Why it works for Oda? Because:
    - He has devoted his entire life to the creation of the manga.
    - He only sleeps 3-4 hours a day, since 1997.
    - He has been drawing every day, since 1997, even when in hospitals.
    - He only had one vacation since 1997, when the timeskip happened, he and his family spent two weeks on Hawaii. And he was still drawing there.
    - When he is on breaks, he still works on the series and further fleshes out story lines to avoid writing himself into a corner.
    - He's breathing and living the manga and everything that he and his editor talk about is the manga.
    - His normal work cycle is getting up at 5 in the morning and working till midnight. His working conditions involve 90 hours typically per week which increase to 125 hours when he works on One Piece movies as well (like One Piece Gold).
    - He only sees his family once or twice a week because of all of this.
Source: Various interviews that have been made over the years with him.
His love for the manga is reflected in the manga quality which is why he's able to endure these kinds of conditions. Which is also why it's so consistently high. He expresses it in interviews too that he loves creating for it.
The conditions for mangaka are already really bad and more people should be aware of them but Oda really takes the cake in this case which is funny and a bit ironic because One Piece is the most successful manga of all time. It comes at a cost and people should be less disrespectful towards him and his work.
Edit: Since this comment really blew up, I would like to clarify that the manga is not flawless. It's not perfect. Oda has made mistakes too, he is kinda inconsequental about killing minor characters but at least keeps major characters dead. He has pacing issues as well. Despite all that, I love the manga and have been following the series since 2004. Just to keep this a bit more neutral.

nah not really. guys, its his life! its like you choosing to become a pilot and then just fly planes on a daily basis and you are happy about despite having to be away from home all the time. if you are happy, why should anyone say you are doing something wrong with your life. if he is doing it on a daily basis and he still enjoys it and loves it, there's nothing wrong with it. and its basically because he treats it dearly that the manga still work wonders. i mean its not like he isnt human or anything he watches other series a lot as well, and most recently i found out that he watches terrace house on netflix. its a japanese reality tv series. so no its not sad, its his life and he loves it. its not toxic to him why say its unhealthy or sad.

embei, it's alright. As bad as it sounds, he really really loves creating the manga. He always expresses it in interviews that he loves it. And ever since he was a kid he wanted to be a mangaka.
And Shonen Jump allowed him to do a frequent break every 4 chapters because his health got REALLY bad back in 2012-2013 when he landed into hospital to do an operation. But like I wrote, even in these breaks he still works on the manga, like writing additional story.

The manga series "One Piece" authored by Eiichiro Oda, has garnered widespread critical acclaim and a sizable fanbase, owing in no small part to its masterfully crafted plot, highly developed characters and a richly detailed world setting.
The narrative arc of "One Piece" is nothing short of a tour de force, with its intricately woven plotlines and subplots, replete with unexpected twists and turns that keep readers on the edge of their seats. The author masterfully employs the principle of Chekhov's Gun, introducing seemingly inconsequential elements early on in the story, only to later reveal their significance in a dramatic and satisfying manner. The plot is also skillfully paced, with moments of tension and levity judiciously interspersed, creating a dynamic reading experience.
The characters in "One Piece" are also noteworthy for their depth and complexity. Each character is imbued with a unique personality, backstory, and motivations, lending them a sense of verisimilitude. Oda's masterful characterization also extends to the series' antagonists, who are portrayed as multi-faceted individuals with their own unique ideologies, rather than simplistic caricatures of evil. The characters also grow and change throughout the story in a believable and relatable way.
Finally, the world setting of "One Piece" is nothing short of a masterpiece. The author has created a vast and vibrant world, replete with a richly detailed history, diverse cultures, and an array of fantastical creatures. The world also serves as an allegory for real-world issues such as power, freedom and oppression, making the story more relatable and meaningful.
In conclusion, the series "One Piece" by Eiichiro Oda is a quintessential example of exceptional storytelling, with its masterfully crafted plot, highly developed characters and richly detailed world setting. The complexity of the vocabulary used in the series, serves to immerse the reader and make the story more relatable and memorable. It is a testament to the author's acumen as a storyteller and the series stands out as a veritable tour-de-force in the realm of manga literature.

