I'm back! Talking about One Piece's insane use of genre.

I think what's especially impressive is not only does the story of One Piece contain all these different genres, but all these genres exist in the same world and actually affect one another in manner befitting a complex political drama. The gigantification experiment of Punk Hazard exist because Big Mom wants giants for her dark twisted Disney fantasyland, but he can't get any naturally occur giants to join her because she disgraced and ravaged the giants ancestral homeland. And Punk Hazard only exists in its current state because of the world shaking war that played out two years prior. And that war only occurred because Luffy and his crew decided they wanted to go a dreamlike world in the sky, thus escaping capture by a man who seems destined to destroy the world, leading that man to instead capture Ace. HOW IS ONE PIECE A STORY THAT EXISTS AND IS THIS GOOD?!
And if you’re up to date with the manga, you’ll know a piece of information about the ancient kingdom that just…. I don’t know how to describe how exiting this news really is, the fan base is not reacting accordingly with it hahaha
Yess thank you! One Piece does an amazing job connecting everything together. The events flow so smoothly and nothing feels out of place or forced. It’s all part of the plan

Most large franchise worlds generally come to a point where they think they cannot do anything about their world anymore because they have seen everything and already surpassed every aspect of it... So they go seeking in different planets, the whole universe, parallel dimensions, multiverse and so on. One piece is there to show how no, they haven't. The world is vast

@@tikikeram850 the real problem is, we lost any chance of exploring earth as soon as the saiyan saga started. when db became dbz, it already went to be about space because apparently, earth was too uninteresting or weak. cell went back to earth for one saga but they immediately bounced back to being about aliens and space gods.

@@deuce5546 okay, but most people who say that it’s one of the best hasn’t seen hundreds of the “best stuff ever made” so I don’t know how someone can think that.
I think a large part of One Pieces longevity is the form the world takes. It's a sea with lots of isolated islands. This allows arcs to be contained on each island and allows the author to pick and choose what details and moments will be important for the overall lore and what details will not without hurting the continuity. The author is able to keep writing without worrying about when to end the story because the world is so big and expansive, but also because the author spends so much time on every detail. He really gets good mileage with every island the Straw Hats visit. He also doesn't need to worry about writing himself into a corner, as he always has wiggle room to think of a solution.
and some times he tells stories that don't involve the main characters at all, so he doesn't need to make an excuse to have them there, sadly the anime didn't cover some of them, like the metal that Franky used to create his mecha is Wapol's poop
@@devforfun5618 The Japanese audience really disliked the Cover Page story filler episodes so they stopped doing most of them. Which sucks because some both fun and important info gets left out unless flash-backed to later on in an episode where it comes full circle
If luffy is the most free person in the world...Oda sensie is definitely the "most free writer in the world" he can create any kind of world he can imagine...and makes it connected so well in the story that's unimaginable
Personally one of my favorite One Piece arcs or plots, whatever you wanna call it, is Skypiea, specifically Noland and Kalgara.
I dub it's saga as the golden era of one piece because it went sky high and that's when they established the biggest flashback that is the massive lore of the series and it's timeline
The set up arc before it "Jaya" was also chef's kiss* made me feel a whole lot of emotions you will never find in any other form of media

And then going to skypeia and being connected to Noland is the reason the straw hats are able to ally with the tiny elves in Dressrosa, and that's why the elves give refer to all the straw hats with names associated with Noland. Luffy-lando and Uso-Lando made me laugh every time but at the same time it's such a cool lore thing
I love the story of Noland and Kalgara so much, it's probably my favourite flashbacks in the entire series, which is crazy since it's totally unrelated to our main characters. But it creates so much depth and context for the entire arc, which makes everything feel so much more 'real'
For a show whose main theme is freedom, this is so amazingly fitting.
Yeah, I definitely agree that One Piece's longevity is its biggest asset. Despite how good they were back in the day, you can make a forceful argument that shows like Marvel, Star Wars, Dragon Ball, and Naruto have all gotten worse (even just slightly) as time passes in the modern age. But somehow, One Piece only gets better overall as it progresses, reaching new levels of hype and excitement from its fanbase consistently. And the fact Oda has created a world capable of holding this many secrets and layers, even after all this time, is absolutely mindblowing

