Not probably. He totally did and totally does. There’s a cover story where Miss Goldenweek attempted to break out her Baroque Works comrades and like half of them escaped but before leaving, she used the rainbow color of dreams to reveal Crocodile and Mr 1’s dreams which were a superhero and Pirate King respectfully. So yes that line definitely must’ve stung him.
I love how Buggy told Crocoboy and Mihawk "You can kill me if you want, I won't back down on it" and it wasn't just talk. He knows he's helplessly weak compared to them, he knows they can kill him with no hesitation, and yet he put his foot down, challenged their way of seeing the world and proved to us, that despite his weakness, trickery and once again weakness, he is actually THE perfect Captain for Crocodile and Mihawk, and other pirates of their kind like Moria- because if there is one person who can reawaken their dreams, IT IS HIM!
@@johansno5019 Doflamingo does not fit in that group. Moria, Crocodile and Mihawk had decent dreams with various levels of terrible approaches. Doflamingo, one and all, was a spoiled brat who, admittedly, got tortured horribly, but otherwise is just a spoiled brat.
Buggy did inherited some of Roger's charisma and personality traits. 1. Buggy has a natural ability to attract followers and form alliances, just like Roger. Both were able to gather large crews and gain loyal subordinates through their charisma and personality. 2. Buggy has a sense of humor and enjoys having fun, just like Roger. They both don't take themselves too seriously and know how to keep the mood light. This makes them more likeable and charming. 3. Buggy has a bold and daring personality, willing to take risks. This is similar to Roger's own adventurous and fearless spirit. They both seek excitement. 4. Buggy has big dreams and ambitions, wanting to become Pirate King. This shows he inherited some of Roger's own desire for freedom and quest for the ultimate treasure. Their ambitions drive them forward. 5. Buggy has a certain flair for the dramatic and enjoys being the center of attention. This shows some of Roger's own showmanship and love of putting on a performance for crowds. They both crave the spotlight. In many ways, Buggy did indeed inherit some of Roger's most defining personality traits that made him King of the Pirates - his charisma, sense of adventure, ambition, and ability to attract followers. While Buggy may not have Roger's full strength and abilities, he did gain some vital traits that could help propel him toward his own dreams.
Just imagine what Buggy and Shanks could have accomplished if they had worked together. Buggy as the brains and Shanks as the muscle - they would've been unstoppable.
Buggy is such a well written character, also Buggy is such a goat for his willingness to support Shanks. You gotta have someone like Buggy in your life.

It was just insane by Buggy's perspective, how could his brother betray Roger's memory and legacy like that. How could his own brother basically spit on their adoptive fathers dreams. So he ran away from him and it basically crushed Buggy's own dreams. It's really damn weird that this seems like the lynchpin for Buggy's own skewed greedy life all the way up to orange town.

In a world where having dreams translate to success, that sacrifice essentially made Buggy dreamless, hence his downfall til he met Luffy again and saw Roger's hat. The hat reignited that dream.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Buggy is gonna be on Laugh Tale. Taking his whole journey as context the man will for sure looney tune his way into being in front of the one piece. Oda is gonna mock us and I’m here for it
You just made me realized, someone has to avenge Roger. Shanks has no interest so that leaves Buggy. So if Buggy arrives at Laugh Tale, it would make him feel that he finally met Rogers expectations. I’m hoping Buggy isn’t written as a braggert.
I'm fully convinced that when all is said and done the world will believe that Buggy found the One Piece. The major players will know the truth but *somehow* Buggy will be credited with the deed and be known as the new Pirate King. He's failed upward this far after all and it seems like exactly the sort of thing Oda would do.

Buggy's disappointment in Shanks is understandable. Because Buggy has witnessed that Shanks as all the potential to be the Pirate King. Shanks could have been the "Chosen One" as many thought Ace (before everyone knew he was Roger's son) had the best chance of taking the crown because he was one hell of a Rookie. But whatever last words Roger told Shanks, changed Shanks mind about pursuing it and put it on hold to Buggy's shock. And those final words are one of the biggest links (and mystery) that will fill in the gap of Shanks and Buggy's relationship. It's gonna be wild when they meet again. Shanks going for One Piece at last, and Buggy believing in his dream again despite the odds.
The odds are greatly stacked against Buggy. Shanks, Blackbeard and Luffy all have multiple Ponoglyph rubbings but Buggy has none. How he and Cross Guild manage to catch up will be an incredible tale

For me its what causes this sudden change in buggy. for the longest time its felt like buggy has always settled for any position he was in. He was happy "playing pirate" just like crocodile. not going after his dream and just enjoying a practical position of power. that is until he becomes recognized as a warlord. he doesn't know how but he is quite literally side by side with shanks after years and it sets a fire under him like nothing else.
THAT... also being humiliated and tortured by Mihawk and Croc every day when the entire crew respects HIM must have really pushed him over the edge. I love that he called the shot 😂
It never fails to amaze me how Oda is able to recontextualize past characters and events so seamlessly you'd really think he planned every detail since the beginning. Buggy is the perfect example: he's just a simple East Blue villain that gets defeated easily and doesn't leave a big impact on you. He's after treasure for treasure's sake. He doesn't have deeper motivations or a truly tragic backstory like the later villains. The only intriguing detail is his connection to Shanks, and it's that connection that first puts his character in a new light. When we learn that Shanks sailed on Roger's ship it's a big reveal but narratively it makes sense since Shanks is clearly important to the whole story. But then Buggy is mentioned and wait, Buggy? He sailed with the King of the Pirates?? That guy?? Suddenly he becomes more important in the reader's mind just because of his connection to other important characters. It makes him more intriguing: how could someone from the Pirate King's crew end up like that, unimportant, ambitionless and terrorizing small East Blue towns? But still, he's easy to dismiss as a joke character, a fun contrast and sometimes sidekick to Shanks. Then stuff happens and not only does he gain actual power in-universe because of those important connections and some luck, he also establishes himself better as an enjoyable character. And the escalation of his importance is funny at first, but then it keeps happening and now he's a yonko and wait, where is this going? And then this final piece is added and somehow it makes perfect sense with everything that came before. He put his dreams and hopes on Shanks and he lost it all. Of course he's so scorned at the concept of wanting to become Pirate King. Of course he settled for the easy pillaging of towns. And yet him regaining that flame of being a dreamer and wanting the One Piece is also perfect. Because he's always been the one pirate in the series who's cared the most about treasure, so of course he'd want the biggest treasure of all. And if there's one thing we know he has, it's the charisma to get people to follow him. So we're now in a situation where Buggy the Clown of Orange Town fame is unironically one of Luffy's serious biggest rivals in actually getting the One Piece. And it could not have been planned but the current importance of his character, even if not predictable from the start, is not sudden, just the opposite in fact. Oda took the bare bones of characterisation that were there at the start and used them to gradually give Buggy a fuller backstory, motivation, character depth, and a step-by-step road to power while keeping him consistent. Unbelievable.
Oda also did an amazing job with Arlong, Hatchan, and Jinbe. I never thought an arc could be so enhanced in distant retrospect, but wow, it really was.
Buggy was already a character I loved, but the chapter where the entire perception of his backstory flipped and we saw his true resolve, this put him on track to unironically become my favorite character period I love this silly little guy
The thing that worries me a lot, is that I don't think Shanks is aware of how much he hurt Buggy. He looks totally oblivious to it. He speaks about ( and to ) Buggy as if nothing had changed at all. Actually he behaves the exact same way towards Mihawk. I think Shanks broke a part of Buggy's and Mihawk's souls, and he GENUINELY doesn't know it.
I think that he couldn't tell Buggy the reason why he wasn't going for the One Piece straight away, it's definitely something to do with the last thing that Roger said to him, and Shanks was crying A LOT when he last spoke to Roger.
Tbh, Shanks doesn't have to feel anything about it, it's not his fault buggy was hurt by his decision. A man makes his life decisions for himself and he doesn't need to explain it to anyone and especially feel guilty about it.
While I absolutely adore Shanks for his connections to Luffy and love Buggy for the humour he brings to the series, I am very glad that Oda now is defining Shanks and Buggy outside of Luffy and in regards to each other. Its a delight to be reading this final saga.
I think the Buggy/Shanks falling out really mirrors the Usopp/Luffy falling out in Water 7. Buggy and Usopp both had assumptions about how their "Captain" would act in a certain situation and were let down. Shanks and Luffy both didn't really give much of an explanation for their actions at the time either.
The fact that Shanks is finally making his move and Buggy has already made his claim as well I feel like they’re absolutely going to end up on Laugh Tale at the same time and when they do… when I tell you I won’t be okay 😭
Seriously when I read this chapter I felt the heart break the tragedy! The panel of roger patting shanks hat possibly giving his hat to shanks in this moment and buggy just in the back watching them is too sad

