5 years later and this video is still helping people. I thought there was something extremely wrong with my baby, but he instantly started coughing less after honey and warm water! Will be trying the humidity as well.

My dog does the same, he’s an active 1 & a half year old dog & only does this weird breathing in & out type cough after he’s ran around the garden & played, I thought it was asthma but after looking at this video it might be kennel cough, don’t know how he got it cos he don’t interact with any other dogs much & he’s never been to any kennels either

In the beginning I thought it might be heart worm, but after seeing and hearing the dog you showed with this disease, am sure it is exactly that same sequence in the cough that ends with a spitting up saliva.
My pooch was a rescued 6 month old from death row (appears they put down certain breeds that have purple gums) at the animal shelter, and she had this same malady, which responded to medicine very quickly from the vet I took her to shortly after I adopted her.seven or eight years ago.

@@VeterinarySecretsI know this video is super old and you might not see this, but I got a puppy (Australian shepherd/cattle dog) about 4 months ago. She is up to date on all her shots. Around four months old, we woke up to her making this sound and were absolutely panicking. It eventually stopped after about 30 minutes and she went back to sleep. Well she’s almost 7 months old now and it just happened again last night! Same thing… about thirty minutes of hacking and gagging then she went back to sleep. Any ideas??😢

Thank you for this information. I just got a new pure breed yorkie and he has developed a slight occasional cough. Sounds similar to a geese’s honk.
It’s not all the time it’s very sporadic.
I have contacted many different vets to attempt to get him looked at and possibly treated but the bills are overly expensive and I live on a tight income. These home remedies are a major help to making sure my yorkie stays,remains healthy .

for nervous parents, like me, who wants remedies asap (info according to video):
1. Remove collar (or anything restrictive)
2. Add humidity to soothe airway (ie: humidity, steam from hot shower)
3. Honey (1 tablesoon per 20lbs)
4. Dandelion
5. Oregon grape
He actually said 1 TEAspoon per 20 lbs, not tablespoon

My Puggle has been coughing like this for 3 weeks now. Vet gave us us antibiotics and tralieve(tramadol) 😮 my boy won’t take either no matter what I hide it in. Honey seems to be the best thing and anti histamine tablet. Because we suspected KC the vet only did a brief examination in the car park
Woke up early this morning to my poor girl coughing sounded like she was choking and scared me to death ! After watching this video I do feel better she is still active eating drinking and happy. Going to try some of these remedies and hopefully she gets better

Woke up this morning with my 2 year old springer spaniel doing exactly the same as the dog on the video, thought something was stuck in his throat. He was playing around with a chocolate lab last week that he meets regularly when out and the owner mentioned that his dog had kennel cough, didn't say when and I assumed it was a while back or he would not have let his dog near others. Looks like my boy now has it. He is eating and running around fine but starts coughing after playing. thank you for posting this video.

Thank you SO much for making this video! I took my yorkie to the vet and kennel cough was never even mentioned. Allergies were assumed and medication given, only it hasn’t worked. Instead, it has made my dog lose his appetite (a side effect) and very drowsie.

Beautiful person. Dr of Veterinary..... Walking my shi tzu. Was looking at some plants and she sounded like a goose/duck noise. Coughing or semi choking. It took a minute to realize it was her making the noise. It scared the heck outta me.... I knew about giving honey. Really needed to see this vid. Calmed me. Down. I'll be watching listening carefully to see if it's just inflammation. Irritation. Rather then kennel cough. New dog mommy. Very attentive and want the best for this lil rescue. Girl... It's been just 2 days and still going to call vet tomorrow since she also has kidney disease but makes me a little less worried seeing this! She actually got up and started "coughing" while the dog in the video was lol

Sometimes I wonder if you have a tape recorder in my house, because you ALWAYS answer the question I have at the time! We just rescued a dog from shelter who has a severe case of Kennel Cough and I wanted to know how long it's contagious. We have dogs separated, change clothes & scrub down every time and use Lysol to sanitize. We have been doing antibiotics and steamy bathroom, which are helpful. Plus chest percussion to get up mucus. Will start using honey. THANK YOU

My dog started hacking at the beginning of the day, and by evening she was coughing and hacking constantly and ferociously. I feared a lodged object since she had been vaccinated for Bordatella, but after I realized that there was nothing there, I came back to the idea of kennel cough and watched this video. It definitely put me at ease knowing that my dog was not yet in critical condition, and I immediately took off her collar and gave her .5 mil of non-alcohol dandelion concentrate. The cough subsided within an hour and she is almost perfectly fine the next morning. Thank you so much for sharing this information with us, and for sparing me the panic and a trip to the vet.

