    With all this unexpected free time on my hands, I've started rewatching some of my favorite shows. One of those is, of course, Community. Thanks, Netflix! Community is a show of many long running gags and hidden jokes, most of which were resolved by the end of the series. One of the biggest unsolved Easter Eggs of the whole show is the secret identity of the ACB - the You-Know-What Bandit. Who is this masked jokester? Is it the ever loveable Abed? Everyone's favorite Dean? Who can't we trust? Today I am putting on my detective hat ro nab this perp once and for all!

      Jagji56 it's getting brighter though, Donald Glover, who never wanted anything to do with Community since leaving, because he felt he needed to move on, decided to join the cast for a table read on zoom. He was on record saying he has gotten sentimental over the show now that he has kids. Maybe this, plus the show's newfound popularity might mean a movie is more likely than ever before.

    I like how you eliminated Pierce because he was in a wheelchair in season two, BUT NOT BECAUSE HE WAS DEAD IN THE EPISODE SURROUNDING THE ACB

    • @tedioussugar384
      @tedioussugar384 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1310

      Because Pierce’s death only was revealed with 5 minutes left on the show, of which he was unaccounted for in the rest of the episode, not to mention the rest of Season 5 before they bumped him off.
      But think about it. If he wasn’t in the wheelchair in Season 2, Pierce would be the perfect candidate for this kind of prank. He’s childish, offensive and immature, and would likely do this sort of prank for attention or out of spite, not to mention he would have the endurance to hold a grudge for long periods of time. Plus, his time at Greendale means he would know faster ways around the school through shortcuts, maybe even outpacing Abed on regular routes.

    • @jonahhoward5109
      @jonahhoward5109 4 ปีที่แล้ว +138

      Yeah, he used Annie's shortcut theory to say that Abed was the only one that could've done, which I think was actually a setup to the idea that there were multiple bandits striking within a short span of time around the school. It's a bit like Chekhov's gun, because without assuming that's what the scene meant, the ending where 'anyone can be a suspect' comes out of nowhere, as the intent of the episode was to make everyone a suspect, but it's never brought up anywhere else. Also, Abed would never do that to Troy, but he might've been under the bleachers, because the only two characters I can imagine having night vision goggles are Abed and Buzzhicky.

    My theory expands on yours: It was Abed from the beginning, and Annie actually figured it out on her own (hence the binder) but kept her solving it a secret so she could play detective with Jeff, using it both to spend more time with him and as an attempt to DTR. Then, she got carried away and teamed up with Abed to keep Jeff from solving it before she’d accomplished her goal, dragging the mystery along for her own ends.

      100% agree. It was heavily hinted in the episode that it could be multiple people- e.g., Annie took 20mins to hit all the spots of the previous 'cracking', yet a simpler explanation would be that there were multiple people who did it- Annie & Abed. Plus, the weird reaction she has in the final episode is a dead giveaway.

      I actually just posted a weird theory that started around that line.
      I think there might be something with episode air dates. Specifically around the 25th day of a month.
      Season 1 episode 2( 9/24/09) at 25 seconds the Dean announced that there's a homeless problem on campus.
      Season 1 episode 5(10/15/09) at 6:25 Jeff tells Britta that he gave a homeless guy a quarter the other day.
      Season 1 episode 8(11/05/09) at 10:00 Jeff tells Britta that in last 2 days he only spent a quarter.
      A cracking may take place on the 25th of every month a season airs through. So I need to check S1 E6(10/22/09) for a foreshadow. He might have meant a couple of days ago as in episodes.
      There's also the dorm across from abeds is 204. The door is weird as well, but Season 2 episode 4(204)(10/14/10) is the Caesar Rodney episode. E pluribus unum?
      The dellaware state quarter was released in 1999 the same year Heat Vision and Jack released. Its also the first quarter the ACB used.
      My fingers at Jeff, but Buddy and the cool Group are the real conspiracy.
      Throw away thoughts are Anglo-Saxon revenge, superbowl 25( the stadium was demolished in 1999), Name meanings. Additionally Jeff stands in front of a peace poster in the S2 E8. Jeffery means gods peace.
      He also knows pierce wears diapers

      I still don't really know how I feel about the idea that's it's Abed. It makes a lot of sense and all, but at the same time, through the entire show Abed uses manipulation to have the people around him do his bidding. Why would he actually do the cracking when he could potentially get caught?
      The parts where Annie seems to out herself could just be red herrings, or perhaps Abed was once again using manipulation to fulfil the homage. Rather than him actually doing the cracking, I wager he actually had the whole thing worked out with Annie, and the whole part about Annie and Jeff doing it to be close was actually an attempt to try and stop Jeff for digging deeper.

    • @DeepFriedOreoOffline
      @DeepFriedOreoOffline 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      However, the scene where Troy gets cracked, I believe Abed did that himself. One because Annie has a huge crush and wouldn't want to, and because Abed would have felt an obligation. In season 2 Troy reveals he has never really had any pain in life, it's also possible he was in on it, using the acting skills he learned in season 2 when he faked pain to get close to Britta. I mean, his whole thing in the episode is pretty ridiculous and similar to when he is doing something sarcastically.

