My little dog started coughing 2 nights ago and last night it became severe. All the emergency vets I was calling said they were at capacity and my own vet of 11 years wouldn't see her. I was desperate it was 2am.
When I saw the little Shih Tzu dog in this video at min 3:30 I burst into tears, it was exactly the same. My little girl was taking over 100 breaths a minute and was in real distress hacking and coughing. I gave her some raw honey as you suggested, literally within 5 minutes she calmed down, her breathing went down to 35 a minute and she relaxed and fell asleep for 3 hours. When she woke again wheezing I gave more honey and the symptoms subsided for another two hours. This was enough time for me to find a vet who would take us and they diagnosed her with congestive heart failure, she spent 9 hours on oxygen and IV's and 4 shots of Lasix to bring her back. They said she just barely made it.
YOU saved my dogs life and I am eternally grateful. Thank you for all of this wonderful information. Blessings. :)

@@terrycarpenter1743 after the pandemic, there was severe burnout and a lot of people left the field. One of the reasons being, seeing and hearing nasty comments like these. The veterinary field has the highest rate of suicide. Please realize that your words have power to hurt. Your vet is probably scrambling to find people to hire to be staffed at all. Most hospitals are struggling to have vets and vet nurses to fill all roles. A little empathy goes a long way.

Thank You a million times over for this information! My 9 year old Pomeranian has been coughing for a week now & spitting up at times. I took her to the Vet Hospital yesterday & was told she has a heart murmur 😢. Dr took X-rays & confirmed the murmur & her lungs have some edema too but no CHF detected. I was told to follow up with a vet cardiologist. I’m praying 🤲🏼 hard my baby pulls through.

man, you keep saying get a proper work up but my dog presented at 12 post-bath with:
    collapse
    blue tongue
    stiff ribcage/stiffness
    could not breathe
two different vets. blood work was ideal, xrays were gorgeous, EKG perfect.
Dead two days later. We couldn't get her back after two more attacks like that and no one has a clue. We spent $600+ in a matter of days and the vets are just as upset as we were because wtf, dog. You looked great on everything in terms of diagnosis.
Sometimes even with a proper work up they still go.

Hi Dr. Andrew! Thank you so much to everybody who sent videos of their dogs coughing! What a great idea to share this perplexing syndrome; we all feel so bad (and scared) when our pets are in distress... Great video & advice. 🐾 My Gidget - 5 lb toothless angel in a 14 year old Yorkie costume - has a cough off and on; cold weather is inching in on us and she's been cough/gagging as soon as we come inside from a walk. This happened last year too and the vet, after extensive exam including blood work and full body x-ray, said simply that it is "old dog bronchitis." Is that a thing?!
    Stay safe! 💖 😷👍

Update on R Lo the retching dog: he saw a cardiologist on 10/16 and was diagnosed with a 4/6 heart murmur but it wasn't related to the retching/coughing. Cardiologist thought he might possibly have tracheobronchitis so we started him on doxycycline. I had also been researching acid reflux as a possible cause and read that a home-cooked diet was best. The day after I fed him his first home-cooked dinner he stopped retching and coughing. I don't know if it was the antibiotics kicking in after 3.5 days or the diet but something sure has helped. I was planning on switching him to a home-cooked diet due to his heart anyway. The supplements I give him are Hawthorne, Co q-10, krill oil. He is on no medications except the doxy which is for another week or so. He also gets goats milk yogurt & honey.