Check your baby for collapsed trachea. Very common in chihuahuas. My precious dog got worse as he got older and the times he had the worst time was in the middle of the night. Remove all fragrance from the home and don’t use any fabric softener (even unscented) or scented laundry soap. You want to prevent the collapsing as your dog gets older. It’s like a straw bitten down on. It’s never perfectly round again and is prone to collapsing more frequently. It can get very scary so please heed my warning. Chihuahuas should only wear harnesses when walking for this reason.

@@JulieJackson-gw2vh My Whippet had a kennel cough vaccine {sprayed up her nose} but here we are- kennel cough a few months later, and she's never been in a kennel of doggy day care- it's just in the environment - There are many more dogs around since Covid.
It sounds like a rasping snort, a whole series of them, and the dog appeared a bit anxious while the paroxysm is happening.
But after a few days it changed to a 'cough'.
Edit...It has now gone away, thank goodness. it lasted about a week.

yep that's exactly what my dog did then my other dog started doing the same thing then i knew it was a contagious infection. It sounds like he's trying to cough up a furball but nothing comes out or sometimes some white stuff saliva comes out

Oh my gosh! I am sitting here crying with gratitude for finding this. My dog went to the groomer who is a mobile groomer in about a week later develop this cough that sounds like a honking gagging cough where he spits up white Sputum. I have been thinking he had congestive heart failure but now I see the possibility is high that he has kennel cough. Going to take him to the vet , but not accepting new patients for two weeks so I will try the honey and Oregon grape remedies as well as the dandelion leaf tincture. My Billy is seven years old And has really been in good shape up until this. He still eats, drinks and poops but he’s sleepy and now pretty much sleeps through the night with no coughing. I just can’t thank you enough for at least letting me see some other alternatives! We can sleep well tonight!

Check out Dr Jean Dodds and Dr Karen Becker who interviews professor Ronald Shultz. It was the shot that caused it. From the research I did the non core or optional jabs are a waste of time and money. According to Ronald Shultz one shot of Distemper, hepatitis, parvo at 16 weeks of age is all the dog should need for life. Do your homework. Also check out online dogs naturally magazine.

Whenever I've heard people talk about kennel cough, they act like it's a deadly condition! I mean, I'm sure if you don't stay on top of it it could turn into pneumonia and then it could be deadly but why does my vet's office have a notice on the door about it like it's ebola?!

Wow, just adopted a six month old terrier mix, and he started doing this cough. I thought he had something in his throat, but it continued and has been going on for like 3 days. The Oregon Grape extract worked wonders for my Westie. I had two sick Westies. One had it very mild and one had much tougher going and I used the Oregon Grape on the sicker one. I am so grateful for you sharing this information with us. I almost gave her antibiotics and because the tincture was working, I held off with the pills. She doesn’t tolerate antibiotics well. Would it be correct to say that this cough might sound much louder and more severe in some dogs? When my pup had kennel cough (presumably caught it from a dog in obedience class, though we aren't sure) I thought she had tracheal collapse and was dying! The honking/hacking was very, very loud. Now that the dog I'm babysitting is showing the same symptoms after having some separation anxiety being away from his people and being walked on a public trail, I'm guessing that he could also have kennel cough. This video is super reassuring, and I'm glad I can send it to his owners as further information.

My dog had a terrible cough about a year ago and I gave him Manuka honey for about two week,not normal honey as it doesn't have as many anti bacterial properties in it and it cleared up completely and has never returned. Be careful if you're dog is diabetic.

A dog coughing like this when it gets excited could be something other than just kennel cough. My dog has valley fever and it also has a productive cough when he gets excited or more often at night. It could also be a sign of heart disease and other things too.. so don't just think because your dog coughs like this, it's kennel cough..
