Prince of Persia: Speedrun World Record Progression (DOS Any%)

  • Documentary detailing the speedrun world record progression of the original Prince of Persia game on DOS (Any%)
At the start of lockdown in the UK, I decided to make my first world record progression video (The Lion King on SNES). Based on the feedback I received it inspired me to make a second video covering one of my favourite childhood games, the Prince of Persia.
I've aimed to apply the learnings from the feedback I received from the first video so I hope that this can be seen in this second video.
A massive thankyou to the amazing Prince of Persia speedrun community with special mention to the following runners: WinterThunder, VelCheran, Karlgamer, SuavePrince, higlak, YOLO4GG, Istaria, Final Elipsis, SprintGod, CapN Clever, Ma5terviking, htamas, Rob & Tammo (Jan) and Creditor
    Q&A about the video:
I received a couple of questions about why the main character is referenced as ‘the kid’ during the video rather than ‘the prince’.
The reason is that Jordan Mechner who created the game deliberately left the main character nameless throughout the adventure. The opening credits describe him as a ‘brave youth’ and Jordan named the character’s filename ‘kid.dat’. Hence, the kid.
It is only once the princess is saved at the end of the game that the ending credits state “No longer a stranger, he shall from this day forth be known as… Prince of Persia”.

I must have been 8 or so, when I finally managed to progress to the revived skeleton. That was the worst jumpscare experience I ever had even until now, and it made me have nightmares for a week, and I was traumatically afraid to touch the game until I was at least 15 or 16, even though I had played way heavier horror games, watched "It" etc. in between. I will never forget the shattering scare that gave me. It's been my favourite game ever since.

Yo, can we stop to talk about how FUCKIN POWERFUL THE SYMBOLISM IS IN THIS GAME.
The whole Doppleganger npc is a blatant methaphor for the roadblocks we put ourselves on our path.
Having you only progress foward until you stop fighting yourself, its a beautiful implementation of narrative trough mechanics.
Also, its referencing something everyone goes trough, something basic to human experience that can resonate with every single life story.
    Thats creative. thats fucking genious.

Nicely done! I'm glad to see some PC-based speedrun history videos done with a high level of quality. Looking forward to more! That said, I do agree with one of the other comments that the random stock nature footage is a little cheesy and out-of-place. If you need padding, why not include more footage of the runners themselves and\or their forum comments?
My one complaint about SummoningSalt's videos is they often turn into a long list of usernames duking it out without much insight into the people behind them. It'd be nice to see more of the runners' personalities.

I recall finding one of those jump-fall-teleport-up skips by accident once upon a time, perhaps while experimenting with the 2-tile back and forth running jump trick, but for the life of me I couldn't remember where now when I retried the game. Thanks to your video I may have finally found it again. I think it was the level 12 one you show at 17:50. Though really I feel it dropped me on the very top row of the level, perhaps one screen to the right of the one you show...
In my memory it was muddled with another glitch I had found at some earlier brighter-green level, perhaps under where the reviving skeleton was. It might have been just the same skeleton skip that you show, or a different one with the skeleton on the lower floor, but I'm not convinced since my vague feeling is it included a running jump that ended off-screen again.
It's so odd not being sure of my own memory even after watching this.
Now I wonder if all these glitches are possible on all DOS POP versions, or even other platforms...

  • @iannoonan9245
    @iannoonan9245 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ohh man! Really excited to see you uploaded another video. Quite an improvement over the first.
    Compared to the first video,
    - Definitely improved the music-voice volume balance. Pretty good this video.
    - I felt there was a good balance of the game clips. Not as much time spent on insignificant run montages.
    - No overly flashy transitions. In fact, I didnt even think about the transitions this time. I think you did well with them.
    - You spent a good deal of time discussing methods/ techniques and glitches. I loved it. Exactly what I was hoping for. And you showed them too. Good job.
    - I know I mentioned voice inflection in my comment from the first video. I think you did better with that regard. I think you're finding your own voice/ style.
    As far as this video,
    - I really liked the joke delivery. You made a couple jokes with a bit of a dry/ deadpan delivery. (My word choice might be off there, but I hope the sentiment comes across).
    - I thought you did a good job on the intro. I liked it. Maybe a bit dragged out. Not a big deal to me.
    - Was happy to hear the general plot and major game challenges.
    - I really liked how you analyzed some of the speedruns. I especially liked that you took one of the more optimized speedruns (CaptClever's) and dissected it. And then you referenced future runs to what they did different. I really appreciated that.
    - Specifically, I liked hearing about the integer overflow bug. I like how you explained that.
    - I enjoyed seeing some of the runners' reactions.
    - I liked the follow up segment at the end. I know I said on the first video that I felt it was a bit dragged out. Not the case this time. I think it was pretty good.
The only complaint I could manage, is that I felt some of music choices were a little ill fitting for some moments. Sometimes the vibe/ tone of the music just didn't seem to fit what you were discussing in the moment. Sometimes I felt the music was giving off a motivational/ inspirational mood, but I didn't feel it matched the topic. Sometimes it did though. I dont know if that could be remedied by using more of the in-game music? I'm sure there's a whole copyright aspect that I don't have to deal with either.
If you'd allow me to be nit-picky, I didn't care for a lot of the rhetorical questions. I didnt think they fit the mood of the video. But that is squarely my opinion. I think that's more of you're voice. If you liked it, keep it. Its simply not what I personally would do. (I'm sure that means a lot since I'm not making the videos lol.)
Like I said, I really did enjoy this video. Happy to see the improvement. I hope you keep making them. It looks like you're starting to come into your own style/ voice. I'm excited for another video. Keep up the good work.

