First of all. You would love the album Thirteenth Step. It is by the band A Perfect Circle (same lead singer as Tool) and it's entirely about addiction. It is hauntingly beautiful and cuts to the bone Second. In my personal experience with addiction (not an overly interesting story. It was smoking.... Lame I know) the day I gave up was the day I realised how my mind tricked me. I was an angry smoker. When the things from life past and present made me angry I'd smoke. I was leaving for work early one morning and I found myself on my last cigarette and at an intersection. Left was to go to buy smokes before work, right was work. In that moment I found myself parading around the things that bothered me. Then it hit me. Addiction isn't a loud voice telling you what to do. It is a whisper giving you a reason to do it. I turned right that morning and I haven't turned back yet. Recognise your triggers and (in my experience) recognise when your mind is trying to trigger you. It's all a lot clearer after that
Adam (Tool Guitar player) opinion on this song: Tool guitarist Adam Jones explained in an interview with Guitar School: "The song and video are based on a guy we know who is at his artistic best when he's loaded. A lot of people give him s--t for that. I don't tell people to do or not do drugs. You can do what you want, but you have to take responsibility for what happens. If you become addicted and a junkie, well, that's your fault."
Early on in the song around 2:21 there's that brief part, maybe a measure or half a measure (with Tool it's hard to tell with all the time key changes they like to use), where the notes played by the guitar start together and then start to diverge and become dissonant. I've always seen that bit as symbolic of how addiction causes a person get diverted from what their life path would have been. And also a symbol of their mental state becoming unstable. It really sets the stage for the rest of the song, at least for me.
Do we consider Tool metal? An old friend I took to see Tool leaned over a few songs in and asked when they will start rocking. Laughed a little. RIP Kelly, still love and miss you 23 years later
4.5 years sober here. Go to an AA meeting, whatever your preconceptions are of AA they are likely incorrect. All anyone wants there is to help the newcomer get sober. Doing so helps them stay sober. One day at a time
From HeartSupport_Community: @AngryBirdsFiddleMessery Hi, Thanks so much for opening up. We wanted to share a request from a Tool fan that was similar to yours. They said: I need to get my life back together with all the struggles going on all I wanna do is drink and it’s hard because I need to stop. I miss how life used to be before my sister passed away and I don’t know I just have so much to blame myself for and it’s hard going thorough it all by myself... If it's helpful, here's what one of our repliers wrote in response to them: @Yarboroughlauren, I'm so sorry for your loss, friend. Losing a sibling is beyond words. In such cirsumstances, we can tend to think about alcohol as a way to cope. But you're already aware that it's not healthy and you deserve way much better. There are other ways, healthier ones, to get through this progressively. Get rid of alcohol if you still have some at your home. Maybe consider reaching out to a supportive group or a therapist. You don't have to deal with this alone. When you feel overwhelmed by what's going on in your life, it's okay to ask for help. Hang in there. You are not alone. Thank you for your courage. -HeartSupport
Hey can you guys do an Avenged Sevenfold song like Nightmare, Save Me, I Won't See You Tonight (part one and two), Unholy Confessions, So Far Away or Fiction (Fiction was their drummer who died's suicide or death note and So Far Away was the bands song to tribute the drummer the Rev who died and for context the Rev died from drug/alcohol overdose) R.I.P The Rev you will be remembered foREVer
The first time the line "I am just a worthless liar, I am just an imbecile, I will only complicate you, Trust in me and fall as well, I will find a center in you, I will chew it up and leave, I will work to elevate you, Just enough to bring you down", I interpret that as the addict saying that to whoever is close to them because they want to push them away because they don't believe they deserve the love that person has for them. The second time that line comes up, I interpret that as the substance speaking to the addict, telling it what it's going to do to them.
As a native, they don't care depending on who you are related to. From my perspective, they are hypocrites. They have a rehabilitate centre but promote casinos like nothing, and what do casinos have? Booze, with a side of gambling addiction. If you know somebody that has an addiction, get them help, and please dont abandon them either. They are looking for help but dont want to admit it.
I agree! If you're not picking up the nuances of the lyrics of Tool songs, your missing out! I always believed this song was from the perspective of the drugs and alcohol!
Completely agreed 💯 the videos distract from the music. I love listening LOUD and feeeeling every note reverberate through my body, feeling every word.
Every time I hear the censored version of this song, it hurts.
Censored songs are Blasphemy, I agree!
A puppy dies every time the censored version is played…
It's only 2 words. Now if they play Aenema censored, that's horrible... Half the song would be cut
I know right!!! I hate censorship on songs. it just feels wrong when Idiots start touching other peoples art.
Get stronger

I want to hear more Joe and Tool. All the songs are introspective metal rock vs. outward expression and Joe knows!

@heartsuport, I have always loved this song. I have battled drinking but fallen in love with the platform you all run on. Metal is my soul
You should watch the Live - Reading Festival 1993 video. Oh, and censored/edited versions of songs SUK!
Even if i like the clay figures in this video i do agree that live version is so much more intense.
@@soylentgreen607 Then again, the audio quality of the music on that video sucks bigtime.

Yes and no. They started as alternative metal, than progressive metal and sometimes art rock.
Love this song !
As I sit here, sipping whiskey, knowing I need help to "get" sober. Im lost on asking for help. I don't know what I should do.
Please check the description box for possible options. You are worth the effort. You are worthy of care. 🫶
Proud of you for being able to post this comment

If you are going to have him listen to Sober, it should be the live version. Don't use Tool videos, just audio. Unless it's the Danny cam of Pnumea.
Have y'all done TOOL's "Culling Voices" yet? I just got into it and I have to say the lyrics seem like they have quite the message.
Please someone of you need to react to Count me out - Kendrick Lamar
This song saved me
It would be nice to see how your therapist react to a song like Ana's Song (Open Fire) by Silverchair. I have a friend that struggles with it's topic.

Y’all need to listen to low by wage war
It’s the most mental health song ever
🤘🏻🌀
I think watching the official videos for Tool songs on a first listen is too distracting. I would stick with lyric videos.
