Try sliding it down instead of pulling straight, that way it minimize leader rubbing with whatever you are tying it to.

For lures I like to use a Lockweld stainless thread to attach my terminal quick release swivel to all my lures.
Seven strands of stainless encased in nylon helps against toothy fish.
