The best joke in one piece isn't when Zoro gets lost, its the joke that always follows it where he wonders where everyone is and says "those idiots must have gotten lost"
@Silas I actually hate the Sanji dumping post timeskip where he was getting life threatening nose bleeds and Brooks panty gag got old extremely fast. I prefer brooks angle humor and jokes about being a skeleton.
i miss that guy till this day, man was taken too soon from us. i hope he returns soon. Sogeki no Shima de Umareta Ore wa Hyappatsu Hyaku Chū Ru Ru Rara Ru〜♪
honestly i hope he stays gone, it would show that Usopp is brave enough to not have to hide behind an alter ego any more and be closer to becoming the bravest warrior of the sea. (not that Sogeking and Usopp are the same character or anything!)
Not only do the Strawhats never get boring but after 1,000 chapters the fandom still complains when there’s not enough of them in the story. A true testament to their greatness
The funny thing is zoro getting lost him and sanji fighting somehow after 25 years and still just as funny idk how you tell the same joke time after time and it's still Hella funny
Chopper is actually the reason why I kept going into the series. I was really worried that the rest of the main cast’s development wouldn’t be as good as Nami’s, but then…I got to the Hiruluk story…and his last words made me feel a few emotions… “I’ve lived a marvelous life! Thank you, Chopper!” That quote was the thing that kept me going, especially the ending of the arc where they make the cherry blossoms bloom. That moment kept me from abandoning One Piece, and I’m thankful for that
@@erglwrgl It's more likely than you think it is. It's not unusual for people to drop series when the story becomes stale or boring to them, even if that happens several hundred episodes later.
"He's here for a good time, not a long time." For a show that is super long, this is shockingly true. Luffy doesn't live worrying about his mortality, so he lives as recklessly as he can
@@Hamlet.act3.scene3.line87 At this point, I'm fairly sure Luffy dies in the end. While that would be sad, I do expect it to be Luffy going out on his terms with a smile and his face. If that happens, the entire fanbase is going to bawl their eyes out while reading it.
@@shyguypro9876 i thought this as well, but tbh i think Law is going to bring him back one of these days, probably when he fights Blackbeard, his body will give out and Law will choose to save him rather than watch another friend die, there is a reason that fate wanted him to have that power.
I gain a year of life every time a person finds out that One piece is actually amazing, literally my favourite anime ever. Did you know the One piece world has their own clothing brands? and those brands have their own off-brand brands???????? It's crazy
you didn't ask but reminds me of the level of worldbuilding in Splatoon.. every in-game song has its canon band with their own band members etc. love when creators put that extra effort into their work
@@Andriale exactly what i thought too lol, one piece, splatoon and avatar the last airbender are my 3 favourite pieces of media for worldbuilding, all absolutely amazing
The themes of the show are why Fishman Island is still my favourite arc to this day. How Oda presented a society where fascism was left to fester because of the higher class neglecting the struggles of the poor was goddam prophetic. And also how he understood that fascism isn't a set of ideologies with a clear core, it's a means to an end, just a method to gain power and oppress people that aren't like you. That's why when Luffy asks what humans have ever done to Hody for him to hate them so much and he responds "Nothing" It cemented this arc as as masterpiece of storytelling.
We won't see another masterpiece like One Piece. We are lucky to be alive at the same time as Oda, this man needs to never be forgotten for the work he did.
@@chihuahuasarecool7880 well, I wanted that too, but I have read the manga since I was 15 (i'm 30 now). And I decided to re-read, binging reading and it was AWESOME to revisit some scenes. I do recommend, and when it comes to an end, we will binge too!
@@chihuahuasarecool7880 I honestly don't know if I agree with that. I've been caught up to the manga since Water 7 in 2004 (yes, that's before the 4Kids dub started airing in the US--I first learned about the series in 2003 from Viz publishing volume 1, binge-watched the anime from there, and then switched to scanlations when I ran out of anime during Skypiea), and getting to talk to people in real time about whether Usopp is really going to leave the crew with Merry (90% figured he'd rejoin even before Sogeking showed up, but around half of people also thought the Merry would just be upgraded/made larger with its repairs, not that it'd ever be truly replaced, so we were wrong about that one), seeing the creativity of Luffy's Gears replace the already-classic-by-then super saiyan tropes (and have people argue about whether One Piece was going to just turn into another powerscaler manga because of the introduction of Douriki, which we haven't seen since), having the entire fanbase genuinely shocked by Ace fucking dying in Marineford since Oda had never killed anyone outside of a backstory before, the monthlong agony of the time skip where we all waited for updated character designs with bated breath.... Gear 5............ These are all things that anyone that sees One Piece promotional material at any point in the next 10 years will just take for granted before starting the series. No one has been able to dodge Gear 5 spoilers--even on the One Piece subreddit that officially bans all manga spoilers without spoiler tags, they've stopped caring about gear 5 spoilers for months now because EVERYONE has seen it. Getting to experience the story week to week is an experience I wouldn't trade for the world.
I was a college freshman in 1999 when I started watching one piece and the only background about it that keeps me from watching was Oda already knew the ending. Assuming the anime would end in a year so I kept watching and didn't realize it was getting longer. Took a break at the start of Zou because I got married and now coming back to watching with 2 kids. Can't believe this is still going. New viewers are lucky nowadays that they can binge from the beginning. Back then the dread of waiting was awful especially in the water 7 arc. Anyway, welcome to the new fand. I was smiling while watching your video by the way.
