I am in no way a power user. I'm an old lady, technically challenged, who uses her toys to watch lots of TH-cam videos, Prime, and Netflix. I also write an occasional email and that's about it! Chrome is easy for me, as well as affordable (in most cases), so I like the concept of having a detachable keyboard that I can keep handy for those rare instances when I type more than a comment. I think this will be my next purchase, replacing my HP X360. Thanks for the review. :)
It s a great computer at a great price! I highly recommend. With the OLED display, and the screen size and dimensions make it perfect for content consumption viewing like Netflix and Prime.
Glad my video was helpful, that was one of my earlier ones- they get better... I can't believe how great this tablet is, I love it! Sounds like you got a great deal, enjoy!
Good review. I just got my duet 5 and so far I'm pretty happy. I was gonna buy a surface pro 7 on sale at best buy but I guess it's not standard for windows machines to come with office, and I didn't want to pay $100/year so I bought this Chromebook instead.
I have this Chromebook and i don't think the display is too dim or not bright enough. In fact, I'm having to put dark mode wherever I can to reduce the brightness for my eyes. My only gripe with this device is that I wish the keyboard with backlit.
backlit keyboard would have been great, but I think that is too much to ask for this device. There are a lot of laptops that dont even have a backlit keyboard.
I hope soon they will fix the lagging issue when connecting to remote server using ssh / mosh. I-ve tried connecting from linux on chromeos, termius (android app on chromeos), ssh shell (chrome extension). All has this problem. I'm using mosh to connect. Its not server problem nor network problem. I guess it's the networking problem on chromeos.
i think the gen 2 processor is identical to the earleyer version ,, just a little bit faster IF you want to do Linux development i would suggest one of the i5/16GB/255GB Chromebooks
Thanks for the review! So can you play an external monitor with this? Also, when watching TH-cam, are you stuck with those black bars on the top and bottom? That's my pet peave even with big screen tvs. You have a giant screen, but still have those annoying black bars on the top and bottom when watching movies. What is the point of a big screen, if the whole screen isn't even utilized? Thanks for any answers!
I have not used it as an external monitor but as far as I know it can be done with this Duet and the original Duet. This chromebook has a 16:9 aspect ratio so most newer content will fill the entire screen. For comparison Ipads have a 4:3 ratio. For streaming, some content will have black bars on top and bottom but they are small. Occasionally, within the same streaming app some content will fill the entire screen while others will have the bars- usually older content not filmed in 16:9 aspect ratio. TH-cam material fills the entire screen (but some movies older movies may not). With the 13.3 inch screen, even if your media has some letterboxing it will still be a bigger image then most tablets. This is a great tablet for media consumption. If your still concerned buy the chromebook from a store that will let you return it with no restocking fee. Hope that helps!
@@techgadgets100 great! I appreciate the quick reply. I am simply looking for a tablet with external capabilities to use in my karaoke shows. I will be using only TH-cam for the karaoke. Occasionally I may need to connect to a house TV or external monitors I bring myself. This sounds like what I'm looking for . Thanks again. And God bless you and yours.
If you need a touch pad, the Apple one is glass and works really well with Chromebooks. Though the charging cable is usb 3.0, so unable to charge with this Chromebook.
I agree, for tablet size, it's kind of awkward. Either too long when in the portrait mode, or too wide when in the landscape position. IMO, the iPad has the perfect form factor.
Thanks for the great review! Do you know if it's possible to connect a Xbox controller with it and play android games with controller support like Minecraft?
Sorry, it does not come with screen protector. And finding a case to use for drop protection is very hard to find. But it does come with back cover which doubles as a stand and a keyboard which covers and protects the screen when closed. I love this tablet but accessories are limited.
what do you think about the latest voice to text with editing commands ( works off line they say ) look in accessibility "Dictation " There is a GLASS KBD sort of back lite,,, what do you think of the recent handwriting recognition upgrade Squid is ok for palm rejection,, ARTrage is a nice Android paint APP
can you further illustrate the problems you are having with the USI pen and then compared with Spen & apple I would suggest you report problems,,, ALT SHIFT i ,,, they cant fix what they don't know about
No significant problems, I just found it a little more laggy and it did not recognize my handwriting as well. It also did not register my tap all the time.
Yeah I bought one of the first commercially available USI styluses that you could use with the duet and other Chromebooks from Lenovo. And it worked fine, but it's just not very feature-rich or developed. Chromebooks are still relatively early in developing USI stylus support. There was a magnifier, and a few other options but still relatively limited. I mean it's nice to have one but it's not nearly as useful as the s pen or even the Wacom 2nd gen stylus that you could use on the LG v60, velvet or wing
@@michaelcorcoran8768 Chrome os is updated every 4 weeks for the next 8 years on the DUET,, so it will improve... I use ARTrage, with both an S-Pen Samsung & USI pen on DUET,, I find its ok.. My old ASUS C214 wacom ,, now has the HP CURSIVE "APP" included with Chrome OS 102,, Ive not tried it yet.
An S-Pen is the only stylus I've used for any length of time. The last time I used anything else was 3-4 years ago when I was evaluating the HP Chromebook X2 (not the now-current X2 11). I'm sure I very much under-utilize the S-Pen, so for me the "problem" is feature related - it's all about feel. The S-Pen experience is like that of writing on paper with a ballpoint pen - it's smooth and silent. Using a USI stylus (Penoval USI702, Penoval USI150) with the Chromebook Duet 5 is the exact opposite of this - it has a very plastic-on-glass feel, and every contact the pen makes with the screen is audible. I can't imagine using that combination in any type of professional setting like a meeting. Any non-EMR pen I've tried (S-Pen is an EMR pen) has been exactly the same way. The problem is in the physical design of the pen tip - something that I think would have been fixed by now if anyone involved believed it was a problem.
I have noticed on nearly EVERY review on this product that the screen has a marked magenta tint to the white balance. Is that true in real life or just a video thing?
I have been staring at it and I cant pick up a magenta tint at all. I was looking at a few things including an almost full white screen, if anything there is maybe a slight yellowish tint- maybe, but I think all my screens have that- so its probably me. I have watched a lot of movies on it from a few sites and never had a complaint. I also use it to read magazines and have never noticed a color balance issue. If you are really concerned buy from somewhere that allows a return.

hi, I'm surprised how big the black bars are in the video when the display is 16:9

Can we play 4k media on duet 5 from storage or from external source?