My sister’s elderly dog, has been & at the time was continuously coughing for as many years, especially when he gets excited. I ended up taking him for X-rays & it turns out he has tracheae collapse. I eventually a few days later, asked my doctor for prednisalone, which is an athsma medication for relaxing the tracheae muscles in human athsmatics, which has worked really well for him. I asked the veterinarian (I like to work with vet) on how much is the correct dose for my sister’s elderly dog. It helped him greatly.
I have Ozzie Bear in my care now, I’ve a much relaxed environment for him, of course this helps him greatly.
I’m the animal caregiver in the family, most patience with the animals.
Oscar (Ozzie Bear my pet name for him) no longer on any pain medication for his old body full of arthritis for about 3-4 months & no prednisalone for tracheae collapse.
Today & every day I give Ozzie Bear & my little Lhasa Apso, Cheech Chi a 1ml syringe (NO NEEDLE) full of pure honey 🍯 into their mouths. Pure Honey is great for them, they love honey.
My Cheech Chi has an enlarged heart, which causes him to cough often. As his heart being so big, squeezes all his other organs to swell out making him look overweight.
I adore my animals & they adore me, I thank god for my animals 🐶

You can ask your vet for an inhalant instead of the oral, so it doesn't go through the system. If you're on a budget, a vet told me you can fit a toilet paper roll over the nose and spray (if it fits snugly).

It started with some episodes of not being able to breathe to the point of lack of oxygen and a purple tongue. I have mild asthma and my step was a pulmonary doctor. You know, I really do understand how strong the love for your dog is,,I myself have a small terrier mix (Shorty), currently feeling very unwell, he is 11, blood test results we find out tomorrow, his X-rays did show ,left side of heart slightly enlarged, that's why I'm watching videos like this one, it's all I can think about, I'm scared for him, scared of losing him, and very worried of not being able to financially help him, with the proper care he might need plus, medications, I know it's early and he's not coughing yet, but I feel it might be in his future,,so getting back to the love we have for our sweet companions,, doesn't it come down to quality of life,,when there not as happy any more ,not as active , having a bad cough ( like I saw in this video) some coughing for years,,is it fair to them to keep them going, possibly miserable, like that for years, because you can't bare the thought of living without them? Am I wrong for thinking this way?

Bless your heart. I had a schnauzer, my T-bone, for 17 years. His last year of life he had seizures, which phenobarbital kept under control but made his liver shut down. Then another medicine for the liver. He went deaf. I had 2 other 50 lb mixed pits. T-bone had to ride in a stroller. I couldn’t let go. It probably was very selfish of me to keep hanging own while he suffered. But the day came that I knew it was time and I did it. One of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Then the next year, beginning of the pandemic, I lost my other two mixed pits. My heart and soul pack of three I’d had 17, 15 and 10 yrs since babies. My heart goes out to you. It’s so painful. But you do what you need to do. Everyone said put T-bone down for over a year and I just couldn’t bare it. You will know. Many hugs to you. 😔💔

@LOUIS CABRAL I'm so happy to hear your baby is doing better🤗
It's a crazy story about how I ended up with two more rescues, but I did. We lost T-bone and I still had my Harley and Gertrude. About one year later, Harley (15 yr old mixed pit) suddenly while (out on a walk) lost the ability to use her back legs. This was the beginning of the pandemic, March 2020. For about 2 weeks I managed to get her out back to pee and poo. Horrible horrible bc her mind was good. My son came over and told me I needed to do something bc of this pandemic and germs. I let him take her to the vet and never saw her again. This is the one I will never ever get over. EVER. Her ashes will be buried w me. This left Gertrude sad and lonely so about one month later I found a puppy who favored Harley so Gertrude would not be alone. Exactly one month later Gertrude passed suddenly from skin cancer we had been battling for a couple years. Devastation words can not describe. So, then we got another rescue, so the puppy was not alone. Now it's Bernie and Luke. They have saved us. But I still cry. T-bone, Harley and Gertrude are still my heart and soul forever. 🙏🏻and well wishes for your baby.

My little princess was born with a heart murmur, and did get a diagnosis of valvular pulmonary stenosis recently. If she plays too hard, or basically does anything that spikes her heart rate, she might start to cough. It’s kind of a honking sound almost like what a goose would make. When she settles down, and her heart rate goes down, she catches her breath a little and the honking noises stop.
Yes, she is scheduled for heart valve surgery to repair the faulty valve.