Haha, I had started in 2011 as I had finished college and had some time. I was caught up with all the episodes and then moved on to the manga. Finally in 2022, I took a 1 year break from the manga. I had even stopped engaging with any One Piece content on social media to avoid spoilers. Recently I had caught up with all the latest chapters because spoilers kept popping up on my TH-cam due to the live action series.
lol are you me by aany chance? 2011 is where I got back to it as well. One Piece was for me this cool anime I watched as a kid and jsut randomly decided to check where it's at. Back then I remmeber when I caught up again it was right after the great war a few episodes into Luffy's childhood flashback with ace and sabo@@littlesushie
@@xXx-un3ie omg i think we are the same person. I saw one piece randomly on TV as a kid. I somehow retained the memory of a rubber protagonist and googled it a decade later. I had caught up as the war to save Ace was on-going.
I remember when I got into it, I had seen it’s early episodes on toonami and read some of the early chapters in a shonen jump book I got from a scholastic catalogue. Even was at the age I enjoyed the 4kids dub. Years and years later I remembered it and thought “let’s check it out.” It was in the middle of the marineford arc. And I thought “oh wow! It made it to 460 episodes!” And I watched it for a while… then thought I just misremembered the episode coun when it changed. And after a few months i realized it was still going”
The idea of people being raised by people (particularly fathers) that arent biological parents is both a reason for and a necessity of one of the main themes of the series "inherited will"... the idea that you dont necessarily inherit the will of the people youre realated to but of the people who inspire you in how to live your life... and it such a cool part of the story!!!
rewatching this video after i've watched around 50 episodes and finally gave the show a chance. just wanted to thank you. when lufi yelled "OF COURSE!" with his heart, i felt that.
Becoming the Pirate King sounds so generic and I remember not wanting to get into One Piece, but I gave it a shot. When I discovered what becoming King of the Pirates meant I was so emotionally moved and surprised in the best way. Luffy wants to be the most free man in a corrupt world and will free the world in the process. I am now caught up to the manga and it is possibly my favorite series of all time.
@@johnortiz6129 I mean, out of context it just sounds like a generic "I want to be the strongest" kind of goal. It's only by reading One Piece that you find out that it doesn't mean that exactly.
I love Nami she's out there protecting other women a lot which is kinda interesting for the type of character she is. You'd expect her to be the character every girls jealous of for romantic reasons or whatever because of her attitude and looks but NO. She's for the girls MOST of the time. She aint here to cause jealousy. I love her 😭 the ship would explode if she wasn't there.
YES there is no putting down of other women to uplift themselves, but appreciation and support and letting every woman be amazing and skilled in her own way. Nami may seem annoying and greedy and even evil at first if you only scratch the surface and know not much about her, but after reading the manga she is easily one of my favorite characters. The female characters are all so well written ❤ or rather characters in general in one piece
The greatest misconception about One Piece is absolutely the idea of powerscaling. It's god damn stupid. Oda is crafting a story full of colorful characters and life. The fighting is just a shuttle that we ride to the next important story beats with our Straw Hat family.
I still find the power scaling fair in the series because it still accounts for the story. Like Mihawk, introduced early on as the strongest swordsman in the world, we’re in Wano and he’s still the strongest. Or the Crocodile and Luffy fights
People don't think about the fact that power, realistically, isnt linear. Just because A beats B in situation X, and C has lost to B before doesn't mean that C will lose to A in a different situation!
@@themilkman5004 I think Mihawk solving the power escalation syndrome from the get-go is super unappreciated. And on his second major appearance in Marineford, he tops his original feat of cutting Krieg's massive ship when he casually bisects an iceberg the size of a mountain.
@@mikanchan322 Exactly. It's why hearing people say someone is "Yonko commander level" or something is so pointless and stupid. Burgess is a Yonko commander but so is Marco. And Marco is an incredible veteran pirate.
I’m currently on ep 632 and I regret not getting into this show earlier. It’s so fun and addictive, I literally watched the Ace arc all in one sitting. It’s too good.
You're not gonna regret it at all when you catch up and then have to wait a week for every new episode like I did this month. I'm absolutely distraught I can't keep binging it to my liking.
It's actually crazy how much the subject of slavery is brought up and how it's always shown as a horrific thing every time. What happens to the characters, what they do to escape and the type of people they are after because of it (Boa Hancock, her sisters, and the Sun Pirates for example)
The thing is. The fights are so effective because you're so invested in the result. You truly care about who wins, the consequences of losing are generally _dire_ for characters you genuinely care for, and so, the fights don't even have to be particularly spectacular for you to be interested.
@@jamesbarnett5799 I've always preferred the one and done fights. They're so few and far between. Luffy's gear 2 and 5 introductions are cemented in my head cause they so effectively communicate how much of a power boost Luffy just got. Whereas with gear 4... Luffy still spends like 5 episodes fighting Mingo and barely wins.
Also love the point you made about Zoro! He's way more a of a comedic character than people seem to give him credit for. Calling him a jock is the PERFECT description for him, we love a good-hearted bro! Easily my favourite moment of Zoro's is in the post-Enies lobby arc. He's alone at the beach, staring at & contemplating his recently rusted & destroyed sword. No score is playing, the waves are crashing, he looks so introspective as he sits in the lotus pose atop a rock; and after a long, anticipation-building beat, THIS is all he says: "This bites." Next scene. That's it. It's SO FUNNY. He constantly subverts the stoic samurai character trope to the best results. Obviously he's still a badass and has many genuine moments of reflection and cool (I loved that little moment between him & Brook at the cemetery right after Thriller Bark, for example) but yeah, people seem to often cite him as the most classically grounded character in the series, which wouldn't be bad but doesn't do him enough justice.