The sky island arc is where I fell in love. It's a show about pirates, yet they go to the most fairytale places and Oda makes each one fleshed out and real. I loved everything about it: how they got there on the knock-up stream; the fact that no one else believed in chasing that dream; the sea of clouds up there... I got a kick out the fact that sky society itself was tiered, like there was a sky on the sky - yet the haki of perception powers that we learn about there that seem so god like is then tied later to the world down below. It's just so epic.

For me personally, long running shows aren't favorable as they tend to damage the shows original integrity and cause burnout within me after some time, especially when they start regurgitating the same plot points and elements over and over again to the point that I'm no longer watching it out of interest but out of habit.
I cannot speak for One Piece in this case as I only watched it up until the arc where the Straw Hats go to that desert kingdom to prevent a civil war for a blue haired princess, but take Supernatural as an example of this.
Supernatural was originally intended to end at Season 5, but the show grew so much in popularity that despite the satisfying ending of Season 5, they decided to continue the story of the Winchester Brothers dealing with more monster shenanigans, to the point that Season 7 and onwards felt extremely formulaic, that I was no longer watching the show out of interest but out of habit instead.
Supernatural to me ended at Season 5, not just because Season 5 had a satisfying ending but because Season 5 and before was when Supernatural was at it's best and when the original creator of the show, Eric Kripke, was present as he left the show after Season 5 and to my knowledge hasn't been back since.
If they were going to continue Supernatural past Season 5, then they've should made a spin-off series with new characters and new elements with loose ties to the original series. Sam and Dean Winchester aren't the only monster hunters within the series after all, there are plenty of others.
Having a show run so long means that you have to spend more time with it, the more story details you have to remember, and since our lives are on a limited lifespan, we have a smaller incentive to rewatch a show the longer it is because they are more important things in life to focus on.
Fullmetal Alchemist, Hellsing, Castlevania, Ghost In The Shell SAC, and Cowboy Bebop are some of my favorite animes of all time, ones I've watched repeatedly, because aside from them just being overall great animes, they're also not too long to the point that even though I love them, I wouldn't want to watch them again because I don't want to waste precious time.

    • @chucktingle5093

@@TheCyclicGamer Yeah I get what you mean. A lot of shows with long run times will see a decrease in quality over time to the point that you are only watching it out of habit. But the amazing thing about one piece (which is something I have yet to see any other show reproduce) is that even after 20+ years of run time, the story continues to get better and better. Oda is such an amazing story teller.

I am not a writer but I think I agree with this sentiment.. It's easy to write character development, complex plot, whatever you wanna call it, but it's hard to come up with something that feels magical unless you just have it in your inspiration while writing the story. One Piece is pure magic.

@The D4C Gang You're misconstruing my points, it is not a dig to many of the amazing series out there. I am by no means trying to say that it is EASY to write something amazing but rather, it is even harder to make a series feel magical to so many people. It is not something that you can "objectively" point out, it is something you feel. Harry Potter to me is something that's absolutely magical, no pun intended. Does it have some of the best writing in the history of film? No. Does it feel like it should be watched and enjoyed by the majority of the people who simply love watching films? Yes.
This is not to say One Piece doesn't have any flaws at all, but at the end of the day, people who enjoy One Piece did not enjoy it because it's flawless. Unlike Hunter x Hunter fans or Attack on Titan fans who would jump on the series immediately as soon as there's any flaws, One Piece fans are generally more acceptable to flaws because being flawless is not something we One Piece fans talk about.
There are stories that grab the heart of the audience, and there are stories that feel logical to like. For example, Naoki Urasawa's Monster is an anime series that didn't grab my heart, but felt logical to like.
P.S. Also just to clarify, what I said in my initial comment saying it is easy to write something good, then saying in this comment that it is more about how it's harder to write a unique piece that captures people's heart. By that, I mean, how many amazing stories have been forgotten by the public over the years, and yet the one remains are the ones that people feel it within their heart. Countless of amazing stories have been written over the years, yet not all of them withstood the test of time.
Hopefully that clarify my stance on this matter.
edit: and again to make my point clearer, by saying "feels logical to like" it doesn't mean that you're forced to like it, but rather it's written so well that you like it.