You're going for grand, but it falls flat. There's a big discrepancy between the music and everything else. You could have maybe used the "epic" music a little towards the climax, but 40 minutes of it? Doesn't work. And the random nature shots are just hilarious.
Was fun to learn about the game though, cheers.

Awww man! Sorry you didn't enjoy. What sort of music do you feel would improve it? The original game literally has no music and I did purposefully try to stay away from too much other game music (mostly to avoid any comparisons with trying to simply copying summoning salt who holds the world record progression video category). Maybe need to find a balance. Anyway all the best!

@@theotterspocket8732 I think Jimmy's got a point, but I appreciate what you did here. While I do find the tone doesn't suit the video too well, it doesn't detract very much from watching it, and in all honesty, I don't know what I'd suggest to improve it. I do have to say that perhaps the part of the video with the best fitting tone was the big explaining that overflow bug, though.
Had it been my video, perhaps I'd have made introducing our runners and superfans the more grand and dramatic bits, and then taken the more technical explain-y tone with the rest. After all, the feats of these people are genuinely impressive things, they've certainly earned their royalty-free epic music.
Don't take my advice as law, though. I'm a dumbass, I've never edited a video, and I'd hate to mislead you. Had I infinite resources, time, and motivation to do something similar to this, this is simply an example of what I might try.
tl;dr Jimmy's right, video rules anyway, experiment with tone a bit if you wanna do more of these, but this was hella good.

haha, I watched the beginning of the video. "First speedrun was 42 minutes". I was like "wow, that's the time I had when beating the game. "That means the player had 42 minutes left on the timer", me: "oh...".

  • @ig2d

really enjoyed that thanks. I'm a little surprised that the speedrunning community doesn't use the in-game timer as the official measure.

      @@TimothyMakin ay 34:33 the in-game count-down timer reads 45:55 (i.e a 14:05 run) but this is adjusted to 14:04 according to the real-time/external timer

    • @theotterspocket8732
      @theotterspocket8732  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Karlgamer's 14:04 was the first official world record to use a mandatory autosplitter tool (LiveSplit) which is also used by other speedrunning communities. The reason for this was the community wanted to introduce greater accuracy when recording official times. Reasoning included the DOSbox emulator running at different cycles on different PCs which could result in a runner technically having an advantage over another runner if there PC could handle the game slightly better!
I contemplated covering this and even wrote some sections for it but ended up cutting it from the final edit as I was worried it may add additional confusion at such a late stage in the video! (although maybe not! :))
I've provided some additional background below to help explain the reasons between the times:
The discrepancy comes from the fact that the timer in-game counts backwards, so when that timer's value is 45:55.42 the actual time it took to complete the run is 60 minutes minus that, 14:04.58
The time shown in-game is then rounded down. But the actual run was finished in 14:04(.58)
The reason why a second wasn't subtracted to account for this and the game still shows 45:55, is that there is a 1/12 chance that doing so will cause an error. E.g. if the timer is 45:55.00, then the IGT is 14:05.00, hence a second doesn't need to be subtracted. The chance is 1/12 because the game runs at 12fps. So that's the chance the timer will end in .00

I played this game so much when I was little, and I'm not even that old, we were just broke af. I had a laptop with a dim black and white display running windows 98, it was good enough for a kid's needs. I played Prince Of Persia to death. You can imagine my face when we finally had a PS2 and my dad brought us a copy of Sand Of Time
