COMPLETE AQUATIC TURTLE DIET | What I Feed My Adult Red Eared Slider

  • In today’s video I discuss what I feed my adult Red Eared Slider on the daily, weekly, and monthly to hopefully answer some new turtle owners’ questions out there! I also diss a few companies that make turtle pellets (ex Zoo Med Reptisticks), because they contain nothing but fillers and low nutritional contents. No, seriously. Ask your vet. My exotic vet informed me that certain turtle pellets are only suitable for your trash bin.
    This feeding guide is based on an ADULT turtle which requires LESS protein (pellets, fish, etc) than a younger, more active and growing turtle.
    You should never feed your turtle scraps, such as bread because these types of foods contain no nutritional value for your turtle. I’ve included some helpful links below for you to continue your research and put together an amazing diet for your omnivorous turtle!
    Lastly, always remember variety is KEY 🔑! Turtles in the wild munch on just about anything that is edible. Do not give in to a stubborn turtle that refuses its greens for pellets. Solely feeding pellets is the “lazy” way to go about your turtles diet, and will surely show its effects as your turtle gets older. Variety. Always

    Why you have covered basking area? Watching turtle while basking is enjoyable

    • @ThatsSoReptii
      @ThatsSoReptii  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I totally agree with you, I covered it more for him than me. He used to always dive off when he noticed someone walking near his tank, but with the cardboard there he can no longer see whats going on around him so he will stay up there even if im around the tank 😂😂. I do agree though, its very relaxing and interesting to watch turtles bask.

    Wow it's amazing your turtle eats quite a lot of vegetables esp. raw leafy green vegetables like romaine lettuce. My turtle for the most part hates vegetables esp. raw leafy green vegetables.

      Mine did too until they had gone several weeks without food after brumation. People also deprive them of food for several days then give them greens and such to get them in the habit of eating vegetables. My sliders used to reject veggies but now they love red lettuce, water hyacinth, frogbit, anacharis etc.

      @RussX5Z 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cletuswyns Really? Wow! So you would advise me to starve my turtle for about 3-4 days or maybe a week and then afterwards my turtle will be willing to eat some vegetables? I heard one person did that to their turtle and their turtle still refuse to eat vegetables but I don't mine giving this 3-4 day starvation method a try for my turtle to at least eat a little vegetables.

      @@RussX5Z ehhhhh I don't think starving them is a good idea unless your turtle is overweight I'm late so I wanna ask how is your turtles?

    Question can i put plastic plants?

    • @ThatsSoReptii
      @ThatsSoReptii  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      depends on the individual turtle. definitely possible, but if your turtle starts ingesting/ biting at the plastic plants you need to take em out

    Should you put the food in the water or above water ?

    • @ThatsSoReptii
      @ThatsSoReptii  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you can put the food directly in the water, but sometimes your turtle wont see the food and it will just sink and cause the water quality to go down.
      the best option ive found is to tong feed each piece one by one. Its tedious but once you get the hang of tong feeding it goes really fast, and no food is wasted

    My turtle is 15 and really has no interest in veggies, his shell is starting to turn kind of light yellow? Is this diet or light?

    • @ThatsSoReptii

      do you have a proper basking setup?
      this means that the platform is big enough for your turtle to get completely out of water comfortably. Also the basking dock must be stable enough to not sink into the water. it needs to be completely dry.
      the you should also have a UVB bulb as well as a bulb for heat

    • @ThatsSoReptii
      @ThatsSoReptii  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      try to show him some tough love and only offer greens for a couple of days until he takes a bite. Also, if your turtle is still young he needs more proteins rather than greens, and as he/she grows older switch to a more green diet rather than protein

    why do you tong feed ??💀, you should really be putting them in the water, and when the pallets are in the water it is easier for them to digest, that is what there designed for, plus if they don't make the water murky why not just put them in 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ and not gonna lie it kind of looks like the metal tongs hurt your turtle mouth😬🤨
