  • Concert: U2- Dublin Point Depot, 1989-12-26, LoveTown tour.
One Tree Hill is a 182 metre volcanic peak located in Auckland, New Zealand. It is an important memorial place for both Maori and other New Zealanders. The suburb around the base of the hill is also called One Tree Hill. When Auckland was founded as a colonial town a totara tree stood near the summit which gave the hill its name.
The tree was cut down by a white settler in 1852, in an act of vandalism in one account, or for firewood in another. A radiata pine was planted in the 1870s to replace the previous totara.
Until 2000, the lone pine tree stood next to the obelisk. However, this remaining tree was later attacked twice with chainsaws by Maori protesters. The first attack happened on 28 October 1994, the anniversary of the 1835 Declaration of Independence. A second attack on the 5th of October 2000 left the tree unable to recover and so it was removed due to the risk of it dying and falling down.
The summit stands empty at the moment, except for the obelisk. A new nickname, No(ne) Tree Hill, soon became popular.
Irish rock band U2 wrote a song about the hill in their song One Tree Hill, which appeared on their album The Joshua Tree. It was written to honour New Zealander Greg Carroll, an employee of the band who died in a motorcycle accident in Dublin on July 3, 1986.
    -----------------------------------------------------
The song also includes the massacre that took place in Chile in 1973. Victor Jara was a poet and song writer who was rounded up and taken to a stadium with thousands of other innocent people where they were beaten and killed.
On the morning of September 12, Jara was taken, along with thousands of others, as a prisoner to the Chile Stadium (renamed the Estadio Víctor Jara in September 2003). In the hours and days that followed, many of those detained in the stadium were tortured and killed there by the military forces. Jara was repeatedly beaten and tortured; the bones in his hands were broken as were his ribs. Reports that one of Jara's hands, or both of his hands, had been cut off, are, however, erroneous.[citation needed] Fellow political prisoners have testified that his captors mockingly suggested that he play guitar for them as he lay on the ground. Defiantly, he sang part of a song supporting the Popular Unity coalition.[citation needed] After further beatings, he was machine-gunned on September 15 and his body dumped on a road on the outskirts of Santiago, and then taken to a city morgue.

Stumbled across this today. I have been a fan since the 80's and this band and their lyrics helped me through so much of my life. There is no better time then right now with covid 19 to listen to U2 and find our inner strength as a world society.

@Mike Kinsella This past year I’ve renewed my love of U2s music. This was probably the first album of theirs that I bought in 1987. I’m a mental health counselor, and U2 has been giving me joy and energy in a very draining time of the pandemic. Peace to you.

    Hi Zena,
Yes i live in Auckland NZ.
I am also a NZ Native Maori.
One Tree Hill was such an amazing sight. High on a mountain with the single tree, it was a beacon to the world and visible from all over Auckland. Its Maori name is Maungakiekie.
U2 wrote this song about Greg Carroll, also a Maori from New Zealand who became an assistant and close friend of Bono after he met the band in 1985 while they were in NZ. He was killed a year later when he was hit by a car while running an errand for Bono on Bono's motorcycle. The album The Joshua Tree, as well as the song,One tree hill, are dedicated to Greg Carroll.
In 1994 the tree was attacked with a chain saw by a Maori activist but survived, unfortunately in 1999 when it was attacked again by vandals, it was decided that the tree would not survive and had to come down. The tree was 120 years old.
The activist wanted to draw attention to the injustices he believed had been inflicted upon the Maori people by the New Zealand government.
Most Maori (and New Zealander's in general) were outraged by this action and our hope is that one day another tree will be planted to take its place!!!!!
I hope this answers your questions......................Aroha (Much love) from the people of NZ!!!!

He was such a cool looking guy!, and the song is a brilliant tribut e to their friend (an all time favorite song of mine too). It's tragic that the tree was cut down, but I can see the logic in that. Long live the Maori people and all indigenous peoples. Regards from Ireland

    Hi guys,
I live in New Zealand and this song was written after one of their New Zealand Tour members died in an accident in the 1980s. They dedicated the song to him and only normally play it live when they are in NZ. There have been some exceptions but basically that is why it is not usually heard at their concerts. One Tree Hill is a sacred hill in the middle of Auckland & it is such a special moment when they come back to sing it.
Very very special song to all New Zealanders.

