I'm an IT guy by trade, I watch a TON of tech stuff, gaming stuff, retro stuff, etc. NO ONE presents with more heart than you do, Sir. The sincerity of your production coupled with the brilliant and unique production values you incorporate? Amazing. Absolutely great stuff.
Man, your story made me cry, I wasn't expecting that, I also think that we all are kids inside, and no matter what, we can still enjoy those little things that made us happy even if the years have passed. 😽😽😽
I'll never forget that moment. I try to do the same for other people in my life when I can, and I can trace it all back to that moment when someone did it for me as a little Dweeb.
Come here for the Tech and Handhelds, stayed for the heartwarming words and lovely art of TechDweeb. Man, i laughed with tears in my eyes.. so much sounds so familiar.. please stay as you are!
Man, you captured everything an adult gamers looks for in their midlife years...THANKS ! That feeling when you're instantly taken back, even for a second, to that happy place when you played your favorite game, home alone faking being sick...all triggered by a couple of tunes from an old game...these moments are getting really scarce and hard to come by but retro games do that for us...i'm not crying !!! just something in my eye...
@TechDweeb- You truly have a gift for storytelling. You transported a lot of us back to our childhoods. Not ashamed to admit I cried. God bless your Aunt Brenda! We have so much in common. Family is everything. Thank you for this beautiful reminder.
I was in tears watching this. My Uncle kept me updated with computers and Nintendos after my mom died when I was 6. This video gave me a new perspective on why. I sent him a text thanking him, and telling him how much I love him today. Thank you Dweeb for opening this feeling for me.
The beginning of the video brought on a wave of nostalgia for me. I come from a working-class family, and as a kid in the '80s, my parents bought my brother and me a Nintendo clone-not the original console. Looking back, I realize the effort they must have put into getting us that, along with the couple of games they managed to buy. It’s something that sticks with me, and that video just reminded me of those times. Greetings from Spain
Relatable story. We didn’t have it easy on a financial level either, so videogames were always something special whenever my parents managed to gift them to us (I shared all my gaming related stuff with my two siblings). Now I've been hoarding Switch games for my 4 y.o. nephew that I found for great prices. I hope they will make him as happy as my childhood games made me happy.
I totally dig this type of retro game setup. My dream is to have a big 36" Sony Trinitron, and a bunch of mini consoles under it modded to the brim with any game I'd want for each. Wireless controllers if possible too. Maybe some bean bag chairs. That'd be the life
@@TechDweeb she was. She did it all on her own for me and my little brother. 80's Thatcher run Scotland was shit for single parents. Especially if they chose to work. I actually got goosebumps at the end when lil Dweeb found his NES... Reminded me of when I got my Atari 2600. That oh so brief moment of dumbstruck wonder before the joy explosion. Ahhhh, good times.
Your first video I saw was your paper puppet game boy one. I was instantly charmed. This again has me feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Someone was cutting onions back then too… weird. But seriously, thank you! It must be a common thing to go through because I related almost word for word with your puppet story. The hard working mom. The absent dad. My Aunt got me my Nintendo. But her name is Andrea. I can pinpoint every hard time in my life to a Zelda I was playing to get me through it. There’s just so many examples where I felt like that little paper dweeb and grown up dweeb. Thanks for making these ❤
As a former nerd (still nerd in spirit, but without the insecurity), I understand the turning inwards that techdweeb went through. I'm glad he's willing to share it with us and warming hearts along the way.
Wow that ending...who's cutting onions at this ungodly hour?!?! I am an 80s child, this video really got to me. I didn't have an aunt Brenda growing but my dear mom somehow made sure I had at least one nice toy every xmas or birthday. I honestly have no idea how she did it, we were immigrants living in the projects "eating spaghetti with cut up hotdogs" poor. I swore once I became an adult with money I'd be the cool uncle to my cousin's children. It's been such a blast introducing them to all the things I loved as a kid, especially old video games (and spaghetti with hotdogs which has been an unexpected hit with them). Thank you for this nostalgia piece, sometimes I catch myself daydreaming I'm back in that small apartment in the projects with the popcorn ceiling and itchy beige carpet playing with my NES on a wooden TV the size of a VW Beetle, the sounds of Mario mixing with the smell of lavender floor cleaner and the soft humming of my mother while she cleans the kitchen.
