    The ConEd transmission/distribution network in Manhattan is a "grid" system. So there are multiple feeds for each area. Shutting off the power for an area would involving taking much of the entire system down. When ConEd arrives they have a map so they can physically cut the burning feeder cable at both the source and the load ends, and then replace it.

      They're definitely there. Perhaps they're made of spun Kevlar (like Chris Costa's beard 😜) and provide additional ballistic protection.
      The more prosaic (but far less entertaining) reason I can think of is that NYPD uniform regulations for "portables" don't leave much room for an individual touch, and the eyelashes (not being covered by the regs) are her way of standing out.

    The water on the electric arcs in that manhole must have been decomposed into hydrogen and oxygen by the energy of these arcs, and that went off!

      @THEMAJESTIRIUM1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, THANKS SO MUCH TOM.....

    • @EyebrowsMahoney
      @EyebrowsMahoney 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      More likely it was a "smoke explosion". - It's not really always an explosion but a "deflagration". While it's possible the hydrogen concentration was incorrect - and caused a deflagration, it's really unlikely in my opinion because the arc must be submerged in the water for quite some time, and even so the arc would produce insignificant amounts of hydrogen - hardly getting the service tunnel filled with enough hydrogen to ignite.
      By suffocating the fire with the water- smoke built up, but the electrical arcs continued to generate intense heat. At some point - the smoke gets to a point called the lower explosive/flammable limit at which an explosive/flammable atmosphere is formed. As the heat continues to rise - deprived of oxygen - the smoke will build as the fire smoulders and eventually will reach its flashpoint - the point at which ignition naturally occurs, and the smoke will then deflagrate or even explode. I could be wrong but this seems the most likely to me.

  • @williamblevins6410
    @williamblevins6410 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    We have those fairly frequently in San Francisco - they have developed some specialized equipment for it. They have several trucks that have equipment to seal off the manholes and then they pump CO2 down there under pressure from 2 to 4 manholes to put the fire out. With CO2 there is no danger of there being a short circuit.

    I was a butcher at a market very close to there when the same thing happened about seven or eight years ago. The store lost it's power for a few days. The amount of food we had to throw out was crazy. First thing to go was anything dairy. It's apparently the law that certain food items have to be thrown out regardless of the duration of the power failure. I still remember the explosion that took place under the street. The manhole cover was blown a few feet away. We thought a bomb went off.

      Just so you sound more informed. Whenever you see the red “emergency” truck pull up? Call it what the ConEd guys call it. “Red Wagon”. Or “The Red Wagon”. Not emergency truck. Your videos are very professional & thorough. I want your videos to sound more professional by calling apparatus the correct name.
      If you see a truck with a large tank on it? They call that a “Flush Truck”. The work closely with the Red Wagon guys. All emergency people are referred to as Number 9. So when you see folks arrive on scene? Call them Number 9. That’s what they are called. Like this “Number 9 is here” as they arrive. They won’t wear different clothing to signify that? It’s a given.
      The guys with the large reels of cable on their trucks. They are called “The Cable Gang”. I worked in Da Bronx from 1987 to 1990 in “The Cable Gang” out of Van Nest yard.
      I transferred out to Westchester Overhead because I didn’t want to spend my career working in Da Bronx. We work out of “bucket trucks”. Manhattan only has underground. They have a very small piece of overhead but they are covered by Da Bronx Overhead.

    So is it the homeless burning stuff in the subway is that why those manholes are burning or is there homeless people down in the sewer lines with the big old rats you guys got there I'm in Iowa in a small town so you never catch me living in the city and that's my opinion

      Electrical cables in the manholes. Manhattan doesn't have overhead electric or telephone wires. No telephone poles in Manhattan.

      Lmaooo write your congressman… because coned will NEVER go for that…. Trust me I’ve said it 1000 times … i work for em… and while I am not electric emergency (#9) the red trucks … I am gas emergency…they see it as too much of a liability… and for further Amusement…. The electric department has no “required response time”…. But the gas department does we have to be there in 30 min or less otherwise the emails start flying …. If we are over an hour the Public Service Commission gets involved…. So if you are a coned customer and are truly concerned … write the company (the company gets a huge hard on concerning safety) and the state petitioning that utility first responders get red lights and sirens … we train with the fdny and all fire departments and Ems and hazmat companies in our service territory and they all ask the same question about why we don’t have redlights and sirens …and all I can say is coned said NO
