@@spaghettigod1794 No, letting your turtle bask for only 15 minutes a day isn't enough. My turtle usually basks multiple times throughout the day. So I'd say keep your light on for the whole day if you can so your turtle can have more opportunities and time to bask.
A couple years ago my son told me that turtles were actually supposed to be able to pull their head and legs back into their shell! Can you imagine that? I cut back a bit on how much I was feeding them. Little beggers!

My red eared slider (5-6in length) is so picky. It doesn't want to eat any veges, not even fruits lol. Today I tried wrapping a pellet in a small thin piece of lettuce. The result was it took a bite and immediately spit it back out. Then it just moved away from it. 1 hour later, it never took a bite. Sometimes I would leave a 3-4inx2in lettuce leaf overnight and the next morning, it's still intact in perfect condition, haha. The things that he? would eat so far are hard boiled egg, raw shrimp, and pellets. :'( So far he? rejected lettuce, bok choi, cauliflower, grapes (sliced), thinly sliced carrot (from the tip's end), and thinly sliced small piece of apple.

Hi! Do you feed your turtle just pellets? I was told that was too high in protein and could cause pyramiding. I have a turtle myself and have been doing some of my own research. I may think some of your facts are wrong. Turtles need lots of veggies. I don’t know about your turtle types needs but, red ear sliders do need veggies. Maybe the next time you do a video like this add the veggies part? And please mention live food little bit more! This is giving the impression that turtles only need a pellet diet. Which is wrong. :(
Yes! They absolutely need veggies. I offer my painted romaine and red leaf lettuce (although he doesn't really eat it). Diamondback terrapins are more carnivorous, and mine is a juvenile at that, so I haven't started him on veggies yet (though he has tried a little duckweed). And as for live foods, I've actually done several videos on the topic, but I'll be sure to be more clear next time 😄 I appreciate your feedback!

This is the same rule I use as far as the amount to feed my turtles and it works well. I read the back of turtle food containers and just laugh because if I fed the amount they could eat in 15 minutes it would be wayyyyyy too much and their shells would be highly deformed by now. I have 5 adults of different species and sizes and they get fed twice a week with the amount of food that would fill each of their heads. When I go out of town for a week I set up an automatic feeder because I feel bad even though I know they would be fine. I just like to have that extra security in case something happened and I wasn't able to make it home when I thought
Sooo... I have a yellow belly slider, her shell is 6" in length her age is unknown. Would it make sence to feed her veggies daily and reptomin pellets 3x a week? The pellet directions say you should feed 2x a day? I'm sooo confused 😩. My painted turtle that I abducted from the lake a few days ago is a guestimated three weeks old. I pick out the smallest mealworms from the container and feed him one mealworm for breakfast, one for lunch, and one right before bed. I leave the biggest mealworms in the bin to, ya know, do their thang and make more mealworms. Yay for mealworm breeding! (He also gets some fruit and veggies when I succumb to his begging)

So... I've had my baby turtle (RES) for almost a whole year now... and I'm pretty sure turtles are supposed to grow a little bigger after a year, but my turtle hasn't grown. I feel prepared after watching yours and some other TH-camrs videos. So I was wandering if being on vacation for a week still applies for hatchlings or younger turtles? You said that you have left for a week before but would that still apply for my baby Musk? Also i wouldn't worry if your baby doesn't eat the lettuce, since they sometimes won't eat it as hatchlings. if you could get someone to come over halfway through the week to check on the turtle and feed him, that would be best....adults would be fine, but with a baby i wouldn't want to leave them unattended for that long.
Ha I started measuring Rufus food by the size of his head, because I didn't want him to get fat. Yeah his legs are starting to pour out of his shell like a loaf of bread out of a baking pan. What a coincidence. Rufus is a tiny baby snapping turtle. Great video.

I have inherited my daughters turtle who is a little guy. I feed him every other or third day and on the second day of no feeding I give him a small amount of lettuce. Is this OK. I feed him dried shrimp and these green turtle dried little stringy things. I am not sure exactly what kind of turtle he is however he was purchased at the boardwalk at Daytona Beech four years ago.