I used to look at Luffy and hate his smile because I thought it was so stupid. This was before I started watching One Piece, it was an art style thing. Now I look at his smile, and it's one of my favorite things ever, as he is now my favorite character ever. The characters are definitely one of my favorite key things in this series. I keep finding myself watching little moments like Zoro testing his luck, Robin having a childlike imagination, etc. They're just so fun and cute and cool.
I really came around to Buggy during Impel down, Marinefors saga. And then to see him leverage that to Warlord. I knew, this mans, really does have that same incredible power that Mihawks mentioned. To make allys anywhere. He is remarkable in that he is not physically powerful but his wits and charm propel him far
@@blackmage665 All Ive seen that he have small fleet near "Elbaf", and its just because that island in particular is under his protection, Luffy in comparison have between 5000 - 10000 ppl who are ready at any time to help him (after liberation of Dressrosa), although Shanks is very strong but people dont know his whereabouts, unlike in the Luffy case.

Honestly, the past chapters have really breathed new life into Sabo for me. We already had Ace as Luffy's well-mannered hothead of an older brother, but now Sabo really distinguished himself being able to prioritize and make compromises for the greater good (such as the truth of Cobra's death)
i simply love Buggy since the first chapter I read(I started reading during Impel Down's arc and then went back to read from the start) and i always got the impression that Buggy was always on the brink of something, some change, some secret, I always saw so much potential in him if he took himself seriously and when that chapter came up and Buggy finally took that step, when he really took himself seriously, when he really shouted his biggest wish I cried, I cried a lot ! Buggy is my Captain !!!
I think there’s a good comparison between Shanks and 3D2Y. In the latter Luffy put his dream on pause, but with the goal of meeting up on a set day and continuing it. Even when Luffy is shaken to his core he still doesn’t truly lose sight of his dream. While Shanks speaks as if he’s not sure when he’ll continue his dream. Almost opening up the possibility of never going after the One Piece. Even if it turns out Shanks needed to wait for a certain event to occur, it is still about his mindset being weaker than Luffy’s
which is basically saying that haki haki is when you believe in your dream and that when conquerors occurs, its because others believe in it shanks has shown to have the most powerful conqueror stance ever but do we ever see him use basic armament or advanced? he probably believes in his cause way less than other people do, but he is still terrifying to them LOL.
Man im so happy you made a video about buggy because your character analysis are like candy to a toddler. i love him as a character and his abilities i fell in love with him when i saw him on screen in loge town before i even knew anything about one piece ( my brother was watching it and i joined later ) this is my first “thanks”/ paid comment and im glad its under a video about buggy D clown.
That chapter hit me in place where I just look at Buggy with a great amount of respect, I can't wait to to see this scene animated. When he was shouting out to everyone about their dreams, the Overtaken track was playing in my head which made it more impactful, and teared up alittle.
I’ve been a huge fan of Buggy from the start, since most of his appearances in the series had me laughing in tears, but chapter 1082 gave me so much more respect for him as a character. Now he might genuinely be my favorite character in the entire series
I remember a while back I tried to search a Buggy essay, theories about him and shanks and what happened between them(before the reveal) but I was met with great disappointment. (To the point that i turned towards Fanfiction in search of answers, and absolutely nobody thought about Shanks of all people throwing away his dream) This has been a video I basically wanted to watch for some years now! In fact every video I watch from your channel truly gets me emotional and reminds me of how much I love One Piece, how it's more then it seems, but this takes the crown for me, maybe it's cause I'm a big fan of Buggy's and Shanks' and their whole brotherhood, but the dephs you go to explain and makes us feel what YOU felt reading the manga is truly fascinating for me, it was breath-taking to see someone fangirl over them like I did for years!! I remember how confused I was when watching Marineford and seeing Buggy quarrel with Shanks, that moment was the one that made me believe something more important was going on, I also find it funny that Buggy still obeyed Shanks and handed the hat over to the submarine, despite him calling Shanks his enemy, and then he was surprised that there was no map, it was like he didn't expected Shanks to LIE TO HIM. I want to see them interact more 😭
I was not a fan of Buggy even when he had such a huge fan following, but after recent chapters, I am honestly rooting for him! The guy gave up his dreams for Shanks, in his heart he accepted him to be better and backed down, but now, seeing Shanks make a move, he is not backing down from him anymore. Buggy has finally reignited the dream that died down.
Your video about Sanji, highlighting just how genuine and caring of a person Luffy is when he told Sanji "that's just the way you are", shot Luffy right up to one of my favorite characters ever. All it took was to be reminded just how powerful that moment was to realize Luffy has always been like that, and I love him. What a treasure.
I always joked about Buggy being the best character ever, the one to find the One Piece, etc. That chapter though? It hit different. Brought me to tears. I genuinely felt his plight and every word in his speech resonated to my soul. Even a guy like Buggy had dreams? I never expected that man. One Piece is really something special. I cannot imagine what it'll be like once it's gone.
Even with his habit of failing upwards, one thing I've always noticed about Buggy, and which Mihawk and Crocodile clearly underestimated, is Buggy's charisma. While Luffy is legit strong _and_ charismatic, Buggy is weak, _knows_ he's weak, but also intentionally or not manages to inspire genuine loyalty from… uh… total lunkheads way more powerful than him. Plus, dude made it a pretty long way through the Grand Line with his OG crew before he got caught & sent to Impel Down.
