I stumbled on this video quite by accident, and even though I've never played through OOT myself and I don't know much about the speedrunning world, I found myself watching the entire thing anyways because it was so interesting! It's exactly like the physicists at the the of the 19th century who were trying to be coy, while at the same time announcing that all important physics had been discovered...you know, before superconduction, all of nuclear physics, and before black holes were even theorized.
@@LGustavoGugs Because that time you are talking about is just a credits warp which he talks about at around 29:00. They added a "defeat Ganon" category which is what this video is focusing on 2 years ago
The thing that pisses me off about Twin Galaxies is their stubborn adherence to "no exploits". In the competitive pinball scene, entire strategies are developed around exploits; for a perfect example, look up "Bowen vs the right ramp". This particular game features a cannon on the playfield that is fed from the right ramp. It can be aimed to various features, including the right ramp. You can probably guess where this is leading.
This video was fantastic! Such an in depth and thorough retrospective! It's fascinating to see the lineage of discoveries this game gave to people, even 20 years later people were still playing the game, and like you said it's almost like it was all by design. I think in may ways this game is still the greatest game of all time, not only because of how revolutionary it was, but because of how perfect or imperfect the programming was that allowed people to do all these things. I think it's beyond a work of art, it's a thing of beauty.
Great video! This must have taken forever to make! Props to you dude I enjoyed every minute, watching some amazing history of one of my favorite games!

Wow, this was a great rundown. The kind of depth and quality I'd expect from a SS progression video, and you're awesome for being so respectful to Narcissa as to run everything by her first.
A.bit late here I guess, but oh well. BA (Bottle adventure) let's you put items on your sword button. So, pressing B could let you pull out bombs, a bow, deku sticks, etc. RBA is when you get items you shouldn't from having a bottle on B. So, if you had RBA set up and were still using the normal ocarina, you could use RBA to just replace it with the ocarina of time. You could also just give yourself bombs, bombchus, etc.

Quality vid, its the first OOT one I have seen which takes the time to explain the glitches in simple terms. I like Summoning Salts vids but they are dry without looking at the interesting bits; the glitches and optimizations. I don't speed run but I like watching about them, but the problem is the glitches and evolution of them are not explained. I would love to see more vids like this which look more on the optimisations than just the world record times. Good job.