    We should look at the victims. Ian Duncan who was cracked last, created a experiment in season 1 based around the Duncan Principle. Abed was the last one to leave, and he later said in the episode he was livid. Garrett, was a friend to Abed, so he could have been a mislead. However, he joined Troys during the pillow war, so Abed could cracked him in revenge and Garrett didn’t participate in any of Abed projects throughout the rest of the season. Troy, was definitely a mislead, but I’m not sure about Vicki.

    To back up your case about Abed being the ACB: it is confirmed that Abed himself doesn't like Jeff and Annie's romantic entanglement.
    In season 4 episode 1, History 101, we get a glimpse into Abed's 'happy place,' which is the idyllic TV show taking place inside his mind. In that 'perfect world,' Jeff and Britta kiss, not Jeff and Annie.
    Plus, later in season 4, we see a scene from the darkest timeline, where Annie gets released from the psych ward and Jeff says he wishes that him and Annie's age gap was bigger than it already was, which reveals that Abed is disgusted by their age gap.
    Additionally, in Virtual Systems Analysis in season 3, Abed gets mad at Annie for playing matchmaker with Troy and Britta because that would 'tamper with the fabric of the group' (granted, Abed had other, more personal reasons to be mad at Annie in this episode, but this was part of it.)
    Hence, Abed bringing up Jeff and Annie's relationship may have been genuine; he wants Jeff and Britta to be together, not Jeff and Annie, because Abed assigned Jeff and Britta the 'mom and dad' role early in the series. So that call was a chance for him to express his disdain for Jeff and Annie's relationship without receiving ridicule for doing so, while directing the blame toward Britta at the same time.

Part of the first movie is a breakdown of horror movie tropes by a film buff, and while he isn't one of the killers, it does fit with this as they are effectively playing out horror and mystery tropes in both. Going by your logic that he might not want to include anyone else on the prank, consider that girl's reactions that MatPat mentioned. While she may not have been the one doing the prank, there's no concrete evidence to suggest she wasn't in on the joke. This all makes sense, except Mat Pat doesn't acknowledge that the ACB could be multiple people. Shirly, writing the notes and can't help but mention God; Britta, sees how close Jeff and Annie are getting; Prof. Duncan, providing the quarters and access to the teacher's lounge; Annie, learns about the group working together but keeps it a secret (maybe being blackmailed by someone), therefore looking guilty when the ACB is mentioned again; Hickey, learned about Dave Mathews from Duncan and is therefore able to identify him later on in the show. It could be Abed, or maybe Abed is just pulling the strings on a massive conspiracy that keeps everyone on their toes.

This theory would explain Annie’s strange behavior despite other evidence not matching, she easily cracks under pressure (fake ID at the bar - Troy’s birthday) and would act strange when the topic comes up , maybe she had that notebook of evidence and articles because she was trying to determine who the other bandit(s) is. Abed could have joined in to add to the chaos and make it more movie-like. Duncan also acted weird so he could also be involved. Multiple people could be involved but they don’t know who the others are so they don’t coordinate with each other and could crack one another.

      Duncan never got cracked. He faked it to divert suspicion from himself. He’s the quintessential serial killer. Dissatisfied with his life and powerless, he needs the rush of cracking people to give himself purpose and the sense of control.

      We lost sight of Annie in the dance fog, she could have cracked Duncan then yelled, "there he goes!" As a distraction.

      Annie's motivation was spending time with Jeff. She's clever enough to pull it off and has access to the staff room as mentioned in season 2 episode 1 where she tells troy that the cleanest bathrooms are in the teachers lounge

    Nah, it was Annie. We know from their psych evals that Abed is the only non-psychopath. And once he saw how much Troy was hurt by the cracking, he would have fessed up. (Like when he stopped Troy from running into the cartoon tunnel). Annie is clearly a sociopath who often obsesses over perceived sleights (the pen) and takes things too far (breaking the Batman DVD).

    rule #1 in a murder mystery: EVERYONE is a suspect. even the victims. especially the victims

      ParanoeX In a murder mystery the victims would be dead, so maybe other kinds of mysteries like this one.

      What if there are multiple victims, is it the most recent one or were they murdered from beyond the grave? Scratch that, that would be a great mystery

      TH-camWatcher 9000 not to spoil anything, but in one specific and very famous Agatha Christie novel, the murderer DID end up being somebody who was an early victim who was just never dead in the first place so there is precedent for the victims to actually be suspects in murder mysteries

      @@TH-camWatcher9000 There are tons of movies where one of the victims was declared "dead" but later revealed to be the murderer to avoid suspicion!

      Luna van Kallen I guess so, but i was thinking more like they found the body and they are still the murderer, not just assumed to be dead. Are there any movies like that because if there are I’ve never seen it.

    I think they were all in it. Abed and troy started it but troy had to take one for the team bc always something up with those two (and the group overall, something the other students at greendale always point at)
    They all know but they got something from the bandit so they didn’t say anything, shirley got the money, britta gets something to write her paper on and annie gets to spend time with jeff (tho she def was the last to find out or maybe she finds out later but never says anything bc she can’t snitch on her friends).
    Jeff is the only one that never finds out and that’s why he’s the only one still intrigued