There's a lot of parallels between Buggy and Ussop. What would happen if Luffy suddenly decided to quit being the Pirate King? How did Ussop react when Luffy decided to scuttle the Going Merry? Damn similar reaction Buggy had with Shanks.
If I may speak in all honesty, Im a very unga bunga One Piece fan. I love the fight scenes a LOT and I think I really only register character development when I’m slapped in the face by it. So thanks Melon, for allowing my tiny brain to enjoy this series even more.
In a strange roundabout way, you're actually the reason I read One Piece! Your watching of it made my best friend re-read it, whose talk about it then convinced me to read it. So, thank you! Both for that and the wonderful videos that you've made. You do really have exceptional and insightful takes about this silly pirate manga that I love too much.
As a Buggy fan, your description of all of Buggy's events I felt was a great insight and truth description to what really happened. The love whether brotherly or something else between shanks and buggy was so powerful, and so strong that Buggy was willing to give up his dream to help and follow Shanks.
Long time Buggy D. Clown dick rider here: This chapter really expanded on Buggy as a character and made me fall in love with him even more than I already had. His speech inspiring his crew genuinely made me cry and gave me the same feel as Erwin's speech in season 3 of Attack on Titan. It filled me with so much hype, pride, and determination. I felt like I was a part of Buggy's crew. I wanted to set sail and find the One Piece. I thought about if I would be satisfied with my life if I died tomorrow. I wanted to follow my dreams. It made me reflect on all of my life choices just like Buggy did. That chapter really made me feel like we are now in a "race for the One Piece" phase. It feels like every Yonko is on the move and determined. I have a new spark and excitement for the coming arcs. This chapter made me go from wanting Buggy to become King of The Pirates as a funny Oda joke to piss off Buggy haters/people who don't understand the childlike cartoon freedom themes of One Piece, to me wanting Buggy to become King of the Pirates because he is genuinely a good character that I love and am attached to. Just like you said, I want him to succeed. I want to see Buggy follow his dreams and accomplish his primal desires of being free and living a life worth living, not regretting anything in the end. I cannot wait to see where Oda takes my favorite character. I have faith that Oda will do him justice and leave me very satisfied and happy.
I caught up with the manga and I can say with complete honesty that Buggy is one of my favourite characters. His moment of remembering his dream was honestly so good, I'd say it's on the level of Luffy realising he still has his friends. Is Buggy's revelation as emotional? No, but it's the fact he finally puts his money where his mouth is and remembers what he wanted more than anything. With tears in his eyes and snot in his nose, he unashamedly declares to two men stronger than him that they basically have no idea what it means to really be pirates anymore, and plays them. Mihawk and Crocodile can't do anything if they want to keep Cross Guild, since every member also wants to find the One Piece WITH Buggy. It's just the fact that Buggy didn't back down for once, he announced his dream with full intent of death. That's the kind of guy that I could see being on Roger's ship, not the coward who never committed to anything if his victory wasn't 100%, but a man who knows he's going to die, yet speaks anyway because it's what he honestly believes. I genuinely want Buggy to find the One Piece before Luffy, not only is it just plain funny but it seems Luffy's dream isn't exactly finding the One Piece anyway. Buggy for Pirate King!
I love the perfect balance between objectivity and irony in Buggy calling Shanks a coward for not taking the throne. While Buggy is a coward who avoids fights and doesn't have the confidence to believe in himself and where he came from, there's something to be said about Buggy never giving up on his dreams while Shanks was the one who decided not to follow in Roger's footsteps. We obviously don't know Shanks' reasons, but he easily could've been the next King. Buggy kind of has a point. "For a true hero isn't measured by the size of their strength, but by the strength of their heart." Buggy still hasn't lost his will to become the King. He's going to awaken the most lethal Conqueror's Haki soon and take what is rightfully his, the throne. Buggy is the real JoyBoy and the people's champ! 💪🤡👑.
I remember reading this Buggy part through snot and tears. Seeing how much faith Buggy had in Shanks and it getting shattered, hurt a lot. I'm sure Buggy felt betrayed in that moment, which was definitely not helped by the fact that the both of them had just witnessed the execution of Roger - their captain, and their dad. I feel like while Buggy has been underestimating himself and settling for less than ambitious position on these years, Shanks somewhere always believed in him and believed they both would make it to Laughtale as captains in their own right. Going ahead I do hope Buggy and Shanks meet either on the way to Laughtale or on Laughtale and team up even perhaps against some threat - possibly Blackbeard, or the Strawhats. I am so glad we got this emotional and vulnerable side to Buggy and to see this fire and steel in him to stand up to croccy and hawky and call them out on their bs. There is a strength to Buggy that everyone, including he himself is unaware of. Because you cannot just survive on the pirate king's ship as a mere child and then survive on your own in the world when you are one of the few only surviving legacy of the mortal enemy of the marines.
It's always a treat when you make a One Piece essay that isn't focused on the Straw Hats. Obviously they're our main characters, but so many characters in this franchise have such deep stories to tell. It's refreshing to see these essays, keep up the good work!
I always love Buggy from the beginning. He was a character who I always thought was fun and was hilarious everytime on screen. But Chapter 1082 made even love him even more. His story was both heartwarming and tragic and I'm genuinely in full support of him wanting to be Pirate King.
The battle royal between Buggy D Clown v. Go D Usopp v. Ask D Question v. Down D. Stairs will be the best fight in One Piece. Nothing else in manga will compare

