were one on a million
I was just about to comment the same thing.
Same...got goosebumps and a bit weepy
NEVER be another Whitney Houston 😪
Played this song when my ex got married... To someone else 😭😭😭😭😭
Same. This was Whitney at the height of her singing powers. And a strikingly beautiful woman, at that. She seemingly had it all. Makes me think of her song "Didn't We Almost Have It All."
Y’all need to hear Whitney destroy “The Star-Spangled Banner,” no one has sang it better sense. I legit teared up. There’s no one like Whitney.
Agree, her singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" is the standard by which all others are compared to.
Completely agree!
I think Mariah Carey's version is the best but I love Whitney's rendition
Marvin gaye's version is so good too
From Buffalo... she sang it at the Super Bowl the Bills were in- right after she finished, I turned to my sister and said that was the best version ever sung!
It's almost impossible to believe that today there could be someone who has never heard this song, never got excited about this song, with this song ... with this incredible voice. No autotune, no special effects, no PC tweaks. Just the one and only Whitney 😍
This just brought me to tears. Miss Houston you’re truly truly missed.
It brought me to tears also😢
Same! ever time!
She sold 20 million copies of this Country song written by a white girl from the Tennessee holla!!
And owned it!
My childhood comfort voice
Love Whitney. 💕
OMG! I cried too! 💙💜💗
Whitney Houston was a phenomenal singer who died way before her time. Her aunt is Dione Warwick, also a phenomenal singer.
Dionne Warwick is her cousin. Yes, Whitney was phenomenal.
I saw Dione Warwick, in person years ago at the Circle Star here in the San Francisco Area. Loved her!
"I feel like she sayin' she love me!" lmao Whitney does not play. One of the greatest voices there will ever be. And also, who wants to watch the Bodyguard now?
I admit... I watched the movie again after watching their reaction. just had to watch that epic love story one more time
I've never seen it but I'm gonna!
Vanessa Sully I watched Bodyguard over and over on VHS back in the day. 😁 It’s such a good movie.
“Goosebumps”
Yes. She gave us goosebumps. She was exquisite.
TOTALLY & COMPLETELY!
Still gives me goosebumps.
It's been awhile since I heard this song.. and I just got goosebumps again!
According to Dolly, Elvis tried to buy the rights to this song...she was glad she saved it for Whitney
Angela Bruehler Exactly! Cha ching 💰💰💰
Nobody else could have ever sung this song and done it any sort of justice except Whitney.
Best decision she made! 👏🏿🙌🏿👍🏿
He sang it to Priscilla they day they got divorced. 😢
Not quite, it's was more that Dolly knew her worth and didn't want to give away half the publishing on a song she already had a no 1 hit on twice.
"I feel like she's saying she loves me." THAT'S HOW WE ALL FEEL WHITNEY IS QUEEN
Yaaasssss! 👑
That’s how Whitney made us all feel. 😂😂She was the greatest
@TeachAble yeah well her music will always be here in the present tense 🥰
The guy in the back was in complete love ☺😆💚
Right
Fun fact. Kevin Costner specifically wanted Whitney Houston for this role. He even gave a eulogy at her funeral.
Him giving her eulogy was one of the best I’ve ever seen

After he declined to work with Madonna.
It's so weird and cool how you can LITERALLY hear a song thousands of times over the years, and it STILL gives you goosebumps and brings tears to your eyes. This song will never get old, not sung by Whitney.
Yes, it has been quite some time since I've heard it and I had goosebumps
It does it to me every time
Always made me cry, I recently lost my husband of 35 years so this time was the hardest.
Exactly. I got goosebumps and started crying. It’s a beautiful song, sung stunningly, and I miss Ms. Houston. 😢
All these years, all these times hearing her sing this...still GOOSEBUMPS!
Still gives me chills and tears in my eyes! Miss you Whitney! RIP
The National Anthem was sung by her like NO OTHER before or after. She had no competition. Ever!
I said the same thing
She was one of a kind! Now she’s an Angel🙏🏼❤️
Yes and it was so good that it was sold as a single and hit platinum!! She was such a great singer. May she RIP.
Whitney NAILED it ! th-cam.com/video/IdcKLuRjIX0/w-d-xo.html
You can probably now understand why “old folks” like me were so devastated when she died. Her voice was so amazing!
I'm only 33 and I too I was devastated.
Christina Gillie I’m 40 and it damn near killed me. First music I purchased with my own money. I thought she was the most beautiful lady in the world.
I am 27 and went bawling my eyes out when she died. Her voice is a gift from God and she did her very best to share it with us.
I cried all damn day.
Heartbroken
This is Dolly Pardon's best song. Whitney did her proud.
Whitney made her Richer than rich.
She has many though.
Whitney actually made this song win awards
YES INDEED! Dolly did it FIRST! But GOTTA say I think Whitney did it better.
@@davidwilliams6925 she did it first because she wrote it.
"I feel like she's saying she'll always love me" you got that right!
She was the most beautiful and talented woman! No-one will ever sing this song like Whitney!
I still prefer the original.
But, Whitney was an amazing singer!
Only one person, Jennifer Hudson. And she sang it at her memorial perfectly.
Except Dolly Parton. She wrote it.
Whitney Houston is the BEST female artist to ever live, she is a Legend God rest her soul
Everyone has their favorite. No need to get carried away!;)
Sorry, Madonna is the best!💅👠
She a great singer but for her limit
Whitney was THE best, that it God's given talent right there!!
She just celebrated her 9th year of sobriety
That guy in the middle, he got hit didn't he, he was hit, he was shot with the voice. It got him!!!!!!
I think he whispers at the end "let's listen again".
Maybe it was the hairclip banging against his forehead, bless him.
It did. He was.
Prolly by the whole package. Her Voice and her Beauty... She was,, something.. for sure..
Dolly Parton wrote this the SAME DAY she wrote “Jolene”!
Wow! I didn't know that. Only that she wrote it as a good bye to her (soon to be) ex.
@@cocochan5526 No. Dolly Parton wrote the song for Porter Waggoner. She was leaving his show.

Lord......... she was something special. beautiful, talented and once in a Generation.
I will never forget the moment I found out that Whitney Houston died:
I was volunteering at a gala fundraiser for a safe house for abused women.
@@Desaundrea, very true. Society is too apt to blame men and not look at women at times.

The control she had in her voice was amazing she nailed every part of the song
The respect they have for a legend(s). Definitely going to subscribe to these young Brothers. Looks like they're the 20 year olds that seem more like 30.
I'm still so sad that we lost her.
I just finished a documentary on Dolly Parton, the composer of this song. She stated that she now calls it Whitney's song. She goes on to state that she'd never granted permission for anyone to use her music in this way, but that she gained joy from Whitney's treatment and the song was no longer hers....🌈💙

Perfect reply. 🙂
