    I’ve had this same bike (Aethos Pro Force) since April of this year. The only thing I did was to swap the wheelset for a tubeless set. I live in Boulder Colorado and most of the secondary mountain roads are unpaved, so tubeless is a must. I run Roubaix 30mm tires on Reynolds rims. They size out at about 33mm and have plenty of clearance.
    This bike rides phenomenally. I’ve ridden and raced road, track, cyclocross and mountain bikes since 1987. This is the last road bike I’ll ever need. It goes everywhere. Climbs like a dream and descends on rails even on rough gravel fire access roads. They somehow managed to create something tha transcends all the marketing BS and is actually as good as all the reviewers say it is.

    “Silent assassin” - great description of this bike. I’ve been riding one for about five months now and it is smooth, responsive, light and a joy to ride. Great review.

    Thanks for your update! I have the Aethos Comp in the same color
    and have been riding it since May. Mine is a 56 size and I have done nothing
    to it except a set of brakes. I have about 1700 miles on it and a lot climbing.
    Being my first Carbon bike after 7 years on Aluminum, I am loving my bike!
    I look forward to updating to some carbon wheels in a year or two. It was really
    easy to pull the trigger on this bike. When this bike was introduced, I knew
    that it was for me. The simplicity, ease of service, ample/economical
    upgrade choices, and frame weight were exactly what I wanted.

      That's awesome! What happened to the original brakes? Seems like a weird thing that would need replacing so soon. A wheelset will change the entire way this bike handles and will turn it into something very special. Enjoy :)

      @@MitchOnTwoWheels The brake pads were worn out since I like to climb a lot and I am a judicious braker. I have since tried to be easier on them. I think the pads were organic (vs metallic).The wheels I have now are R470s. I also just ordered some tan wall GP5000s based on the way they look on your bike! I still have the original turbo pro tires.

      Ahhh gotcha. You’re going to love the GP5000’s… They are an amazing tire. I still have the specialized tires hanging in the wall but will try them out in the spring most likely.

    Spot on review! I love my Aethos and the only negative is as you have mentioned, a bit of front brake rub when rocking side to side or hard front end braking. Supple is definitely a great word to describe the ride, even with 25c TLs.

    Great review. After watching this I decided to buy one. I was between the Aethos Comp with Roval C38 wheels and a Giant TCR Prod Disc with Ultegra Di2. Bothe great bike, but this one fits my riding style better.

    Thank you, Mitch, for this thoughtful review. It is nice to get a review of this bike from a taller and more powerful rider versus the reviews from smaller riders on 54s or 56s. I have both an Aethos and Tarmac SL7 (size 58 10r frameset builds + Dura Ace 9120 + 45mm Farsports Feder wheels) and have noticed the exact same "issues" with my Aethos than you pointed out: the front end flex manifesting as sporadic disc rub and the bent hangar. I have two smaller and lighter friends on 56s who have not experienced the bendy bits. I thought I was going crazy until I came upon this video! Thank you!
    I had the SL7 first and picked up an Aethos when the SL7 recall was first rumored. Agreed again that the Tarmac is stiffer (not at all in a bad way), but that the Aethos just goes the same way. I feel like riding the Aethos is like running with a young dog who has boundless energy. It always wants to go go go. If the Aethos is like a young energetic dog, the SL7 is like a greyhound - lightening fast and super controlled. I think I prefer the Tarmac for the flatlands where I live, but would probably appreciate the Aethos more in an area with more interesting terrain. Specialized has really nailed it with both if you ask me!

      I’m 6’3” 195 lbs, I ride an Aethos S Works, and absolutely love it. To solve your disc rotor rubbing issue, I highly recommend swapping out the stock rotors for Shimano’s mountain bike rotor, the XTR RT-MT900. It is stiffer than the road version but also manages to be lighter due to the increased ventilation for cooling (I assume). I have had disc rubbing issues on every disc brake bike I’ve ridden until I read about this fix that TDF riders adopted last year. I have not had a single rotor rubbing issue since making this change, and I routinely put out 1,200 watts going up steep grades. I also swapped out the 140 rotor for a 160 so both front and rear have 160s. I think one of them (front??) comes stock with 140. You’ll need a simple adapter to go from 140 to 160 but your LBS can easily order one. Have fun.