honestly, this chapter impacted me. I've realized I was comfortably seeing buggy as a big joke all this time and now I'm forced to /feel/ things for him and see there's more to his arc; and it genuinely made me uncomfortable when I noticed there'd be no way back to writing him off as a clever joke. When Buggy proclaimed he wants to be the pirate king in front of crocodile and mihawk. That took some big red shiny clown balls. I was so proud of him when he said that I couldn't help but laugh super heartily like Luffy does when Coby stands up to Alvida. Was just so heartwarming to see him be genuine with himself for the first time in the modern era.

I’ll always love me some Buggy content 🤡 Regarding your Shanks questions at the end of the video - the same way Crocus was conveniently positioned at the beginning of the Grand Line and Rayleigh at the beginning of the New World, I believe Roger instructed Shanks to wait to make his “move for the One Piece” until the Joyboy of 20 years in the future made his appearance. Shanks may hold some final key of Laugh Tale needed for the One Piece to be realized. The remnants of the Roger pirates may all be guiding Joyboy candidates to the treasure they were too early to receive themselves.
AHHHHH!!! I WAS LITERALLY PRAYING THE NIGHT BEFORE THE CHAPTER FOR A BUGGY CHAPTER!!!! I WAS SOBBING IN MY BED HOPING FOR MORE BUGGY AND SHANKS CONTENT…. AND THEN!!!! IT HAPPENED AAHHHH!!!! The next day the chapter scanlations released early on TCB, and I set aside my whole night to reading the chapter, and it took me like an hour to get through it because I had to keep pausing my read because I was getting too overwhelmed with emotions. I SHRIEKED when I saw buggy after the whole marine discussion, but when I saw that we were going to talk about the shanks and buggy flashback??? I had to full on walk out my room and have a stroke. AAAAAAAAA!!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I HAD FIXATED ON THAT FLASHBACK BEFORE THIS CHAPTER RELEASE! Shanks just always looked kinda sad to me when talking about buggy leaving him, and the fact that Shanks even asked and begged for buggy to join him in the first place really got to me. Pair that with the fact that whitebeard always saw shanks WITH buggy, suggesting that they were always together, or paired together often enough to be THE dynamic duo. So… The fact that THE flashback was being brought up again, I WAS BALLISTIC. I think the world went silent when my eyes glazed over the panel where Buggy screamed out his line about the one piece. THAT GUY IN BUGGY’S AUDIENCE SAYING HE WASN’T READY TO HAVE HIS DREAMS REVIVED WAS LITERALLY ME MAN. I WAS NOT READY FOR THAT ABSOLUTE BANGER OF A LINE HOOOOOO BOY. I just had to pause to continue bawling my eyes out. I have never cried SO MUCH when reading a new chapter. I have only caught up like just over half a year ago, so the week to week chapter read is still relatively new to me- and I only started reading the chapters completely blind (with no spoilers) like a month before that buggy chapter. I am SO GLAD I read it blind though, that was one of the chapters that made me seriously appreciate being caught up and experiencing that magical moment with everyone else…. wow…. Truly an amazing chapter for buggy fans all over the world
Over the years Buggy went from "oh, he's kinda funny" to jokingly saying "yeah, Buggy D. Goat! That's my captain" to now, after a lot of personal revelation, I can wholeheartedly say Buggy is a top tier favorite, probably #2 next to Whitebeard. Mostly because I can really relate to him, supporting people who shine bright at the cost of your own light. This video really put the puzzle pieces together an helped me form my thoughts after that chapter, cause I kept thinking about it. I say this unironically: even it's just a page, half-page or a single panel, I want Buggy to be king.
I think you missed something, lets not forget that Shanks gave up the opportunity to go to laughtale and finish out the final voyage with Roger for buggy, and in part I believe that buggys agitation toward shanks is due to his own self hatred that he cost his best friend the chance to go to laughtale, then hearing shanks' sudden loss in motivation for going for the one piece, Buggy might think he is the reason for shanks, the man who he thought would be the next king of the pirates, was put at a disadvatage.
I've been a Buggy fan for a long long time, and every new mention and development of him brings a huge smile to my face. And it just keeps happening! I've heard from somewhere that Buggy is one of Oda's faivorite characters, and while I don't know if that's true, it really does feel that way. I can't wait to see what happens next, in this wondreous tale of Buggy the clown :D
Buggy's been my favorite non-strawhat since impel down. I also feel like marineford and impel down changed buggy's perspective on his old best friend. Being aware of the powers at play that he wasn't fully aware of as a teen on the oro jackson probably changed his perspective of shanks, Roger, and himself. I also feel like buggy staying in the weakest sea for so long really showed he was almost reluctant to grow up, clinging to ideals he built as a ypung adult. It's like staying in the starting area of an rpg.

The funny thing about Shanks vs Luffy is that Shanks is often portrayed as making most people give up on their goals of becoming the best while Luffy reignites their dreams. Heck, Luffy got Buggy to travel into the Grandline, got Rob Lucci to train to get stronger, and got Katakuri to put aside his family's safety just maintain a fair fight with someone he respected

I think there's way more to talk about the deep significance of Shanks and Buggy's relationship. Because we still don't know exactly how they ended up on Roger's ship. We know that Shank was found as a baby in a chest in God Valley. This + the Figarland name hints towards Shanks being a Celestial Dragon from God Valley. But then we have to wonder how Buggy was found too. Since they have the same age, and that Roger was talking about holding two babies in Oden's flashback, it's possible that Buggy was also found in God Valley. Then, in my opinion, there's three possibilities : - Buggy is a celestial dragon just like Shanks. But then we have to wonder if he's from the same family as Shanks or not. Buggy having a red nose and blue hair doesn't really match with Shanks. He could be a son of another celestial dragon family living in God Valley. - Buggy could also be the son of a random pirate from Rocks D. Xebec crew who was found abandoned by Roger's crew after the battle. - But the most interesting theory imo is Buggy being a D. and then being Rocks D. Xebec's son (since Xebec is the only D. on God Valley besides Roger and Garp). Buggy being a D. makes a lot of sense imo because whatever he does he ends up representing a major threat to the government. His luck, his natural leadership and his ambition hint towards the fact that Buggy is a D. Just like Blackbeard and Luffy, Buggy is a leader and has a lot of luck. On the new yonkos reveals, Shanks is the only one who isn't smiling/laughing and we know that the smile and the laugh is a D. thing. But if Buggy is a D. and Shanks a celestial dragon, what does it mean for their relationship ? Well, Buggy and Shanks' relationship has always been a mix between friendship and conflict (I'm thinking about their argument about what's the coldest between the north pole and the south pole). This relationship could symbolize the conflict but also the reunion between the Celestial dragons and the D. clan. I hope my theory is correct because it would be dope 😅.
Great theory ! You forgot the darkest, and in my opinion the most interesting option : Buggy is a slave's son. It would put his relationship with Shanks into perspective and even explain his red nose and why he hates it: his parents were bought for this funny genetic trait.
This revelation was so perfect to me because finally Buggy makes sense. I've always loved him, but I loved Shanks too, and it felt very petty that Buggy hated him for just the fruit thing, it made no sense he would be THIS bitter over it years later, he just doesn't feel like a resentful character. But this would be the biggest betrayal ever, it makes complete sense Buggy would still resent Shanks for just abandoning their goals and objectives
I have always loved buggy and I've been certain ever since his and Shanks meeting at marineford that they were actually VERY close friends. 1082 was just the ultimate validating chapter for me, and it made me so happy for the narrative to actually take him seriously, finally. I can't wait for whatever it is oda has in store for my boy.
Buggy was the first villain I ever saw as a teenager aiming to fill the void DBZ left as it ended. Seeing him get this development is just the best. His failing upwards was fantastic, but this...this is beautiful!!
Now that I've finished the video, I just want to say I find it very fascinating the parallels between Luffy and Usopp and Shanks and Buggy. Not only from their character designs (Luffy is literally young Shanks with black hair and both Usopp and Buggy have "goofy" noses and roundish eyes), but their dynamic as children and personalities match up too, which I something I never really thought about. I find it interesting that if we, as you said, put Luffy in this situation, I feel Usopp's reaction would be almost exactly the same as Buggy's. I think this is pretty neat that Oda most likely intentionally created these parallels to further cement the closeness Shanks and Buggy had with one another since Oda repeatedly hammers home that Luffy considers Usopp his best friend as far as who he likes to spend time with and they being the same age. Oda back at it again with this absolute banger writing
honestly never thought of that but your right. like when usopp became god usopp it honestly really similar to a lot of buggy moments, where they didnt mean to but they ended up inspireing and rallying a shit ton of people on accident witch also makes me think we see how powerful that can be from luffy and usopp doing it on accident but if buggy uses this power more on purpose i have non doubt he could be one of the strongest characters in the serires. because Roger had this power and he used in cleaverly on purpose witch inspired the whole world!! buggy might be the only other person who could do that not even luffy i say this beacuse luffy does it more passivly but not on pupose. so if buggy uses this gift in a clever way like gold roger did hes gonna be unironicly i one of the toughest emperors despite not having shown any control over haki.

The Buggy Chapter just solidified my love. I love the concept of buggy, his archetype, his aesthetics, all that. But finally, FINALLY getting him speaking from his heart and showing his own prideful declaration to be king of the pirates just made me ball

I know a lot of the series. Had friends whove been into OP for plural decades. So just getting into it for real myself last year...im enjoying doing just 2 eps a week. I feel like if this show is supposed to be a modern day odessy it should almost feel like one
that chapter also brought tears to my eyes and you talking about it also brought tears to my eyes. i didn't really care about buggy when i was a kid but as the series went on i grew to consider him one of the best characters in the series. when the timeskip first came out i somehow missed the parts with buggy and for literally over a decade i realized "wait wtf...i've never seen buggy post timeskip." so i looked him up and saw how big he was and was like "wtf was he just eating for 2 years and got big and fat?" and finding out the truth was that instead of training for 2 years, all he did was put on a giant curtain and trick people into following under him believing he was all big and powerful was the funniest shit to me and elevated him to one of my favorite characters.
It's interesting to see you say that Shanks was so shaken by Roger's execution that he gave up. My understanding of that moment was that he knew something that made him change his mind. That's why he never went after One Piece until now, i think. He was waiting for the right time, the time Roger was too early for, and maybe deterring others in the meantime.