    • @andubh9360
      @andubh9360 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Maybe since it's written for and dedicated to Greg Carroll, a roadie/member of the U2 crew who died in an accident while getting Bono's motorbike, and therefore quite emotional and special for them. So they just play it on special occasions.

At their peak, from 1985ish through 2000ish, there were very very few on their level in the history of popular music(btw thats an incredibly long peak). This is was recorded right at the peak of their peak. And you can tell. His voice was just incredible here. I wish he would have taken better care of his beautiful instrument so they didn’t have to begin transposing their music down due to his voice being fried later in their career.
My God I miss this band.

    One Tree Hill
    U2
We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill
As the day begs the night for mercy love
The sun so bright it leaves no shadows
    Only scars carved into stone
    On the face of earth
The moon is up and over One Tree Hill
We see the sun go down in your eyes
You run like river, on like a sea
You run like a river runs to the sea
And in the world a heart of darkness
    A fire zone
    Where poets speak their heart
    Then bleed for it
Jara sang, his song a weapon
    In the hands of love
You know his blood still cries
    From the ground
It runs like a river runs to the sea
It runs like a river to the sea
I don't believe in painted roses
    Or bleeding hearts
While bullets rape the night of the merciful
    I'll see you again
When the stars fall from the sky
And the moon has turned red
    Over One Tree Hill
    We run like a river
    Run to the sea
We run like a river to the sea
    And when it's raining
    Raining hard
    That's when the rain will
    Break my heart
    Raining, raining in the heart
    Raining in your heart
    Raining, raining to your heart
    Raining, raining, raining
    Raining to your heart
    Raining, raining in your heart
    Raining in your heart
    To the sea
    Oh great ocean
    Oh great sea
    Run to the ocean
    Run to the sea

It was only released in New Zealand as a single having been written by Bono for Greg Carroll, and debut at his funeral. It is still an iconic "New Zealand" song and a much loved favorite. The rest of the world got Red Hill Mining Town instead I understand.

Great song in every way. On the album it is a hidden gem as someone commented before, but live, wow. It just keeps growing, growing and growing. Then it grabs you and you are a part of it. Truly stunning.

If U2 had any jamming tendencies they could have jammed another 5 minutes at least at the end of this song. So good, always one of my favorite songs.

+Claudio Chiarella you don't need to be communist to love the people of your country! I'm not communists!!! I'm Chilean who hate violence!! how I know about Communist? I was only 6 years old! grow up in Pinochet regime and now live in the USA! is like me calling Fascist when I don't even know you!😠

+Francisco Concha why don't you calls U2 communists for putting those black & white pictures of Victor Jara"

    • @claudiochiarella2
      @claudiochiarella2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Being an australian-chilean citizen i find communists scumbags and totalirarian , their ideologies sucks, in my case my parents had to flee in 1975 out- to Australia seeking for better life, instead to bear poorness and disorder in Chile. Pinochet wasn't that good at all, of things we can image, but Allende's government was terrible, utterly incompetent leader and frustating one. Though, you can see, nothing was right in those times; i still keep on mind the idea that all the greats things occured was for good purpose. Victor Jara was a dick, how can some one disobey military enforcement?, wheather, he must have stayed quiet and idle at once under military force. I like U2's songs but they are not communists prayers, though, they are more quickly to stay closer to socialdemocracy than other radicalized idology. I wasn't in Chile in they 80's but i can tell ya , common sense rules upon us. To end, I don't like either violence and hatred behaviours, but, things had to happen for the good of Chile. No one could even stop it. Cheers!

Bono and U2. NZ needs you now. Please do a concert in NZ and for Christchurch. Please donate all proceeds and profit to those in the Christchurch region who are going through such difficult times. U2.You are NZers as you have that connection with our country. Our country needs you now.Kia Kaha to those we call Our NZers through out the world at this most tragic of events. There are many bands that come and go through NZ but it seems like U2 truly are NZers/Kiwis.
