Aethos: The Bike I Never Knew I Wanted!

  • This is a very special Specialized bike. It bucks the trend, defies convention, and seemingly steps back in time. But is this a good thing? My answer is yes!!!
When shopping for a new lightweight and stiff climbing bike, I looked at all the usual suspects. Emonda, Cervelo R5, SuperSix to name a few. But I just couldn't see the value proposition, and I wondered if there was something different out there? Well, I found it!
The Specialized Aethos will no doubt polarise the opinions of cycling buddies and the cycling community at large. But I'm intrigued by what it has to offer, and pretty stoked to have landed one for myself. Here is how I decided I was going to purchase one...

Two years ago I got Aethos Comp from local dealer for some short testing through weekend. I wasn't convinced about the philosophy of this bike, but well... after few kilometres I was immediately hooked. The way this bike handled and transfered power was something else - pure brilliance. Few weeks later I bought my own with little higher spec (Expert model) and it still serves me well as my main bike.

Nice to hear from a fellow Aethos enthusiast! I'm yet to have my first proper ride as I've taken the bike into the shop to have the drive train stripped ready for waxing, but I'm hoping to have it back for a weekend of New Bike Feels. My plan is this will be my weekend bike as this is when most of my hills riding happens.

Hey Martin. There is definitely an element of truth there. I dig the bike. I dont mind being unconventional. But I think the logical part of my brain was still mostly in control!
If the Aethos was also $7k, or wasnt so lightweight, or if it wasnt available in SRAM Rival AXS I probably would have eventually ended up with an Emonda again.

@@podiumphysio657 I know how "it works". But it works also in another way. I bought aCervelo C2 4 or t years ago. And it works allright. But I think it is so a dull bike....No charme what so ever🤪

@@Martin-on2pp Hey Martin. That is a shame. They say we buy on emotion and justify with logic. It would be nice to have both in equal measure. This is the 5th road bike I've owned in 10 years and I think I've been very happy with the price and features of all of these bikes, and they also all "made sense" at the time. At least they did to me!

Well done and a great choice! I'm intending to build an S-Works Aethos later in the year, when the new Aethos bikes and frames arrive here ( according to Specialized Australia ).
I can wholeheartedly and unequivocally recommend the "Creative Climb ' wheel set, which weighs only 946 grams, although your weight may be an issue. You may also consider the "Creative Ultra" set. Either way, I strongly advise you to speak with Michael of "Creative Cycles", who is passionate about what he does and will give you honest, direct advice.
I have the "Climb " variant on my Cervelo Caledonia, with Continental GP 5000 STR tyres and Pirelli TPU tubes, which replaced the Shimano Ultegra, deeper section carbon wheels. With some other changes that I've made with Michael, the Cervelo weighs 6.9 kgs.
    Cheers and happy riding!

Hey Kostas. Thanks for stopping by. I've just installed my pedals and taken "Cassius" around the block for a quick status check. Everything seems to be tickety boo! I've also taken a quick look at the Creative Climb website. Looks like I have about 3 kg of leeway with their standard production rims 😆. But it seems that they are also able to help with extra strength wheels if needed, with very minor weight penalty. Definitely an option worth considering!

Nice review. Bought my Aethos Comp 62 a month ago direct from the Specialized Australia website and delivered through a local dealer (Perth). Fantastic service from Specialized and even better from the local dealer (Ride Advice in CBD). They did a fitting and swapped out the stem for a shorter 100mm spec. From order to riding in

Yes I go the bike very quickly also, but then had to wait 2 more weeks for the 160mm cranks I wanted. Definitely a bargain at the price you mention, and I guess in run out before a new model comes out mid year??

@@podiumphysio657it has been a wild ride of a community. It started when some guy named jeffyfansml99 (someone later revealed to be slingmingo, someone who has been widely disliked across the fnf community) decided to bring a bunch of people together and make an fnf mod somewhat based on SMLwiki (a horror thing (interactive horror? i dont know) which is itself based on SML) and other sml creepypastas. One of the first pieces of content related to aethos was someone releasing a snippet as an “unknown churgney song”, which churgney didnt actually make, it was an imitation of his music style (churgney gurgney is an FNF community member probably most well known for making Silly Billy, which popularized the songs with banger lyric sections subgenre). Jeffy’s Endless Aethos was then released with only the first main song, Aethos. Development went smoothly until jeffyfan shared a leak (which someone posted on soundcloud) of the mod. Jeffyfan didnt realize this, but the mobile browser for soundcloud shows the people that shared the song you’re listening to. This caused people to see that jeffyfan shared it as slingmingo, leading to him being “exposed” as sling (the devs actually knew from the beginning) and kicked off of the aethos team. Shortly afterwards, aethos was cancelled and it’s content (excluding shucks which was moved to vs jeffy) was moved to funks logan, which was cancelled due to sling deleting the server. Things slowed for a while (excluding the fanmade stuff people made and sling shitposting on the jeffyfan account) until sling apologized (many people believe it was disingenuous, i personally am not sure). Shortly after this, aethos was revived. It has already been in drama due to someone known as madman halloween (also widely hated across the fnf community) working on the mod (madman is luckily no longer on the aethos team). “what about shucks?” well, ezzythecat (the creator of shucks) held a singing contest for people to sing new shucks lyrics. Someone named redtv won, and his lyrics got in v2. Unfortunately, due to ezzy not wanting to be associated with shucks anymore and the lyrics being leaked.