Yeah, and we know for sure, that after Kaido there will be at least 2-3 more BIG enemies, and then there also are still a dew secrets to be revealed...youncan feel that the show is slowly but steadily progressing to it's conclusion but how and when it will all end, no one can really know. It's so good, I wish more people would acknowledge it for what it is. But then again, I would be disturbed if EVERYONE just talked about it like Game of Thrones or Star Wars.
thats because one piece is a well crafted and even if not all of its aspects were planned out a good chunk of the story was in Oda's had, and the main plot points already existed, it just gets better because Oda knew what he was doing from the very start
@@emiofnncexactly what I was gonna say, many other animes that went on for a long time like Naruto and Dragon Ball were meant to be ended long ago. Oda knew from the beginning where his story was gonna end and has worked his way little by little to get there while other mangaka either planned to end it earlier or didn’t know the ending yet and have since flip flopped about. Like for me personally Naruto up to about the Pain arc was really quite solid but then over time it took a complete and utter nose dive from what it used to be about. Still had great moments but it wasn’t the same show and One Piece when you look at it, you can just tell that it’s still One Piece no matter what arc you’re in
This is why I think that reverse mountain is criminally underrated. Its the best example of Oda's storytelling genius.
As you said it did start with a fixed identity and visual but from the start we were teased fpr the bigger world, for the grand line.
And when we got there we had a couple chapters of world building that created the basis for Oda to do whatever he wanted with Crocus explanation plus the travel part to the next island as he estanlished:
-different climates between islands (so going from freezing to desert became ok)
-obrigatory route (forcing side adventures plus soon he make a way to circuvent this before it has necessary)
-different time to save a new log in each island (forcing then to stay in place or even ruah things like in Jaya)
-the log pose visual that allow it go up and down as well
Every single of this points gave Oda freedom to do what he wanted, generare conflict and let his inagination go wild without feeling out of place since we knew the rules from the start
As a man who will sing the praises of Tolkein all day long. The only other writer in the history of the world I feel can be discussed on the same level as that man is Oda. Oda is right up there with Tolkein and everyone needs to read One Piece.

At the end of the day, I truly thought the comment was hyperbole , and wanted to stab some fun. But none if this three writers are the best writer. If you like action/adventure and worldbuilding i would steer you towards Brandon Sanderson. "The way of kings" is a great book.

I love how Oda also portraits 'freedom and imagination' into the main goals of the characters, specially Luffy.
Its an interesting parallel that Oda is writing a story about characters who just whant to be free and explore the world, while it at the same time also feels like this story is also his own exploration of freedom regarding writing and drawing whatever he whants.
Y'know the whole point about One Piece having the freedom be whatever it wants made me realize how perfect Ado was as a choice for Uta's singing voice. I haven't seen Film Red yet, but as a One Piece film, having a singer like Ado who has so much range not only vocally but genre-wise is an amazing match.

one piece's world is incredibly interesting that a "two piece" could exist with a different crew going though a different path through the grand line maby starting at a different blue or cloud sea and so long as the new member where well written and different from the strawhats it would still be incredible
And the greatest part is the community will hopefully never allow that to happen. Boruto is a great show that reminds us that we can have too much of a good thing. Naruto deserved better.