Also one of the best Zoro's scenes of that same kind is his introduction after the time skip. We see a ship getting fucking CUT IN HALF, and some will instantly remember that's the same way MIHAWK was introduced, so when we see it was actually Zoro we instantly believe he has become incredibly badass and indestructible now. And then, after the whole cinematic, the camera pans on him, silence, and he only says: "I got on the wrong ship". So perfect
Went in expecting fun pirate adventures, left chocking up over a fucking boat and loving the crew dynamics. Each one being able to be a protagonist of their own series is great. Robin and Franky forever.
Watching this show I realized early on the fights supplement the story, not the other way around like many shows do. That is what allows One Piece to still have a massive active audience despite its relatively slower pace and length.
The main thing I love about the OPLA, is the pacing. I stopped 6-7 years ago on episode 678 (dressrosa) and the live action show brought me back, and by god I forgot how slow the pacing can be.
"i didn't go into one piece expecting to cry" BIGGEST MISTAKE YOU CAN MAKE. I have cried more times to one piece than all other forms of media combined, and this is no exaggeration. A big part of why is that the things that make you wanna cry somehow become better on a reread/rewatch? Also if you don't want to read the manga because you miss the colors from the anime, there's a genuinely great fan colored version (that started a little choppy but is now amazing) that's about 80% done with wano as I write this comment
I just love how One Piece tricks you into it with the promise of cool fights and the colorful, carefree and cartoony art style and then Gomu Gomu no Pistols you in the face with how DARK and complicated it gets. And it works so well!! The goofy style should feel disjointed with the themes and conflicts but it doesn't at all! Also, I love how many people who were at first averse or hesitant about getting into it end up being like "Fuck. They were right."
oh wow, i honestly can't fathom getting into this series when over 1000 eps are already out there. you absolute mad lad. one piece has been with me (or rather, i've been with OP) ever since the arlong park arc aired when i was a kid and i keep saying "i would have never gotten as deep into this thing if i haven't watched it since back then" i'm so happy to hear you talk about the show with so much enthusiasm!! and even happier that you went and said it - this show isn't about the fights or how high the bounties are or whatever else some people scream about. the wonder we experience over and over when we get to meet new characters and the places they live in is just- ugh!! no other piece of media does it like OP! no other piece of media does it as consistently! and you're absolutely right about everything being so over the top that the style eventually,,, kind of becomes a total normalcy (which of course doesn't excuse some of the continuous missteps that are taken over and over again) welcome to the fandom!!
I actually have a similar kind of start with my One Piece journey. I got Volume 9 (Beginning of Arlong Park) as a present back in 2009 and things like Nami's backstory and walk to the Arlong park immediately hooked me. Shortly after that I somehow found volume's 1 - 50 from an online auction website for a really cheap price. After buying and reading them all I was hooked for life. After that I kept on buying all the new volume's as they were released (53 was the newest at that point) and I currently now own all 98 of the One Piece volumes. The series with it's ever increasing length can seem dauting looking back but I have been enjoying the journey whole way through and will keep on doing so in the future
it's easy to think that, but once you really get into it, you dont want to stop, you want to watch each episode seeing what happens next, that's the power of One Piece.
i love that in one piece nothing lacks purpose. everything circles back and gets an explanation later on, characters come back, and characters interact with more than just the main characters. i love that it has everything from the emotional backstories, to the lighthearted adventure, to the intense fighting, etc. the part about the found family definitely holds true; i just watched marineford and wow. i love this show😭
If someone says usoop is annoying i can bet My left arm that they are not onepiece fans cause every one piece fan knows usoop and buggy are The strongest Characters in every Aspekt of life
People forget that Usopp's whole character arc isn't about becoming stronger, it's about becoming braver and becoming helpful to the crew in anyway they can.
Started watching One Piece about 6 months ago, currently on ep 454 and enjoying every second as I make my way through. Never in my life has any story gripped me so instantly as this one. I absolutely adore it.
I genuinely wished the fights were shorter so that we actually get more lore. Nevertheless, I'm so grateful for Oda and all his work. I've been in love with his work for like a decade now but I've been in and out of the loop about anything One Piece for a very long time because of real life. However, I just know I'll never fall out of love with it. I'm up-to-date and loving the live action as well, the cast is especially awesome.
It absolutely delights me when people discover this anime/manga. It has been a part of me for over 20 years, I started watching when the first episodes were released on the German tv channel. (I live in another country so we had to watch via satallite). And with all the times I've reread and rewatched the manga/anime I just never get enough happiness when I watch and hear new fans react to the biggest adventure ever. Thank you for sharing your passion to this show for us to hear.
I think it says a lot that while it's moderately acclaimed overseas (in some places more then others) it's one of the biggest things in Japan. Sadly I think there's maybe a barrier in culture that will always leave this series underappreciated in other countries but again it makes a lot of sense to me that this manga is truly praised by the country it comes from.
As a Japanese person, I do think it is more popular in Japan, but in terms of how much people get the themes and dive into the message overseas viewers have an incomparable amount of insight and analysis. In Japan it's very surface level because there isn't much regard into analysis of story and such compared to remembering the explicit.