As much I love the anime, and I got into one piece because of the 4Kids dub (best op ever), the quality took a nosedive around the time skip. I've been reading and watching One Piece for 20 years now. (since I was 7 or 8) No manga had made me cry, laugh and learn like One Piece did. I can't even describe how deep and detailed everything is. It's more than just a manga. These characters literally live in my heart and it breaks my heart when I think about the day it'll end. One Piece is and will forever be the best manga in the entire world.

Best part of One Piece: Talking about it with everyone.
The epic battles, heartbreaking loses, hyped bounty reveals, heated power scaling debates, mindblowing powers, unique characters, or even the massive world built for this manga are things we look forward to every week as a absurdly large and loving community that always welcomes newcomers.
I'm proud to be part of this journey with everyone and really look forward to reading this to its inevitable end. And most importantly, I hope that Oda finishes the story right and how he wants it to end without rushing it. He's worked so hard for this and deserves to leave it satisfied!

Same for me. I love the consistent passion and love Oda still shows in every chapter week after week since 1997. Just let that sink in, more than two decades of quality story crafting, drawing with a weekly deadline for every year. What I love the most of the OP community is the concern for his health and wishing he'd take more vacation to spend time with his family. For many of us, he became a part of our lives that gives us something to look forward to every week and I'll always cherish that.
Also the man made readers cry for a boat at the end of it's life. A BOAT ! That's a God Tier Author move.

Great series and it's changed my life for the better. I don't think a story has ever come close to this series imo. The Manga is awesome and the anime is great during the pre time skip and post time is great if you do it on one pace which has far better pacing. Wano is the best the anime has ever been to. Love the characters, story lines in each arc, world building, music, acting, art work which really grows on you, comedy, writing, emotions, action scenes etc. Glad I saw this video.

I think you only notice things when you watch it for the purpose to look for them, except the animation around just before the timeskip which can iffy. @@killuazoldick6986 Naruto gets a pass for me because inherently it is about Naruto never giving up on his dreams and his promises and everything he does reflects that (in the Canon story line).
Still, at the end of Naruto shippuden I don't really get how the world works. You only catch glimpses here and there and seemingly, bad guys become cataclysmic entities that are so beyond anything that you wonder how getting these powers actually works.
One piece skirmishes are usually on the smaller scale (even something like marinefjord is factually smaller than "world ending ten tails fight") but the stakes are more relatable and you understand so many character motivations in it that clash with each other that it becomes an exhilarating arc.
The only thing I wondered at the end of shippuden is, with what deus ex machina they would finish it.

    • @quinntrbl
      @quinntrbl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

@@killuazoldick6986 Honestly it's not even Naruto changing his goals. In the beginning it was a story about being a ninja, and it came along with all the things you'd expect from that. For example, the (first) Zabuza fight. Though Zabuza is more powerful than Naruto and Sasuke, they manage to use all their techniques to OUTSMART him, ya know, like a ninja would. It's a perfect example of how a genin or lower class ninja can still beat those higher than him if he knows how to properly utilize their techniques and jutsu. The world had very real consequences and felt real. Now, take the end (middle-ish too) of shippuden. It completely throws away the concept of what a goddamn ninja is. A ninja would not need to have a giant suit of goddamn armor that's twice the them. It pretty much becomes a light show and it sucks cause the show had so much potential.
Now, take One Piece.(Spoiler warning, btw) Luffy is a pirate, and that doesn't change. He is a selfish person, and doesn't do things for people out of pity or feeling a need to save strangers. Like with Nami. When Nojiko was talking about her backstory and why Nami is doing everything, he doesn't listen. He doesn't care about what happened to her or why she's doing what she's doing, he cares because she's their navigator, and has a use in his crew. That's just the truth of Luffy's character. If you have a use in his crew, he will fight to the death to keep you alive. If Zoro hadn't of announced how he will never lose again after being defeated by Hawk-Eye, Luffy would've left him to die. If Vivi didn't allow them to put their lives on the line with her, he would've left. If Usopp hadn't of apologized, he would've left him at Water 7. He is, at the end of the day, a pirate. Just one with better morals than most.