      Good call, @@davidhaase3179. I use those 160mm XTR 900 rotors already. What I ended up doing to "solve" my problem is swap out the calipers to the latest generation Dura Ace 9200 series. The extra claimed 10% clearance between pad and rotor sure seems to have done the trick. I would assume the Ultegras and 105s would be the same.

    great review- got the s-works a month ago, but agree the difference is marginal at best, and certainly can’t tell from riding! I was curious, how does it hold up with light gravel/ firebombed streets? I love this bike but durability is always in the back of my mind! Also thinking about the new Crux.

      Seems to hold up just fine. I agree Time will tell if the bike is durable, but with a lifetime warranty, I’m not concerned about it. The new Crux is very cool… I wouldn’t mind riding one 😂

      I definitely will once I put some miles on it. Since getting it very late this year, it only has a few hundred on it then it snowed. I will save my thoughts until I a few solid months in it outside.

    the rear hanger bending has also being an issue on mine, bent it twice n 3 months. the fork flex is def a thing, the discs will rub when off the saddle and throw the bike to one side ...wont rub when on the other side, so thats def fork flex. its not bad, its just there.

    I built up a Fact 10r Aethos to go along with my 2022 Scott Foil RC and I can confirm everything you said in your review. My one issue with this bike is that I think purchasing it heavily depends on the type of riding you are doing. If you ride moderate hilly to very hilly rides this bike is equivalent to an aero bike on the flats where the lack of weight and flexy rear end skate up hills, but if you are doing mostly flat fast rides with occasional hills and could only have one bike I much rather have a "light" all around aero bike like the Tarmac. Greta review but I am interested now in 2024 to see more people compare the Aethos to a Tarmac SL 8

    I notice the front disc rub also...sporadically. Love the review. Anyone have an idea where I can get the specialized decal for the top frame? My Aethos Expert did not come with any logos.

    What do you think about the sizing? I tested tarmac sl7 and aethos, both in size 54. I think that aethos is a little bit shorter than tarmac. I also felt more weight on my hands when riding aethos. Both bikes were set the same. Tarmac was perfect fit at my 178cm, but aethos i think would be better in size 56.

      They are almost identical sizing between the two bikes. Check out the Geometry Geeks website to compare the two. You likely felt changes in component fit/sizing. Take a look at the site and let me know what you think.

    Would love a more direct comparison to the sl7 (the two bikes in trying to decide between now that they stopped making the Roubaix Team edition). When you do can you try and keep the wheelset/tire setup the same between both? For example if you have your tarmac at 100psi of course it will feel harsher then a different wheelset at a lower pressure on the aethos

      Also saddles being similar would be useful. Just looking at reviews in one web site where they said the aethos was a comfortable bike and the sl7 was only average vibration dampening. The saddle on the sl7? Really thin racing saddle. Aethos? Mirror saddle. Easy to make the aethos more comfy without having anything to do with the frame

      I don't race but like to push as fast as I can do want speed. Also enjoy week long bike tours (60+ miles a day) and century rides so don't want to feel too beat up.

      @@enki42ea your logic makes complete sense to me… in a perfect world, everything that can be the same should to compare them directly against each other. Swapping small parts here and there usually won’t make a huge different, but wheels/tires/saddle/cranks should be the same to truly feel the way the bike transfers power down.

    Thanks for such a comprehensive report-- particularly from someone has spend a realist amount of mileage. You mention the bike is 16 some lbs but can be reduced to 14lbs depending on the build kit. Can you please provide what the component changes would be required to reach 14lbs on this particular bike?       No problem. There’s a lot of ways to drop a few pounds… budget will determine how extreme you want to go. As it is, it’s already PLENTY light for every day use.

    I enjoyed your review, thanks. For some reason, most Aethos models are heavily discounted where I am, a lot more than other models. For example, almost all the Ultegra and Dura Ace models are 40% off on Specialized website. Some of them are 2022, and some 2023. By comparison, Tarmac and other models have smaller discounts. Any idea why that would be?

      It’s in the verge of a model change I figure… plus everyone is buying the SL8 now, which make the Aethos market even smaller.

    I just rewatched your video and wanted to report my experience with the rival front derailure . I drop the chain on shifts from the small to big ring 1/20 shifts. I have had my shop look at twice but it still does it. It a nuisance but bearable.

      That’s interesting to me. I’ve read a lot about this issue in various forums, and 1/20 shifts seems like an amount too frequent. I had some issues with mine early in, then started slowly tweaking with the limiting screws and have had almost no issues since. It’s annoying, but hopefully the next release will be better.

