The cats that would be most vulnerable early in life; more susceptible to sickness, less likely to be fed as kittens, maybe even being “abandoned” (they often need milk longer than other cats, so by the time most kittens would be separating naturally from their mothers the runts would still need them), slow development... this is the key thing that made them all perfect targets

I mean if you... I hesitate to say "watched" because even the theatre community mostly hates Cats, but if you like/enjoy the musical, then it's not a surprise. Honestly I thought it was pretty obvious since in the majority of the songs, the characters sing about cats having numerous lives, and that the Jellicle Ball is for the expressed purpose of a cat being chosen to be reborn-- since the old wives tale is that cats have nine lives.
i like that in that one it focused on the cult from the perspective of the leader/ new recruit aspect. this one focused more on how the rest of the cult influences the new recruit in supplication to the leader
I grew up hearing tales of the Jonestown in Guyana (My Parents are Guyanese) and I remember it shaking me down to the bones as a kid and this episode still reminds me of it. (PS the Kool-Aid Reference was a reference to the beverage Jim Jones used to commit his crime)
Frankly, this movie is almost nothing like the musical. For one thing the musical doesn't even follow the kidnapping of cats, the only kidnapped cat is Deuteronomy and thats only for one moment as Mistoffeles brings him back immediately
There's this dude, Sideways, who made a pretty interesting video called " Why the music in Cats is much more worse than you think" if anyone wants to check it out
What I despise is that he lumps the original Musical in with the movie saying that it was always intended to be about a cult. What a freaking hack. >:(

Little Theory (goes with this theory): How does the leader of the Jellicle cats have so many lives maybe because when they sacrifice the cat the Jellicle Cat leader gets there life as a extra one..... Edit: I didnt think my comment would get noticed
Honestly the only reason the line even exists is because casting OD as a woman meant the line about him having outlived 9 or 99 wives and having numerous progeny made no sense. So they lazily changed it to 99 lives. In the original they do say he’s lived many lives in succession, but it’s said as if he’s either been the jellicle choice himself many times or just had multiple lives as cats are said to, and the idea of a cat not remembering their past life is never mentioned.
Dude, this theory is still less scary than the actual movie. Edit: Fun fact, my dad and brother went to go see _The Lion King_ in theaters over the summer, and my brother was legitimately terrified by the _Cats_ previews.
We also use Hansel and Gretel to warn kids not to trust people (sometimes even parents) and the story of the tooth fairy to teach kids that that they aren't worthless (no matter how much they think they are)
something that personally scares me is that i know that im too emotionally vulnerable and gullible that i'd probably get looped into a cult without realising at some point in life

My understanding is that ALW wrote the musical as spectacle, a job for the costume and set designers; that the plot was always sorta dumb because he based it off those silly poems about cats by TS Eliot)?
@@johnncat2277 I wouldn't say it's a "storyline", but something that just happens. I was also going to say that it's not the first time Victoria goes into heat, but I'm not quite sure since I *think* she's supposed to be a kitten since she hangs out with Jemima, Ecetera, Electra, Tumblebrutus, Pouncival, etc. But then she's also shown interacting with the older cats, with some of the toms (Alonzo, Plato, and Quaxo/Mistoffolees) pursuing her.
@@cannibalisticrequiem Oh true, my friend told me it was her first time (but not sure of course), during that scene/song, where everyone's in a circle and she and another cat is in the middle and she gets lifted up?
Jennyanydots actually states why she wants the Jellicle Choice: "I cannot stay in this kitchen!" She says it a few times. My guess is that she has a strong commitment to the Jellicles but is a kitchen mouser shut in by her humans, and uses her many hobbies as a path for fulfillment, where she has no love from her humans.
I have never seen the movie, but that’s TERRIBLE if that’s the movie’s portrayal of Jennyanydots! In the musical she’s the sweet old lady cat who lounges around her house all day, sleeping. Then at night she helps the less fortunate (the mice and roaches). Definitely NOT somebody that’s supposed to be chasing mice in the kitchen and neglected by her humans.
I have nothing bad to say about this video, it's amazing and Matpat and the team did such a good job. What I hate is the "animation" they used for the Jellecles, it looks like someone hopped into SFM and decided to make a full length animated movie in 30 minutes then stopped the render half way through. I was one of those who really enjoyed "Cats" the Broadway Musical, but was laughed at for saying I enjoyed it when I was in High School. For that reason, I've been afraid to watch the movie because it got laughed at far beyond the original musical and i'm afraid my naturally eccentric mind would be in love with it. Then I watched this Film Theory on it and now i have to watch the dang movie bc that was EXACTLY why i loved the original Cats - the analogies! And, like, NO ONE around me got it. i just stayed silent and enjoyed it on my own. Happy you did a theory on it, to at least get the analogies out to those who wouldn't be able to enjoy the original musical. (admittedly, "eating cockroaches with human faces" does sound absolutely weird but now i'm frickin' curious Lol)
I watched Cats right after this theory because I've never seen it until now, and I gotta say, coming from a person that has been in a musical, it was actually pretty good. If you can get past the uncanny character designs (I thought old Detreuonomy's, Mungojerrie's, and Rumpleteaser's character designs were nice actually) and picture them as actual cats like the musical was suggesting (they reference several times that the humans playing the cats are supposed to be portrayed as normal cats because of things like room props being way bigger than the actors, simulating an average sized cat's perspective) it's actually really good. I liked the plot, the first song that was sung got me hooked and kept me wanting to watch more, and most of the other songs were also pretty good. I did laugh at some points at the dramatic dancing and cat like movements, but that again was to convey emotions to the viewer, that cats are elegant and proud of themselves, sleek and intelligent, agile, I think it was awesome that the actors protrayed that so well. I loved most of the actors shown, and they did amazing at their parts, I honestly might end up watching this again in the future, I was captivated by all the emotions shown through movement, and I Definently will be listening to MungoJerrie and Rumpleteaser's song for a while lol. If you haven't seen this I'd give it a chance at least. Like I said, you have to get past how the actors look, but if you do there's so much to enjoy and admire about this musical. It's not as perfected as other well known ones, but this one deserves a chance in my book💖
the movie completely destroyed the musical on many levels XD (fault of directors/maybe writers not actors) Have you watched the og cause its way better and makes way more sense (and still pretty cultist lol)
I too have just seen the movie (never saw the og musical though so I can't get offended for how it compares) and well, they're such good actors, dancers and singers that in the end I didn't mind their appearence, maybe because I spend way too much time observing my own cat being weird. Though I felt like some of the plot got lost, Macavity is mean just because he wants to... Well, some cats are *ss just because they can, so it's not that weird to have the evil guy being evil because he's a cat, but he felt kinda useless in the movie? That's quite common for movie adaptations to lack off from source material so I'm trying to keep that in mind and just enjoy the movie, and I'll give a try to the musical next and maybe enjoy it even more then.