this video is so good and correct and still it only barely scratches the surface on what makes this series so great, which is in no way meant to harp on this video and in every way to attest to how MUCH there is to say. it's a story that explores perhaps every facet of the human condition with such beauty and emotional depth that it will capture you and dramatically impact the way you see the world and the people around you.
there's a youtuber i started watching recently who, before watching one piece just did regular variety/anime review stuff, then you see that first one piece video and then suddenly it took over their entire channel, with dozens of videos diving into its themes and characters with intense fervor. that's what one piece does to a mf man it takes over ya life. it took over my life. and i'm just a better person for it. my soul feels more enriched. i have a deeper understanding of and connection to my own humanity. that is the power of stories. and it's fully demonstrated by this work.

I've always ignored One Piece due to its sheer length. I just ignorantly assumed something so long and popular must be garbage. I mean, I've disliked every other long-running Shonen I've tried so I assumed OP would be no different.
But I kept noticing One Piece seemed to have more respect from hardcore manga/anime fans than stuff like say Fairy Tale or Naruto or Bleach.
So I started reading it...and I dig the hell out of it.

Something also worth mentioning, is how much "screen time" each member of the straw hat crew gets. One of the things that upset me about late Dragon Ball was how characters like Tien and Piccolo became obscured by the larger roles that Vegeta and Gohan took. But, while One Piece is centered around Luffy, his friends get tons of time to shine (one advantage of those fights where it cuts between characters is that each character gets focused on).

    • @jizzwardo9653
      @jizzwardo9653 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

hey man also another thing I like is pretty much every member of the crew has badass moments of their own, not justs the obvious ones like Zoro and Luffy. Even Usopp has had some of those moments (and I'm talking early episodes of the anime when he was just a liar and didn't do anything else)

    • @Kakachi07
      @Kakachi07 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Heck Side Characters get some decent screen time as well, despite how long the Dressrosa arc was, it was one of the best examples of Oda's ability to create new characters and flesh out and develop them.

Man oh man I'm a full one piece fan boy now, it is by far the best anime I've ever watched...it's goofy but the emotional beats hit you like a truck sending a main character to a new isakai world. It is genuinely amazing and because I caught up to anime before gear 5 dropped it made it that much better. I went from watching 5-6 episodes at a time to having to read ahead in the manga because I can't wait a whole week for the new anime episode to drop.
If you're reading this and are still undecided...watch it, it will 1000% be worth it.

It is my deepest hope that Oda is able to conclude the series how and when he wants to. I saw Kishimoto speak live at comicon, and he mentioned, in a roundabout way, that he had to eventually put his foot down and tell jump "this is it" and end the series. He spoke with Oda about it, and he said Oda responded with something like, "oh yeah... it has to end..." like it never occurred to him. I loved that. Oda just loves making it, and that translates in every chapter.
So I beg of Jump, please don't shackle Oda. Not like all the other manga artists that fizzled out and were force to continue. Let it be perfect, 100% Oda. I imagine Jump would be terrified if Oda was to leave... in a recent Jump issue the artist of Toriko made a manga of his relationship with Oda, and at the beginning of their career they mentioned how Jump needed a new anchor, since Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk were ending. One Piece indeed became that anchor, but I hope it doesn't include a ball and chain.
    I love you, One Piece.