I think I'm stuck in that mid-life crisis moment as we speak. I lost my job in late 2022, and I had to move my family across country from BC to Ontario (I'm also in my forties and live in my mom's basement). I still haven't found work, and I can't seem to enjoy any game in my library. I just sit and stare at my games all day, but never actually play anything. Look forward to finding my inner child again.
well, whatever you do, do not sell them, that's another road long traveled, with regret. just pop one in and let it ride... that is what TechDweeb is talking about...
This is the kind of video that will live on for generations, long past the days that we'll be here. I think it will help people then just as it does now. Thanks TD.
You go beyond gaming, you've got to our feelings, the source of why we play, most of us have similar memories, of when life was easier, happier. Thanks Dweeb.
I’m crying at that wholesome ending. My aunt also gave me my first video game when I was really young, it was GTA for the gameboy color. Thank you to all the cool aunts out there!
Like you Dweeb, my childhood memories are filled with video games, and also like you, the NES was the console that I connected the most with. My Parents surprised me with an NES one day and it's been a cornerstone of my life ever since. I'm in my 30's now, but playing on my NES makes me feel like a kid again.
That was one of your best episodes because you shared a lot of personal stuff. I'm in my 50's & I know what you mean about leaning on retro games for that safe place. Thanks for sharing.
Great video, will be rewatching this one and maybe getting that retropi set up too. Thanks for all your hard work in this space, can definitely relate to everything you've said about retro gaming and nostalgia 😊
This one hit home. I feel your pain that life doesn't feel as rich as it did in the 90s. I try to reclaim that feeling with retro but can't quite there either. I guess that feeling is long gone.
Aw. Glad you were able to stitch this video together. Most of us can relate quite a bit to this. I grew up in the Detroit area. I'm a Gen X'er. Very similar story. But here's the thing: Now that you put it out there, it's probably time to get the courage to take your life to the next level - if you want to. Use your amazing talents to get a great job and get your own apartment. It's an amazing feeling. I did it and so can you! The longer you stay, the more it becomes a trap. I'll be the dad and give you this advice: start saving your money instead of buying endless retro toys. You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish if you stay focused! I'm not down on your life choices. I'm just saying that if it bothers you, decide to change it!
Tech Dweeb: Crisis Squirrel Sounds like an epic movie/game.

Hmm, I had to double check that the Pi5 still supports composite video output. I guess you used the HDMI converter because the Commodore monitor supports S-Video. (Aww, that ending by the way. You have a talent in sewing these personal stories into your reviews.)
The end made me tear up too. I was given an original GameBoy for Christmas at 12 years old and itme cry and felt like I didn`t deserve but it just made me happy.
I remember my nes like it was yesterday.....and biking 60 mins to rent games for 2 days..glad aunt Brenda was so awesome and special - this one is right in the feels Dweeb
This is, hands down, my retro video of the year. You have such an incredible way of telling stories and helping us to connect with the child in all of us. This really hit me directly in the feels man. Well done! Thank you for all your videos, your wild imagination, your humour and your ability to ignite the nostalgia inside our dweeb hearts. Never change, you're awesome.
I hadn't thought about it that way, but I think I'm going through my own midlife crisis without realizing it. Gaming was always my escape too. From bullies, from not having much, never going on vacations etc. But lately, when I really think about it, more like the past 5 or more years, games hasn't satisfied me anymore. Idk how to get back to that place where they heal me inside out. Your mom reminds me of mine, she was very similar. You have a wonderful aunt too. Touching story. I hope I can rediscover my love of games.