      @@MitchOnTwoWheels I will start adjusting it myself also..I will be due for a new chain soon. Maybe that will help. I though maybe the position of the rear derailleur would effect dropping the chain, I have seen no correlation.

      Outboard limit screw is too loose if the chain is shifting over the big ring. There is no way around that. If anything, Sram yaw front derailleurs shift so well they tend to overshift if improperly set up. Many bike shops don't know how to adjust a driveline on a bicycle. Good luck. Nothing wrong with the Sram front derailleur be it mechanical or electric. Misadjusted drivelines however are as common as sand at the beach....in fact are in the majority and not the minority of all groupsets.

    Hi Mitch. I want to graduate from my cervelo c3 to a racier bike but concerned about the comfort and harsher ride of a sl7 or other comparable racing bike like the cervelo s5 or very expensive Pinarello dogma. Would this be a good step for someone that is used to riding an endurance bike looking for more performance but does not want to sacrifice some of the comfort and road buzz?

      Yes!! Yes, and more yes!!! However, make sure the geometry suits your needs, as it matches the Marmac SL7 almost exactly.

      @@MitchOnTwoWheelsHi Mitch. After speaking to my dealer he suggests I get the sl7 tarmac pro as I will get more “value” and technology. Also if I decided to sell it I would get good resale. He suggests the sl7 would be fine for the flat roadside am riding on in Florida so comfort is not a major factor. He also said the rival version can be built up with roval cl 2 wheels, power meter and carbon handle bar and it would be about a $1000 less than the pro version. What are your thoughts please?

      As mentioned, both have the same geometry. So you’ll be in similar position on either. The Tarmac is stiffer and more Aero while the Aethos is slightly more comfortable (softer ride). Either way you go, you’ll love both. Never buy a bike for its’ resale. You are always the first priority. Carbon wheels always sweeten any deal however :)

    Hi Mitch great review I was really keen to know what you thought of the SRAM force as I've got the same group set on my 2013 S-works roubaix and don't get me wrong there is a lot to like about it but there is also alot to dislike about it as well. Mine has wicked chain noise like it's way out of tune but I've had a certified SRAM mechanic take a look at it and he says it set up perfectly. I also had quite a few problems with the front derailleur over shifting which I fixed by setting it up with the plastic alignment tool that you can buy . I don't see alot of complaints about the force group set on new bikes so I'm thinking there may be an issue with how it fits to older frame's. I'm glad you're enjoying your bike as specialized do make quality gear.

      Thanks Jeremy--I appreciate your feedback. The Sram Force groups hasn't given me any issues to be honest. Like anything, it has a few things that will need you to keep an eye on, but for the most part, its been fantastic. The front mech gave me some issues at first, but once I set everything up to spec, it was fine for the rest of the year. The chain noise on the groups comes from the cassette itself, not anything else. I have found that the best solution to this is to either spend more money on the Red groups, or listen to a podcast - haha! Hope that helps :)

    Can you explain further on how you bent the derailleur hanger? Just torquing the pedals should not bend it so was there an issue with the bike?

      You are correct. I had a really bad shift under high power that out a slight bend in the mech.

    I like the idea of moving away from proprietary stuff and integrated headsets. However...I have to say I’m not sure what the point of this bike actually is? It’s a climbing bike but it doesn’t have aggressive geometry. A sub 7 kilo cafe bike?

      It’s a non-aero comfortable bike with race geo. Light enough to climb, comfortable enough for long rides. I love it.

    I'm thinking of getting this in the comp version, with rival e-tap, whenn its availableagain. I used to have a tarmac sL2. it got destroyed and I no longer use it. I know it's heavier than the s-works counterparts. but the s-works price tag is a bit to steep for my blood. what do you think of the comp version?

      I think you can’t go wrong… The standard version is already lighter than most frames on the market. It’s truly a wonderful bike.

      I'm finally getting my aethos pro in emerald green on Tuesday 25 April. The special order via specialized dealer did not pan out, and earliest they could offer was end ofJuly. I'm done being a race guy for 10 years and I just love the ride experience now. My other bikes are a roubaix, a giant Trinity and Propel and a Leader 725 fixed. ...your review is my current favorite of this bike and I appreciate the honesty. Is there any new pointers for a new aethos owner that may have surfaced since video release? Any hoo, thank you.