great vid. I have many memories of posting in the OoT thread on the SDA forums glitchhunting way back in 2008, glad to see many of those same names featured here
In this video I think I would have discussed Lens of Truth as being the first major skip, but also, the Kokiri's Emerald was done away with too easily -- you need to find Forest Escape first! But on the whole I think this is a pretty informative video, yeah. Anyway, the story of how I theorized Ganondoor gets told every now and again but... nobody asks for it from my perspective. You're getting it anyway. The Deku Boss->Deku Tree wrong warp to Tower Collapse first intrigued me the very day Wrong Warp was found, before anybody really understood how the glitch worked. I was the first to test where that entrance led to, setting FW up at the top of the main room, wrong warping into blackness, and walking backward to see Ganondorf drop dead in front of me. So I found this wrong warp particularly interesting. Some months before Wrong Warp was found I asked Runnerguy why, in 100%, the Odd Mushroom Timer was used only to skip the cutscene in Forest Temple and not in the Deku Tree. He said it was because it crashed, I asked why, and he said it was because "it's OoT." It wasn't until a few months after Wrong Warp that I remembered this conversation and realized it was probably crashing due to a failed wrong warp. So I began thinking about how else I might warp away from a blue warp, which included things like failing timers, playing songs, or falling OoB. When I tried the Eyeball Frog timer, I guess I timed it wrong, and it crashed on me. It would have wrong warped to Lon Lon, which is credits if done out of Fire, so if it hadn't crashed I might have called it mission accomplished right there. The entrance table at the time was not particularly helpful in determining which loading zone was which, but yes, I was pouring over it and trying to spot anything that could be helpful. (Mzxrules would probably be mad if I didn't at least mention that he helped me understand how Wrong Warp worked, so here I am, mentioning that.) Anyway, ZFG's last day of any% attempts rolls around and I didn't want to happen to him what happens to everybody else after they finish with a game -- a week later a huge new skip gets found -- so I starting telling Sockfolder about my ideas. I get to the end of the discussion and, trying to think of more ways to warp way from a blue warp, I ask, "Is there any way to leave a room that we haven't thought of?" And that's when it hits me how you leave a room -- through a door. Genius, right? Who would have thought? The implications hit me immediately because I already knew the result if it would actually work. I was really excited at this moment, though Sock didn't seem all that enthused, lol; I was always asking him to test dumb stuff (and still do). I tried a dozen or so times to just pull it off in real time with no idea how to time it properly, but I got fed up with that and finally convinced Sock to try give it a try. As they say, "Ganon's back, baby!" In the next day or two, more of my wrong warp ideas were tested and expanded upon. For example, maxx pointed out that if you bottle dupe over your trade item, an expiring timer will reload your last entrance rather than taking you away somewhere else, asking "Does that help?" I'm like, what do you mean "Does that help?" Of course that helps! So the timer wrong warp Deku->Bongo was found, along with the timer Ganonless out of Fire. Since then, more and more crazy wrong warps continue to be found, even just a few days ago, they figured out a way to Wrong Warp from the Silver Gauntlets cutscene for the first time. There is potential for an even more busted Wrong Warp to be found some day, though it's hard to say how it would be done. Like, if your death animation were just a bit faster, you could get access to the title screen save file in "Beta Quest" mode, where playing Nocturne would take you immediately to Ganon. Or, if you could somehow get control during the Epona's Song cutscene, you could warp straight into the credits as child. But the likelihood of those things not only being found, but also not requiring much in the way of setup, I think makes them unlikely to obsolete the current route. Then again, "it's OoT," so anything is possible. OK? Alright then.
+canadianstickdeath I didn't really count Lens of Truth as a major skip as it's really just memory. And yeah, I definitely could've included forest escape, but I was trying to make the video somewhat streamlined without too much detail. Anyway, thanks for the info, it's very interesting to hear the personal accounts of people who discovered glitches like this. IIRC I saw you going back and forth with mzxrules on TASVideos trying to understand Wrong Warp in 2012 when I was doing some research.
Endlessly fascinating, these old games. You sound like someone pouring over the tomes of a lost civilization, trying to understand it and find their treasure. Or like a guy with weird hair in front of a massive dart board, red strings and all, coming to realize that the government really is lizards. What a unique property of this medium, that there can be so much depth to it in ways that were never intended.
you're damn right I'd be mad Kappa b I was probably the only one that was part of the community that had a decent grasp on the concept since I did lots of testing before wrong warp was discovered proper, but I definitely learned a hell of a lot more once I stopped "black box" testing things in MHS and started hacking the game properly.
man this video was abolutely amazing. I was just looking for something in the background while I cleaned but I was just glued to the screen thanks to the magic of your explanation! Thank you for the great hour of entertainment
Honestly this showcasing of the veritable autopsy of OoT is one of the best videos on TH-cam. It could've only been possible with a game this famous with a large fanbase of brilliant people, a game new to 3D, and just a whole lot of luck with some of those possibilities. Speed run histories are unbelievably fascinating and it's great to know about the giants on whose shoulders the current fastest times stand on. The IQue freezes for the Deku Nut Base Item freeze glitch, and I assume it only freezes for the diving method of the freeze glitch? If not, the IQue can get a much better time. Maybe some workaround with the IQue can be found anyway.

Thank you ! With the current strats it is definitely not possible to reach such a time. I'd say the absolute human limit is 7:07 right now. Maybe if you go for the god RNG (which has 1/512 to happen) you could even get 7:06. Now, while the god RNG can happen (it happened to me multiple times actually) you'd have to trust your luck and go for the best bushes right away, not even trying to farm the bushes on the left side.