I listen to these videos during my morning commute and your piece about burning out and trying to escape from the real world really spoke to me. I hadn’t played retro games in probably 10-15 years but that’s what brought me back. Thanks for talking about it
The storytelling is just on a totally different level. So much heart, so much wit, and still delivering solid information…Dweeb you are something special.
Thank you for sharing. A lot of the things you said are true to so many of us. Sometimes we need our retro setups to bring back our childhood and let go of all the stresses of being grown up. Thank you.
I had something similar happen to me. After highschool I spent my years chasing parties, drugs, and women. I lost my interest in drawing and playing games. I would spend 20 years doing all that until eventually my brain kind of had enough. Like a switch came on and I pushed everything and everyone away. It's been 4 years since and I feel like I detoxed from everyone and everything. Now I am slowly getting back into who I use to be.
oh Dweeb... The NES was also my first console, and Super Mario Bros was difficult for a child my age. Remember it took me years to finish it, but became a very good player in the process. Those level 8 courses were long, fast, and challenging. Nice memories. ❤
Beautiful and touching video. I have way more retro gaming consoles than I need but I still marvel at each one of them, remembering the times when I played those games on the real consoles I couldn’t afford. From Bittboy to Odin 2, they all bring a different experience and window into those times when gameplay was king by necessity. All of this would be lost for most of us if it wasn’t for those cheap emulation devices we can buy today. Continue to be yourself, fellow canadian dweeb!
@@TechDweebwould love to see a “gift tree” sort of thing setup where everyone in this community would commit to setting up one of their (cough cough) less used consoles and donating it as a gift to a kid/family in need this XMas
True words TDweeb. When I went to college & worked at the same time, pressure got intense at times. That's when my wife would look me in the eye & say "take 30min & play a game" even if there was no time. She knew when I was about to pop. When we had a baby, though, those breaks went the way of the dodo, & she was even more stressed than me. Not having family near by to help was a stupid decision but at the same time, necessary for both our careers. We are doing better now.
Beautiful retro gaming story. It's awesome how your aunt and mother noticed your passion which helped you to struggle with problems. Love is usually hidden under some day-to-day gestures. This is why not everyone sees it.
I grew in a third world country. My first experience with Nintendo is through a famicom system and later a bootleg system in Polystation(an Nes clone that looked like a Playstation) I wanted an Analogue mega sg. But that's impossible now. So I settled with my trusty Retroid pocket.
Remembering the many chapters of life by the games you were playing at the time, so relatable. One of the best things you can do as an adult is be the person that your kid self needed at the time. I feel like you touched on that sort of theme here, taking care of and healing the inner child. Great video as always, mister Dweeb. Thank you for sharing.
Great Storytelling here, Dweeb! I have the same Setup with the Pi5 and this case since March, added a 1TB SSK M2 via USB and the latest batocera build, hand-optimized.
Love this video. I got my first NES from my aunt snd uncle too. It was their old one. I still remember going through the old cardboard box in their living room. Definitely sparked my love of gaming. I also just put together a Pi4 for my living room tv. It's such a fun time to have all those games right there.

@@TechDweebwould love to see a “gift tree” sort of thing setup where everyone in this community would commit to setting up one of their (cough cough) less used consoles and donating it as a gift to a kid/family in need this XMas
We love you Dweeb. Please never stop, and never change. To Aunt Brenda… we all love you as well.
Thanks aunt Brenda 😊
It makes me cry seriously 😢
Beautiful retro gaming story. It's awesome how your aunt and mother noticed your passion which helped you to struggle with problems. Love is usually hidden under some day-to-day gestures. This is why not everyone sees it.
I grew in a third world country. My first experience with Nintendo is through a famicom system and later a bootleg system in Polystation(an Nes clone that looked like a Playstation)
I wanted an Analogue mega sg.
I would do one of these with an SNES or a PSOne case for the nostalgia vibes
Man that ending was both wholesome and hit hard.
I rarely comment on anything on TH-cam, but this video made me shed a man's tear
Glad to hear I got you to shed a comment