Personally, this is what I want after the story: A rerelease of One Piece as a seasonal anime that fixes its pacing issues and is animated extremely well, and if that can’t incorporate the cover stories into the series itself, have a separate little thing that animates all of the cover stories. And then on top of that it would be great if Oda continued showing off details of the world.
I am team "big no" for One Piece sequel, unless it takes about hundred of years of original story timeline, that Straw Hat Pirates stories are told like Roger Pirates tale in current era
And they should not disrupt any current legacy at all, Luffy, Law, Kid, Zoro, Sanji and many legends of that era should remain the strongest "endgame" level figure like Rayleigh, Garp, and Whitebeard figure in current era, no nerfing allowed

As an aspiring writer, I am speechless at Oda's work of art. This is one of the few, if not the only fiction that made me cry over a boat and a whale, and had me caring for so many, yet different characters. It's one thing to pick up tropes, play with and subvert them, but to incorporate them organically while keeping the world and its characters somewhat consistent is a feat. Whenever I come back to One Piece, I feel like coming home while escaping the real world. It truly is a wonderland.
You just explained my point. Yes, One Piece's story telling is very underrated. And I think, especially when "The Luffy's thing with Kaido" will appear in anime, people will start to understand Oda' freedom of story building and they will appreciate as I do.

In this regard, OP has even more "localized" freedom than JoJo, since every part takes place in a completely different time and place with a new protagonist, while OP has had only one timeskip and kept the same characters all the way through. This allows for characters introduced hundreds of chapters earlier to still have shining moments in completely different places and contexts.
I like Jooj's approach more because I feel that it allows it to go more in depth than OP, but I'm a Jjoo fan, so the bias is there. One criticism I've always had with jOjO is that I really wish to see the characters vibing and interacting more in pretty much every part, since it's usually so intense that you don't have much time to see them more relaxed, something which OP is fantastic at.
I think I pretty much almost completely agree as I'm a oJoJ fan as well as a one piece fan too
Watching this while the new arc, Egghead island, is beginning is so wild and so right.
Thriller Bark was amazing at being the obligatory american cartoon halloween episode, but for a whole arc.
One Piece really is like watching multiple shows, without it being multiple shows. And a saving grace is that it's by the same author. So even if there are (can't think of any, but im sure theres some) inconsistencies, they're so rare unlike a world with various shows/movies/comics/media in general.
It can really cover a lot of genres for any of your likes or moods.
I've seen this only possible in gag anime, where consistency is a hindrance and the characters could die every episode for all they care. But One Piece does it while having a plot. It's amazing.
My boy sanji in the whole cake's island deserve the cake of his own for winning the fight without fighting. Thank you for pointing that out. It is Sanji character's development what suprised me since he hasn't been showing of much of the cool fights like Zoro and Luffy (not very shounen; and he bled his nose so many times cus of women in some major events) but pretty much the growing of his "maturity" in the whole cake's arc is what makes him an amazing character to follow. I actually laughed so much since you mentioned Sanji being the Damsel in Distress here; something I have been realizing but not able to express it outwardly.
And for the "freedom of genre" part you are very nailing it! Thriller bark has been one of my favorite arc since it got out the shounen tropes and becoming a goth-ish story instead; but kinda weirded out why it was good when I was a child since my friends seemed not liking it too much because they say it got boring. Now, I know why I like it. The freedom of creativity really show how this is one of the best fantasy out there without even going too much of the "multiverse" tangent that still interconnects with each other which is AMAZING on its own.

To me why One Piece is still a masterpiece and why it prolonged for such a long time is just that Oda is a freaking mastermind. That mans writing skills are just top notch! I mean I'm getting goosebumps regularily now for about 20 years just reading the manga and I still up to this date scream like a little boy when I watch the anime and sth sick happens. I seriously wish to meet Oda for once and talk to him for a bit. That guys sense of humor and his intelligence would make it an awesome convesation I bet.

Considering Wano is inspired, or even is Jidaigeki, I really want Elbaf to be inspired by Norse sagas. With themes of honor, fatalism/fate, and possibly a worthy death and what makes it such (despite Kaido somewhat exploring this topic). But Elbaf might not even appear as a full arc or even appear at all and I'm totally fine with it.