Cats the musical: No basic story just a retelling of a children’s book where each song is about a different cat Cats the Movie: Fucked up story with some originality to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s original script.
The musical does have a story line but its just not rlly their main focus. The main focus is showing every cats life story showing how all cats are jelical and special, and i think thats why peoplr love the musical
I've been a huge fan of Cats since I was a kid, wearing out an old vhs of the live london cast recording. This makes so much sense I wonder if it was in Webbers' or Elliots mind whilst writing
I just thought I’d mention that the whole Jonestown thing has been super misrepresented, including in this video. MatPat addressed a quote that sums it up perfectly, but didn’t fully explain it. At the end of Jonestown, the cult members were FORCED to die. Everyone says “Oh they drank the Kool-Aid” when talking about people who blindly believe and follow, but that’s not what happened at Jonestown. Yes, they drank deadly Kool-Aid, but not willingly. Jones had his main followers first give the cyanide-infused Kool-Aid to the children. That way, the parents of those children would have less of a will to live. The reason he said “if you knew you’d be grateful” is because none of these people really wanted to die. And that’s the real tragedy. To learn more I would really recommend watching the documentary titled Jonestown. That’s where I learned the dark truth behind that thing we all say.
Cats, the musical, was actually a case study a professor had me write on cult indoctrination when I told him I enjoyed the musical. So I really enjoyed this video.
Therapist: "Nicholas Cage cat dosen't exist and it cant hurt you" Nicholas Cage Cat: 15:04 Edit: Hey 800 likes and a surprising amount of comments about my pfp. Thanks!
In the musical, the Cats aren’t competing for ascension. They’re just hanging out and talking about themselves and each other. Half the cats who sing about themselves in the movie are actually songs sung by other cats in the musical. The film was just attempting to give the musical a plot and look what happened lol
He also missed Grisabellas plot arc. She's ousted because she's old and can do longer dance and sing like she used to. She isn't beautiful anymore. Her ascending is giving her beauty and youth back to her. She does actually ascend in the musical too.
globetrotter while The Emoji Movie was undoubtedly an awful movie, Cats imo was an even bigger waste of time, especially since the actors had to sing etc.. I wouldn’t really call The Emoji Movie the worst movie ever, since there’s definitely way worse movies out there and just Animation in general that I hate way more.
I showed the original musical movie to my bf and he said "is this a cult? Oh my God it's actually a cult!" I mean, when it comes to the 1990s version, I guess I'm a member lol
Another interesting thing to consider is EVERY TIME that Victoria gets separated from the Jellicles (like in the beginning after the first song when she meets Macavity. She COULD HAVE run away, but Mr. Mistoffelees calls her back and brings her back to the other cats where the immediately go into the name song. Then again, when we see Macavity after Bustopher Jones' song....they see Macavity, the cats scatter....BOOM. Victoria is immediately picked up by the Calico twins and then rescued by Mistoffelees AGAIN and brought back to the other cats. The third time when Victoria is outside singing....Lady Deuteronomy watches her and then asks her to come back in AGAIN (even though Victoria confesses she is NOT a Jellicle) to watch her "make the Jellicle choice". And she even brings Lady D a new recruit in Grizabella. In the original version, Victoria IS here in this moment...but only AFTER Grizabella comes before Old Deuteronomy to sing Memory.
This is why I love Game/Film Theory turning basic, normal stuff into dark and twisted horrors.

As a person owned by a cat I have no problem with his. I'm serving her faithfully.
It's not as perfected as other well known ones, but this one deserves a chance in my book💖
the movie completely destroyed the musical on many levels XD (fault of directors/maybe writers not actors)
Have you watched the og cause its way better and makes way more sense (and still pretty cultist lol)

“In a Theater” Oh boy..... is it sad that this gave me sad nostalgia.
Jeez how sad... :( Thank you for explaining!