That chapter made me go from wanting to keep laughing along as Buggy stumbles his way up the ladder, to wanting to see Buggy earnestly live up to his new mantle as an Emperor of the Sea. I love Buggy because, even if he isn't great in the way his underlings think he is, he is still great through cunning and sheer charisma. Once the shock and humor of Buggy being declared an Emperor wore off, it occurred to me that he actually does deserve that spot even if it was largely the World Government's fault that he got there. By gaming the Warlord system, he was able to put together a staggering "mercenary" fleet, and make a boatload of cash. By taking his warlord status away, the government basically turned Privateer Buggy back into Pirate Buggy. They turned his giant mercenary fleet, much of which he was able to gather up because of his legal protection, into a giant pirate fleet. They turned his banked up capital into a bona fide war chest. I love that Buggy doesn't have the combat prowess of a Kaido, or a Shanks, but he is still smart enough to seize opportunities that have turned him into an Emperor level threat.
Personally im very impressed by the fact that One Piece is able to add so much plot into a character that doesnt even have anything to do with the main cast, a factor which I think, really puts One Piece up there in world building

There’s a cover story where Miss Goldenweek attempted to break out her Baroque Works comrades and like half of them escaped but before leaving, she used the rainbow color of dreams to reveal Crocodile and Mr 1’s dreams which were a superhero and Pirate King respectfully. So yes that line definitely must’ve stung him.
I love how Buggy told Crocoboy and Mihawk "You can kill me if you want, I won't back down on it" and it wasn't just talk. He knows he's helplessly weak compared to them, he knows they can kill him with no hesitation, and yet he put his foot down, challenged their way of seeing the world and proved to us, that despite his weakness, trickery and once again weakness, he is actually THE perfect Captain for Crocodile and Mihawk, and other pirates of their kind like Moria- because if there is one person who can reawaken their dreams, IT IS HIM!

Buggy did inherited some of Roger's charisma and personality traits.
1. Buggy has a natural ability to attract followers and form alliances, just like Roger. Both were able to gather large crews and gain loyal subordinates through their charisma and personality.
2. Buggy has a sense of humor and enjoys having fun, just like Roger. They both don't take themselves too seriously and know how to keep the mood light. This makes them more likeable and charming.
3. Buggy has a bold and daring personality, willing to take risks. This is similar to Roger's own adventurous and fearless spirit. They both seek excitement.
4. Buggy has big dreams and ambitions, wanting to become Pirate King. This shows he inherited some of Roger's own desire for freedom and quest for the ultimate treasure. Their ambitions drive them forward.
5. Buggy has a certain flair for the dramatic and enjoys being the center of attention. This shows some of Roger's own showmanship and love of putting on a performance for crowds. They both crave the spotlight.

It was just insane by Buggy's perspective, how could his brother betray Roger's memory and legacy like that. How could his own brother basically spit on their adoptive fathers dreams. So he ran away from him and it basically crushed Buggy's own dreams.
It's really damn weird that this seems like the lynchpin for Buggy's own skewed greedy life all the way up to orange town.

Buggy's disappointment in Shanks is understandable. Because Buggy has witnessed that Shanks as all the potential to be the Pirate King. Shanks could have been the "Chosen One" as many thought Ace (before everyone knew he was Roger's son) had the best chance of taking the crown because he was one hell of a Rookie. But whatever last words Roger told Shanks, changed Shanks mind about pursuing it and put it on hold to Buggy's shock. And those final words are one of the biggest links (and mystery) that will fill in the gap of Shanks and Buggy's relationship.
It's gonna be wild when they meet again. Shanks going for One Piece at last, and Buggy believing in his dream again despite the odds.
The odds are greatly stacked against Buggy. Shanks, Blackbeard and Luffy all have multiple Ponoglyph rubbings but Buggy has none. How he and Cross Guild manage to catch up will be an incredible tale

For me its what causes this sudden change in buggy. for the longest time its felt like buggy has always settled for any position he was in. He was happy "playing pirate" just like crocodile. not going after his dream and just enjoying a practical position of power. that is until he becomes recognized as a warlord. he doesn't know how but he is quite literally side by side with shanks after years and it sets a fire under him like nothing else.

I love how whenever Buggy is brought up, Shanks is always happy and smiling, really goes to show how deep their friendship goes
It never fails to amaze me how Oda is able to recontextualize past characters and events so seamlessly you'd really think he planned every detail since the beginning. Buggy is the perfect example: he's just a simple East Blue villain that gets defeated easily and doesn't leave a big impact on you. He's after treasure for treasure's sake. He doesn't have deeper motivations or a truly tragic backstory like the later villains. The only intriguing detail is his connection to Shanks, and it's that connection that first puts his character in a new light. When we learn that Shanks sailed on Roger's ship it's a big reveal but narratively it makes sense since Shanks is clearly important to the whole story. But then Buggy is mentioned and wait, Buggy? He sailed with the King of the Pirates?? That guy?? Suddenly he becomes more important in the reader's mind just because of his connection to other important characters. It makes him more intriguing: how could someone from the Pirate King's crew end up like that, unimportant, ambitionless and terrorizing small East Blue towns? But still, he's easy to dismiss as a joke character, a fun contrast and sometimes sidekick to Shanks. Then stuff happens and not only does he gain actual power in-universe because of those important connections and some luck, he also establishes himself better as an enjoyable character. And the escalation of his importance is funny at first, but then it keeps happening and now he's a yonko and wait, where is this going? And then this final piece is added and somehow it makes perfect sense with everything that came before. He put his dreams and hopes on Shanks and he lost it all. Of course he's so scorned at the concept of wanting to become Pirate King. Of course he settled for the easy pillaging of towns. And yet him regaining that flame of being a dreamer and wanting the One Piece is also perfect. Because he's always been the one pirate in the series who's cared the most about treasure, so of course he'd want the biggest treasure of all. And if there's one thing we know he has, it's the charisma to get people to follow him. So we're now in a situation where Buggy the Clown of Orange Town fame is unironically one of Luffy's serious biggest rivals in actually getting the One Piece. And it could not have been planned but the current importance of his character, even if not predictable from the start, is not sudden, just the opposite in fact. Oda took the bare bones of characterisation that were there at the start and used them to gradually give Buggy a fuller backstory, motivation, character depth, and a step-by-step road to power while keeping him consistent. Unbelievable.

Oda also did an amazing job with Arlong, Hatchan, and Jinbe. I never thought an arc could be so enhanced in distant retrospect, but wow, it really was.
Buggy was already a character I loved, but the chapter where the entire perception of his backstory flipped and we saw his true resolve, this put him on track to unironically become my favorite character period

The thing that worries me a lot, is that I don't think Shanks is aware of how much he hurt Buggy. He looks totally oblivious to it. He speaks about ( and to ) Buggy as if nothing had changed at all. Actually he behaves the exact same way towards Mihawk. I think Shanks broke a part of Buggy's and Mihawk's souls, and he GENUINELY doesn't know it.
I think that he couldn't tell Buggy the reason why he wasn't going for the One Piece straight away, it's definitely something to do with the last thing that Roger said to him, and Shanks was crying A LOT when he last spoke to Roger.

