On an album FULL of hits, this song is still the best of the lot (in my opinion). I think if this was put on any other album, it would have been a huge hit. But honestly? I like it as it is, a secret little masterpiece for those of us who grew up listening to The Joshua Tree.
My fave from an album of faves. This was Bono's Baby and it kicked his Ass...The band had about 23 songs to cull for the album, many weren't finished, including this one, and they simply didn't have time to spend on it. Bono couldn't get the right sound, arrangement, etc and U2 had already Tabled it for a future time but Bono kept on it. It's a song about Divorce in a Coal Mining town and Bono wanted it on Joshua Tree. This has the best vocals he ever recorded and is only performed live when he feels his voice will hold up while he sings mostly out of Range
I feel achtung baby is the greatest album ever, but the Joshua tree is right behind it. One, is the first song I ever heard by u2, and I was hooked, and they became my favorite band.

There was a time when U2 could do no wrong. Everything they were doing was fantastic. No one today is doing anything that comes remotely close. I'm lucky to have been growing up in that era.
I played this album every day from when it first came out for at least a year , amongst a few other great albums that came out around the same time. Music is still great but it’s just not AS great as it used to be. I miss real musicians and bands and even singers used to be better. Maybe I’m biased but I don’t think so.

Red Hill Mining Town is for me one of U2’s most criminally underrated and overlooked songs. This deserved to be a single far more than With or Without You. Amazing slow build up to a fantastic ending. Bono’s vocals here are some of the best he’s ever produced. Even the ending and the protracted “red hiiiiilllllll…” and fade out brings me out in goosebumps. WTSHNN and SHFWILF are the iconic songs on The Joshua Tree and are rightly regarded as some of U2’s finest work. But the most stunning and moving song on the album? This hands down, it deserves far more recognition. It’s up there with U2’s finest moments.
I totally agree with you, this is such a wonderful (& underrated) song. Bono's vocal performance on this song is astounding. The end section is obviously at the very limit of his range but that's what gives it such incredible passion. And yet I often feel that Bono is overlooked by a lot of people as a great singer.
With or Without was the biggest hit single from the album and ironically, to me, it is the weakest tune on the album. Most were not mainstream friendly, they were too deep, dark and complicated to be top 40 hits back in 87.
Last night we listened to this song with my father (a very big U2 fan) and he told me that two days after I was born my dad played this song while I was in the cradle sleeping. Every time I listen to this tune I get really happy because I thank my father every day for have filled my heart with this love of U2. Dad, if you’re seeing this message, I love you ❤️
MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. And I still remember when U2 first came out on the stage with all blue lighting and the first song was Where the streets have no name! The whole concert was unbelievable, I have seen them 4 times ever since, last one last year in Las Vegas at the Sphere, went with my wife it was an awesome concert as well. Love U2!

Oh I remember this look in 1987 the first time I saw them and it amazed me that this man could stand on a stage in a simple black shirt and move a whole arena to tears with his voice alone. No gimmicks, no giant screens, just a band doing its thing.
I was driving home on 15 south next to the Las Vegas strip when this song came on my Pandora, Subculture: 80s Alternative channel. I blasted up the volume on my JBL sound system, started singing along and couldn't help but to get teary and emotional. These 80s masterpieces do it to me all the time! I love U2 and now I'm looking into buying tickets to their show at the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas. I hope they play this song!!!

U2 isn't about or 'behind' Bono, though i absolutely share ur admiration for the man. Truth is, any member of U2 would be 'another very good artiste', but, together, they become magic.
As a group, bigger than the sum of their parts. The band is not Bono and the rest, it is U2. All credit to them for sticking it out for 40+ years with no member changes, except they needed a drummer to fill in for Larry in Vegas because he was ill. But he should be returning.
Hard to pick a best song on one of the best albums of all time but this has to edge it. Can really feel the honesty and heart in his voice . Pure class

OMGosh-yes!! It's like I heard it for the first time when I got it on vinyl a few months ago. I actually had the cassette of this back in 1987 and LOVED the album but this song didn't stand out for me back then. Now...it's my absolute favorite U2 song.

