You could be a white millionaire with media connections, and if you rolled up in a courthouse and murdered three defendants (in a clearly pre-meditated attack) with an illegal firearm, you’d get at least 25 years.
If you’re a poor black guy like Sam Jackson’s character, you have even worse chances.
In fact, regardless of race or status, if you had an assault rifle in a courthouse you’d probably be shot by sheriffs before you could even surrender
Edit: also great catch that this movie was right before the anti-hero boom when heroes had to be very clearly good, villains had to be unrepentantly evil, and any morally ambiguous actions taken by a hero had to be given every justification imaginable to make it easy to understand

Or be written by JK Rowling and have the obviously terrible things the "good guys" do be waved away cause they're the good guys. The hat said so. If the hat says you're a bad guy, it doesn't matter how many old ladies you help across the street into her house to fuck her real nice cause she hasn't seen action in decades, you're still a shitty person.

But you have to take into account the reason those two men were murdered in the first place was because they admitted to brutally raping, torturing, and attempting to murder a child. That doesn't mean Jackson's character wasn't guilty, or shouldn't have been arrested. It just means that his lawyer was able to convince the jury that his client was temporarily insane. Basically, the point of the story isn't whether Jackson was criminally wrong, but morally.
