I took ur advice of feeding them separately and I'm so happy with the advice! Less frequent changing of water..less mess in my main tank! No bad smell from the rotting left overs in my main tank..thanks for all the tips!
I also feed all of my turtles outside of their tank in a seperate container and they get fed about 3 times a week. It takes more time than just throwing food in the tank, but it keeps all of the mess from being in the tank and also ensures that they each get the correct portion. Nice video!
The Turtle Girl do you recommend diamondback terrapins for beginners? I am trying to convince my mum to get me one. But I want to get all the facts before I ask Update: I asked my parents and they are is leaning towards it
Diamond Backs probably aren't the best for beginners mainly cause they "can" get pretty large and technically they aren't a fresh water turtle (tho they can be kept in fresh water) they are more likely to get bacteria infections etc in fresh water that a beginner might not be equiped to deal with... Lots of other attractive turtles would probably be a better choice.
My husband found a turtle on the highway last week, and he is now named Spike and living in a pool in our back yard! 😅 Our kids are in love! Your videos have been SO super helpful to us turtle novices! Thanks for all the great info!
I recently subbed to your channel and I'm so glad that I did. I have a painted turtle named Telly. I've had him for about eight years and I just had a scare with a scute that wasn't coming off properly. So after watching your videos I was encouraged to take him to the Vet where she told me that he is a very strong, healthy little guy. Thanks for all the information your videos provide.
Another cool advantage to feeding in a separate container is that you can make a small water change daily. Tiny water change lol take water from the tank, (because it's tempered and all set for turtle buddy) and then replace with fresh and conditioned water once done. You could just do new water also it's just a nice way to also do tiny water changes. Great video!! Glad I subbed!
Thank you Melanie, I'm getting a rescue Red eared slider on Saturday and I'm doing as much research as I possibly can, your water change idea when feeding is a great tip as I hope to feed her outside of her tank for cleanliness.
Elizabeth Trainer Hello Elizabeth! You're welcome lol Turtle Girl here has just about everything down so begin with her videos! Then expand your knowledge 😊 research specifically on RES (red eared sliders) turtles because each species is different. Good luck with your little one and have a fantastic day! Ps, also still do regular bigger water changes once a week or so cuz where turtles are concerned, you can never be too clean lol
Elizabeth Trainer you're quite welcome! And yea when I found her I binge watched lol as far as pet channels go, for my son and I its Turtle Girl, Emzotic, and Steff J. All three great people with a profound love of the little ones 🌸 so how excited are you to welcome your own little one lol I imagine 10/10! It's always exciting when you rescue a love deserving critter. I wish you the best of luck and blessings!
My turtle is so picky! He only eats lettuce when it's very crisp. He won't eat kale at all. He might eat baby spinach, but only when he's hungry enough. I have to do veggie days where he doesn't get pellets or else he won't it veggies at all. We bought a variety pack of pellets and he only will eat one kind. Like, he spits out pellets he doesn't like. he loves blueberries to eat. He doesn't eat raspberries but he has a fantastic time playing with them.
I know this was a while ago but I am getting (2) painted turtles on my birthday (June 29th) and this is the first time having turtles so I want to learn as much as I can
Hi I need help. My family and I recently found a baby red eared slider in our crawfish bag and we’re deciding to keep it. It’s been two days he doesn’t eat, and I’m trying to found foods that are best for him. Any chance you can help? Thanks. And you have any other info on red eared sliders that would be awesome!
I have two hatchling Red Eared Sliders. I have zoo med hatchling formula and romane lettuce. How much should I give them each? I NEED this info please.
Do they make any food that time release like if you were going on vacation and if your going to live feed should you only put amount of worms minnows snails etc you want him to eat or alot to let him hunt over time
Yes, I do believe they sell some food dispensers made specifically for turtles, but you can also use ones made for fish and it works about the same (just make sure that your pellet isn't bigger than the dispenser opening). I don't think they have vacation feeder blocks of food that you leave in the tank though. For live, I would probably do something like guppies and make sure there are good hiding places and let him live off of the surviving colony...also the same with shrimp and snails. Just make sure you have hiding places or it won't work.
Thanks, got a common snapper arriving tommarrow, tank all set up, had not considered feeding in seperate container to keep tank clean this is a great idea!
I started wtaching your videos today and i am a huge fan already! My parents finally told me that they would buy me a turtle if i took care of it so your account helped me A LOTTTTTTTT (sorry if this text grammatically doesn't make sense English isn't my first language
Hey! So this is late but I would suggest a painted turtle instead! Musk turtles are more agreesive compared to painted turtles and they are better swimmers too!
Sorry for asking, but on the google sheet you linked in the description for safe vegetables for turtles, it says to see notation, but some of them don't have the text that pops up when you hover your mouse over the selected slot. Do you know what it refer to when it says see notation? Thanks
Hi! I’m pretty late in the game since I was younger when I had my turtle. She has pyramiding and some scutes that did not grow in properly. For an 11 year old turtle what diet do you recommend? She will not eat anything but protein. Is it true you should cut back when they are older? I have tried vegetables and she will not eat them. Also what do you recommend for proper shedding? She is not shedding in a healthy way and her scutes shed in little pieces vs the whole scute. Thank you again! Just discovering your page and I love it!