Although we are 4 days away from his follow-up appointment , I tried the warm water spoonful of honey and lemon squeeze treatment and it worked immediately! The cough-hack-choke is completely gone. Will have our Vet check it out on Friday to rule out kennel cough. Thank You!

I’ve been using hawthorn, dandelion & Coenzymes q10 and regular daily doses of Honey to help soothe the throat for my dear Polly, shes 14 with a heart murmur, shes been displaying some of these symptoms for a while now, sometimes her coughing keeps her up at night and sometimes shes ok and more settled, but I’m a little more worried about the crackling sound coming from her mouth when shes panting, Maybe ill upload a video and send to you 👍🏻 i took her to my local vet but i just didn’t feel they wanted to properly look at her. I just want her to be comfortable and happy🙏🏻✨

My Pomeranian Shitzu is 16 years old and since last week Friday September 10th 2021 he's been coughing his lungs out non stop. He'll have a little break in between for like 15 minutes and then the coughing starts again which last for 30 to 40 minutes. It's so heartbreaking to see him going through this. I believe it is Collaps trachea. My wife and I took him to veterinarian last week Saturday and they believe he may have to undergo surgery which is so expensive. Like $500, but I guess that's the only option. We have him cough suppressant along with the pills they have diagnosed him with. It seems like it's getting worse by the day. We pray for our dog everyday and every moment.

My dog gets excited and makes a croup sound cough and a bit like kennel cough but she isn’t coughing any other time only occasionally like only 3 or 4 coughs when excited. she is a Labrador I just hope it isn’t the start of laryngeal paralysis. As it seems to only happens when she is excited or running around. She had a ct scan of her whole body as she had Mammory tumors removed which were all fine except one was pre cancer. Now this has started happening and she has two fractured teeth it is never ending with her health so I’m hoping to go more natural approach and love watching your videos as u seem to care a lot about animals and I get the feeling a lot of vets are only in it for the business and I love your genuine care for your dogs and helping people. I added Asthma Stop, Vitamin C, Propolis ( which seemed to work) Predisnone, also seemed to work but I’m concerned about this one as he looked like he was putting on weight. I’m not happy and my concern it might be lungworm. This was dismissed with an x-ray only! He’s not young about 10 years old but I love him dearly and he loves life! Hello! My dog is a Tibetan Spaniel, 10 and half years old. Three months ago he started to be treated with Vetmedin. Twice a day: 2.5mg in the morning and 1.25mg in the evening.
He is diagnosed with holosystolic noise V/VI left and IV/VI right in the region of the heart apex. Above lungs breathing noise is OK.
Ultrasound gave prolapse of septal cusp, color Dopler found hard regurgitation in the area of the mitral valve, and mild regurgitation in the area of the tricuspis valve.
Diagnose was mitral and tricuspical enocradiosis, and prolapse of the tricuspical valve.
He may be for hours OK and then has an episode of hard cough. The dog didn't stop coughing in these three monts. Otherwise, breating while sleeping 20 per minute.
He like to walk, he has a lot energy, we walk around 1, 1 and a half hour even, shorter walk a few times a day and after he pees he fells better.
He eats normalny, plays with his toys and we don't see any other changes in the behavior. Today after the pill he vomited two time a white foam.
Now, my question is is that dose of 2.5 + 1.5mg of Vetmedin too much for him? He weights 7.5kg (16.5 lbs). And when we can expect that cough to calm down?
This week he had two day with very little coughing, now he coughs again, the worst episodes are in the morning.
And does the change in weather bother him? Thank you very much.

After a day and half got same episodes…3 within 12 hours . His vet told us he got syncope not seizure. Could be a mild heart attack or mild strong as a result of his murmur and HBP. Thank God the BP meds and blood thinner helped him get better . No more episodes but since then he got weird cough like choking and we do not know what to do.
