Hi! Frezy_man here. Great video and glad to be mentioned! Very impressed over the development of speedrunning this game for all the runners after me! so much quicker than I could imagine being possible at this game at the time. Back when I was researching and practicing for the (first) record It felt like I was alone in the world even think about running this great game - One of the beloved childhood game of mine. The only place I could watch for learning was the TAS which I think was the only run ever of the game. I figured out many strats by myself. The TAS at the time had some good tricks but did not include the short-cut in stage 3. Appreciate the video and some of the parts of the game itself that is memorable for a gamer before you even think of running the game. Keep it up!

@@theotterspocket8732 just to ad another note. If I recal correctly Tompa did actually helped me with my strategy on the waterfall boss, I think he showed med a faster way of doing that fight. So I was originally planning to go for a slower kill.

I can't believe those tricks and skips were only found after 2012. I spend several hours a week playing this game when I was a kid, and pulled most of the "frame perfect" jumps way back in 2001. As a 9 year old. Heck, I found a gorilla double invinsible hit that lets you skip two phases of the fight, the skip to phase through the thorns AND that you could pass between the floor rocks in Simba's Exile. The offscreen Scar defeat almost gave me a heart attack the first time after he simply dissapeared and I did the stand-still on the stampede because I wanted some time to rest after the ostrich sections.
I never recorded it. It didn't cross my mind.
Back then I didn't even know what a speedrun was. My sister and me just had to share an hour to play videogames a day so I just grinded the game until I could finish it on my half hour of playtime and still have time to advance an extra level on Super Mario World. I'm not sure how many hours I spent improving my times on this game. I got to a point where I had time for a one or two levels on Megaman X, Demon's Crest or Contra 3. I had to be close to 15 minutes to have time to swap the cartridge and get things done.
I also used to play my faulty copy of DKC2 that didn't let me save, so I had to beat the whole game in one sitting without dying once and in only half an hour, or my sister would start complaining I was hogging ther time. So I ended "speedruning" a few games without even realizing what i was doing.
I still got those cartridges and the beated up SNES in a box in my room. Now I'm curious to see how close I am to the current word record using the things I learned from back then.

I enjoyed the video, I love this game, and I enjoyed seeing the progression of the times. My biggest comment would be that after a SummoningSalt video I could probably teach someone the intricacies and the importance of each skip discovered. After this video, I am aware of some of the skips and glitches, but I couldn't explain them. The side by side for the waterfall was good but what makes that route different, yeah, know? Maybe if you cut down on footage of runs and used that time to explain glitches and their significance it would be better? I'm subscribed and looking forward to what you make next.

    • @theotterspocket8732
      @theotterspocket8732  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Thanks for the detailed feedback it's really appreciated! I will certainly look to explain the glitches/skips better in future videos. Others have also mentioned to me about cutting some of the run times so also taken that on board. I've also invested heavily in a new mic so hope it does the trick. Cheers and thanks for watching! 👍

A very good video. I really enjoyed it.
I suppose I'll give my thoughts.
    - I'll echo what some of the other commenters have said, they music was really loud. At some points, it really drowned out your voice.
    - I think there was an excessive amount of time spent on montages of individual runs which weren't really significant.
    - I really did not like the flashy transitions (the ones with the dotted text). I liked the segment, just not the transitions.
    - You mention new glitches, but they weren't really shown. Or if they were, it was unclear to me.
    - The ending of the video (between where the record stands now and start of the "where are they now") seemed drawn out.
    - There wasn't a lot of voice inflection. Not much more is needed. I recognize the Summoning Salt vibe, but some of the significance of a new run or a massive time save was lost for me when there is no change in inflection.
    - I did like the music choices.
    - The side by side comparison of different runs with different techniques was a nice touch.
    - I thoroughly enjoyed the "where are they now" segment.
Some things I'd like to see included in a future video:
    - Discussion of tactics, methods, and glitches. You mention that they exist, but they are never really explained.
    - TAS runs (if they exist for a given game). I find they provide a nice benchmark for comparison.
    - An explanation of how the game works. For example, with this game, pretty much everyone is well aware of its difficulty, but a little discussion why or how for those who aren't familiar or don't have first hand experience.
I recognize a lot of this is easy to say from behind my keyboard. I don't want to come across hostile. I also recognize some of my comments are a little petty. Nevertheless, I think you did an incredible job. Definitely approaching SummoningSalt quality. I eagerly look forward to another video if you choose to make one.

Thanks for the really detailed feedback. It's really useful to get that amount of information to work on and yes, certainly spurs me on to consider making future videos. I completely take on board the music being too loud when talking. I spent alot of time playing with the volumes and hoped I'd found a good balance (you shouldve heard the earlier versions!) It looks like I still missed the mark though and maybe I was trying too much to compensate for the music over my vocal capabilities! Again a massive thankyou for the feedback. I really appreciate it

This is great content. But like other's have pointed out the background music is very frustrating. I would keep it to a minimum in the future as it takes away focus and it makes it hard to hear you. In most places the background music isn't at all necessary. I would stick to using it at points in the video where you aren't talking for somewhat long periods to fill in the sound gap and then I would just use the game's natural soundtrack. Other than that this is very good content and look forward to future videos.

Had this for the Mega Drive as a kid. I can't remember thinking it was THAT difficult, except for the last stage before the final boss, I died on that stage so many times. When I played the game as an adult however I couldn't get past the second stage no matter how much I tried, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how I made it past that stage virtually every time back in the 90's..

    Excellent video.
If you are going to keep doing them (and I think you should!) here are some recommendations:
Tone down the background music. Your voice and explination of what is being talked should be second to none.
Stick to A font for your texts.
IF a single runner break the WR in succesion, do not waiste so much time showing all the times he do so, specially if your going to stay quieted for most of that time. Pick a single part of that run you like it, preferently the best momment of that run (or just the last seconds in wich it beat the game) and move on to the next best part of the next time he beat the WR.

Thanks that's really useful feedback thankyou. I agree that maybe I overcompensated in places putting the background music louder compared to my voice, in the thought that "hey if people hate my voice at least the background music is good". That's a massive learning for me and certainly something I will look to correct. Again comments like yours are reason enough to consider doing future videos so thankyou