I have turtles too but for some reason, they don’t like eating pellets or maybe it’s just that it’s winter and they’re hibernating. Do turtles hibernate??
Hi just got a RES - if I feed him in a separate container with fresh water will he be ok in that container without any water conditioner? Where I’m from we add water conditioner to his tank or his eyes get irritated
Question ❓ I have 2 rescued turtles. One is a male that will only eat dried mealworms and lettuce. Is this a sufficient source of vitamins and nutrients for the turtle? I also added a cuttlebone but the other turtle is the only one interested in it when it decides to nibble. So my man is concerned that the newest wild turtle is not getting enough calcium in its diet. His shell looks terrible to me what should I do?
I'm currently using zoomed, but I also love Mazuri for all my small animals. My turtles, mice and birds eat it. Not sponsored either but I wish I was lol.
Question.... my turtle has been biting the rubber off the corners and bottom of his tank...then throws up a while later all his food... any ideas how to stop that...
Thank you for making this video. It answered a few questions I had. I just got a baby stink pot musk turtle. I wasn't sure if it was ok that I was taking it out to feed it, but I wanted to make sure I monitored that it was eating well. It's only about an inch long and so cute!!! I love your turtles!!! They are very pretty colors 😍. If you have any suggestions for me please let me know. I love your channel!!!!!!!!!!
A staple pellet of zoo med hatchling or omega one hatchling, maybe some reptomin. An earthworm or cricket a week would be nice too :) Usually the hatchlings won't take to veggies until later, but you can try!
Awesome video. New subscriber since I saw you on Emzotixs live. I don't own turtles but I like watching pet videos, so here I am. I think your turtles look adorable btw.
Yes, but as it was discussed in the video, they do appreciate some variety, be it the occasional earthworm or even a different brand of pellet. Also, sorry I haven't gotten back to your insta message. I can't check those as easily (or reply to them as easy) as email. So if you want to shoot me the questions again through email, that would be great :)
PepeTheFrog next time please start your own comment instead of hijacking mine. Especially since I don't want all the replies to something I just don't care about. Thank you
Thank you so much for your videos, I will watch them again and again. I Love turtles, and just bought my first baby's . Im going to watch the feeding again. Mine would only eat blood worms, so I will buy other choice foods for them.
I have a juvenile red eared turtle and I always feed him 3 times a day; 3 pellets in the morning, 3 pellets in the afternoon and 3 pellets in the night every day, it’s that okay??
Hey Turtle I have a question, I have a baby RES he's about two months old. I'm still getting the hang of setting up his tank. His shell has this white film on it jst wanted to know if was shell rot or just him being in the water to much. Is there away I could send u a pic.
Hi my turtle just got him yesterday but when I fed him some reptile sticks for turtles from zoo med and some other circular pellets he just breaks them and leaves it does he eat it or do I feed him something else or do something
Rescued a turtle a few weeks ago, she ate one pellet when I first got her but wouldn't eat more, figured she was just adjusting, still hasn't touched anything, I was holding back on the mealworms and things like that, but I gave in, she finally ate about 4 as I was worried, temp is okay, got her uvb and heat bulb, water is high 70s, do you think she doesn't like the zoo med pellets, or is there something wrong with her.
My turtles old owners used to just feed reptomin floating food sticks and he never had a heater light and filter he lived their for 6 years but he lives with me now and he’s super happy he loves me and he loves everything about his tank I got him a light filter heater those like tank pebbles and I sometimes feed him red shrimp for fish and turtles I only feed it to him on Friday cause he crazy like that 😂 and I feed sometimes feed him reptomin food sticks and I normally feed him zoomed pebbles I also feed him his veggies and pizza jk I give him five red shrimps on Friday and food sticks 5 and pebbles 5
I have a red eared slider and im debating to get a 50 gallon or a 75 gallon he is only three inched but i wanna save money so i don' have to buy another tank could you help me out?
in my country the turtles arent popular so i have to make his food and tank on my own like there are no basking areas in here i made it myself and i feed my turtle kilka fish he loves it
I would say between 6 months to a year - 1 1/2 is a juvie, and from then on, it's an adult. A 30 would make a decent size, but if you could do a 40 breedertank it would be better.
i am soooo close to buying a turtle.... so close, really want a few little musk turtles, but i need another tank cuz they arent going in any of my planted tanks haha
my 55 will probably end up being a sump/ turtle tank when i get a 120-225g if all goes well, but im gonna get the set up before the animal, gotta be responsible and stuff, u know like staying up all night to watch youtube videos about turtles haha probably gonna be a summer project :P
I'm new here and I have a new turtle and I don't know what kind of turtle it is so I don't know what to feed it or what environment to keep it in im really stuck
I feed my hatchlings 2 times a day morning and night, is that okay? i don't give them a lot. is that still okay? Also, how do I get my turtles to eat in a separate container, all they do is look stressed and trying to escape. Also, can I feed them thawed frozen shrimp and tilapia (the one that humans eat too)?, because I don't like giving them only pellets. I have given them kale and they liked it but I haven't done it in a long time, also they liked eating carrots as well but I haven't given that in a long time too.
*For updates on my turtles (and other pets!) check out my Instagram **_@theturtlegirl_** !* instagram.com/theturtlegirl