I know I'm late, but the manga has these things called cover stories, which are stories told one panel at a time over the course of 20-30 chapters. These are very important, as they are canon.
God, I hope it was not mistranslated but zoro saying to nami, "If you don't fall down to hell, I'll push you there myself." Is just so funny and one of my faves. Nami and zoro's dynamic is underrated.
i feel like the fandom is pretty divided on that aspect as if half of the fandom hates the fights, and the other half loves them idk, maybe it has toned down a little, since years ago it was very obvious that the fandom really cared about the fights
Eh, it might be a different section of the fanbase than what you've come across, but there's still an annoying amount of people (most of it I've seen from some reaction channels) that straight up complain when there hasn't been "hype action" for a while, and rank their favorite characters by strength and who they could beat in a fight. One Piece is such a weird choice for someone like that to watch imo
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING ALL THIS!!! Especially the part about Usopp and Zoro! They’re characters are soooo misrepresented by the fans in my opinion. I really actually agreed with everything you said in the video! Thank you so much for this!!!
I love this so much!!! Thanks for making this video. I was explaining One Piece to my sister and she just looked at me and said, "wait, I thought this was a comedy.".....IT IS. It plays the world so beautifully that it's real and it's harsh, but also so so so much fun.
I've been seeing your live tweeting of One Piece since the beginning, but I think that with this video, you've convinced me to actually take a look at One Piece. By the way, your editing is absolutely hilarious.
Thank you for pointing out the Bechdel test, as a woman who likes shonen it was something I noticed and loved immediately about One Piece! The show/manga not only passes, it passes with flying colors, and the depth of the female characters (all characters, really) puts other media to shame. Even for those characters who *do* develop romantic feelings for other characters (like Boa, who is in love with Luffy to the point where it becomes necessary for the plot), it's absolutely not the only thing important about them. Boa is a badass warlord empress with a tragic backstory and trauma of her own and does plenty of other stuff besides being in love with Luffy. Sakura from Naruto, please take note. Also loved your brief aside about power scaling -- it's always seemed so dumb to me. Those obsessed with power scaling do not understand how stuff really works. Just because you beat me once doesn't mean you always will, even if we try again immediately! Best of three? That's not even mentioning the difference that motivations and mindsets can bring...like Luffy losing to Lucci at first and then defeating him (narrowly) a bit later on, when he was more certain about everything.
Wow! This was the best most insightful review of One Piece I ever heard. You have a fantastic way of communicating to the audience and THANK YOU for saying that One Piece is not just about the fights.
I have been a one piece fan boy for about 7 years now and have watch so many videos of people analyzing the story on their first time through, but I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it! It’s always such a joy to see people take the plunge and realize why this story is so beloved by its community. Of course you have the meat heads on the surface who enjoy the punch fighting and power scaling (which isn’t a bad thing) once you’re in the community you can see that we all love it for so much more than the fights! I love all your takes on the story and I think I speak for all true one piece fans when I say we’re happy to have another nakama coming along on this journey!
started the scratch the surface of the anime (im where chopper joins) and I can tell you there is a buttload of emotion in each backstory! I will tell you you will feel for at least 1 of these characters and the one that hit me the hardest was Chopper's since i do relate to the poor guy since it was very hard for him to make even one friend! also the episode where chopper joins the strawhats had me in a blubbering pool of my own tears with hiriluk's "cherry blossoms" and I am STILL tearing up thinking about it! i get the hype behind the series from that alone! and if this is only within the first 100 of over 1000 i know there is a buttload more i have to witness
I first watched one piece as a kid like many .. the 4kids tragedy version tho .. and then some more in middle school and high school (got through Alabasta originally ) and kinda forgot about anime for a while . I rewatched it from the beginning starting about a year and a half ago .. I got to water 7 6 weeks ago and I’m at episode 540 now . Water 7 and Ennies lobby is when it became my favorite show ever and I’ve been watching episodes whenever I get the chance to now . The shows really helped me a lot in my own life . As a navy veteran (a corpsman so I’ve been with marines and sailors ) this show really struck so many emotions into me and hit close to home so much . Especially since I got out because I disagree with the gov and have lost quite a few friends when I was in . This show has truly captured my heart and helped me fight my battles . Seeing the strawhats cope with immense loss has helped me cope with my own . I’m eternally grateful to Oda and this magical world he’s created . I’m so happy I still have over 600 episodes left in this fantastical journey . It’s truly made me laugh , cry and grin from ear to ear like show ever has . It’s really generated that child like sense of wonder and joy I haven’t felt in so long
i just got done speed running one piece and im now completely consumed. Reading and watching all the theories. But your videos are standing out. I really appreciate your deep dives on the characters
*Spoiler Warning* Hey! This a super interesting video. I always LOVE hearing what people think of One Piece after they get really hooked into it. I think you made a lot of really great points that are important for people, who wanna get into One Piece, to hear. Especially the parts about the world, characters, and long-term storytelling aspects like the part involving Sanji. The only part I thought was a little strange was the section talking about the fights. I think mostly everybody would completely agree that the events that lead up to the fights are way more important. I think the reason the fights get highlighted so much is because of the emotional payoff. Essentially we all agree with you! Also I would be very interested to hear why you aren't a fan of Garp.