I think the song was only released as a single in Australia, so the video would have been more or less irrelevant to MTV programmers. But what do I know other than this song is stellar.
When I bought this album at age 15, I of course focused on the US singles/hits. However, even at that age I could see that THIS song on the album was THE eternal classic of the album. So much soul, emotion and timelessness in it. One of the best they ever recorded.

When I was in the military, we did a deployment in the desert of Nevada.. . The week this album debuted.... The dealers at the casino, took us out to the desert. I made sure we enjoyed the sunrise..
I think this song describes my failed marriage. I think this song deals with multiple subjects like a lot of U2 songs. That's why ,besides the music and lyrics, one of the best bands ever.
U2's lyrics to the song describes the anguish and despair of the Miner, "You I can't live without" , his lover that he's missing, " you're labor day has come and gone," the long hours day after day , "We steep so low to climb so high ! Oh sweet freedom when you finally are released from the Mine ! Bono sings the song with intensity and Rightfully So, also , relating to are labor's in this life , I sing right along with him when this Song is playing!
My favourite U2 song. It was originally scheduled to be the initial release from the Joshua Tree album. But given the huge vocal range required Bono opted to release " withorwithoutyou" first. Seemingly he didn't fancy losing his voice too early upon the albums release. I am not surprised. Bono's vocal range definitely one of the most underrated singing ranges in the business. Awesome song I love it.
How did Bono never get into acting? The camera clearly loves him and he is giving it his all and they can’t even keep up in some shots. He is one of the best front men hands down!

Oh I remember this look in 1987 the first time I saw them and it amazed me that this man could stand on a stage in a simple black shirt and move a whole arena to tears with his voice alone. No gimmicks, no giant screens, just a band doing its thing.

I was driving home on 15 south next to the Las Vegas strip when this song came on my Pandora, Subculture: 80s Alternative channel. I blasted up the volume on my JBL sound system, started singing along and couldn't help but to get teary and emotional. These 80s masterpieces do it to me all the time! I love U2 and now I'm looking into buying tickets to their show at the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas. I hope they play this song!!!

As a group, bigger than the sum of their parts. The band is not Bono and the rest, it is U2. All credit to them for sticking it out for 40+ years with no member changes, except they needed a drummer to fill in for Larry in Vegas because he was ill. But he should be returning.

OMGosh-yes!! It's like I heard it for the first time when I got it on vinyl a few months ago. I actually had the cassette of this back in 1987 and LOVED the album but this song didn't stand out for me back then. Now...it's my absolute favorite U2 song.

I think the song was only released as a single in Australia, so the video would have been more or less irrelevant to MTV programmers. But what do I know other than this song is stellar.
When I bought this album at age 15, I of course focused on the US singles/hits. However, even at that age I could see that THIS song on the album was THE eternal classic of the album. So much soul, emotion and timelessness in it. One of the best they ever recorded.

Edge definitely can sing he actually sounds great! His thing is the guitar and the composition but he can also sing for sure and it doesn’t sound bad at all !! He complements Bono’s singing with his backing vocals! Love U2 ❤☘️☘️☘️
You hear a band move from their raw energetic early days, knowing that one day they will grow and mature as artists. Then they produce a song like this, beyond anything you can imagine.
I miss the days where singers really cried it out. I miss the 80's so much. Only TINY pockets of that sentiment can still be found in 2021.

Bono sings the song with intensity and Rightfully So, also , relating to are labor's in this life , I sing right along with him when this Song is playing!

Never a big U2 fan, but, this is tremendous song. Never knew we had so much in common
My favourite U2 song. It was originally scheduled to be the initial release from the Joshua Tree album. But given the huge vocal range required Bono opted to release " withorwithoutyou" first. Seemingly he didn't fancy losing his voice too early upon the albums release. I am not surprised. Bono's vocal range definitely one of the most underrated singing ranges in the business. Awesome song I love it.
