I don't own a mk8 but own a mk7.5 and I test drove the N before I made my purchase. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes but for me the build quality of the VW was better and better materials inside and out. I also liked the VW's DSG 7 speed gearbox was just amazing. The 4 doors and the stealthyness of the VW won me over. Plus I got my GTI for $5000 less than the N. That was the icing on the cake for me. Both are great cars but as I'm getting older the GTI just seemed like the best car for me everyday.

I feel exactly the same about my 2019 Autobahn DSG. I saved 7 grand by buying a mint full warranty demo car with 4000 km on it. I'm 49 and it's a perfect daily driver. I'm so glad I didn't wait for the Mk8. I'll be tuning my GTI and put a new wheels and ps5 tires on it next month.

My friend's GTI got me excited about hot hatchbacks, and my Veloster N made me fall in love with them. Both are great cars, but I agree, the Veloster is just something special

Yep. The N is a darn good car! VW in the USA is dead to me. Their only desirable models at the moment are the GTI Clubsport - because it has a notable power increase over the Mk7 & the Golf R Estate - because it’s spacious & relatively lightweight. Piss off VW. We loved you for your decent pricing, diesels, station wagons, and 2-door hatchbacks.

I had a MK7 GTI and now I have a Veloster N. Overall I would say the GTI was a bit of a better daily comfort wise and the interior was a bit better also gas mileage was definitely better but the Veloster N is just pure fun and it has more personality. It knows what it is and it’s not going to be for everyone but Im head over heels for it, it’s just awesome. I love the styling, the driving dynamics, the power, and that exhaust. It’s an oddball too, they are definitely much rarer than GTI’s and I like the 3 door thing and blue color (with matching seatbelts) I rarely even see other N’s either but when I do I always get a wave. It’s pretty cool and overall I think it’s everything I wished the GTI was. Sadly it’s seeming like Hyundai are axing the Veloster N in favor of the Elantra N and Kona N and so 2022 is the last model year. So if you want one you should get on that because they will likely go up in value once they are officially discontinued like the Focus RS.

Such a good honest comparison. Thank you! I just got myself a GTI, but I would have gotten a Veloster N if there are any available ( crazy times). The V'N reminds me of my CRX from the late 80's which I love. Both are really good fun cars. I am 60 years old now, so forgive me for feeling slightly embarrassed getting out of a V'N.

Owned several GTI’s and they are great all daily’s. The new infotainment is tragic. But I now own a Veloster n 2022 performance blue manual. It’s so, so good and gets a ton of looks on the road. It’s raw, fun and when I think of a hot hatch this is it. The exhaust is a riot and the road feel is insane.

I freaking LOVE the Veloster N, and I think you did a great job keeping it fair without being too biased, haha! I don't think I have your level of self control. But I haven't been behind the wheel of a GTI yet, so I'll reserve my (biased) judgement until I actually get to drive one. Or I'll just wait for the new Type R and buy one of those because the Civic is freaking aces.

Great review. The chip shortage is gonna last till next year. There are still factories around the world trying to catch up with supply and demand. Used car prices will still be crazy till next year. As for the GTi or the Veloster N, I did look at both cars. Here in Canada, the Veloster N starts at around $38k cad and the DCT model goes for $39k cad which is the same price as the top trim for the GTi with DSG. I’m looking to get into a GTi at the end of the year. With supply being low, hopefully I will snag one then. Fingers crossed.

On the dyno, both cars make around 230whp and the Gti makes 15 lb ft more at around 285wtq, while the veloster makes 270wtq. The veloster has short ratios so that negates the torque increase

For now, Golf R or Audi RS3, if not just move on and up. Unfortunately the car market is insane but I say just find a really nice, used (ideally 2017+) GLA45 AMG instead of a new VW Golf.

So I have a mk7 gti (autobahn) that I bought in jan of 2017. It is a 6mt, as I didn't know much about the dsg coming from an s2000.
A few years back, I went to a hyundai dealer to look at the N, and they wouldn't even let me test drive it. (Still haven't driven one to this day.)
The main thing I was jealous of was the VN stock exhaust. Mine sounds similar with the catted downpipe, but the tone isn't as good.
The mk7 (i swapped the mk7.5 infotainment) has aged very well. Maybe if used car prices ever calm down, I will look for a used VN dct for specific daily activities if I end up with a bit of a commute as I'll still have my GTI to scratch the manual itch.