Thanks Maria! An adult turtle is one that is a) sexually mature and b) no longer growing physically. Typically they become sexually mature pretty early, I want to say around a year, but don't quote me since that is off of the top of my head! Usually, they stop growing anywhere between 1 1/2 years and 3 years. But certain species grow slower than others etc.
Natural sunlight is always best. I take mine out for 45mins a few times a week. I started this when I first got him since I didn't have the lights in his tank just yet. But now I still do it cause I feel it's healthy.

Okay, I rescued a red eared slider and have been feeding her daily, once a day because she's a year old. After watching your video and with all the research I've been doing, I believe I'm feeding her too much. Do I just slowly back off feeding her, so she's used to being fed every other day instead of every day. She's healthy and gets a variety of food, but her previous owner didn't take very good care of her and I fed her daily and made sure she got plenty of UVA/UVB light because she had the starting of shell rot. She's doing better, but I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right for her. She's about 14 months, she'd be considered a juvenile, right?

How do I know when they reach “mature” age and I can start feeding them every 3 days? My turtles’ shells are about 4 inches long, and the previous owner said they are 4 years old.
I would say that is mature :) it's really based on your own observations of growth and how much they seem to be eating. And keep in mind you can also feed veggies to offer on the "days off"
Hi guys 🙌🙌 I recently bought a red eared slider and I read that we are supposed to feed baby sliders food everyday but also to be careful not to overfeed (protein/calories) them as that can lead to pyramiding of the shell or turtle obesity. I am currently feeding him pellets (OF TT-G1 pro and Saki-Hikari turtle food about size of his head as advised from the web/TH-cam) every other day and unlimited vegetables (as advised by some TH-camr) - rotating between mustard greens, green leaves lettuce, and endives, and carrot and cuttlefish bone (once a week supplementary for vit A and calcium)- on non-pellet days. I know that baby sliders need protein as they are still growing rapidly and I'm wondering if feeding vegetables would suffice it's dietary needs. My slider's stool is watery from the vegetables consumption and I think it's from the overconsumption of leafy vegetables. Example of a week's feeding schedule Mon - Brand A Pellets and vegetables Tue - Vegetables Wed - Brand B Pellets and vegetables Thu - Vegetables and cuttlefish bone Fri - Brand A Pellets and vegetables Sat - Vegetables and carrot Sun - Brand B Pellets and vegetables Do advised as I'm not sure if this is the right way to go about feeding a baby slider. 🙇🙇
Hi, hope your turtle is doing well. About how big is it now? I find my baby turtle does best with pellets daily, and a few treat mealworms or shrimps occasionally. Baby turtles are normally more carnivorous so it’s okay if that’s what they prefer. You can still offer veggies. Hope this helps!

Then, every few days i add turtle dried shrimp treats mixed in with the pellets... My turtle seems to be very hungry so I am wondering if I am feeding it too much? I am feeding twice a day a total of 26 pellets 13 in morning and then 12 hours later at night another 13 and he eats all of them within 3 minutes is what the directions say on container.. Hey Jake! Typically, most turtles won't actually eat after your first get them. This is simply because they are stressed from the change of environment. I would give it two weeks before your start worrying, they can go quite long without eating. Once they realize there is nothing to be afraid of, they'll be constantly begging ;)
What do turtles do in the wild? Do they eat every other day and do they only eat the amount you recommend? Or, because they have an abundance of area to swim/ travel would they be okay eating daily? There are automatic feeders, put a battery in the unit and it will dispense food very 12/24 hours. It depends on the type and model, some models may have more options on how and when to feed.
We are apparently feeding our YBS juvenile to much protein because his shell is majorly the shape of a pyramid😕. So, we will feed him less, will that also help in the pyramid shape or is the damage done and it is permanent?

Bruno’s Exotics well to entertain them, you can put textured gravel substrate in your tank because turtles LOVE to dig. Thats one minor tip, but hope you found this helpful😊

Congratulations! I would have whoever is taking care of the turtle come over maybe every two to three days to feed, and maybe change water once a week if you're ok with them doing that.

That's okay! Baby turtles are normally reluctant to eat in the beginning because they've been moved to an unfamiliar environment. Try feeding it one or two tiny shrimp or pellets a day. If they don't eat it, just take the shrimp out and try again the next day. Eventually they'll gain an appetite and finally eat! :)

How long have you had them? In my limited experience, baby turtles grow pretty gradually. If it's a hatchling, just feed every day. You can give occasional treats of live fish or dried shrimp or things of the sort, but a staple diet of pellets is typically just fine!

