- So, you recently came back from holiday and had to book your dog into a kennel. He is now making horrible coughing sounds, as if something is stuck in his throat, but is otherwise looking healthy. Is this serious?
In today’s video, I will be discussing Kennel cough infection in dogs where I will explain exactly what the causes, clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention methods for Kennel cough are so that you will have a better idea of if your dog might be suffering from it and what you can do to help him.
Kennel cough, also known as Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis is a highly contagious respiratory disease that causes inflammation of the trachea and bronchi, which are basically the tubes leading to the lungs, and are very similar to the common cold in humans.
Now it is important to understand that Kennel cough is extremely contagious. If you suspect your dog might have the condition, you should keep him away from other dogs and contact your veterinarian.
Although kennel cough can sound terrible, most of the time it is not such a serious condition and most dogs will eventually recover without any treatment.
But, any dog that coughs could potentially be suffering from a much more serious disease, as Canine Distemper Virus and Canine Influenza virus both start off with symptoms nearly identical to kennel cough and other conditions that also cause similar coughs in dogs, include a collapsing trachea, canine bronchitis, asthma, and heart disease. So it is always better to take your coughing dog to the vet to have him checked out.

It is Sunday here, and all vets are closed, so I have to wait for Monday morning....your video put me to rest since it now appears my 15 yr old healthy Chihuahua probably has kennel cough. The people in S. Africa are fortunate to have you! Thank you
My chihuahua is 14yrs and seems like she has it too. Did your dog get better?
@@auriconatser4963 yes...within 2 days
My 12 year old chihuahua has been coughing. Completely agree and hope your senior doggies are doing well!
my dog has had a kennel cough for about two months.. he has had blood tests and antibiotics but the cough persists.. the vet doesn't know why the cough is still persistent.. does anyone know what it could be? thank you 🙏!!

@@DogtorPeteHi my dig has kennel cough and she has lost her appetite what can I give her since she's lost her appetite ....I know about the honey, but I was told the ones in the grocery stores r not to used ....anything else I can give her ?medications r sooo expensive in these hard times, I am all the way in st Lucia
Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing ❤❤❤❤
I’ve been giving my dog Benadryl and it relaxer and the cough tends to stop. I think it’s after every six hours on a older dog big size.
I’m a nurse who’s watched more Treatment videos than I care to admit. They were useless. However.. This Vet at least gave a couple useful treatments. Especially the Honey & H2O to soothe the mucus membranes, trachea & bronchioles.
….I also highly appreciate sustained for giving Anti-Inflammatory meds, but of COURSE in low doses, Short runs & in moderation.
…..Honestly dog owners likely feel worse than the dog, just listening to the Chronic Coughing.
I also do Chest or Lung 🫁 Phototherapy by gentle clapping on the dogs chest/lungs with Cupped Hands, on the UNDERSIDE of dog’s body along side the “Breastbone”; this loosens secretions & helps the dog to expectorate (spit mucus out).
I do wish however, some BIG PHARMA company who want our money, would market a SAFE COUGH RELIEVER even if it’s palliative. They won’t because it’s not lucrative for them to market. And they of course, warn us: “DON’T GIVE HUMAN MEDS”…. Still, a little Aspirin, Baby aspirin can help lower fever & some chest discomfort from chronic coughing. But ONLY BABY ASPIRIN 1 tablet.
❤ thank you so much for this video. God bless you. My Snowy has kennel cough
Thank you so much for the informative video, Dogtor Pete. 🙏🏼
Cool om te sien hoe vêr jy al gekom het! Trots op jou, man!
Yes Ruan. Baie dankie my maat! Waardeer dit baie. :)
Gracias 🙏🏼
Thank you from California..
how effective is the antibiotic therapy? and usually how many days?
Thank you so much from Detroit Michigan,,,
Thank you.
You're welcome!
I live on a fixed income and I took my corgi to the groomer but I gave him the kennel cough vaccine before taking him the groomer however I think the nasal vaccine made him sick he's been sick for almost two weeks we just started him with doxycycline and benedryl and after one dose he's already feeling better thankfully I had doxycycline on hand from a prescription from my Dr I looked up the dosage for his weight and gave the right amount the antihistamine helps the symptoms and the antibiotic is killing the infection he just wasn't getting any better if after7-10 days on medication doesn't help then he'll go to the vet he gets all his shots but I believe this vaccine wasn't in his system long enough to be effective!. Thanks for the video!