Thank you for finally making me understand the wrong warp and why it behaves differently in fire temple and the child dungeons with easy to understand graphics of the areas being loaded.
Znernicus ya he did a great job
it's good for a basic understanding, but doesn't explain why you don't get stuck in a cutscene after the wrong warp :)
I've always wanted to do a full video on how wrong warp works, but it's very hard to get everything together in one big picture
Bismuth has a 2 part video going more in depth on wrong warping. Check it out!
@@mzxrules bismuth did a2 part one all about it
@@PolarBailey I know, I collaborated with him on it :)
I stumbled on this video quite by accident, and even though I've never played through OOT myself and I don't know much about the speedrunning world, I found myself watching the entire thing anyways because it was so interesting! What a fascinating look into the sub-community that must revolve around this sort of thing. I love seeing the way games can be taken apart and broken internally through the most unbelievable means, I'm blown away at how some people even think to do them in the first place. I'll have to check out the rest of your channel, I enjoyed this. :)
I like how you did the progression of finding glitches and warps first and then the world records. I liked that.
I honestly love the history of the speedrun, great video I've already watched this four times casually. Very fun to go down memory lane
Thought I wouldn’t watch it all given the length, but it actually didn’t feel long. Great vid !
Glad you mentionned in the description that it was rushed towards the end because you can def feel it. But that’s okay though, everything else make up for it
Current record is an insane 6min 49s
We REALLY need a part 2
Not knowing anything about the record ahead of time, I immediately Googled the current WR after finishing this video. Wow. It's exactly like the physicists at the the of the 19th century who were trying to be coy, while at the same time announcing that all important physics had been discovered...you know, before superconduction, all of nuclear physics, and before black holes were even theorized.
Thats without beating Ganon The record is 13m10s
@@popjibbletz You don't fight Ganon on Any%
@@LGustavoGugs Because that time you are talking about is just a credits warp which he talks about at around 29:00. They added a "defeat Ganon" category which is what this video is focusing on 2 years ago
I just watched a sub 4 minute run
Hey guys we have this great new idea for improving how you play games-
Twin Galaxies: *BANNED!*
That’s just one of the many reasons it’s considered a joke
I've watched this whole video now the second time, It's just that good. :) thanks for making.👍
nice dragon double flip
This video was fantastic! Such an in depth and thorough retrospective! It's fascinating to see the lineage of discoveries this game gave to people, even 20 years later people were still playing the game, and like you said it's almost like it was all by design. I think in may ways this game is still the greatest game of all time, not only because of how revolutionary it was, but because of how perfect or imperfect the programming was that allowed people to do all these things. I think it's beyond a work of art, it's a thing of beauty.
I actually love this type of content on youtube. I feel like showing how the community has come together is a really cool thing, great video man!
Great video. Good to see someone from the UK making content on speedrunning.
Great video! This must have taken forever to make! Props to you dude I enjoyed every minute, watching some amazing history of one of my favorite games!
+horsedude5000 Thanks! To be honest, it didn't take that long, it was about two weeks. However, this was more of a precursor to give me experience for a bigger project I'm now working on that will take quite some time.
Did anyone else notice at 4:56 that he said "it's more like 25,000 hours, I've played this game non stop for 2 years" when there are only 17500 hours in 2 years? What a guy.
He plays with 2 consols at the same time.
@@roydm143 2 counsols doesnt double the hours played silly boi
@@dr.fauci_tortured_n_killed5034 Yes it does, because there are two machines, so once you play 1 hour you multiply by 2 so you get 2 hours. Basic math geeez
Your explanation of the wrong warp glitch was PERFECT! Ive never understood it until now! Thank yo so much!
Torje at 17.01 now. Sub 17 *IS* coming.
Great video man !
And then ACE happened and sub 7 has been done.
Good video man! Only been watching speedrunning in general since ~2012 and OoT any% was my gateway drug. This was really informative, keep up the good work :)
Wow, this was a great rundown. The kind of depth and quality I'd expect from a SS progression video, and you're awesome for being so respectful to Narcissa as to run everything by her first.
waluigiwithachainsaw at least it works. What does not being a dick have to do with politics anyways?
waluigiwithachainsaw low effort troll. Sad. You could do better.
Spencer Fowler that's one of the most original insults I've read in a long time. Kudos o3o
THANK you for lowering the volume for the screaming parts.
Good video! Love seeing names like Kazooie and AKA in 2017
Wow I'm amazed how well you explain everything! Well done, enjoyed every second of it.
BA requires bottle on B and bottle on B causes RBA. i still don't know how they found BA first. i wish RBA was BA and BA was RBA lol
What's the difference anyways?
BA is getting any items on B from bottle on B. RBA is manipulating inventory with bottle on B.
Speak English please
sva !
I've stopped watching Oot Any% runs around 2015, and this video explained all the new cool strats invented since then really well. Great video!
Dude, props to you for actually asking summoning salt if it's cool to do this episode. A lot of ppl are knocking off his idea and your the first one I heard shout him out
A tip of my hat to you sir
This is SO INTERESTING! I love finding out the history of the breaking of a game over time. It's like this hidden history that only a few people know about. I'm glad there are more youtubers making this kind of content.
1 year anniversary for this video and 378k views. Well deserved, this was really good
I remember watching your other video aaaages ago and found it was really good. Glad to see you're still making content. Keep it up! Kind of curious as to what you'll tackle next but I figure these in-depth vids take loads of time so I'm happy to wait. Subscribed.
Excellent video!!! I was around to see Narcissa (Cosmo) set WRs but have been a bit out of touch with route updates since then, but your thorough explanations cleared things right up. Cheers
Great walkthrough of the history. A close friend of mine is really into Speedruns, but I knew nothing about OOT speedruns going in to this video. It was incredibly accessible and informative.
and finally in 2021 a glitch was discovered which warps Link directly from his house to the credits.
This video is great, and I can't wait to see more like it. I love the combination of information as well as jokes in this format. Keep it up retro!
Good job.
Retro, youre very good at this. You and Summoning Salt both are great speedrun historians. Thanks for making these videos!
I have been waiting for summoning salt to do this and you made my wish come true. Thank you good sir.
The greatest video on youtube, this video single handedly got me into speedrunning and defind a period of my life, i can't say enough how much i love this video. What a creation, i hope one day i can make something even near as good as this
I still remember watching 7h long OoT speedruns some 15 years ago, downloading them from SDA.
0002pA holy shit i wouldnt sit down for 7h speedrunning lmao
FreshBeats thats a generational difference
222333aaaaaa yeah, the fact that it used to take 7h to complete but now it takes 17min... WOW!
Dude that brings back good memories, I think I'll watch an old 5 hour run just to forget my troubles
Just watch final fantasy speedruns
Amazing video man, you went back to the roots, all the way to where speedrunning of this game currently is at. You explained everything perfectly and i have learned a lot. Keep up the work man!!!
"Every nook and cranny of this game has been searched. So maybe it's unrealistic to expect any more discoveries in ANY%."
6 years later: the record is down to under 4 mins.
This channel had so much potential
TSA left his mark splicing his runs LUL
Great video. I saw how long it was at first and figured I'd skip through some bits but it flew by and I was surprised to see I had watched the whole thing! Well done.
Damn I remember watching Narcissa's 18:10 run like a day after it dropped. I had such a hard time comprehending what the hell I just saw. That run introduced me to speedrunning. Great video!
You mean Cosmos run since it was Cosmo at that time. He even says Cosmo in this video, not Narcissa
That was a impressively well-done and informative video! OOT is one of the most fascinating speedgames out there, and this video shows just why.
And now TSA has gone on to win every category in every game ever after he changed his name to TAS
Ive watched full fledged films shorter than this and yet most of them arent made this well, I wouldnt be surprised to see you boom up in popularity with videos as properly edited and paced as these, had me interested all the way through and I dont even pay attention to oot runs, 99% of the information I know now I learned from this video. awesome job man!
Wow. What an amazing video. Watched it from start to end and never got bored while watching it. You should upload more often if you can. Your videos are wonderful