Sooo... I have a yellow belly slider, her shell is 6" in length her age is unknown. Would it make sence to feed her veggies daily and reptomin pellets 3x a week? The pellet directions say you should feed 2x a day? I'm sooo confused 😩. I did change her off of the "growth formula" which seemed to cause her to start pyramiding. 😬 any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I want my turtle to be healthy.

My painted turtle that I abducted from the lake a few days ago is a guestimated three weeks old. I pick out the smallest mealworms from the container and feed him one mealworm for breakfast, one for lunch, and one right before bed. I leave the biggest mealworms in the bin to, ya know, do their thang and make more mealworms. Yay for mealworm breeding! (He also gets some fruit and veggies when I succumb to his begging)

So im getting a baby turtle and we are keeping some live plants. If my turtle is eating plants should i be feeding them less or keep the same amount of pellets/ shrimp/worms or whatever theyre eating ?
for adults, could you just feed them daily but at 1/3 the amount you would feed according to your system? if you divided the feeding by the amount of days it's the same quantity of food, but in intervals. will that keep them healthy?
So... I've had my baby turtle (RES) for almost a whole year now... and I'm pretty sure turtles are supposed to grow a little bigger after a year, but my turtle hasn't grown. I sometimes feed her pellets and some turtle diet food or whatever, and I've been feeding her some dried up baby shrimp and krill. What do I need to feed her in order for her to grow?? I know she needs more protein, for sure, but what are the best foods for turtles with protein????

I feel prepared after watching yours and some other TH-camrs videos. So I was wandering if being on vacation for a week still applies for hatchlings or younger turtles? You said that you have left for a week before but would that still apply for my baby Musk? Hey Sofia! That schedule looks perfect for a baby. Also i wouldn't worry if your baby doesn't eat the lettuce, since they sometimes won't eat it as hatchlings. if you could get someone to come over halfway through the week to check on the turtle and feed him, that would be best....adults would be fine, but with a baby i wouldn't want to leave them unattended for that long.
Ha I started measuring Rufus food by the size of his head, because I didn't want him to get fat. Yeah his legs are starting to pour out of his shell like a loaf of bread out of a baking pan. What a coincidence. Rufus is a tiny baby snapping turtle. Great video.

When you're doing your vid your turtle looks so happy going about its business. Haha My little girl would be stuck at the front of the tank casing me in case I'm ready to feed her. It makes me feel so guilty! I hope I'm not overfeeding her. She gets a lot out of me!
Hiya, we bought our red ear slider when he was very young and tiny. We’ve had him for 2 months (in about a week) and he’s growing really really quick!! He seems to want to eat ALL the time. We feed him about 20 tiny pieces of food 3 times a day but after watching this I think it’s too much? Would appreciate any advice!!
I have inherited my daughters turtle who is a little guy. I feed him every other or third day and on the second day of no feeding I give him a small amount of lettuce. Is this OK. Thanks Maria! An adult turtle is one that is a) sexually mature and b) no longer growing physically. Typically they become sexually mature pretty early, I want to say around a year, but don't quote me since that is off of the top of my head! Usually, they stop growing anywhere between 1 1/2 years and 3 years. But certain species grow slower than others etc.
Hi. Can you please tell me if I can take my turtle out of her tank everyday to put her outside where she can get sunlight.
Natural sunlight is always best. I take mine out for 45mins a few times a week. I started this when I first got him since I didn't have the lights in his tank just yet. But now I still do it cause I feel it's healthy.
Ik im l8 but just fyi its always best to do so, In summer I take the entire tub outside for it to absorb sunlight

Okay, I rescued a red eared slider and have been feeding her daily, once a day because she's a year old. After watching your video and with all the research I've been doing, I believe I'm feeding her too much. Do I just slowly back off feeding her, so she's used to being fed every other day instead of every day. She's healthy and gets a variety of food, but her previous owner didn't take very good care of her and I fed her daily and made sure she got plenty of UVA/UVB light because she had the starting of shell rot. She's doing better, but I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right for her. She's about 14 months, she'd be considered a juvenile, right?

