Cameron, to replace cam chain on XR80, remove flywheel and stator assembly. Note use JASO MA oil for motorcycles.

when you have oil out for a while its good to put a tag on the bars with "No oil" on the throttle. That way anybody that attempts to start it can see the tag.

    • @ykruH
      @ykruH 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Every time I take out the oil or air filter for some days, I put a sticker in the throttle grip as a reminder. "No Oil"/ "No Filter". Sometimes we may have a busy week and one can forget things, no good to run the engine with no oil or no filter ;-D

Zip tie on the throttle grip also works.

If it's not a daily driver, just check the oil before starting. Takes literally, 20 seconds.

I remember the time that I rebuilt my 400EX and I did a high compression big bore ported, stage two hot cam, kibble white +1mm valves and springs etc etc... Took it for the test drive after building it for weeks and weeks little by little, and it kept dying and it sounded like it was pre-detonating, so I thought that’s what it was (it would always fire right back up) so got home poured race fuel into it thinking that was the issue just needed higher octane due to the 13:1 Compression..... it still did it and then I remember looking on my bench there was this little metal gear, didn’t think much of it. Something told me to pull the oil cooler line and crank it and make sure oil is pumping... so i did that and no oil came out, then it dawned on me that I forgot to install the oil pump drive gear! Happy ending though because all I had to do was just replace the cylinder and piston. now get this is a totally true story here... So when I originally bought the first piston from Weisco Pistons they so happened to accidentally ship me two! When I originally Contacted them and they said they May have shipped a 2nd one out by accident but there might of been a mistake and they told me to just keep the other piston. In the end it worked out perfect though!

I just rebuilt my crf450x and had a dream that I forgot to put oil in it haha. First thing I did when I woke up was put the oil and coolant right next to it so I wouldn’t forgot. Runs like a top now!

cameron niemela.... when checking valve seals you shouldnt use water as it has a high surface tension and it would require a larger break in the seal for water to show its face..... next time use alcohol or fuel as its very low tension and will show leaks way better. another thing, when youre done lapping valves you should sharpie mark the sealing surface and gently rub the valve against the seat and see if it wears the ink off evenly.....your lapping compound can look like it hit all surfaces but doesnt mean the valve and seat are genuinely mated together. keep up the great work and love your channel... also congrats on landing a great woman!!!

    Hey Cameron,
A little trick to change the timing chain without taking the engine apart. Break the old chain while its in the case. Break the New chain. Hook them together temporarily. Pull the new chain through using the old one. Once the New chain is in place take the old chain off and hook the new one back together. It is a bit tricky at first but once its done once it is much easier that screwing with splitting the case and tearing into other stuff.
Loved the video, always super descriptive and well put together!

Man, that is so much more complicated than my 33 year old Honda. I have a couple caps for timing marks instead of taking the whole cover off, don't have to split cases for new timing chain (which I had to replace 😂), and the cam gear had a cover over it for easy access. All in all, an amazing video on a beautiful bike, and a lesson to yourself and viewers on what not to forget!

I was hoping for a yoshi or poweroll cam. (not even sure if those companies are still around). Great video reminds me of my past life as a Honda bike mechanic in the 70s. Hey you may want to explain why the end gap is important. I use needle nose on the wrist pin clips. Put it on one edge, seat the other edge and gently roll them into place by rotating them toward the gap. You pay so much attention to detail it is incredible. Any person who gets you as there mechanic is darn lucky. Thanks for the memories. Larry

A tip for really checking your seat surface after lapping. Grab a lead pencill and draw lines all across the surface of the seat, then take your dry, clean valve and spin it around the seat. If the lead is gone you have a good surface.
Sometimes you get an uneaven surface where it seals uneavenly even tho it looks good after lapping.

Honestly, I did the same exact thing once. I had replaced a gasket on the right side crankcase cover of my 2 stroke and when putting it back together I completely blanked when coming to putting oil back in. Buttoned everything else up and went to ride. Rode for a solid 20 mins on my neighbors track/field. Wide open throttle ridding it like it should be ridden having a blast. When while sitting taking a breather it hit me that I hadnt put oil in it. You can bet i was scared to death that i had probably just fried my motor. I pushed it back to my shop, put oil in it and called it a day. Rebuilt it probably 40 hours later and even after the hell I had put it through everything looked good.

did you use a different bolt on the cam chain tensioner hold down plate when you put the engine back together? It was soothing to watch an XR80 motor get rebuilt. brings back memories. Im looking to pick one up for some backyard fun.

I had a 91 RM80 when I was 12-13 years old. Thinking back, I don't remember changing the oil or adding any
    EVER.
I ran the absolute shit out of that bike. I finally sold it when I was 19.

Good video. Bore should really be measured near the top (below the cylinder ridge), middle and bottom to check for taper with a bore gauge or snap gauges and a mic.

I use to drop the oil in my XR600 and tip it straight into my car...bit by bit.
It was motul oil. My car use to use 16 litres every 6mths.
