"Rent instead of buying them..." That's the professional advice, that would save many newbies so much trouble. I loved the projects you filmed and your review ... :-)
Just finished watching the Dramamine doc... So well done! It weirdly kinda got me emotional at the end. Great job creating a story around something so odd but kept me hooked the whole time! Your the first person iv seen that uses the Mavo consistently. I feel like its a better and cheaper komodo X.
Great video. Really appreciated this insight and effort put into this piece. We have the RED K-X and the Laowa S35 Ranges look like a great option for us.
I had no idea these lenses were coming out. Just started looking for a parfocal, lightweight zoom lens in this focal range. Perfect timing and I'll pick up the 17-50 first to test on production when it's out.
Great review, and thank you for taking us into real usage of these lenses. They really are impressive, in temrs of performance and value-for-money. What is impressive too, the way you pronounce "Angénieux"... so funny. You are good at focusing and filming, no doubt. But when it comes to French words/names, it's a different story ! lol PS : one tip.. in French, about 99.9% final letters are mute and never get heard.
I find it a little odd you didn't compare this to the DZO pictors at all because that's easily the most direct competitor to the rangers. Not an actually real life comparison, but just from the hypothetical of if you're shopping for budget cine zooms right now the DZO has by fast the most popular set. If the 17-50mm is in the same price point as the DZO 20-55 it's a much better choice. I'm never wide enough at 20mm on S35; but I rarely need to be at 55mm. That trade off is so worth.
From what Laowa have said so far, these will be $1,999 USD each. And without direct comparison of footage, right off the bat these will be much lighter and compact than the Pictors. The weight savings will be significant for a particular group of shooters.
I would love to grab a set of cine lenses but they aren’t really conducive to what I shoot at the moment. I still operate in the photo world, but looking to transition. I would love to get to the point where I am shopping around for a set. All of that to say, it’s always great watching what other creators are using, how they are using, and tips and pointers based on experience. I don’t have any specific questions, just interested in what you’re creating. Looking out for the next one, stay awesome!
Just saying, for less than $200 you can pick up a vintage parfocal, constant aperture (f/3.5)internal zoom (35-70mm)and adapter with that 70’s character, add gears and you can rock & roll.
Prices have gone waaay up. None of these lenses are hidden anymore. Lucky if you can find them at that price but in certain markets very very unlikely.
It’s true, he didn’t get to keep the lenses. I got them now 😂 Great video dude. Hope the move/settling in is going well. We going through the same lol.
My take as a videographer is simply that a hobbyist would not benefit from any cinema lens, much less a cinema zoom. Same way a hobbyist wouldn’t benefit from a box style cinema camera or a more professional video body, you have got to consider price to performance and overall value, in which case, the markup on video gear is insane, and if you’re not in that percentage of people that would benefit greatly from the design choices available in them, then don’t buy them. Get some old slr glass if you need a more consistent manual focus experience or find bodies/lenses that allow for linear focus.
I was thinking about getting these but it doesn't look like their EF mount will fit on my C70's EF adapter. I could swap to a PL adapter but there are times I need the EF glass for autofocusing.
I believe that we need to invest gears to a certain extend that we can achieve our vision or style through those gears and learn enough expeirence to move on to similar but more professional gears. As a film student and indie filmmaker, I discover that the cost to rent gears and study them (you need time to understand and get familiar) will be equally the amount of spenting them on some properly good gears (bmpcc4k, xh2s with cage, focus pro, ninja v, vmount, rig gears, and some cheap lighting), but we do need more experience and practice to either demostrate our vision & be able to use more expensive and profesional gears on set properly. To be honest, unless you are at USC NYU or Emerson, most schools don't even have same level gears as something i described as proper gears. Thus, I believe that for people who truly need to do something, they can invest proper gears to the extend that they can gain experience and finish portfolios, they can then move on to rent big gears without wasting too much time and money on learning how thouse workflows are. Plus these controlled, proper investments will allow you to freely use them to make more personal projects without cost aswell
Based on my logic, investing a s35 budget cine zoom is a great investments, require less hassel, can do more trick, less lenses to carry, price is controlled, more suited for small prodcutions & run and gun, can learn how to work with proper cine zooms
I picked up a Fujinon MK 18-55 t2.9 for my Komodo a month or so back. FANTASTIC lens for the money. I got a great deal on mine... Had that not of been the case, these would have been the ones to grab... Especially given the size and option of EF or PL. Price point is outstanding! Did you run them much on your Fuji? Or just the Mavo?
I was going to comment about the MK lenses as well, would have been cool to see a comparison. The MKs are more expensive new, but having been out for a while you can get really good price for a used set. With so much of the new cameras being full frame it looks like you can get really good prices on S35 lenses.
Good to hear about the weight. From the specs, I see they are the same weight as my Sigma 18-35 and 24-105 still lens. That’s a win! I can see myself swapping my stills lens for these zooms, especially since they have an EF option.
Sure! I took a page out of my playbook from before. The small test is a little irrelevant but shows activity on the image. The CTR right now is 10% which is great

Personally I love the S35 look, and in my line of work F4 in S35 is a minimum...I often has F10 on my FF panasonic, and personaly I like zoom compression effect but I am not really a fan of super fast lenses and "bouquet". My only parfocal lens is 18-35 1.8 sigma with speedbooster.. Maybe I could revive my cine lens, and some Vintage mod lens I have found ultra cheap with the new DJI Lidar focus system... About Ranger zoom...sure I am interested and maybe could have a need for them but no budget rigjt now and priority is consolidating finances, taxes etc... To say the truth I would actually rather buy another Schoeps mic because the resale value of these mics is really very good and they are almost industrictible and sound fantqstic...If any advice you want in pro audio gear Buy schoeps like CCM or other cinema solutions they are truely top and Made in Karslruhe (Durlach) in Germany. Lol not the same at all because it's still lens. Good luck pulling off critical shots with that, also the sigma is not parfocal. But if it checks your box good for you!
@@CineDailies I meant that for those who cannot afford such lenses. This lens is definitely going to cost a few thousand dollars. You can get the sigma for 200 dollars. Big difference
