    Probably the only thing about my 2012 300 that I could do without. I wish it had the normal shifter like the SRT does.

    I actually find this shifter very easy to use and easier to clean the area around it.

    ..and now Chrysler is recalling 1.1+ million vehicles that are sold with this shift mechanism. Theyre adding some further safety mechanism to keep car from rolling.
    Seemed like a bad idea all along.

    These shifters are a pain in the ass for us technicians at dealerships. It won't let you shut the engine off in neutral, so you have to put it in park when you're trying to position the hoist arms under the car. So if the car is slightly too forward or rearward to hoist up, you gotta get back in, start it and drive it a few inches and try again. It also won't let you out of park unless the engine is running. Not a problem for some people, but it is kinda stupid in my opinion.

    Have this shifter in my 2013 JV Edition....My only advice is to make sure you look at the cluster to make sure you're in reverse instead of park or neutral, in drive instead of reverse or neutral, in neutral instead of reverse or drive.Might feel like you shifted in the correct gear, but most times you're not.Can be annoying, but I prefer a shifter instead of that rotary thing on the 2015's and up.I just like to have my hand on a shifter when I'm driving....personal preference

    I just saw the light jump from neutral to Park without signaling that the gears went through the reverse gear between neutral and park. This is bad considering most people consider the reverse between Park and neutral as a safety to making sure people don't accidentally put it in neutral when they mean to place it in Park. On a more responsible design it takes a conscientious second action to ensure a person is aware they are taking the vehicle out of park or conversely to ensure it is in park without question.

    I rented a 300 couple weeks back, and personally found it pretty simple to use... I didn't find myself checking too see which gear I was in...pretty normal... And over the two days, I don't recall having been in a gear I didn't plan to be in. One thing though, I didn't know what this "S" next to drive stood for or how to engage it. This video doesn't even mention it!

    Chrysler just issued a recall on the 2013-2014 electronic shifter. It pops out of park. The recall says to always set the parking brake when the car is in park and the engine is running. They don't have a fix, but are working on one. I have a 2014 and have had it pop out if park into reverse. I thought it was how I was working the shifter. Guess not.

      +Mike1967b I actually think it's nicer in some ways than the mechanical type. I wonder what demographic is failing to use it correctly? It doesn't seem that difficult, just different. A story also mentioned people getting out of the cars with the engine still running, which brings up another bad habit of excessive idling.

  • @xntrik52556
    @xntrik52556 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Agreed. I recently rented a 300 with that shifter, and it was unbelievably dreadful. A normal gated shifter is so mindlessly easy to use that I'm shocked that anyone would switch to such a clusterfork of horrendously bad engineering. This wasn't a minor foible that I could put up with if I owned the car; that shifter literally ruined the whole car. They couldn't pay me to own a car like that.

    • @donnalopez2126
      @donnalopez2126 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Should be in the owners manual, the Jeeps have a cord in the center console to pull, it is hidden beneath a trim piece where the top is hinged to the console itself may or may not be the same on Chrysler and Dodge.

    Let us see: 7am shift to R and then to D. 730am shift to P. 5pm shift to R and then to D. 540pm shift to P. Repeat 5 times and 2 times on the weekend. You shift 42 times a week touching it 28 times. Total time 2 minutes of touching the shifter per week. If you can't get it, then get off the road and ride a bike!

      i have it on my 2014 charger was able to get used to it in a week idk why everyone is saying you dont know what gear your in no offence but is it really that hard lol it jerks backward a little when in reverse just like any other car and dose the same when you put it in drive jerking forward that is.

    And now Chrysler opps! Fiat is now recalling this awful design gearshift due to people not putting it in park correctly. I work at a rental car company and I always hated this stupid shifter. And now the new ones have that dumb knob that the 200s and jeeps use. They can't the just use the regular design that the Dodge chargers and Challengers use?

    What is the point of this design? Why not keep the mechanical gear shift that is simple to use and that everyone has committed to memory? From the news reports Ive been reading there have already been a lot of crashes when people exit their vehicle thinking it is in park but it isn't. Another awful design from Chrysler!

    • @MrGOLDENSHOT25
      @MrGOLDENSHOT25 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      how exactly does one do that though? I agree its stupid but i think these drivers (ive seen it on the news allso) may be perhaps a bit thick in the head? i know if my car is still in gear it moves before i can even open the door.

    • @vlmp11
      @vlmp11 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrGOLDENSHOT25 you state "how exactly does one do that though? I agree its stupid but i think these drivers (ive seen it on the news allso) may be perhaps a bit thick in the head? i know if my car is still in gear it moves before i can even open the door".No we are not dummies, the shifter is moved to Park but REMAINS in Reverse ! The driver thinks the shifter is in Park, but is not. Since this has happened to me a number of times I thought I did not engage the shifter correctly. But when it happened again I discovered that some electrical bug initiates and causes the following to take place. The rear camera does not show the rear view behind the car, in the Infotainment screen, as it normally does when actually shifting to Reverse. Any dummy would realize the shifter is in Reverse, if the rear view illuminated in the Infotainment screen when the e-shifter malfunctions....But it Does Not. And another failsafe also occurs, when the motor is running, as in this situation opening the drive door normally a warning {Ringing Chimes} initiates. But no Chimes when the bug initiates. So who is the DUMMY....................Chrysler. They now have created a double FAILSAFE issue ! I'm sure they are aware of what I have stated, but are doing noting about,. It only involves 2 model years 2013 and 2014. After only 2 years Chrysler changed the e-shift to a ROTARY dial..................does that tell you anything ????

    • @MrGOLDENSHOT25
      @MrGOLDENSHOT25 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not saying it is a good design, I'm just saying it like I see it based on what the news has shown me and what I have read. my door chime was unplugged by me so that if I wreck
      I wont have a ptsd episode when I hear one. I do see how one can get used to the rear camera engaging and subconsciously adapt to it meaning the car Is in reverse, but it still should not be the only indication to the driver. and again, it is a new car it should start pulling as soon as you foot is off the brake.
      I wont defend Chrysler (I really don't like their cars) but the calls I have seen for a recall seem like another step in the direction of the nanny state which I do not approve of. if you have been harmed by this silly design then I am sorry, but it is the drivers responsibility to pay 100% attention to their surroundings. a car can only be blamed for so much.
      if it makes you feel better I have the same opinion about the gm faulty ignition that caused wrecks. my car has died 5 times and every time I still manage to stop it safely instead of hitting a tree or another vehicle.
      sorry.

    Smh it doesn't take a damn rocket scientist to know how to shift a gear lever... If you're that stuck on stupid then just simply count the clicks when shifting in your head and if that's still too hard to comprehend the all together just get you an older car.. Problem solved.

  • @n4lq
    @n4lq 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    You MUST look at the display otherwise sooner or later you're going to slam into something behind or in front of you. Hold the lever for a microsecond too long and it skips to the next gear. An idiot designed this!!! Nice car otherwise. -- 2013 300

  • @retrogaming1986
    @retrogaming1986 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Horrible design. What ever happened to traditional automatic shifters? Slide it forward or back to change gears, and the gear is clearly seen next to the shift knob.
    This whole thing with electronic switches is ridiculous. Something like a transmission should always be more physical and less electronic...
    I'm not only blaming Fiat-Chrysler for these bad designs, but all OEMs who adopt it.. This is why I will always buy an old car...
