      This method is really quick but looks like it wastes a lot more braid on the tag end. You also need really thick leader for it to hold out like that.
      The fg knot is also really good for light line for freshwater and ultralight applications. I have it tied with 6lb braid to 4lb mono on my trout/panfish rod right now, and the only way to tie it is with the pinky method, just because the line is so floppy and unmanageable

    When I'm trying to tie a thin knot I finish the wraps, half hitch, tighten, 6 loop lock knot, cut your leader material an 8th of an inch and heat it up right after roll your fingers in the hot leader. It don't hurt too bad you get used to it. You want the tag end to melt into the top of the knot but be very careful. I pinch and use my nails as a heat shield. Then cut the braid and do the same with that making sure you just get that to a ball point. I've tried every single way and for me this knot is as much about strength as it is about being thin and this is the way to get that really really thin knot that only barely brushes the top guide. I've strength tested it and if done right between this and the rizzuto The line breaks in the middle. I'm not downing the rizzuto finish I just think this way is so much better.

    Most people do the half hitches then rizzuto. But it seems the rizzuto is enough from your demonstration.

    • @davidyang577
      @davidyang577 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why dont you just try to learn the FG and do a break test yourself. Lol..
      For braid connecting to mono, the FG is 40-50% stronger than most knots available that's why we are all trying to perfect the FG smart guy. This guy's FG is actually even better than the normal FG you see that's why we are trying to learn it.
      It's actually really easy and takes under one minute if practice and get it right.
      Good luck

    • @walkerrivers1549
      @walkerrivers1549 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidyang577 I agree. What I have noticed though is that with thin braid and thin mono/fluoro it is not at all as easy to tie an FG. Also an Alberto is plenty strong when using light line for smaller fish. With heavier, thicker line/leader targeting larger fish and not focusing on reel drag so much an FG shines. I think it is important to use both knots as needed as well as incorporating drag and back reeling (when/if applicable).
      The strength tests I have seen don't really account for these things. Everyone just wants the strongest knot even if it isn't the best knot for certain applications.
      I really like the method shown in this video but it makes for a slight lump in the knot. This can create plenty of issues depending on how many guides a knot goes through in addition to the guide material. Also with improperly spaced guides on a spinning rod this small lump can cause an issue for the knot as well as the angler. The more standardized FG is pretty much a clean line so it can be better in some ways.
      If OP doesn't want to take a few minutes and learn different knots that is his/her choice. But an Alberto is a great knot, like the FG, however there are many factors to consider aside from raw strength sometimes.

    • @davidyang577
      @davidyang577 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@walkerrivers1549knots suit to the situation, and I didn't say other knots wasn't good, I just said there's a reason why this guy is promoting the FG knot.
      But in regards to the finish on FG, there shouldnt be lump on the finish unless not done correctly. Whether it's Rizzuto or half hitches as you would understand base on the type of knots. Good luck

    I can't get my head around why the second set of wrappings on the rizzuto works. Surely it would just unravel when you pull it. The first set is basically a uni knot, but the second is just wraps.

    • @ecksdog
      @ecksdog 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve watched most FG videos on TH-cam. Here’s my take, once the FG knot and 2 half hitches are done and you pull and tension the knot it’s basically done. All of the stuff tied after that like several more hitches or the rizzuto finish only help to keep the tag end from backing out.

    • @benprice3719
      @benprice3719 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ecksdog I get that. It's just to lock off the fg and tidy up the tag end. But I don't think the second set of wraps on the rizzuto do anything. All you're doing is wrapping the loop around the main line, so it would just unwrap as you pull it through. It's really only the first 5 wraps that work like a uni knot to tie off the tag end.

      Do you mean use a Chinese finger trap into the hollow core? If so in my experience JB hollow braid will splice up to its own breaking strain but anything thicker tends to be too big to thread.

    Very risky knot. When doing the finishing knot… the ‘entanglement’ is not always consistent for a secure knot. U may pull how hard with your hands the knot remains intact. When fishing after repeated casting, the knot may unravel- your leader and lure will slip away… i rather stay with the conventional finishing for fg knot- more secure

    It would be much easier to replicate what you are doing if you recorded from your eyesight point of view. I get the basics but hard to translate into action viewing from opposite point of view.