I have a question: is the weather bill very high when you have a turtle?

I took ur advice of feeding them separately and I'm so happy with the advice! Less frequent changing of water..less mess in my main tank! No bad smell from the rotting left overs in my main tank..thanks for all the tips!

Yeah, that's definitely why I feed in a separate container. And it pays off later because you don't have to clean the tank and filter as often.
That turtle in the eat your veggies photo is absolutely gorgeous! What type is is?
He is a diamondback terrapin turtle :)
The Turtle Girl do you recommend diamondback terrapins for beginners? I am trying to convince my mum to get me one. But I want to get all the facts before I ask

What turtle would you recommend
Painted Turtles or Sliders. Preferably males (they stay smaller) check around your area for rescues sometimes you can find them for adoption.
My husband found a turtle on the highway last week, and he is now named Spike and living in a pool in our back yard! 😅 Our kids are in love! Your videos have been SO super helpful to us turtle novices! Thanks for all the great info!
I'm so glad you've found them helpful. :)
I do in tank feedings and they never miss a thing, LOL..
LOL yeah, they usually have pretty good senses of where food is haha
Thank you so much, I learnt a lot especially about taking the turtle out of the tank to feed it. Very smart idea

I just got my son a spiny softshell turtle for Christmas. Thank you for sharing your tips

Definitely! Always happy to do small water changes, its much easier than lugging 5 gallon buckets around ;)

My turtle loves to do tricks off his sun ramp for his treats. His favorite is the belly slide
My turtle is so picky! He only eats lettuce when it's very crisp. He won't eat kale at all. He might eat baby spinach, but only when he's hungry enough. Question- how do you get your turtle out of the tank? Like how do you move them to the container to eat?
She picks them up and puts them in
This was very informational and helpful! Thanks for making a video on the subject that really breaks it down!
How long should u leave ur turtle in the separate container before putting him back in the tank?
as long as they need to eat...typically for mine about 15 min
Thanks, got a common snapper arriving tommarrow, tank all set up, had not considered feeding in seperate container to keep tank clean this is a great idea!
This helped a ton. I sort of knew a few of these things but it was good to hear some confirmation.
Happy to hear it :) Thanks for watching Taylor!
Excellent video!!
Happy to hear it! Thanks Jenny!
Hey my turtle was a wild pond turtle and I don't have any pellets but I have earthworms and other living food

I have turtles too but for some reason, they don’t like eating pellets or maybe it’s just that it’s winter and they’re hibernating. Do turtles hibernate??
Yes they hibernate
I love your videos.! Glad I came across them. Very helpful video!!
Your videos have been very informative tools. Thank you
My turtle is 6 years old, does she need to eat every third day? And is that cup as big as her head a mix of veggies, pallets and fish?
I really hope to get a turtle next week, i’m looking at one at the shelter! Your videos have really helped me out!
That's super awesome!!!! Adoption is a really great way to get a turtle

I just love your videos. They are so helpful b/c I have no clue how to take care of my daughter's turtle that she rescued.