This is new aspect of why people love One Piece, but it makes completely sense, why shaking up the formula by changing the genre is interesting. Thank you for showing this to me! It's a really well-made video
They even made the newest movie into what is essentially a musical, and at least in my opinion also works. The main reason I love One Piece is mainly how consistently good it is.

Seriously I think Oda is pretty damn clever for setting up one piece like this. I haven't seen anyone mention it until now but he has managed to put together a believable world where literally anything can happen. Any genre, a war, a damsel in distress, a whole "main character vs government" type thing, a wondrous cake island, ancient sky islands, forests, mountains, a city on the back of an elephant, prison break, samurais etc. Its a mish mash of genres but because Oda chose this particular setup and worldbuilding, a pirate adventure on a planet with many different islands and a literal line that must be progressed through start to finish it makes sense in the world itself that every island will be different with different cultures and peoples etc. so Oda can basically write what he wants. This is the genius of one piece and why it never got boring
Oh and maybe the most important thing is: the plot isnt over yet. Take naruto for example, naruto achieved his goal of becoming hokage. They needed to make a whole new plot and often it ends up bad because they are milking it. One piece isnt over yet, and oda knew his manga was gonna be damn long so all these chapters and episodes are still the main overarching plot. The series was build from day 1 for longevity, oda knew it would take a while but the foresight to have all these important plot points, foreshadowing etc. makes the whole thing still feel like one piece
One Piece is worth considered as one of the best literature ever produced.

Great video! It's truly amazing how the themes of freedom and unlimited imagination applies to the series as a whole just as much as it applies to the main character. The freedom to do whatever he wants - that's Luffy and that's also Oda.

I've been here in this boat since 2019, but I know One Piece practically all my life, I used to say it was way too long, but I decided to read the manga, after that saw the anime, and when I saw the videos of the 100th volume, I decided this was my favorite story ever, even above Jojo (and I love jojo's bizarre adventure)
When I talk with my friends about why I liked so much, it's because of this topic you touch in the video, it has everything, it could be anything, and it's in my opinion at LotR level, and they laugh about it, because how those silly pirates can be near Frodo and his fellows??
The world in One Piece is really interesting, the characters not only the protagonist but everyone has something to say, Oda knows how to make you invested in they're stories, that you want to know bout their life, what they did, what are they gonna do. It has so much freedom and breaking formula that when Luffy washed up on Wano and the artstyle was different it felt like a reboot of the show, and just felt really fresh
This is kind of true. We see this in other shows as well, and if we think about it, those are the shows that people truly love (and have a major cult following).
Community: did star wars, my dinner with Andre, Hunger games, the sting, and many more
Psych: They made references to every single 80s thing possible. They did American idol, Friday the 13th, Fast and furious, 16 candles, and many more.
Just 2 examples, but the freedom to do this is rare, and it requires a LOT of work. As a writer, you need to love the characters, and you need to make the viewers love the characters. That's the point at which you get the freedom to go wild
I was literally rewatching the Yu-Gi-Oh GX videos because I started rewatching GX (I haven't watched it since i was like 5 so this may as well be my first time) as my comfort show to help with me anxiety while playing Duel Links since I hopped back on that, and I was just thinking "Man I hope MelonTeee uploads something" and here we are 😂

I love your video, I also get hyperfixated when I find a show that I loved It happened with Naruto, SCC, Tsubasa Chronicles and recently My dress up darling. There is something special about those kind of shows/mangas that asks you to keep thinking about them.
PD:Shounen is a demographic not a genre, shounen can be romance, fantasy, thriller, horror, etc. I know it's nitpicky but I just hate when people treat shounen/shoujo as genre.

