My fave from an album of faves. This was Bono's Baby and it kicked his Ass...The band had about 23 songs to cull for the album, many weren't finished, including this one, and they simply didn't have time to spend on it. Bono couldn't get the right sound, arrangement, etc and U2 had already Tabled it for a future time but Bono kept on it. It's a song about Divorce in a Coal Mining town and Bono wanted it on Joshua Tree. This has the best vocals he ever recorded and is only performed live when he feels his voice will hold up while he sings mostly out of Range

A criminally underrated song, one of U2's very best tracks on their best album ever, The Joshua Tree. Undoubtedly brilliant, a treasured gem and genuine masterpiece.
Whatever you think of U2 in general, or their newer work in particular, you have to admit it's hard to find fault with The Joshua Tree. Beautiful, well-made music; Bono Vox showing he's worthy of the name.
Don’t know why but I had this song on my mind, hadn’t heard it in over 20 years. Pure magic, touches the depths of my soul, transporting me to a beautiful place and time.
U2 isn't about or 'behind' Bono, though i absolutely share ur admiration for the man. Truth is, any member of U2 would be 'another very good artiste', but, together, they become magic.
As a group, bigger than the sum of their parts. The band is not Bono and the rest, it is U2. All credit to them for sticking it out for 40+ years with no member changes, except they needed a drummer to fill in for Larry in Vegas because he was ill. But he should be returning.
Best Album of all time IMO. U2 has saved me many times, through hard times as their music is not only amazing, but so therapeutic, gets to your soul, deep down and grabs you to take you higher in ways that are indescribable. Thank you Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry for not only your music but your devotion to us, the fans.

It is always great to discover a gem. This is a diamond for sure. Enjoy. They rarely have played this live. Understandable with how Bono is singing his lungs off. Great song.
My favourite U2 song. It was originally scheduled to be the initial release from the Joshua Tree album. But given the huge vocal range required Bono opted to release " withorwithoutyou" first. Seemingly he didn't fancy losing his voice too early upon the albums release. I am not surprised. Bono's vocal range definitely one of the most underrated singing ranges in the business. Awesome song I love it.
Saw U2 1987 The Is Joshua Tree tour at the Hollywood sportatorium In Hollywood, FL. He brought the house down with this song ! No Giant video monitors or laser show. No props or Gimmicks. Just a voice that could melt a Angel's heart. Absolutely Intoxicating.

I saw U2 on the Joshua Tree Tour in I guess 87. We stood in line all night long in the rain for tickets. In the morning, everyone stormed the doors of the record shop, they even had to call the police in. I was the only one who squeezed in to the counter to get 4 tickets. The sold out on the guy after me. We were 4 rows from the top of the stadium in NJ but no one cared. U2 had only white lights in the concert. Nothing else but the music. The entire stadium stood for the whole concert. Unbelievable. The Joshua Tree will go down as one of the greatest complete albums in history with the likes of Ziggy Stardust!

In Red Hill town
See the lights go down on

Hanging on
You're all that's left to hold on to, on to
We'll scorch the earth
Set fire to the sky
We stoop so low, to reach so high
A link is lost
The chain undone
We wait all day
For night to come
And it comes
Like a hunter child
I'm hanging on
You're all that's left to hold on to
I'm still waiting
I'm hanging on
You're all that's left to hold on to

A vocal performance like that is a once in a lifetime thing, people.
Hanging on... Youre all thats left to hold on to ...
From father to son.
That guitar does it for me! This song and One Tree Hill have always been my two favorites on this album!
One of their best if not The best song from U2.
Yes... along with A Sort of Homecoming, Running to Stand Still, Bullet the Blue Sky and... so on and so on ;-)
God bless the Irish!
Irisshhhhhhhh Englishhhhhhh. 😊
The best U2 song IMO. About 300 close 2nds
Hard to pick a best song on one of the best albums of all time but this has to edge it. Can really feel the honesty and heart in his voice . Pure class
Another level
Yep 👍
Edge it,was that intentional?
Larry looks like a mini Dolph Lungren
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It is 2024 and I just heard this song for the first time. I really like it. How did I miss this in the 80s?
It is always great to discover a gem. This is a diamond for sure. Enjoy. They rarely have played this live. Understandable with how Bono is singing his lungs off. Great song.
My favorite song on my favorite album of all time. It is brilliant. It's so is so heartfelt and well done.
Very Underrated
U2 Forever
Definitely one of the best rock bands ever! Powerful voice and awesome guitar and bass and drums!
My heroes for my lifetime
The best damn Band on planet.
The best song of the album!
I wanna wish a Happy early 63rd Birthday to U2’s Lead Singer Paul David Hewson Bono
I love you ❤️ U2
I got out of hospital last Monday. I am glad to see U2 again.❤
@coby PORSCHE U2 didn’t perform this song live until 2017
sadly didn’t perform live until 2017
I miss the days where singers really cried it out. I miss the 80's so much. Only TINY pockets of that sentiment can still be found in 2021.
Never hear it howadays
No it all sounds like moaning and auto tune these days.
@@diddlysquat8595 robot vocal moans and groans
I’m listening to U2 Red Hill Mining Town late April 2023
Was, is, and always will be my favorite U2 song. Turn it up!
Canary in the Coal-mine; so powerful. So relevant to today and people don’t even know.
This was by far their best song
No it wasn't.
U2 on the top of the music world..
This is quite possibly U2s most underrated song !
Took a minute to find this one. Never popular but absolutely brilliant
Favorite singing of Bono.
Love this song. What a great voice!
remember when this album was the entire world?
That ending... pure ART! ♥
They are the best of the best still
What a masterpiece !! 🥰
The music is good, the lyrics are good, the voice yes...Bono, Larry, Edge and Adam beauty is there... Yes their youngness ...God that remember my my time, my beauty my youngness... God thank for the blessing, Tks U2 let's get older together, better than dying young
Youth is awesome, but Larry has aged like the finest of wines. 😻
U2 will go down in history for sure