Wild guess but seeing how warmly she spoke of the trope of finding your own family I would say that is the very reason she doesn’t like Garp. He went against everything the story stands for (given how most of the straw hats were raised by people who they weren’t related to) when he did the minimum to help Ace escape. He is also the complete opposite of what Luffy stands for. Luffy would rather die than not be free and you could say that Garp is someone who doesn’t fight the system and just became a part of it. Climbing as high as he could to get a little bit of that freedom. Even though he knows how messed up and horrible said system is. I wouldn’t say Garp is a bad person. Just someone trying to make the best of his life given his circumstances.
@@KaregoAt Thank you. I still wished Garp had helped Ace but that would have immediately solved the main and most important issue of all those arcs. I am fine with him sticking to his principles because otherwise it would have felt cheap. He’s a good character. I like that he stuck to his ideals but I also don’t like he let Ace die.
@@co7769 Yeah, he's a man in a difficult situation and you could definitely see it tearing at him during Marineford. That being said, I can still resent the guy while understanding where he's coming from 😅
Just recently discovered your video essays and I wanted to look when you started making videos about One Piece, and the way you started is just 11/10 from me. When you said One Piece isn't about the fights, the thought "She get's it!" just came to me and when you said NAKAMA. I just lost! Anyways always love seeing someone join the cult which is One Piece. that's all! Love the vids.
The anime's pretty good up till the time skip. Punk Hazard onward starts to really drag (partly due to anime having to wait for Oda to write more of the manga). I'd recommend reading the manga instead. There's sites that have the series for free if you don't want to collect the series.
@@otterfire4712 as someone who watched only anime, from the first episode to the recent one is span of 3-4 months I disagree. Music, animation and amazing japanese voice actors gives a lot to the whole experience, if there is something that drags you can always skip it, just like when you read. There are also short "filler" interaction between the crew and others that are just gold and manga doesn't have them.
@@kinsta2949 manga adapted anime typically cover about three chapters per episode, the One Piece anime covers about 2 chapters at most and stretched it out to 1 chapter per episode from Fishman Island to Whole Cake Island. This was due to the anime out pacing the manga. Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach would solve this pacing issue with filler episodes, but Naruto and Bleach would be more famous for it due to the overall length of their filler arcs. One Piece has significantly fewer filler arcs, most of which are only two to four episodes. While I appreciate the VAs and music produced, they are the biggest things going for the anime. Meanwhile, reading the manga allows you to follow the journey at your own pace, whether you're a slow or fast reader the manga panels, dialogue, and art aren't going anywhere until you're ready to move on. As it is, anime's pros are the inclusion of audio and occasional glimpses of quality animation for important scenes. It is bogged down by a slower pace per episode to minimize filler while keeping itself as a week to week series over the years, which includes some cut corners on animation, whether static images moving around or filling out time recapping recent events. While manga lacks the inherent music and VAs, the author still took time to include onomatopoeias to mimic sound produced and you can still listen to your own music while reading it to add to the experience. The manga also enables the reader to experience the content at their own pace, whether fast or slow. It's also the source material for the anime so you're getting the true experience. If you've managed to get this far, thank you for reading it all, you may not agree with my thoughts, it's just my perspective between the two. I watched the anime till the early parts of Whole Cake Island before dropping the anime because of how slow each episode dragged. It was especially bad during Dressrosa and I became fed up with it. I managed to get my hands on a collection of the manga and have steadily grown my collection since.
I’ve been watching one piece since since I was 6 and I’m 24 now. Once I got over the age 15 I finally saw Ora’s masterful work with world building. Without a doubt one piece’s most impressive aspect is it’s world building and how lively is. The world is alive. While we follow the straw hats other stuff is happening at the same time elsewhere in the world. It’s so great

I´ve just discovered your channel, and already binge watched all your video essay about One Piece and what can I say?, You have a new subscriber, greetings from Chile.
yeah honestly what ive seen, most one piece fans agree the fights are not one piece's strong suit, and if someone wants to watch/read an anime/manga mainly for the fights, one piece is def not the #1 choice. also, when's the zoro/ sanji vid? O.o jk lol. i really liked this video and have immensely enjoyed following your one piece thread i hope you continue making videos about this series cuz i would love to hear your thoughts on specific characters, arcs, and even idk weird theories Also, who's your favorite strawhat, non-strawhat, and arc? Mine are Luffy, Whitebeard, and marineford. Runner-ups would be zoro, law, and sabaody archipelago

I have never read or watched One Piece. for years the only thing I knew about it was that it had pirates. that's it. just pirates. but I'm really into other anime like Naruto and I watch a lot of videos about that so youtube often recommends me videos about other anime. it's been recommending me your One Piece videos for a while and I recently decided to watch one or two just to get a feel for what the anime/manga is all about. and I have to say... you've really inspired me to read and/or watch One Piece now! I definitely plan on reading the manga and I'm so excited to learn more about this world! I've watched most of your videos about OP so I already know some stuff but you have really made me want to get into it so I thank you for that!!
One piece is my favourite anime and one of my fauvorite series overall. The story and characters impact me so much In many different levels. Im happy that you were also able to throw yourself In this magical journey.
I love your One Piece vids! I don't think I've seen anyone look at all the complex nooks and crannies of the story and characters on TH-cam as much as you do, and your funny edits make me smile. I recently decided to read the manga all over again from the beginning. Mental health issues yanked my attention away from everything I love, including One Piece, about 400 chapters ago. I have a strangely confident feeling that you'd enjoy Gintama. Unless you've already tried and it ended up not working. Me personally, I liked it until I got totally hooked at episode FIFTY TWO. It seems like a slow start for a lot of people, but genuinely soul touching and way more than worth it for anyone who sticks with it.
