  • Was up in the moutains in Nepal - this was without doubt the hardest climb I have ever made up to get into a position where a shot was possible on this big Thar who had bedded down under a steep overhang to get out of the fierce sun. It took 3 hours of death defying climbing to get on a rocky outcrop opposite him and the range was 455m and very steep uphill.
We really did plan to get the shot on camera but the Thar stood up rather abruptly as the sun was now shining into his shady overhang, I told the guide to start filming then took the shot.Alas he was too busy looking at the Thar to bother with filming!! At the shot he just collapsed and bounced, rolled hundreds of metres downhill much to the delight of all of us watching! It really would have been absolutely spectacular to get this on film!!!! It was 11.30am when I took the shot - we left camp at 5am and were back in camp by 3pm with the Thar sunburnt, cut to pieces but very very happy!
The altitude was about 14,000ft but made the sheep hunt seem like walk in the park due to the insane gradient of the hills these animals live on! Their blonde mane also makes them nearly invisible as the hillside they live on is covered with clumps of dry grass the same colour.
Hunting That in Nepal is totally differant to hunting them in N.Z - I would rate it 10Xharder in terms of finding the animals, the terrain and just getting into the area!
If you are after a big Thar and want a real hunting experience get to Nepal asap - best hunt I have ever done!!
The 210gr Berger VLD bullet had worked its magic and helped me bag a 15.4" Thar with 9.5"bases