I would never find myself in love w/capacitive touch buttons....I loved Mk4 GTI 1.8t (despite the "hate"), but the car, for me was nearly flawless. It was't fast, but it "never lost". Even after 141k miles, it was going well. I looked at 2019 VWs (Mk7 GTI & Alltrack) and I was perplexed they felt the same as my '04, but were less raw overall than even my moderately tame GTI. I wanted more raw and passed on VW products and looked at Veloster-N, BRZ, WRX, etc. Ended up in a WRX because a Great Dane won't fit in the back seat of a BRZ. The Veloster-N was a close 3rd (along w/the Civic Si), but my Hyundai dealer (in 2019) was being unreasonable for Veloster-N test drives like it was a $80k car and I was some kid kicking tires (I was older than the salesman)....

This really comes down to preference. The GTI has a long history of being the hothatch that other companies have to compare against. The history is behind the GTI, and with every generation, it’s gets better, but by no means is the GTI trying to be the most aggressive hothatch. It’s the grown up hothatch, that gives its buyers a lot of “bang for your buck” in terms of performance, fit and finish, comfort, and technology.
The Veloster N is also great, but there is zero history behind it. Hyundai had to make it more aggressive and more powerful than the GTI, because if it wasn’t, nobody would have bought it, considering it’s a Hyundai. So Hyundai had to make it more fun in terms of performance to gain attraction, and in that, Hyundai did a great job. It sounds great, it looks great, it performs great, and so far it’s also proven to be pretty reliable.
As far as modifying is concerned, the GTI wins hands down. Mod for mod, the GTI gains much more in performance over the Veloster N. The MK7/7.5 GTI is a complete monster when tuned and modified, of which there isn’t a single other hothatch still in the market, that makes as much power gains over its stock power levels, than the GTI does, so in that, the GTI wins, but if keeping both car stock, the Veloster N is the funner car to drive.

Hardtops are boring. If you want to have real fun then consider the Mini Cooper S convertible. It's the one car that can do it all. It has two doors (like a fun car should). You can drop the top. Seats four people. Plenty of room for the driver and passenger. Handles like a go-cart. Looks retro cool. Lot's of colors to choose from. 3 or 4 cylinder engine options. Best bang for the buck.

Every single TH-camr that has driven both prefers the N. If only GTI fanboys would drive a VN, they'd be able to accept objective reality: N drives and performs better, has better user interface, and costs much less than an equally optioned GTI. To get adaptive dampers as the VN has standard u have to spend nearly $40k on a GTI that is still slower!

    • @realjsh

How about you cannot get anyone into the back seat. Or the fit and finish is 100x better in the VW.

    • @Sie84yv
      @Sie84yv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@realjsh Sure, if u wanna stare at your dashboard and useless infotainment, go for it. Most hot hatch buyers prefer to drive their cars than look at how pretty they are. Again, drive one and you'll see why EVERY mayor big hitter in TH-cam like Doug Demuro, Matt Farah, even Road & Track, Car & Driver, and Motor Trend magazines prefer the cheaper better performing N over the pretty (overpriced) GTI. When u drive a VN you'll understand

@@realjsh Then the slower, pricier, pretty car is your thing and that's great. I am a pharmaceutical executive and enjoy driving fast cars that also make noise and that's my thing. Most Doctors I visit and random people at the gas station compliment my car and the racing blue color. Nobody ever noticed me driving anything special when I drove my wife's MK6. VN is just a better car in every performance metric, and that's what matters to those of us who love driving above looks. As ridiculous as the Type R looks, I'd buy it if it weren't as overpriced as the GTI and Golf R are. The Golf R and Type R perform slightly better but cost $12k more than a VN and I'd rather invest that in stocks

Volkswagen dropped the ball when they stopped offering the 2 door. It was much more sporty than the 4 doors. The magic is lost for us enthusiasts who chose the GTI over other 2 door coupe sports cars.

Dude you might want to check yourself. Industry professionals of all kinds routinely note VW's reliability problems in general...right in line with the Audi marque, which is no surprise. Parts are more expensive as well. The Veloster is far from perfect but Hyundai backs their products with an amazing warranty, made moreso by the fact that the majority of owners don't need to use it.