9:27 "Blood is thicker than water" is actually short for "the blood of a bond between friends is thicker than the water of the womb," so people who use it are unknowingly refuting their own point.
This video makes me jump around in excitement and joy like a god damn dork. Thank you. It makes me so explicably happy, not *in*explicably happy, because i could explain it if i tried, but i wont, and i think everyone else who understands already knows anyway
Really amazing video! My only problem (not really) is your Zoro take. So Zoro isn't just tied up to a pole, his introduction is to show the fact that he is willing to endure his sentence. This highlights his faith and loyalty which becomes one of his main characteristics throughout the series especially towards the one who granted him freedom
I watched the Live Action show of OP and got so drawn into the characters and plotline that when it finished I had to check out the anime purely to see what happened next. I had never watched anime before this - but now after binging on it from about 4 months ago, am now up to current episodes. I am absolutely hooked and for all the same reasons stated in this video. I even have a Luffy tattoo now lol. It's truly brilliant and I try explain to people why - now I can just share this video with them. Thankyou so much for this - I'm glad its not just me haha. Subscribed.
Damn same but i started after one piece film red ... that movie really made me watch the whole show ... but i don't regret the journey one bit.... one of my friends who is a op fan used to say op is greatest story ever told in fiction... i think she was right about that
Good for you!! I talked a friend into watching one piece with me and we're 350 episodes in now ❤️ I'm so glad I get to share my favourite anime with a friend who Likes it!
Thank you so much for starting one piece. It’s my favorite manga of all time and it breaks my heart where people don’t start it because they think it’s just a long shonen
Glad you were able to enjoy the show and thanks for the video. It finally encouraged me to go back and give the show another chance. I was able to enjoy the goofy, storybook look of the show and quirky fun of it all in my first attempt at watching it. The mountain of episodes killed it for me, but to hear you convey the strengths of the characters and themes (also, I'm a sucker for found family trope) has reignited my interest.
Every time I hear people cry about the number of episodes, I ask them what other shows they have watched, then tell them that the amount of episodes of sub par anime they have watched instead are equal or greater than the amount of incredible episodes of One Piece they refused to watch. It's such a lazy excuse.
I remember first time I watched One Piece, Id binged it. Although at the time the top episode was 413 just getting into the Amazon Lily short arc. But the moment I knew this anime(didnt know about manga at the time but One Piece got me into Manga later on. Was to impatient to wait for episodes, no regrets!) was on a whole completely level was I think episode 3 or 4 when it was during Buggy arc. And the show said something about Musu(Think that was the dog's name) that his treasure was the store his old man owned. To me that was a lot especially for a Pirate show.
This show is just a true, fully-fledged masterpiece, and the sheer amount of people that say “Nah I’m not watching that, it’s way to long” are just straigh5 up missing out.
Welcome to the one piece community! I found your channel when I watched your Sanji videos, and omg, your insights are spot on and absolutely brilliant!!! Thank you so much for your videos, off to explore more of your channel now!
Seriously now one-piece has been part of my life and I don't want it to finish! I wanna keep continue watching with my kids and grandkids. I wanna introduce this epic saga to my new coming generations...

Chopper is actually the reason why I kept going into the series. I was really worried that the rest of the main cast’s development wouldn’t be as good as Nami’s, but then…I got to the Hiruluk story…and his last words made me feel a few emotions…
“I’ve lived a marvelous life! Thank you, Chopper!”
That quote was the thing that kept me going, especially the ending of the arc where they make the cherry blossoms bloom. That moment kept me from abandoning One Piece, and I’m thankful for that

That's why when Luffy asks what humans have ever done to Hody for him to hate them so much and he responds
"Nothing"
It cemented this arc as as masterpiece of storytelling.
Actually it wasn't luffy that asked Hordy, it was Prince Fukaboshi. He just told Luffy after the fact.
We won't see another masterpiece like One Piece. We are lucky to be alive at the same time as Oda, this man needs to never be forgotten for the work he did.
Anime/ manga fans born when one piece is over are even luckier! I’d love to be able to “binge” the whole manga in one sitting.

I was smiling while watching your video by the way.
cant imagine watching weekly for two decades, i've been reading weekly for a year and im exausted lmao

Same, it escapes me how you think that's a generic goal though. Not a lot of stories have that
@@johnortiz6129 I mean, out of context it just sounds like a generic "I want to be the strongest" kind of goal. It's only by reading One Piece that you find out that it doesn't mean that exactly.
I love Nami
she's out there protecting other women a lot which is kinda interesting for the type of character she is. You'd expect her to be the character every girls jealous of for romantic reasons or whatever because of her attitude and looks but NO. She's for the girls MOST of the time. She aint here to cause jealousy. I love her 😭 the ship would explode if she wasn't there.
they'd already find one piece because Zoro would be the navigator, im sorry for the joke
Weake , stupid cring character
the only woman who is jealous of Nami is Boa Hancock LMAO
The greatest misconception about One Piece is absolutely the idea of powerscaling. It's god damn stupid. Oda is crafting a story full of colorful characters and life. The fighting is just a shuttle that we ride to the next important story beats with our Straw Hat family.