What foods do you recommend for a southern painted (hatchling)? Can you feed it fruits and veggies?

how do you determine if the turtle is a hatchling juvanile or an adult. for a reeve turtle
Awesome video. New subscriber since I saw you on Emzotixs live. I don't own turtles but I like watching pet videos, so here I am. I think your turtles look adorable btw.
Thank you so much! Glad you could find me :)
The Turtle Girl I have an albino red ear, I just feed it red ear slider food. This is ok right?
Yes, but as it was discussed in the video, they do appreciate some variety, be it the occasional earthworm or even a different brand of pellet. Also, sorry I haven't gotten back to your insta message. I can't check those as easily (or reply to them as easy) as email. So if you want to shoot me the questions again through email, that would be great :)

The Turtle Girl what is your email?
Hi.. I have a coin sized baby red ear slider . She is very active but the underneath shell skin is shredding n becoming soft. What to do ?
Thank you so much for your videos, I will watch them again and again. I Love turtles, and just bought my first baby's . Im going to watch the feeding again. Mine would only eat blood worms, so I will buy other choice foods for them.
Glad they could help you! :)
I have a juvenile red eared turtle and I always feed him 3 times a day; 3 pellets in the morning, 3 pellets in the afternoon and 3 pellets in the night every day, it’s that okay??
Some brands in Singapore are expensive. Is there any cheaper areas?

thanks so much for all of the great information! when you say baby vs juvenile vs adult - what age ranges are you talking about?

Thankyou turtle girl, you changed my life
Where do you get water to the separate feeding area from? From the aquarium?
in my country the turtles arent popular so i have to make his food and tank on my own like there are no basking areas in here i made it myself and i feed my turtle kilka fish he loves it
That actually sounds like fun!!!
These vids help me a lot with my little red eared slider, Ahmad. You just earned another sub
Hi friend!!! Could you please make a video suggesting homemade concoctions to feed my turtle? I want to spoil her and feed her the best
Hoku’s head kinda looks like the inside of a dragon fruit
Now that u mentioned it..ya...n here I am ...cutting a Dragon fruit for a fruit salad...omg..
I've been giving my res flukers blend of pellets, shrimp and mealworms. Should I switch to the aqua pellets?
My baby yellow belly slider turtles only eat non veg. Blood worms n fish n chicken sometime. I want them to eat pellets as well. Any suggestions
So when you feed,do you put a little water in a bucket and then put the turtle and it’s food in then let it finish and put it back in it’s home?
Nevermind😂
Love the content straight to the point ! 💁🏽♀️
Do you condition that water inside the feeding box? Or are they ok in tap water if it’s just during feeding?
how finely chopped does romaine lettuce need to be for an adult red ear slider to eat it floating in the tank?
hmmm....their jaws are usually strong enough to rip it...so I don't know that it matters all that much
I have a question..at what age is the turtle consider a juvenile, adult ? And question 2 is a 30gal tank good for 1 Razorback musk turtle ?
I would say between 6 months to a year - 1 1/2 is a juvie, and from then on, it's an adult. A 30 would make a decent size, but if you could do a 40 breedertank it would be better.
A 30 gallon tank is a mansion for musk turtles. That's huge. You gonna do fine with a tank that big.
i am soooo close to buying a turtle.... so close, really want a few little musk turtles, but i need another tank cuz they arent going in any of my planted tanks haha
Ha, you could always try in a planted tank then if it doesn't work out, get another tank ;)
my 55 will probably end up being a sump/ turtle tank when i get a 120-225g if all goes well, but im gonna get the set up before the animal, gotta be responsible and stuff, u know like staying up all night to watch youtube videos about turtles haha probably gonna be a summer project :P
I totally get that. The reason I know so much about turtles is because of too much research LOL It is never a bad thing.
My new baby turtles previous owner only gave theme carrot juice.. How can i get them eat pellets?
Are my turtles able to have wardleys pond pellets or no?
Thank you. Just got two red ear sliders. Want to take care of them the best I can. Love em already.
awesome! glad I could help :D
OMG you are so cute the smile at 0.43 the way you said turtle at 0.50
DO the food pellets have expiry date?

I'm new here and I have a new turtle and I don't know what kind of turtle it is so I don't know what to feed it or what environment to keep it in im really stuck
Thank you for the help
I feed my hatchlings 2 times a day morning and night, is that okay? i don't give them a lot. is that still okay?
Also, how do I get my turtles to eat in a separate container, all they do is look stressed and trying to escape. Also, can I feed them thawed frozen shrimp and tilapia (the one that humans eat too)?, because I don't like giving them only pellets. I have given them kale and they liked it but I haven't done it in a long time, also they liked eating carrots as well but I haven't given that in a long time too.
Frozen turtle food is also solid and not as processed. Especially, the Omega One brand.
I have baby turtles would zoo med hatchiling formula natural aquatic turtle food work or just feed it pebbles?
Pebbles? Zoo med hatchling is good, I would definitely get them on some sort of formulated turtle pellet.