As of March 31st, 2019, Torje has brought the record down to 17:01, if anyone is curious.
I was, thank you, we're so close to sub 17!
Update: the new world record is 7:34!!
Wow really well made video man. Sometimes we tend to watch videos without actually taking in that each of these clips had to be downloaded, organized, edited and put in proper chronological order. This was like watching a documentary. I'll say it again. Really well made dude. And i almost wish I could go 5 years in the future to see the progression of this game.
great vid. I have many memories of posting in the OoT thread on the SDA forums glitchhunting way back in 2008, glad to see many of those same names featured here
very well done, inspired me to dust off my old copy of OoT and remember how awful I am at the game. lol
Dude I respect you so much for researching all this to find all the sources. You truly are a legend sir!
"so maybe it's unrealistic to spect any more big discoveries"
Oooooh, how little we knew back then...
You sir, deserve my like as it is clear that you have done much research and have a lot of knowledge about this topic. Bravo, retro, bravo.
(Mzxrules would probably be mad if I didn't at least mention that he helped me understand how Wrong Warp worked, so here I am, mentioning that.)
Anyway, ZFG's last day of any% attempts rolls around and I didn't want to happen to him what happens to everybody else after they finish with a game -- a week later a huge new skip gets found -- so I starting telling Sockfolder about my ideas. As they say, "Ganon's back, baby!"
In the next day or two, more of my wrong warp ideas were tested and expanded upon.
What a unique property of this medium, that there can be so much depth to it in ways that were never intended.
you're damn right I'd be mad Kappa b
I was probably the only one that was part of the community that had a decent grasp on the concept since I did lots of testing before wrong warp was discovered proper, but I definitely learned a hell of a lot more once I stopped "black box" testing things in MHS and started hacking the game properly.
What is this, a script for a Pannenkoek Video?
man this video was abolutely amazing. I was just looking for something in the background while I cleaned but I was just glued to the screen thanks to the magic of your explanation! Thank you for the great hour of entertainment
I had been waiting for summoning salt to make this video, but you beat him to it. Great job, but that ending tho
Where did you go buddy!? I liked your videos
I love the summoning salt eps, but you really went above and beyond in researching this, even finding old MTV news articles! Well done