I would watch the shit out of movies and spin offs about other canon parts of the world. Jaya being split by the knockup stream and the ensuing war time, whatever the hell Shanks has been up to the entire series, Big Mom’s rise to creating Tottoland, Rocks and God Valley, what Fujitora saw that made him want to blind himself, Garp’s career, Rayleigh being a chadly old man, Aokiji and Akainu creating Punk Hazard’s dual landscape…so many things left off screen that could be so freaking fascinating to explore more deeply. 🙏
I love to see people analysing One Piece from different perspectives that aren't filled with the internal debate of the community, of course the debates that we have are interesting specially if you've been a fan for a long time but this kind of analysis is just so fucking good and does justice to Oda's story. Greatest story ever told :)
With the release of film Red, what is essentially a one piece musical, you’ve hit the nail on the head
Each island has its own rules, history and story and everything that happens is all tied together. It's so flexible, kind of like rubber.
I also like the reference to historical pirates being metion stuff like blackbeard having 3 skulls on his flag is like the real world blackbeard having rumored to carry 3 guns on him.

I would like to sincerly thank you for making this as to put it shortly I started reading the One Piece manga a few months back and decided to take a break after Marineford because honestly I found it to be a dissapointing arc, this break ended up being very long as I kept putting off reading it and only started it again a week ago to because I wanna go watch film red with my friends. At the time I ran the maths and proclaimed "I only need to read roughly 32 chapters a day to get caught up" and then proceeded to get into the Blue Lock manga and have not read a single chapter of One Piece after getting to the Fisherman Island chapter `where the dude with a big golden crab claw shows up. This video has conviced me to start reading again and while I know for a fact that I wont get caught up its something.
I've been watching A LOT of your One Piece videos lately. And I just wanted to let you know: There are so many things I feel about One Piece and failed to express somehow. And your videos always nail it! I mean I have goosebumps watching your videos because I feel so much of what you're saying!!! 😌
this video is so cool and honestly for me personally just further proves ur point about like imagination and the endless possibilities with one piece, like the whole genre topic was something i never even considered and just took at face value but god damn it is pretty freaking epic just how seamlessly oda is able to transition the story from one wacky island to a super serious government island. such a fun series, i love this video thanx for making it
Playing a lot of Dungeons and Dragons, one of the most important aspects of world building is to leave open spaces. By which I mean, don’t try to go in to the world with everything fully fleshed out and set in stone. Its a surefire way to paint yourself in to a corner.
Thats why One Piece has the longevity it does, Oda has done a good job of giving himself a wide open canvas that gives him the freedom to come up with anything he wants whenever he wants.
I would argue that One Piece dips into other genres even before Thriller Bark, albeit more subtly.
1. Little Garden is basically a brief jaunt into the Lost World/Dinosaur genre (Jurassic Park/King Kong)
2. Skypeia is an entire arc set in the sci-fi fantasy minigenre of sky island adventures (as seen in Laputa, Bioshock, Zelda Skyward Sword and a lot of speculative sci-fi)
Mattew Modine said when working with Kubrick on Full Metal Jacket was "What i learned in making FMJ was if you want to be creative with something you have to let it evolve." You can start with a vision but as time goes on new ideas will make its way into art.
I TALK ABOUT WANO BE WARNED
reading Wano through now that it’s over, I feel like it really is one of the best One Piece arcs. It melds a lot of things together, from the sci-fi aspects with Queen and Sanji, touches on issues like poverty and classism (I think I’m using that correctly). The idea of an honorable death or living no matter what in Usopp’s philosophy against the samurai’s, Zoro’s struggle to become stronger, which is highlighted amazingly on Onigashima with his fights against Kaido and King, and of course Kaido himself is such a nuanced villain, who, despite being the strongest creature in the world is constantly having his philosophies being challenged and proven wrong. All of this wrapped up in a beautifully-written coming-of-age story for Momonosuke. It’s genuinely such a well-written piece, and I know that’s an unpopular opinion in the fandom right now but I do hope that changes.