Tbh, Shanks doesn't have to feel anything about it, it's not his fault buggy was hurt by his decision. A man makes his life decisions for himself and he doesn't need to explain it to anyone and especially feel guilty about it.
While I absolutely adore Shanks for his connections to Luffy and love Buggy for the humour he brings to the series, I am very glad that Oda now is defining Shanks and Buggy outside of Luffy and in regards to each other. Its a delight to be reading this final saga.
I always saw Buggy and Shanks as bickering brothers, with a lot of guilt that has burdened their relationship.
I think the Buggy/Shanks falling out really mirrors the Usopp/Luffy falling out in Water 7. Buggy and Usopp both had assumptions about how their "Captain" would act in a certain situation and were let down. Shanks and Luffy both didn't really give much of an explanation for their actions at the time either.
The fact that Shanks is finally making his move and Buggy has already made his claim as well I feel like they’re absolutely going to end up on Laugh Tale at the same time and when they do… when I tell you I won’t be okay 😭

a couple of panels totally reframing every single action of a character we've been with for decades in a way that makes perfect sense. it's just god-level writing
I used to look at Luffy and hate his smile because I thought it was so stupid. This was before I started watching One Piece, it was an art style thing. Now I look at his smile, and it's one of my favorite things ever, as he is now my favorite character ever. The characters are definitely one of my favorite key things in this series. I keep finding myself watching little moments like Zoro testing his luck, Robin having a childlike imagination, etc. They're just so fun and cute and cool.

@@blackmage665 All Ive seen that he have small fleet near "Elbaf", and its just because that island in particular is under his protection, Luffy in comparison have between 5000 - 10000 ppl who are ready at any time to help him (after liberation of Dressrosa), although Shanks is very strong but people dont know his whereabouts, unlike in the Luffy case.

Honestly, the past chapters have really breathed new life into Sabo for me. We already had Ace as Luffy's well-mannered hothead of an older brother, but now Sabo really distinguished himself being able to prioritize and make compromises for the greater good (such as the truth of Cobra's death)
i simply love Buggy since the first chapter I read(I started reading during Impel Down's arc and then went back to read from the start) and i always got the impression that Buggy was always on the brink of something, some change, some secret, I always saw so much potential in him if he took himself seriously and when that chapter came up and Buggy finally took that step, when he really took himself seriously, when he really shouted his biggest wish I cried, I cried a lot ! Buggy is my Captain !!!
I think there’s a good comparison between Shanks and 3D2Y. In the latter Luffy put his dream on pause, but with the goal of meeting up on a set day and continuing it. Even when Luffy is shaken to his core he still doesn’t truly lose sight of his dream. While Shanks speaks as if he’s not sure when he’ll continue his dream. Almost opening up the possibility of never going after the One Piece. Even if it turns out Shanks needed to wait for a certain event to occur, it is still about his mindset being weaker than Luffy’s

Man im so happy you made a video about buggy because your character analysis are like candy to a toddler. i love him as a character and his abilities i fell in love with him when i saw him on screen in loge town before i even knew anything about one piece ( my brother was watching it and i joined later ) this is my first “thanks”/ paid comment and im glad its under a video about buggy D clown.
That chapter hit me in place where I just look at Buggy with a great amount of respect, I can't wait to to see this scene animated. When he was shouting out to everyone about their dreams, the Overtaken track was playing in my head which made it more impactful, and teared up alittle.
I’ve been a huge fan of Buggy from the start, since most of his appearances in the series had me laughing in tears, but chapter 1082 gave me so much more respect for him as a character. Now he might genuinely be my favorite character in the entire series
I remember a while back I tried to search a Buggy essay, theories about him and shanks and what happened between them(before the reveal) but I was met with great disappointment. (To the point that i turned towards Fanfiction in search of answers, and absolutely nobody thought about Shanks of all people throwing away his dream) This has been a video I basically wanted to watch for some years now! In fact every video I watch from your channel truly gets me emotional and reminds me of how much I love One Piece, how it's more then it seems, but this takes the crown for me, maybe it's cause I'm a big fan of Buggy's and Shanks' and their whole brotherhood, but the dephs you go to explain and makes us feel what YOU felt reading the manga is truly fascinating for me, it was breath-taking to see someone fangirl over them like I did for years!!
I remember how confused I was when watching Marineford and seeing Buggy quarrel with Shanks, that moment was the one that made me believe something more important was going on, I also find it funny that Buggy still obeyed Shanks and handed the hat over to the submarine, despite him calling Shanks his enemy, and then he was surprised that there was no map, it was like he didn't expected Shanks to LIE TO HIM. I want to see them interact more 😭
I was not a fan of Buggy even when he had such a huge fan following, but after recent chapters, I am honestly rooting for him!
The guy gave up his dreams for Shanks, in his heart he accepted him to be better and backed down, but now, seeing Shanks make a move, he is not backing down from him anymore. Buggy has finally reignited the dream that died down.

I always joked about Buggy being the best character ever, the one to find the One Piece, etc. That chapter though? It hit different. Brought me to tears. I genuinely felt his plight and every word in his speech resonated to my soul. Even a guy like Buggy had dreams? I never expected that man. One Piece is really something special. I cannot imagine what it'll be like once it's gone.
Even with his habit of failing upwards, one thing I've always noticed about Buggy, and which Mihawk and Crocodile clearly underestimated, is Buggy's charisma. While Luffy is legit strong _and_ charismatic, Buggy is weak, _knows_ he's weak, but also intentionally or not manages to inspire genuine loyalty from… uh… total lunkheads way more powerful than him.
Plus, dude made it a pretty long way through the Grand Line with his OG crew before he got caught & sent to Impel Down.
There's a lot of parallels between Buggy and Ussop. What would happen if Luffy suddenly decided to quit being the Pirate King? How did Ussop react when Luffy decided to scuttle the Going Merry? Damn similar reaction Buggy had with Shanks.
If I may speak in all honesty, Im a very unga bunga One Piece fan. I love the fight scenes a LOT and I think I really only register character development when I’m slapped in the face by it. So thanks Melon, for allowing my tiny brain to enjoy this series even more.

Both for that and the wonderful videos that you've made. You do really have exceptional and insightful takes about this silly pirate manga that I love too much.
As a Buggy fan, your description of all of Buggy's events I felt was a great insight and truth description to what really happened. The love whether brotherly or something else between shanks and buggy was so powerful, and so strong that Buggy was willing to give up his dream to help and follow Shanks.
Long time Buggy D. Clown dick rider here: This chapter really expanded on Buggy as a character and made me fall in love with him even more than I already had. His speech inspiring his crew genuinely made me cry and gave me the same feel as Erwin's speech in season 3 of Attack on Titan. It filled me with so much hype, pride, and determination. I felt like I was a part of Buggy's crew. I wanted to set sail and find the One Piece. I thought about if I would be satisfied with my life if I died tomorrow. I wanted to follow my dreams. It made me reflect on all of my life choices just like Buggy did. That chapter really made me feel like we are now in a "race for the One Piece" phase. It feels like every Yonko is on the move and determined. I have a new spark and excitement for the coming arcs. This chapter made me go from wanting Buggy to become King of The Pirates as a funny Oda joke to piss off Buggy haters/people who don't understand the childlike cartoon freedom themes of One Piece, to me wanting Buggy to become King of the Pirates because he is genuinely a good character that I love and am attached to. Just like you said, I want him to succeed. I want to see Buggy follow his dreams and accomplish his primal desires of being free and living a life worth living, not regretting anything in the end. I cannot wait to see where Oda takes my favorite character. I have faith that Oda will do him justice and leave me very satisfied and happy.

