    Flouro breaks at the knot if you don't fold the braided loop back over the first twist. It cuts the flouro. Easy fix. Check out Toit video on surgeons testing.

    I use 36 wraps on the FG knot and have never had it break. We recently had the jig get stuck on hard bottom with 80 pound braid and could not break it off. After repeated attempts and pulling with the boat using different directions we pulled a piece of rock off the bottom. I think if the FG knot is tied correctly it will stand up to the PR knot.

      As evidenced by the first fog knot he tied you don’t need to wrap the knot anywhere close to 36 times to achieve 99% knot strength. The key is tying the knot properly. Based on your comment 36 wraps has been successful for you and since so much of fishing (and everything in life) is about confidence, 36 sounds like a good number for ya.

    I'm sending this note to several fishing TH-cam channels for your consideration. I'm a knot guy. I'm old but still learning. I just ordered a bobbin for a PR knot and was watching your videos regarding knot strength. I've never seen any videos that cover knot strength mention one of the most important factors when fighting fish, and it plays in the selection of a knot to use. That factor is reel drag. I fish in-shore almost exclusively anymore. Lighter lines and leaders, many sources of abrasion, fish with razor-sharp gill covers and teeth, etc., all have to be dealt with. The spinning reels I use are usually in the 2000-4000 weight range. From hands-on tests, I found that my reels' drags top out at about 15 pounds and sometimes less, no matter what the manufacturers say. Deep sea reels I've used, top that, of course. I watch many tests of knot strength and wonder why fishermen get excited when knot strength far exceeds the maximum drag their reels can hold.
    Don't get me wrong, I like a strong knot, however, time to tie those fancy knots is not worth the frustration from sweaty hands, pitching boats, missing fish action, etc. just to tie the latest and greatest. I ordered the PR bobbin because it seems pretty much idiot proof and fast enough to justify its use. I also like the size of the knot for going through the line guides a few hundred times a day from casting lures. Maybe in the future acknowledge the entire system that holds the fish, i.e.; reel drag to line to knot to leader to terminal knot. They all play a role.

      The FG and PR are not knots that you tie on a boat. They are tied before fishing so that your leader to braid connections doesn't break. Your rig will break at the sinker loop or the rig/ hook but you will still have your 15 or 20 feet of leader to rig up again and normally a fish will not break you off.

    I have tried the FG knot a few times and it has a great margin for error in tying it properly. PR bobbin will ensure perfect ties each time and really it seems faster with the bobbin for PR vs manually tying the FG. A lot of die hards out there for FG though and that's fine for them! Glad I just ordered a bobbin.

    The guy that tied the FG did a great job and it is the best demonstration I have seen on TH-cam. It is also exactly how I tie it, except I liked the way you did the Rizzuto finish. I also tied a Rizzuto also, but never wound it backwards and never do more than 4 wraps. I always test my knots with as hard of pull as I can to make sure it is tied properly. I also find it odd that ever other test I have seen between the PR and FG, the FG won hands down.

      Each knot should be tied as it was invented at its desired number of wraps and half hitches and knot length to get to the maximum breaking strength. What was demonstrated here was two people's own take on these excellent knots. They can preform exactly the same depending on the wind direction.

    • @Gstar5150
      @Gstar5150 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@georgehenry7350LoL what does wind direction have to do with knot strength

    • @Gstar5150
      @Gstar5150 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@georgehenry7350 also even the same knot has a different amount of wraps depending on the line, like a double uni with 6lb mono only takes 2 sets of 4-5 wraps, but say your tying 6lb mono onto 10 lb braid, your gonna want to make more wraps on the braid end usually about 8-10 wraps, that's what Salt Strong taught me and as far as I'm concerned he's the King of fishing knots. Sometimes too many wraps will actually cause too much stress in the knot itself so in most cases it's actually better to use the least amount of wraps possible especially on thicker line. I can tie a triple surgeon on 6lb but on 20lb there's just no damn way cause it's nearly impossible to cinch correctly so I'll go with a double on 20lb.

Try tying either of these knots using 10-15 lb. braid and a 6-10 lb. fluoro leader when you are in a bass boat in a 15-20 wind. Damn near impossible to do.

  • @ArthriticAngler

    My take, the 1/2 hitches with the PR are in non critical part. With the FG, it is very easy to scrape off coatings when you pull down on the locking wraps, weakening your mainline. Holiday Inn and bourbon informed. Much more than 20 and you can’t get an FG to tighten smoothly

  • @Jake-ky9ed

    That FG needed more wraps. Also, I wonder if the fact that the tag end of the flouro wasn't burned so it would mushroom had to do with the fact that the braid was slipping off? That mushroom would stop it from moving at all

    The drag maxed out on say an Accurate 500N is max 25lbs locked down, so any knot that holds over that amount of drag will do the job. I have to say you guys tied the FG knot not as good as the PR knot. Both are great knots and will hold so longs as the max drag is less than the breaking strength and that goes for any knot.

    • @RikkiTikkiTavi290

      i think both PR and FG (a little less) are a waste of good leader material and braided main line. if i have time to do my knots at home, i use the fg or a combo of a bimini twist on the main line (even a spider hitch will do) to a yucatan knot, both have yet to fail me in a regular day to day situation. if i have to change my leader on the boat for any given reason, i even go to a uni to uni and call it a day.. even that knot combo has never failed me. i believe that the conection to the jig is more critical, because i have lost fish to poor quality solid rings that are sharp like a washer (im talking to you, williamson lures) and to knots that break or slip (that's on me)

    • @DanTheFireman

      @@gabrielduarte3904 I'm with you Gabriel, my breaks never happen at the FG but rather at the terminal connection. The thicker the loop you're tying to the more area that stress is distributed over. I also have a beef, but with VMC ball bearing swivels. I lost two good fish in Colombia a few months ago before I noticed one of the loops wasn't welded - never had a cheapo regular swivel let me down.