Thank you for making the video I almost made myself. Like you, watching SummoningSalt's history videos inspired me to start thinking of an OoT history video, but then today I got the thought to just search to see if it had been done in great detail, and it was. So thanks for basically making my video for me, saves me time XD.

Great video, thank you so much for making it!! I am a longtime Zelda fan and recently stumbled onto the world of speed running and have really been enjoying watching videos. You should consider making an updated Part 2 2020 edition with all the recent changes!
I'm not going to lie, within the first two minutes I was going to post something relatively rude (without even watching the whole video) because I typed this in expecting a Summoning Salt video. But not only did you mention that you respectfully asked him for permission, but I have to say, this is as thoroughly researched and perfect as any of his MASTER LEVEL videos are. So thank you for doing justice to the chain of these videos, and also, thank you for all of the excellent research, deep knowledge, and (since I am American ;) ) soothing and attractive accent. Great video! The length and detail qualify it as a documentary film. Summoning Salt makes such high quality content that I was expecting a poorly produced rip off. I was very pleasantly surprised. I am I speedrunning spectator - I watch many videos but I don't run or research the games myself. I had been unable to fully enjoy OoT runs because I did not understand enough about what they were doing with all the glitches. You explained this a way that made it very easy to learn. Well done and I hope you produce another soon.

Touji: ok just let me beat oot real quick
This was so nice to watch, so much nostalgia, great work man !
Amateseru just got the WR in any% with a 7:09.850. Congrats Amateseru for getting a sub 7:10. I wonder if a sub 7 is possible or a 7:05?
@@Amateseru it's crazy that most of the run is the opening cutscenes now. lol Started with 6 hours, we're down to almost under 7 minutes. Absolutely nuts. gg's. The future category now is 100%! I think that category can reach sub 3 eventually.
I watched the whole thing. Really enjoyed it! Have you made anything else like this. Brilliant stuff. Great work.
Its too bad you didnt mention all the forest escape glitches people found, those got me into zelda speedruns. Its no big deal though, loved the video. It made me very nostalgic for the old days of OoT speedrunning.
I was wary about going into too much detail so I only really covered the main stuff. Forest escape is probably the biggest omission out of all the other stuff I could've added.
no, thats considered physical, hardware modification. Plus that has the potential to break your cartridge permanently.