I caught up with the manga and I can say with complete honesty that Buggy is one of my favourite characters. His moment of remembering his dream was honestly so good, I'd say it's on the level of Luffy realising he still has his friends. Is Buggy's revelation as emotional? No, but it's the fact he finally puts his money where his mouth is and remembers what he wanted more than anything. With tears in his eyes and snot in his nose, he unashamedly declares to two men stronger than him that they basically have no idea what it means to really be pirates anymore, and plays them. Mihawk and Crocodile can't do anything if they want to keep Cross Guild, since every member also wants to find the One Piece WITH Buggy. It's just the fact that Buggy didn't back down for once, he announced his dream with full intent of death. That's the kind of guy that I could see being on Roger's ship, not the coward who never committed to anything if his victory wasn't 100%, but a man who knows he's going to die, yet speaks anyway because it's what he honestly believes. I genuinely want Buggy to find the One Piece before Luffy, not only is it just plain funny but it seems Luffy's dream isn't exactly finding the One Piece anyway. Buggy for Pirate King!
I love the perfect balance between objectivity and irony in Buggy calling Shanks a coward for not taking the throne. While Buggy is a coward who avoids fights and doesn't have the confidence to believe in himself and where he came from, there's something to be said about Buggy never giving up on his dreams while Shanks was the one who decided not to follow in Roger's footsteps. We obviously don't know Shanks' reasons, but he easily could've been the next King. Buggy kind of has a point.

He's going to awaken the most lethal Conqueror's Haki soon and take what is rightfully his, the throne. Buggy is the real JoyBoy and the people's champ! 💪🤡👑.
I remember reading this Buggy part through snot and tears. Seeing how much faith Buggy had in Shanks and it getting shattered, hurt a lot. I'm sure Buggy felt betrayed in that moment, which was definitely not helped by the fact that the both of them had just witnessed the execution of Roger - their captain, and their dad. I feel like while Buggy has been underestimating himself and settling for less than ambitious position on these years, Shanks somewhere always believed in him and believed they both would make it to Laughtale as captains in their own right. Going ahead I do hope Buggy and Shanks meet either on the way to Laughtale or on Laughtale and team up even perhaps against some threat - possibly Blackbeard, or the Strawhats. I am so glad we got this emotional and vulnerable side to Buggy and to see this fire and steel in him to stand up to croccy and hawky and call them out on their bs. There is a strength to Buggy that everyone, including he himself is unaware of. Because you cannot just survive on the pirate king's ship as a mere child and then survive on your own in the world when you are one of the few only surviving legacy of the mortal enemy of the marines.
It's always a treat when you make a One Piece essay that isn't focused on the Straw Hats. Obviously they're our main characters, but so many characters in this franchise have such deep stories to tell. It's refreshing to see these essays, keep up the good work!
I always love Buggy from the beginning. He was a character who I always thought was fun and was hilarious everytime on screen. But Chapter 1082 made even love him even more. His story was both heartwarming and tragic and I'm genuinely in full support of him wanting to be Pirate King.

I've realized I was comfortably seeing buggy as a big joke all this time and now I'm forced to /feel/ things for him and see there's more to his arc; and it genuinely made me uncomfortable when I noticed there'd be no way back to writing him off as a clever joke. When Buggy proclaimed he wants to be the pirate king in front of crocodile and mihawk. That took some big red shiny clown balls. I was so proud of him when he said that I couldn't help but laugh super heartily like Luffy does when Coby stands up to Alvida. Was just so heartwarming to see him be genuine with himself for the first time in the modern era.
Buggy is definitely a key component of One Piece. Love him or hate him he will be a character that isn’t forgotten.

I’ll always love me some Buggy content 🤡 Regarding your Shanks questions at the end of the video - the same way Crocus was conveniently positioned at the beginning of the Grand Line and Rayleigh at the beginning of the New World, I believe Roger instructed Shanks to wait to make his “move for the One Piece” until the Joyboy of 20 years in the future made his appearance. Shanks may hold some final key of Laugh Tale needed for the One Piece to be realized. The remnants of the Roger pirates may all be guiding Joyboy candidates to the treasure they were too early to receive themselves.
AHHHHH!!! I WAS LITERALLY PRAYING THE NIGHT BEFORE THE CHAPTER FOR A BUGGY CHAPTER!!!! I WAS SOBBING IN MY BED HOPING FOR MORE BUGGY AND SHANKS CONTENT…. AND THEN!!!! IT HAPPENED AAHHHH!!!! The next day the chapter scanlations released early on TCB, and I set aside my whole night to reading the chapter, and it took me like an hour to get through it because I had to keep pausing my read because I was getting too overwhelmed with emotions. I SHRIEKED when I saw buggy after the whole marine discussion, but when I saw that we were going to talk about the shanks and buggy flashback??? I had to full on walk out my room and have a stroke. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I HAD FIXATED ON THAT FLASHBACK BEFORE THIS CHAPTER RELEASE! Shanks just always looked kinda sad to me when talking about buggy leaving him, and the fact that Shanks even asked and begged for buggy to join him in the first place really got to me. Pair that with the fact that whitebeard always saw shanks WITH buggy, suggesting that they were always together, or paired together often enough to be THE dynamic duo. So… The fact that THE flashback was being brought up again, I WAS BALLISTIC.
I think the world went silent when my eyes glazed over the panel where Buggy screamed out his line about the one piece. THAT GUY IN BUGGY’S AUDIENCE SAYING HE WASN’T READY TO HAVE HIS DREAMS REVIVED WAS LITERALLY ME MAN. I WAS NOT READY FOR THAT ABSOLUTE BANGER OF A LINE HOOOOOO BOY. I just had to pause to continue bawling my eyes out. I have never cried SO MUCH when reading a new chapter. I have only caught up like just over half a year ago, so the week to week chapter read is still relatively new to me- and I only started reading the chapters completely blind (with no spoilers) like a month before that buggy chapter. I am SO GLAD I read it blind though, that was one of the chapters that made me seriously appreciate being caught up and experiencing that magical moment with everyone else…. wow….

Over the years Buggy went from "oh, he's kinda funny" to jokingly saying "yeah, Buggy D. Goat! That's my captain" to now, after a lot of personal revelation, I can wholeheartedly say Buggy is a top tier favorite, probably #2 next to Whitebeard. Mostly because I can really relate to him, supporting people who shine bright at the cost of your own light. This video really put the puzzle pieces together an helped me form my thoughts after that chapter, cause I kept thinking about it.
I say this unironically: even it's just a page, half-page or a single panel, I want Buggy to be king.