    The fluoro breaking at 40lb and it being listed at 40lb fluoromis NOT the line breaking at the strength of the fluoro!! Especially in the USA they market almost all fishing line way under what the actual break strength is. 40lb fluoro likely has a breaknstrength of 50-60lb actual break strength. Same goes for braid. This has been tested litterally 10px online. Take power pro 40lb and it breaks around 60lb. So none of your knots actually broken at the real line strength of the knit.
    What the pr knot gets you is more even tension and surface area between the leader and braid. Try counting the number of wraps you did with that bobbin. It's like 50 plus the 20 you did by hand on tge initial wrap. So 70 wraps of braid over the fluoro. The fg knot strength is all about the number of wraps to spread the tension AND the consistency of tension and how you tighten the line. Also half hitching over just the braid cuts into the braid as the knot is stretched and ends up breaking. If you keep tge mono in there it tends not to cut into itself and cut thru the braid.

    like this video... However it was a bit lop sided. I do not know anyone that would put so few hitches in an FG. The lighter the line the more hitches you do. For 30# I would have done a minimum of 25 to 30 per side. The PR knot works on the same principal. So to compare the two you should have roughly the same length knot. I have used both and have yet to have either one fail at the knot. In all cases the knot at my jig fails. If I am at home, I will use the PR. When I am out on the boat, the FG gets tied, no tools and takes 90 seconds to tie. Either way both are solid knots.

This keeps me from wasting a lot of line. When I tie the PR knot all I do is wrap around 25 times around in a down direction on the leader and 25 times in a opposite up direction and also finish it off with a Rizzo then I use a lighter to burn a mushroom on the leader for both knots. @@RikkiTikkiTavi290 if you trim the leader after the rizzuto finish you would have the blunt end of the leader sticking out at the very end. The Rizzuto finish is supposed to provide a “ramp” so the end of the leader doesnt get stuck moving through the guides. At least thats what ive seen.

      @@bido8176I've learned the FG with Rizzuto by watching the Mornintide guys, specifically Briggsy's video on how to tie it. His/their version is with the Rizutto over the top of the mono with the mono trimmed very tight. This is the way I tie it and it has never once failed me, whereas every other variation I've tried has failed at least once. I think the Aussies know their stuff for GT fishing. It does take practice to get perfect but its worth it to me, and you can change it a bit to have the tag covered by wraps like you said if need be. To me the version in the video just keeps the wraps from coming off, doesn't actually add knot strength. I guaruntee that my FG+R would beat that PR knot.

      @bido8176 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RikkiTikkiTavi290 I will watch those videos. I Agree. Once the knot is tied and tightened the finish whether the Rizzuto is done over the mono and then cut or over the mono after its cut is just for appearance and how smooth the “ramp” is through the guides. The strength of the knot is in the wraps not the finish, whether it is PR or FG. I have done FG with Rizzuto finish where there is no tag end shown at all. Its a smooth seamless ramp with the tag end completely buried. Its nice 👍🏻

    FG 100%. Ive used a ton of knots in the gulf. Off the bank on 200-300lb goliaths. 8ft sharks, and 4 ft span stingrays....The FG has never failed. I only use 22 wraps and 4 half hitchs. That PR tool and casting through the eyes, tying at night....Not impressed.

    Bimini to huffnagle, no tools needed and it won't break at the knot ever. Only downside is it is bulkier than pr or the fg.

    I don't know the PR knot seems a little bulkier than the FG knot and I've still heard of people catching 700+lb grouper with 80lb line with the same knot so I think I'll stick with it. It's also kinda lame that you literally need a tool to tie a PR Knot.

    how to tie FG knot & PR Knot the Hardest way possible :>

  • @hunterwhittaker9291
    @hunterwhittaker9291 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I make my knot 5-6 inches long, and I do 3 half hitch knots to hold the coils down, then I do a fisherman's knot on top of them to make it never give. Then to make it a true 100% knot, I use a lighter on the mono leader until it gets liquid then quinch it with a wet finger so it makes it bulged so it can never come undone ever. Then finally I use a lighter on the braid tag end too.

    There is simple variant on the PR knot that makes the knot to break always over 100% and almost never on the knot itself. the trick is to make the first few turns of the braid around the monofilament (min 3:30 to 3:47, the first part of the knot) more spaced apart (about 1/3 inch). Then come back tight as you did. Please try it and let me know if the knot is stronger that way. Maybe there is content for another knot video.

    I use both knots, depending on what I’m fishing for. FG when casting and retrieving, especially through micro guides. Never had a failure. I use the PR knot for heavy braid to heavy leader when LBSF and going through a roller tip guide. Both knots, obviously, work on the finger cuff principle, (the tighter it’s pulled the tighter the grip ). And this is a serious question, but with either knot digging into the flouro or mono by design, does that weaken the leader material some?

    • @JohnnyJigsTV
      @JohnnyJigsTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the knot digging into the flouro or mono, absolutely it WEAKENS the leader material, not by alot, but some.