I just had 4 of my 8 dogs fixed and at that time I got the 4 the Nasal kennel cough vacinne. A couple days after 3 of the non fixed dogs got this symptoms they sound like a duck. Very alarming. You didn't mention that in this video. Could getting some of your dogs and not all cause the virus to come home with the dog who got treated? It seems to be our households case.
Thank you Pete
Please recommend syrup?
My dog was in the kennel yesterday all day at the vet. Now she is coughing. Is it possible to happen that quickly??
Thank you. Going to make an appointment for my 5 month old puppy.
My puppy is the same age what did they give your puppy for his kennel cough?
@@ItsTheeJayy I ended up taking him to the vet and they gave him some thing for inflammation and an antibiotic. The medicine for inflammation made him pee a lot and he kept peeing everywhere. 🤦🏻♀️😂
@@raleemay 😂overall did it get rid of his Kennel Cough?
@@ItsTheeJayy Yes!!
This is so helpful doctor💯 I’m unsure about the diagnosis. Are they supposed just to hear their lungs and diagnose it by hearing the cough? Is it accurate?? Or is there X-rays or blood exams, or collect a sample of their mucus to grow a bacteria? Are they worth it?
Very informative thank you. I suspect pollen may be causing our pups issues.
Great video! I’m using raw organic honey, a dog cough syrup with slippery elm and he’s doing much better after a couple days
❤
my dog muffin who is 13 years old has kennel and trachitis for weeks now I am afraid for both of is she has been on antibiotics and still is sick please help me
Can i give my dog some cough medicine/ human
Thanks Doc. I moved my Corgi off a raw diet and he is less healthy on expensive kibble. Currently hes coughing and lickibg it up. He eats the cats poo for gut bacteria however i dont think thats it. He's 2 yrs and i take him to a dog park
My dog just started coughing the last 3 days but hasn’t been in contact with any dogs except the one she has lived with for 10 years. How would she have gotten kennel cough if there is no outside contact. I’m not around dogs either. She is indoor dog. So is the other dog.
Thank you so much. I just adopt a puppy from Animal shelter.
I’ve got a 8 week old puppy showing symptoms. I’m freaking out cuz she’s a chihuahua and so small. I’ve been up all night and have to wait til tomorrow to take her to the vet
my dog has had a kennel cough for about two months.. he has had blood tests and antibiotics but the cough persists.. the vet doesn't know why the cough is still persistent.. does anyone know what it could be? thank you 🙏!!
My dog develops a cough 4days after the 1st dose of bronchocine vaccine
my dog came back from boarding developing a similar cough but i am confused. He is vaccinated against bortadella
There are many strains like the flu virus and the vaccine can’t cover all but the most likely
Dogs can still develop kennel cough, even though they've been vaccinated. It usually lessens the severity, though.
Does this info pertain to cats also?
No. Cats can not catch kennel cough.
I just adopted a dog with kennel cough. My vet just prescribed my dog cough pills 🤦🏻♀️ and said i shouldn't worry it will go away normally on its on & unfortunately now im the one coughing and feeling woozy & sneezing🤦🏻♀️🤧🤒😡
Humans cannot get it from their dogs. Lol
"If you're from Africa, why aren't you black?" Lol
My dog has been vaccinated two years in a row and she has gotten Kennel cough both years probably from some dirty unvaccinated dog that lives in our apartment building. Poor thing is feeling so ill right now and it’s a long weekend.
You are killing your dog, you just lowered his immune system to minimum. Your dog should be taken from you asap as you are just a silent murderer of innocent animal who didn't agree to what you have done to it
Many thanks Pete for this video which I found really valuable at a point where my dog has some symptoms. [One further comment- the video refers several times to dogs as a “he” - mine is a “she”. I think this is really worth working to change, as the exclusive language that many of us grew up with is just that - it *excludes*… You’ll gain the support of a wider audience as a result too.]
He hates the bathroom because i wadh him in my shower. Great name for a youtube channel by the wsy
Get to the point.
Well aren't you a ray of sunshine
Great video! I’m using raw organic honey, a dog cough syrup with slippery elm and he’s doing much better after a couple days