I think you missed something, lets not forget that Shanks gave up the opportunity to go to laughtale and finish out the final voyage with Roger for buggy, and in part I believe that buggys agitation toward shanks is due to his own self hatred that he cost his best friend the chance to go to laughtale, then hearing shanks' sudden loss in motivation for going for the one piece, Buggy might think he is the reason for shanks, the man who he thought would be the next king of the pirates, was put at a disadvatage.
Hell yeah, I love Buggy! And his friendship with Shanks brings a tear to my eye. 😢

Buggy's been my favorite non-strawhat since impel down. I also feel like marineford and impel down changed buggy's perspective on his old best friend. Being aware of the powers at play that he wasn't fully aware of as a teen on the oro jackson probably changed his perspective of shanks, Roger, and himself. I also feel like buggy staying in the weakest sea for so long really showed he was almost reluctant to grow up, clinging to ideals he built as a ypung adult. It's like staying in the starting area of an rpg.

If Luffy thinks he needs to be Pirate King to achieve his grand dream then he neede to become Pirate King to achieve his grand dream. The catch phrase isn't "I will achieve my mysterious dream and to do that I need to become King of the Pirates" the phrase is "I'm gonna become king of the pirates"
The funny thing about Shanks vs Luffy is that Shanks is often portrayed as making most people give up on their goals of becoming the best while Luffy reignites their dreams. Heck, Luffy got Buggy to travel into the Grandline, got Rob Lucci to train to get stronger, and got Katakuri to put aside his family's safety just maintain a fair fight with someone he respected

This is why I love one piece over all. It amazing how a character that feels like a running gag is still important to the stories history and can still tug at your heart strings.
I find it crazy Oda has had this vision of Buggy D Goat for over 20 years and is only now revealing stuff like this and is probably smiling his ass off knowing fans loved every moment
I think there's way more to talk about the deep significance of Shanks and Buggy's relationship.
Because we still don't know exactly how they ended up on Roger's ship. We know that Shank was found as a baby in a chest in God Valley. This + the Figarland name hints towards Shanks being a Celestial Dragon from God Valley.
But then we have to wonder how Buggy was found too. Since they have the same age, and that Roger was talking about holding two babies in Oden's flashback, it's possible that Buggy was also found in God Valley. Then, in my opinion, there's three possibilities :
- Buggy is a celestial dragon just like Shanks. But then we have to wonder if he's from the same family as Shanks or not. Buggy having a red nose and blue hair doesn't really match with Shanks. He could be a son of another celestial dragon family living in God Valley.
- Buggy could also be the son of a random pirate from Rocks D. Xebec crew who was found abandoned by Roger's crew after the battle.
- But the most interesting theory imo is Buggy being a D. and then being Rocks D. Xebec's son (since Xebec is the only D. on God Valley besides Roger and Garp). Buggy being a D. makes a lot of sense imo because whatever he does he ends up representing a major threat to the government. His luck, his natural leadership and his ambition hint towards the fact that Buggy is a D. Just like Blackbeard and Luffy, Buggy is a leader and has a lot of luck. On the new yonkos reveals, Shanks is the only one who isn't smiling/laughing and we know that the smile and the laugh is a D. thing.
But if Buggy is a D. and Shanks a celestial dragon, what does it mean for their relationship ? Well, Buggy and Shanks' relationship has always been a mix between friendship and conflict (I'm thinking about their argument about what's the coldest between the north pole and the south pole). This relationship could symbolize the conflict but also the reunion between the Celestial dragons and the D. clan.
I hope my theory is correct because it would be dope 😅.

Great theory ! You forgot the darkest, and in my opinion the most interesting option : Buggy is a slave's son. It would put his relationship with Shanks into perspective and even explain his red nose and why he hates it: his parents were bought for this funny genetic trait.
This revelation was so perfect to me because finally Buggy makes sense. I've always loved him, but I loved Shanks too, and it felt very petty that Buggy hated him for just the fruit thing, it made no sense he would be THIS bitter over it years later, he just doesn't feel like a resentful character. But this would be the biggest betrayal ever, it makes complete sense Buggy would still resent Shanks for just abandoning their goals and objectives

I have always loved buggy and I've been certain ever since his and Shanks meeting at marineford that they were actually VERY close friends. 1082 was just the ultimate validating chapter for me, and it made me so happy for the narrative to actually take him seriously, finally. I can't wait for whatever it is oda has in store for my boy.

Now that I've finished the video, I just want to say I find it very fascinating the parallels between Luffy and Usopp and Shanks and Buggy. Not only from their character designs (Luffy is literally young Shanks with black hair and both Usopp and Buggy have "goofy" noses and roundish eyes), but their dynamic as children and personalities match up too, which I something I never really thought about. I find it interesting that if we, as you said, put Luffy in this situation, I feel Usopp's reaction would be almost exactly the same as Buggy's. I think this is pretty neat that Oda most likely intentionally created these parallels to further cement the closeness Shanks and Buggy had with one another since Oda repeatedly hammers home that Luffy considers Usopp his best friend as far as who he likes to spend time with and they being the same age. Oda back at it again with this absolute banger writing
honestly never thought of that but your right. like when usopp became god usopp it honestly really similar to a lot of buggy moments, where they didnt mean to but they ended up inspireing and rallying a shit ton of people on accident witch also makes me think we see how powerful that can be from luffy and usopp doing it on accident but if buggy uses this power more on purpose i have non doubt he could be one of the strongest characters in the serires. because Roger had this power and he used in cleaverly on purpose witch inspired the whole world!! buggy might be the only other person who could do that not even luffy i say this beacuse luffy does it more passivly but not on pupose. so if buggy uses this gift in a clever way like gold roger did hes gonna be unironicly i one of the toughest emperors despite not having shown any control over haki.

i didn't really care about buggy when i was a kid but as the series went on i grew to consider him one of the best characters in the series.
when the timeskip first came out i somehow missed the parts with buggy and for literally over a decade i realized "wait wtf...i've never seen buggy post timeskip." so i looked him up and saw how big he was and was like "wtf was he just eating for 2 years and got big and fat?" and finding out the truth was that instead of training for 2 years, all he did was put on a giant curtain and trick people into following under him believing he was all big and powerful was the funniest shit to me and elevated him to one of my favorite characters.
It's interesting to see you say that Shanks was so shaken by Roger's execution that he gave up. My understanding of that moment was that he knew something that made him change his mind. That's why he never went after One Piece until now, i think. He was waiting for the right time, the time Roger was too early for, and maybe deterring others in the meantime.

That chapter made me go from wanting to keep laughing along as Buggy stumbles his way up the ladder, to wanting to see Buggy earnestly live up to his new mantle as an Emperor of the Sea. I love Buggy because, even if he isn't great in the way his underlings think he is, he is still great through cunning and sheer charisma. Once the shock and humor of Buggy being declared an Emperor wore off, it occurred to me that he actually does deserve that spot even if it was largely the World Government's fault that he got there.
By gaming the Warlord system, he was able to put together a staggering "mercenary" fleet, and make a boatload of cash. By taking his warlord status away, the government basically turned Privateer Buggy back into Pirate Buggy. They turned his giant mercenary fleet, much of which he was able to gather up because of his legal protection, into a giant pirate fleet. They turned his banked up capital into a bona fide war chest. I love that Buggy doesn't have the combat prowess of a Kaido, or a Shanks, but he is still smart enough to seize opportunities that have turned him into an Emperor level threat.
Personally im very impressed by the fact that One Piece is able to add so much plot into a character that doesnt even have anything to do with the main cast, a factor which I think, really puts One Piece up there in world building