      That’s amazing feedback! I’m still putting mileage on the Aethos… I think I’m around 18K so far on it. I still enjoy it! Make sure you get a spare mech hanger, otherwise you’re going to truly enjoy this bike. It’s such an amazing blend of weight savings, performance, and compliance.

      Thanks. All the frames are the same other than the S-Works, so model doesn’t really matter. The parts just change. However, this is the Pro model.

    Hi Mitch there is consistency in reviews of the Aethos that it's a great bike for climbing but never hear about descending, what's it like? Is the forgiving nature of the frame a problem? New to your channel and like the content.

      Not a problem whatsoever. I would say you feel a lack of aero around 20-25mph as it’s not punching through the wind, but what’s about it. Not a deal breaker.

      I have the Di2 S-Works version and I find it very easy in descents. Much easier than my SL5. Regarding aero, The difference with SL7 is marginal. Indeed, I was competing with a SL7 last year in a 7 km descent without breaking, 74 km/h average speed on the segment. The SL7 was not faster than me.     Sorry to pick your brain once more Mitch. I found a good deal on an Aethos and having a hard time whether I should bite the bullet. I’ve been using my Stigmata as my road bike. Does the Aethos feel that much more comfortable and faster than the Stigmata on road? I notice the Stigmata pretty twitchy on descents. Does the Aethos handle more smooth and define on the descent? Trying to justify if I need to Aethos or not. If I do get it looks like I’ll turn the Stigmata to a full time gravel bike. Thanks for your time man.

      The Aethos is a closet-race bike... It's super fast right out of the box. The two bikes aren't even comparable on the road... It's that big of a difference. The comfort level the bike brings you is insane.... Super compliant, yet allows you to put down power as needed. The climbing will also blow your mind due to the reduced weight. The Stig is a great all around bike, but it's really designed as a gravel / off-road style CX bike, not a dedicated road bike.

      Depends on the ride, but yes, mostly SL7 now that outside is nice. Aethos tends to be for more casual rides or mountain days now. It used to be for everything though.

      Thanks! I’m about 1 inch shorter. Was riding a 58 cm SL6 with a 130 stem. But since the Aethos (according to what data I’ve found) has a shorter top and seat tube, I decided to go with a 61 Aethos. Guess I’ll know when my frame gets built.     I’m enjoying the bike so far th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

    Not trying to be a D. It's just the case that it really took me some time to understand what you were saying. Also, no need to pronounce things perfectly, but it helps if it's closer to correct, and this one isn't THAT hard. It's not roubeau (roo-BOW), it's roubaix (hoo-BEH, same sound as the "be" in better). Hope this helps ;)

    Biggest knock on the Aethos bike isn't the bike itself as much as it is price. People that need disc brakes who don't live in the mountains, don't know how to ride...especially amateurs who ride at more pedestrain speeds and don't paceline at 30mph.
    I wouldn't buy a Atheos because of disc brakes...but moreover, if not needing an aero edge to compete with elite amateurs...the Aethos isn't ridden by pro riders....for $6-8K for just the frameset alone, have a custom Ti frameset made which will be much more robust over time. The Ti bike will be light enough...again the Aethos is not a race bike so competing is off the table.
    The Aethos versus Roubaix comparison you made is a bit obtuse. The Roubaix is a boat anchor of a bike by comparison.
    What is an Aethos really? Its the reimagination of the Tarmac SL3 of 10 years ago with a more fragile layup comprised of higher modulus carbon. Most like the Aethos. In some ways it is a more 'honest' bike than the SL7. Like Tarmacs of old it has a better feel to it than later model Venge and SL7 but no mistake if racing, the aero bikes are faster.

    Did you have to be a bike mechanic to tolerate all the adjustments to your derailers front n back!!! For such an expensive bike that is ridiculous!! I hope your rear derailleur didn’t break on a century ride, you’d be stranded with a $12k bike?!?! That’s terrible 😞 I would have changed out the whole thing for a Shimano ultegra system. I find it hard to believe that this aero lite bike would be comfortable on long rides especially with the very small saddle, I had one n sold it. You have to have very small butt to be able to ride on it. By now you probably put in over $3k just in tweaking the bike with saddle, mechanicals, etc. we’ll good luck with your bike shop cause us home boys can’t afford the Athos, maybe a cheaper Diverge to do it all.

      The adjustments are very easy to play with... Just finicky. I agree you would expect something for robust for the price, but that's not a major concern. I'm 6-3 and 205 lbs, hardly small for the saddle LOL.