I still find the power scaling fair in the series because it still accounts for the story. Like Mihawk, introduced early on as the strongest swordsman in the world, we’re in Wano and he’s still the strongest. Or the Crocodile and Luffy fights
The power scaling is consistent anyway, people just misinterpret feats or make stupid assumptions about what characters should be capable of.

I watched impel down and marineford weekly as it came out and it was brutal.
It's actually crazy how much the subject of slavery is brought up and how it's always shown as a horrific thing every time. What happens to the characters, what they do to escape and the type of people they are after because of it (Boa Hancock, her sisters, and the Sun Pirates for example)
Adding to the list: the people Robin frees during the time skip + the situation in Dressrosa.
I like these themes especially in one piece, Luffy wants to be pirate king, the freest man in the world, the exact opposite of slavery.
Slavery and taxation are theft.
It's all about that Brazilian independence! THE DRUMS OF LIBERATION BE WITH YOU!
It cannot be simply LEARNED how to write a story this long and interesting. Oda is gifted.
Oda fell in love with this story harder than any of us
The thing is. The fights are so effective because you're so invested in the result. You truly care about who wins, the consequences of losing are generally _dire_ for characters you genuinely care for, and so, the fights don't even have to be particularly spectacular for you to be interested.
Exactly!
Luffy vs Bellamy comes to mind...
Not a big flashy fight, but a very cathartic, incredible moment nonetheless
I knew luffy vs usopp was coming and when i got to it it was still heart wrenching
No score is playing, the waves are crashing, he looks so introspective as he sits in the lotus pose atop a rock; and after a long, anticipation-building beat, THIS is all he says:
"This bites."
Next scene.
So perfect
@@irenmorningstar LMAO YES that part absolutely destroyed me, Zoro just rocks
Went in expecting fun pirate adventures, left chocking up over a fucking boat and loving the crew dynamics. Each one being able to be a protagonist of their own series is great. Robin and Franky forever.

Watching this show I realized early on the fights supplement the story, not the other way around like many shows do. That is what allows One Piece to still have a massive active audience despite its relatively slower pace and length.
"He's here for a good time, not a long time" is the best one-sentence description of Luffy I've ever heard
The main thing I love about the OPLA, is the pacing.
I stopped 6-7 years ago on episode 678 (dressrosa) and the live action show brought me back, and by god I forgot how slow the pacing can be.

"i didn't go into one piece expecting to cry"
BIGGEST MISTAKE YOU CAN MAKE.
I have cried more times to one piece than all other forms of media combined, and this is no exaggeration. A big part of why is that the things that make you wanna cry somehow become better on a reread/rewatch?
Also if you don't want to read the manga because you miss the colors from the anime, there's a genuinely great fan colored version (that started a little choppy but is now amazing) that's about 80% done with wano as I write this comment
i think it's actually officially colored, but its a tad slower than the official release
They were right."
or "Now I get it"
oh wow, i honestly can't fathom getting into this series when over 1000 eps are already out there. you absolute mad lad.
one piece has been with me (or rather, i've been with OP) ever since the arlong park arc aired when i was a kid and i keep saying "i would have never gotten as deep into this thing if i haven't watched it since back then"
i'm so happy to hear you talk about the show with so much enthusiasm!! and even happier that you went and said it - this show isn't about the fights or how high the bounties are or whatever else some people scream about. the wonder we experience over and over when we get to meet new characters and the places they live in is just- ugh!! no other piece of media does it like OP! no other piece of media does it as consistently! and you're absolutely right about everything being so over the top that the style eventually,,, kind of becomes a total normalcy (which of course doesn't excuse some of the continuous missteps that are taken over and over again)
welcome to the fandom!!
I started when there were 936 episodes. By the time I binge watched through Season 3 I had a Strawhat tattoo. Lol
i love that in one piece nothing lacks purpose. everything circles back and gets an explanation later on, characters come back, and characters interact with more than just the main characters. i love that it has everything from the emotional backstories, to the lighthearted adventure, to the intense fighting, etc. the part about the found family definitely holds true; i just watched marineford and wow. i love this show😭

Part of it may also be the bad start it got in the west. The damage the 4kids dub did may never be undone
As a Japanese person, I do think it is more popular in Japan, but in terms of how much people get the themes and dive into the message overseas viewers have an incomparable amount of insight and analysis. In Japan it's very surface level because there isn't much regard into analysis of story and such compared to remembering the explicit.
THIS IS EVERHTHING I NEEDED!!!! JUST STARTED WATCHING ONE PIECE AND I HAVE BECOME GOD DAMN OBSESSED!!!
Enjoy your journey
Which ep you on?
And she never stopped talking about One Piece
I know I'm late, but the manga has these things called cover stories, which are stories told one panel at a time over the course of 20-30 chapters. These are very important, as they are canon.
God, I hope it was not mistranslated but zoro saying to nami, "If you don't fall down to hell, I'll push you there myself." Is just so funny and one of my faves. Nami and zoro's dynamic is underrated.