im glad you enjoyed it but it falls flat on some of the points you mentioned
@@Gyrados9988 yeah when i was reading weekly, some of the parts seems to be slow paced and dragged on but when i read from start to end it easily became my top 3 arc. Surely there are some issues in last part of wano like some plotholes(which i think will be explained in future via flashbacks, but i dont think wano has completely ended, in future we will see more of wano and thats why oda left out something which will be explained in future). That said I really enjoyed the arc after binging from start to end, even red scabbard having more screen time seems annoying to me.
I totally agree. When I saw Momonoske as Shogen, I felt it and I cried. How Oda draw things and feelings prove how the One Piece Drama is just in another level. When Luffy got "that thing" with Kaido I was very happy to see Oda finally write "what je really want".
The thing I like most about King and Zoro's fight is the introduction of King's race, because immediately, and I mean immediately, after Wano ends stuff goes NUTS and King is a fantastic powerful character to use as a baseline and if you guys know what I mean good because I'm not explaining any further cuz I don't want to spoil it but wow I love it
Also it's more than just the freedom of the genre, Oda is a genuinely good writer and he can make a great story even with something as humble and simple as a flashback (like the Noland flashback which was extremely limited in scope). Whereas many writers have failed and floundered when the genre gets too big

I really wonder if Oda still keep his childhood diary or drawing book because his rich imagination is as magical as a child. And that Little Garden arc is so childish (in a good way) like…two giants live in a small island?? It’s like one of the tittle of HC Anderson’s tale. It’s so crazy it’s amazing. And the slapstick comedy is out of this world.. Who ever thought the existence of wild peoples (the D’s) who eating or fighting while they are in a state of sleeping.
I think your comparison between Tolkien's and Oda's work is perfect because both completely revolutionized the genre they set out to write while creating unique works that can never be replicated.
It's a confluence of the author's life, creativity, message and historical moment that simply won't happen again in the same way, and that's magnificent.

I love how you mentioned that One Piece freely allows people to make their own islands and characters. I've been watching One Piece D&D by Rustage and aside from it being more Seinin than Shounen in tone, I could see it being fully canon in the show.
A year ago, I found this video and it convinced me to watch OP. A year later, I'm caught up on the anime, planning to start the manga. I will forever be thankful to exist alongside this masterpiece. (And we got a decent live action, and may be a new anime soon)
Honestly I think you're underestimating how diverse Marvel has been and can be. A lot of the points you were making, actually can be applied to the mcu, especially recently. Just the projects from this year felt like they all had completely different genres.
I'm only seeing this now, but THANK YOU!!! I've been talking to a lot of friends about how I view One Piece as the 'Lord of the Rings' of the post-2000's. I'm a huge fan of Tolkien and the world he created and I think Oda is definitely one of the very few people out there who comes this close to him in terms of world building and storytelling. It's really sad that this story gets overlooked so much in 'big' discussions about fictional worlds, where everyone just talks about Marvel, Star Wars or Harry Potter (don't get me wrong, these franchises ARE big, but if we're talking about them then One Piece def. deserves a spot on that list as well!)

Honestly after reading and watching this series for a bit I can vouch that one piece is one of the greatest stories ever told. After decades of consistent good writing , characters , events , an overall great narrative, mysteries, and ideas. It’s sad to know many people outside the anime/manga/comic book community will not credit it because it is the media that it is. It’s not some high posh society narrative with several layers of context or witty writing or needing to up to date on all in the world of the literature. Hopefully one day it gets the true credit it deserves as lord of the rings , Star Wars , and others of the grand story telling epics. It be cool to see the world be fleshed out more after this story ends. I think it’ll be sad if one piece is the only story wile get out of this world Oda and his people have made. I can’t imagine what Star Wars would be without knights of the old republic.
If there's one takeaway from Film: RED's success, is that the need to strike while the iron is hot and retell WCI as a full on Musical (On Stage or Animated)

To easily describe what one piece is a bunch of existing concepts but written to the extreme with radical depth that they themselves manifest a new theme and meaning such a the definition of a Pirate

