PLEASE READ IF YOU'RE CONSIDERING GETTING A TURTLE: Just wanted to say I no longer recommend using aquarium sand in turtle setups. The turtle can consume it and it can cause some serious problems. If you want to use sand, use very fine grain sand or play sand. But it's best to use rocks or pebbles that are large enough to where the turtle can't consume them.
Larenzia Hunter there’s not much to it really. But the aquarium size does matter depending on the size of your turtle. Lets say the turtle is 4 inches, he’s gonna need a 40 gallon tank. U could always just get a tub instead like he did in the video. And like he said, use rocks that are big enough so that they wont consume them instead of sand. A good filter is super important because red eared sliders STINK SO BAD and their water gets dirty SUPER fast.
Larenzia Hunter oh and also my turtles ALWAYS knock down the plants and they always move the big rocks i have for them to bask on so keep that in mind when decorating...it wont last lol
@@MAAZ_Music whenever i saw mine he would bask while his legs and head were tucked inside. He would bask to dry his feet and head but then tuck them in
I really enjoyed this video! A great project to set up with my children and their new turtle. A great space for them to observe and play with her! Thanks for the update about sand to pebbles/rocks!
I was also about to mention that when you first put the rock in it was slightly underwater and there needs to be none on it so his belly can fully dry but I realized how small he was on that rock hahah. You seem like a good turtle dad!! Good luck w your little one
I love the setup. The filter and heater need good water flow around them. So it's best not to block them with stones. You can purchase heater covers that prevent turtles from sitting directly on the heater. Or you can purchase a heater specifically made for turtles that comes with a plastic sort of cage around it. Also, the heater should be fully submerged. Once your turtle starts to grow he'll need a better filter. He's adorable and I'm glad you have him there with you.
I know people use water bottles for filter baffles, could something be similarly done for a heater? Im not sure if that would be good for the plastic or not, just a random idea that came to mind.

Getting some turtles for my kids. Actually a friend is giving me her 2 turtles. I'm not sure what kind they are or what she has in the tank. I do know there's water in the tank lol. What are your suggestions to get based on need for them for the cage. Thanks, these will be a first for me and I really don't know to much about them. I will be reading up on them asap
They will need a two-part lamp with one heat bulb & one UVB bulb. The general rule is 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle, for example a 2 inch turtle needs at least 20 gallons. they need a dry spot they can go to bask. i recommend getting a water heater to keep the water around 78 degrees. i feed mine like 4 pellets & some dried shrimp every day, & every couple days i give him a piece of lettuce. hope this helps & good luck with your turtles!
Get a plastic heater guard, it can melt your pond and cause severe burns. I mean deadly burns, they get red hot. The heater guard is way safer... And always Rinse sand thoroughly.
Thanks so much for posting this video. We inherited an adult red eared slider turtle and didn’t know where to begin on making her a safe new home. You’re video really helps. Oh and thanks for the follow up tip on the sand. Great job!!!

About adding fish/another turtle: 10/10 would not recommend as a long term plan. Any fish you put in are likely to get chased or eaten by Sheldon. Even if he never catches them, being trapped in an enclosure with a predator will cause stress and make them more likely to get sick. The only time I've heard of someone successfully cohabitating a turtle with fish was with African cichlids (apparently they're smart and fast enough to stay alive, they're also generally fairly stress hardy). Turtles are not social and get very territorial with age. If you get more turtles than you are committing to an extremely large enclosure to keep everyone happy. Depending on species/personalities of the turtles you may not be able to keep them together and have to seperate them for their safety. Even at a young age it's important to monitor basking usage and feeding times to make sure resources are being shared and one turtle isn't outcompeting the other.
Looks great!! Wonderful setup. My little guy Sid is in a 10 gallon aquarium with a minnow and one feeder fish (Goldfish).....he has not ate them yet, haha. I've always had fish but having a turtle is something new for us. The white sand is really pretty. I am wondering if there is an advantage over using sand vs natural pebble rocks? Thanks for your videos 🐢
Hi! There's not really an advantage for using sand I'd actually say it's more annoying. Cause it's harder to clean, clouds the tank easily and you have to disturb it ever so often so methane pockets don't build up. So it's really up to you and if you think the extra work for sand is worth it. I'd heavily recommend a bigger tank though. A 10 gallons might be okay at first for a turtle and a minnow but that turtle will eventually get way to big (up to 12 inches for a female red slider) and might even get stunted which isn't very good for them. It's usually recommend for a turtle to have 10 gallons per inch of the turtles shell. A 10 gallon is also to small for a goldfish. Since they're a type of carp they can grow very large. I understand if you don't want to take by advice cause I'm just a random person on the internet. But please at least look it up a little bit and you'll find many things about it. There's whole forums dedicated to animals like fish such as the website fishlore. And informative channels such as Aquarium Co-Op and Turtle Girl. Hope I don't sound rude. As a fellow turtle and fish lover/owner I just want the best for them.
Thank you for this idea, I have a turtle and he's getting bigger, I havent been able to find a big enough tank that's not super expensive. This is cheap but looks good, thank you!!

I am thinking about getting a yellow belly slider and I can’t find the information for how much food I should give them. Could you help me out? Also what kind of turtle is Sheldon and what brand mealworms did you feed him?