I have a red eared slider who is 3 years old. He is very small in size for his age (idk why) . I feed him turtle food which comes in the form of sticks. I feed him 3 times a day ( about 6-7 sticks each time) . He keeps eating as much as I keep giving, and always begs.
Am I overfeeding him??
Cause lately I have noticed he has started to put on a lot of weight. We keep him in a box ( made for turtles) and I rearly take him out( like once in 3-4 days).

How do I know when they reach “mature” age and I can start feeding them every 3 days? My turtles’ shells are about 4 inches long, and the previous owner said they are 4 years old.
I would say that is mature :) it's really based on your own observations of growth and how much they seem to be eating. And keep in mind you can also feed veggies to offer on the "days off"
What about greens? Do you just feed pellets?

I recently bought a red eared slider and I read that we are supposed to feed baby sliders food everyday but also to be careful not to overfeed (protein/calories) them as that can lead to pyramiding of the shell or turtle obesity.
I am currently feeding him pellets (OF TT-G1 pro and Saki-Hikari turtle food about size of his head as advised from the web/TH-cam) every other day and unlimited vegetables (as advised by some TH-camr) - rotating between mustard greens, green leaves lettuce, and endives, and carrot and cuttlefish bone (once a week supplementary for vit A and calcium)- on non-pellet days.
I know that baby sliders need protein as they are still growing rapidly and I'm wondering if feeding vegetables would suffice it's dietary needs.
My slider's stool is watery from the vegetables consumption and I think it's from the overconsumption of leafy vegetables.
Example of a week's feeding schedule
Mon - Brand A Pellets and vegetables
Tue - Vegetables
Wed - Brand B Pellets and vegetables
Thu - Vegetables and cuttlefish bone
Fri - Brand A Pellets and vegetables
Sat - Vegetables and carrot
Sun - Brand B Pellets and vegetables
Do advised as I'm not sure if this is the right way to go about feeding a baby slider. 🙇🙇
Hi, hope your turtle is doing well. About how big is it now? I find my baby turtle does best with pellets daily, and a few treat mealworms or shrimps occasionally. Baby turtles are normally more carnivorous so it’s okay if that’s what they prefer. You can still offer veggies. Hope this helps!

I'm looking into getting a mini dwarf red eared slider- because they're on the tiny side and I have limited space and I just think they're so adorable. Is a ten gallon tank big enough for one or two of these? And do you have any vids about mini dwarf red eared sliders? Hey Jake! Typically, most turtles won't actually eat after your first get them. This is simply because they are stressed from the change of environment. I would give it two weeks before your start worrying, they can go quite long without eating. Once they realize there is nothing to be afraid of, they'll be constantly begging ;)

Hey I got my turtle about three years ago and when I got her she was the size of a half a dollar really small. She's grown a lot probably the size of a note 9. Would she be considered a juvenile? Also I used to give her pellets but I tried to give her red dried shrimp and that's all she wants to eat. So I try giving her something else? Or is it okay to just stick to that?

There are automatic feeders, put a battery in the unit and it will dispense food very 12/24 hours. It depends on the type and model, some models may have more options on how and when to feed.
We are apparently feeding our YBS juvenile to much protein because his shell is majorly the shape of a pyramid😕. So, we will feed him less, will that also help in the pyramid shape or is the damage done and it is permanent?

Bruno’s Exotics well to entertain them, you can put textured gravel substrate in your tank because turtles LOVE to dig. Thats one minor tip, but hope you found this helpful😊

Congratulations! I would have whoever is taking care of the turtle come over maybe every two to three days to feed, and maybe change water once a week if you're ok with them doing that.

That's okay! Baby turtles are normally reluctant to eat in the beginning because they've been moved to an unfamiliar environment. Try feeding it one or two tiny shrimp or pellets a day. If they don't eat it, just take the shrimp out and try again the next day. Eventually they'll gain an appetite and finally eat! :)

Don't feed it salt water shrimps, only freshwater shrimps, you can feed it once a day but only a little

The lady (store) I bought it from seems to have given me very contradictory information. I also mix some of it’s food in a calcium/vitamin D powder that I put on his shelf. How long have you had them? In my limited experience, baby turtles grow pretty gradually. If it's a hatchling, just feed every day. You can give occasional treats of live fish or dried shrimp or things of the sort, but a staple diet of pellets is typically just fine!
Bloodworms and/or cut up earthworms make good treats as well.