One Piece and It's Always Sunny both keeps the story going for a long time One Piece with its massive scale and world, Always sunny with its characters who are always being developed but being structurally denied any character progression. Through all this video I had a voice in my head which volume grew louder and louder by all the things you were saying, telling me: doctor who, doctor who, DOCTOR WHO. It is very interesting because everything you say about One Piece can be said exactly the same about doctor who, the main difference being, doctor who sacrifices a linear non-messy storytelling, en exchange for EVEN MORE FREEDOM, but you got an amazing product sometimes, a messy enjoyable product sometimes and an awful product sometimes, and ITS WONDERFUL, Is what freedom is like, experimenting, trying new things, you have explained in this one piece video what I love about doctor who xD.

Honestly freedom in general is the biggest most important theme in one piece. Not just to the world and characters in story but to oda. With luffy his abilities are essentially oda freeing himself from normal shonen punch fighting conventions and simply letting him do what he has the most fun writing / drawing. And that freedom is translated into the story so seamlessly is great.
Watched a whole bunch of One Piece videos of yours, and I gotta say, your stuff on the series is honestly a breath of fresh air, compared to a lot of other channels out there.
They do their work fine as they are, but a lot of them go in this similar tone and mindset about the series that I tend to not vibe with as much, and I usually don't stick around with them very long. Like, leaning more towards comparing and framing it around the appeal and legacy of dragonball, which I personally was never THAT big a fan of, and the stereotypical trappings of most shonen it gets wrangled up with.
Which is all to say that you have a very interesting perspective on why you like One Piece, and the ways in which you describe how the characters, world, and story captured the minds of readers, very much help illuminate my own appeal of the series as well.
Keep doing what you've been doing, man! You're doing an amazing job on these videos!

The only other series I can think of that can just change genres like one piece is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure because of how the story gets broken up in to parts which each part being a different genre.
Part 1 is a gothic horror, part 2 is an Indiana Jones styled adventure around the world, part 3 is a globe troating adventure inspired by around the the world in 50 days, part 4 is a slice of Life, part 5 is a mafia story, part 6 is a prision break story, part 7 is a story about cowboys and part 8 is a slice of life with a bit of mystery

Another advantage that One Piece has over the MCU (or any other western comics property sans Image comics in its conception rip) is that One Piece is written consistently by one guy, Oda. Meanwhile the MCU has a whole ensamble of writers that yes have their meetings and discussions in order to try to make the universe feel a tad more cohesive, it still leaves a lot to be desired, gives of a more created by a comitte feel and tonal flips between directors and styles can be confusing and jarring, thats why I think they succeeded the best when they let James Gunn cover the cosmic angle of the Marvel universe while the Russo bros were focused on Captain America and the more earth based characters.
I really appreciate some of the things you celebrate about one piece really is different than the main discourse around one piece. I'm a shonen die hard and I know that genre and format extremely well and while one piece has never lost that genre but almost everyone that talks about one piece looks at it through the lense of shonen literacy because that's the story format they know best and often don't discuss elements that you notice. It is refreshing to hear someone come from outside our bubble of shonen heads talk about it every one of your video essays brings a new perspective from an outside view that is so intimately aware of the source material as well.
Outside view isn't quite right because you very much are a part of the community and are better versed in this community than most it's more that it feels that way because you bring a fresh perspective to the discussions and topics.
A tiny fact I absolutely love about wano is how they decided to get complealy new style of linear just cuz it kinda fits.

Ive said for a while that One Piece is a modern day epic. A new millennium version of things like Beowulf, the Tale of Gilgamesh, the Odyssey. Its one of those stories that has every reason to be passed down for generations to come because not only is it a time capsule of the culture of its era, but its also a story with lessons to be learned and values to share. It is so much more.
Hey I would love to hear your thoughts on OG Gundam time line, the Universal Century. It was kinda the first cinematic universe with a bunch of side stories and points of view with each series focusing on different protagonists, battle fronts, with some series taking place at the same time. It is most war drama, but it does do some different stuff with genre.
