The History of Majora's Mask Any%

  • Welcome to the history of the world record for The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask any%! In this video, I cover the world record progression of the any% speedrunning category in Majora's Mask from its release to the present day.
This is my first ever scripted video, so I'm hoping it's acceptable! I started working on this in early 2018, but I procrastinated until now. It turns out that was the right decision, though, since a lot happened in this game in the past year.
I plan on making many more videos like this that go more in-depth on lots of Majora's Mask topics, from how glitches work, to thought experiments (hOW maNy RUpeeS Do YOu NeeD to beAT tHe GAMe), as well as other stuff I probably haven't thought of yet. Let me know if you have any ideas for things you want me to cover!
    Corrections:
-Gigopler's name should have been capitalized in the credits (sorry, Gigo, not rerendering the whole thing for that)
-I implied that sva had the record in January 2014 for "12 hours," but I don't actually know how long it was. Not sure why I said 12 hours. Definitely less than a day, but also definitely longer than Trev had the record in 2017, so 12 hours is probably a decent guess.
-The info at 40:50 should say August 23rd, not September. The time is correct, though.
    Songs used (in order):
    1. Title Demo (Majora's Mask)
    2. Milk Bar (Majora's Mask)
    3. Stone Tower Temple (Majora's Mask)
    4. Clock Tower (Majora's Mask)
    5. Grandpa's House (Wind Waker)
    6. Ordon Theme (Twilight Princess)
    7. Hyrule Field (Twilight Princess)
    8. Skyloft Theme (Skyward Sword)
    9. Goron Village (Majora's Mask)
    10. Toad Town Theme (Paper Mario)
    11. Stickerbrush Sympony (Donkey Kong Country 2)
    12. Forest Maze (Super Mario RPG)
    13. Puzzle Theme (Metroid Prime)
    14. Lake Hylia (Twilight Princess)
    15. Rogueport Theme (Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door)
    16. Lazy Afternoons (Kingdom Hearts II)
    17. Let's Do the Fooka Fooka (Super Mario RPG)
    18. The Isle of Songs (Skyward Sword)
    19. Lanayru Desert (Skyward Sword)
    20. Forest Haven (Wind Waker)
    21. Firelink Shrine (Dark Souls)
    22. Click Clock Wood (Spring) (Banjo-Kazooie)

Just so everyone's aware, there will be a part 2 to this video. I was working on a 100% history video, and then all hell broke loose in any%. Debug menu and MOONWARP. I don't know when the video will come out, but I'd like to wait until the record starts to settle down again before uploading anything, so it might be a month or two. See y'all then!

    • @Qwackin604
      @Qwackin604 4 ปีที่แล้ว +51

The nice thing about him making the genre is he isn't possessive over it, if he wanted to he could scream rip off at every one of these types of videos but he doesn't and because of that rather than him having to learn all about a game that he has no experience in, in order to make a video, we get people who were actually there/ know the game really well which lets content like this get produced faster EG. This video, Linkus Wind Waker video, AverageTreys Super Mario Sunshine video. I love this kind of content and I'm glad we are seeing alot more of it

I love WR progression videos mainly because it's so fascinating how different speedrunning was back then and how sophisticated glitch hunting, practice and execution has become. And also how SVA is relevant in every 3D zelda game. Can't wait to see the rest of the 3D Zelda games to get a video like this.

I remember being a bit skeptical of Grunz run at the time, but I'm fairly sure his run was done on PJ64 1.6, playing the run with sync game to audio turned off on the audio plugin, hence the consistent popping and breaking noises. It's a distinct sound that only occurs on older versions of pj64 and isn't ever present on mupen playbacks.
That aside, fantastic video dude :)

these videos are so amazing , even if you watch a game , like , i watch all zelda games , i sometimes watch oot from zfg , i sometimes watch mm from majinphil , i watch windwaker from linkus and gymnast ( i also watch skyward sword from gym ) and lastly i watch minish cap from toadswoot
but even though i played all those games myself tons of times and i watched probably thousands of oot atempts so far , i know little about the discovery of glitches , like for oot , i know the any% route is to leave the forest , get bottle and bugs , kill ghoma , warp to ganons tower and done , but i dont know how someone found out that you can wrong warp there , or that you can get out of kokiri forest through the stone clip or the other clip where you glitch into the guy guarding the exit , its just super interesting to watch a documentation on those things , i havent watched oot much for a while and suddenly seeing 3 child segments , i just want to know why that was changed , and thankfully theres tons of these videos lately i really wish there were more super long ones , like this one , or linkus' wind waker hd wr history video
i really hope someone makes a long oot , tp and skyward sword history video , or a banjo tooie video ( as someone who casually speedran tooie a few years ago , i would be super interested how people figured out the jinjo patterns (like if the spiral mountain one is purple you have a white one in MT would be interesting to know ) and other glitches , these type of world record progression videos have so much potential for entertainment in my opinion , i could watch these videos for hours without getting bored , sometimes they are more entertaining than the runs themselves
    th-cam.com/video/qCnkeZOUqyg/w-d-xo.html
this run defenitely is fun to watch and makes me wish tooie was on steam , but seeing a video on how these things were discovered would be even better
