The beginning of the video brought on a wave of nostalgia for me. I come from a working-class family, and as a kid in the '80s, my parents bought my brother and me a Nintendo clone-not the original console. Looking back, I realize the effort they must have put into getting us that, along with the couple of games they managed to buy. It’s something that sticks with me, and that video just reminded me of those times. Greetings from Spain

Relatable story. We didn’t have it easy on a financial level either, so videogames were always something special whenever my parents managed to gift them to us (I shared all my gaming related stuff with my two siblings).

Wow that ending...who's cutting onions at this ungodly hour?!?!
I am an 80s child, this video really got to me. I didn't have an aunt Brenda growing but my dear mom somehow made sure I had at least one nice toy every xmas or birthday. I honestly have no idea how she did it, we were immigrants living in the projects "eating spaghetti with cut up hotdogs" poor. I swore once I became an adult with money I'd be the cool uncle to my cousin's children. It's been such a blast introducing them to all the things I loved as a kid, especially old video games (and spaghetti with hotdogs which has been an unexpected hit with them).
Thank you for this nostalgia piece, sometimes I catch myself daydreaming I'm back in that small apartment in the projects with the popcorn ceiling and itchy beige carpet playing with my NES on a wooden TV the size of a VW Beetle, the sounds of Mario mixing with the smell of lavender floor cleaner and the soft humming of my mother while she cleans the kitchen.

I lost my job in late 2022, and I had to move my family across country from BC to Ontario (I'm also in my forties and live in my mom's basement). But here's the thing: Now that you put it out there, it's probably time to get the courage to take your life to the next level - if you want to. Use your amazing talents to get a great job and get your own apartment. It's an amazing feeling. I did it and so can you! The longer you stay, the more it becomes a trap. I'll be the dad and give you this advice: start saving your money instead of buying endless retro toys. You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish if you stay focused! I'm not down on your life choices. I'm just saying that if it bothers you, decide to change it!

I built this exact setup a few months ago. Its been my go-to way to wind down after a long day. And my kid loves it with the 8bitdo arcade stick.

Thank you for sharing. A lot of the things you said are true to so many of us. Sometimes we need our retro setups to bring back our childhood and let go of all the stresses of being grown up. Thank you.

I had something similar happen to me. After highschool I spent my years chasing parties, drugs, and women. I lost my interest in drawing and playing games. I would spend 20 years doing all that until eventually my brain kind of had enough. Like a switch came on and I pushed everything and everyone away. It's been 4 years since and I feel like I detoxed from everyone and everything. Now I am slowly getting back into who I use to be.

oh Dweeb... The NES was also my first console, and Super Mario Bros was difficult for a child my age. Remember it took me years to finish it, but became a very good player in the process. Those level 8 courses were long, fast, and challenging. Nice memories. ❤

Beautiful and touching video. I have way more retro gaming consoles than I need but I still marvel at each one of them, remembering the times when I played those games on the real consoles I couldn’t afford. From Bittboy to Odin 2, they all bring a different experience and window into those times when gameplay was king by necessity. All of this would be lost for most of us if it wasn’t for those cheap emulation devices we can buy today. Continue to be yourself, fellow canadian dweeb!

@@TechDweebwould love to see a “gift tree” sort of thing setup where everyone in this community would commit to setting up one of their (cough cough) less used consoles and donating it as a gift to a kid/family in need this XMas

True words TDweeb. When I went to college & worked at the same time, pressure got intense at times. That's when my wife would look me in the eye & say "take 30min & play a game" even if there was no time. She knew when I was about to pop.
When we had a baby, though, those breaks went the way of the dodo, & she was even more stressed than me. Not having family near by to help was a stupid decision but at the same time, necessary for both our careers. We are doing better now.

Beautiful retro gaming story. It's awesome how your aunt and mother noticed your passion which helped you to struggle with problems. Love is usually hidden under some day-to-day gestures. This is why not everyone sees it.

I grew in a third world country. My first experience with Nintendo is through a famicom system and later a bootleg system in Polystation(an Nes clone that looked like a Playstation)
I wanted an Analogue mega sg. But that's impossible now. So I settled with my trusty Retroid pocket.

Remembering the many chapters of life by the games you were playing at the time, so relatable.
One of the best things you can do as an adult is be the person that your kid self needed at the time. I feel like you touched on that sort of theme here, taking care of and healing the inner child.
Great video as always, mister Dweeb. Thank you for sharing.

Love this video. I got my first NES from my aunt snd uncle too. It was their old one. I still remember going through the old cardboard box in their living room. Definitely sparked my love of gaming.
I also just put together a Pi4 for my living room tv. It's such a fun time to have all those games right there.