I think the fanbase agrees that One Piece is not about the fights!
i feel like the fandom is pretty divided on that aspect
as if half of the fandom hates the fights, and the other half loves them
idk, maybe it has toned down a little, since years ago it was very obvious that the fandom really cared about the fights
Eh, it might be a different section of the fanbase than what you've come across, but there's still an annoying amount of people (most of it I've seen from some reaction channels) that straight up complain when there hasn't been "hype action" for a while, and rank their favorite characters by strength and who they could beat in a fight. One Piece is such a weird choice for someone like that to watch imo
majority of the fans in op discord servers are hardcore powerscalers. even after an insanely lore heavy chapter drops its all they do💀
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING ALL THIS!!! Especially the part about Usopp and Zoro! They’re characters are soooo misrepresented by the fans in my opinion. I really actually agreed with everything you said in the video! Thank you so much for this!!!
people always groan when I say I like one piece and now I'm gonna send them this video because it echos everything I love about one piece
One piece is the only show where I get MORE excited when a flash back starts playing (in manga and anime)
Garp isn't shitty he just don't know how to express his love 🥺🥺
Nah he shitty
@@bnktendo5869 you won't say that after re watching marineford
Oh no, he's shitty. He just watched.
Idk he's kinda shitty tbh
He literally abuses children so shut tf up
I love this so much!!!
Love seeing that she went from this to making entire essays on how fleshed out the characters are
oh crap!
how did i miss one of my favorite youtubers making a video about one piece?!
If it wasn’t for One Piece, pandemic would be even more hellish than it already was, this anime helped me through the worst time of my life
Same for me dude
I discovered what anime was during the pandemic 💀

The part about found family is so true. The moment in Enies Lobby when Luffy bodies Blueno and then jumps and screams Robins name was so incredible
started the scratch the surface of the anime (im where chopper joins) and I can tell you there is a buttload of emotion in each backstory!
It’s really generated that child like sense of wonder and joy I haven’t felt in so long
Thank you for making a video about venturing into One Piece and welcome to the fandom to everyone this video influences.
i just got done speed running one piece and im now completely consumed. Reading and watching all the theories. But your videos are standing out. I really appreciate your deep dives on the characters
*Spoiler Warning*
Hey!
@@co7769 You put it so well, that's exactly how I feel about Garp.
That being said, I can still resent the guy while understanding where he's coming from 😅
@@KaregoAt exactly how I feel.
Okay i was struggling to start this huge ass anime but I guess I'll finally give it a shot eh? 👀
please do! Its very good!
The anime's pretty good up till the time skip. Punk Hazard onward starts to really drag (partly due to anime having to wait for Oda to write more of the manga).
I'd recommend reading the manga instead. There's sites that have the series for free if you don't want to collect the series.
How's it going?
I managed to not laugh until I saw usopps face again at 11:20 I love that part so hilarious
It’s so great
Great video💜 Same as you, I started one piece 3months ago and I’ve almost completed wano. The journey is definitely rewarding and I’m glad I took it.
me (someone whose followed you for years) and my sister (someone whose been watching one piece for 10 years) finally agreeing on a TH-cam video to watch together, thanks Mel
jk lol.
i really liked this video and have immensely enjoyed following your one piece thread
i hope you continue making videos about this series cuz i would love to hear your thoughts on specific characters, arcs, and even idk weird theories
Also, who's your favorite strawhat, non-strawhat, and arc?
Mine are Luffy, Whitebeard, and marineford.
Runner-ups would be zoro, law, and sabaody archipelago
One Piece shows the problem with the west calling Shonen a “genre,” because it’s not.
Yo, i was laughing so hard when you played the out of centext humor, it was so great and i loove the humor sooo much.
And i love One Piece so much, to finish One Piece is my highest priority on my bucket List and i will stay on this earth until its done, no matter what!!!!
And hopefully much longer but we dont talk about this xDD
One Piece is the greatest Story i know and there is nothing in Media that i love that much for nearly everything that is One Piece!
The fights, the Characters, the Lore, the Worldbuilding and sooo sooo sooooooooooooo much more. It is an One (in a lifetime) Piece of art!!!!!
Really awesome breakdown of my favorite anime, it's genuinely hard to explain all the reasons why One Piece is so great to a potential new fan, but I think this video sums it up very well. You've got yourself a new fan!
I'm coming back to watch this video after Luffy pt.1
"I have nothing new to say."
Means for the past two years you've had the most refreshing and beloved takes out lf any creator.
When someone says they don’t like Ussop or any other straw hat it just upsets me.
A series so good it rebranded the Melonteee channel.
One Piece and specifficly Luffy were and allways will be my biggest insperation of what typ of person I want to be ever since i watched it in 7`th grade
5:59 This edit almost made me imitate Zoro and fall to the floor laughing, too perfect
9:27 "Blood is thicker than water" is actually short for "the blood of a bond between friends is thicker than the water of the womb," so people who use it are unknowingly refuting their own point.
Ah, yes, MelonTeee's one and only One Piece video.
The start of my favorite One Piece youtuber.
7:47- 7:53
4kids: yeah this seems safe for kids
The Strawhats are so hype and friendly that sometimes I forget that they are pirates. Whatever, they’re built different.
"One Piece isn't about the fights"
YES, YES. SPEAK THE TRUTH. LET IT BE KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.
Exactly bro
Welcome to the one piece community! I found your channel when I watched your Sanji videos, and omg, your insights are spot on and absolutely brilliant!!! Thank you so much for your videos, off to explore more of your channel now!
So I’ve made it to Wholecake (I’m on 830) and I’m now a broken man in the best way. This show is actually peak.
Seriously now one-piece has been part of my life and I don't want it to finish! I wanna keep continue watching with my kids and grandkids. I wanna introduce this epic saga to my new coming generations...
