Hurricane Ida vs. Hurricane Katrina: Comparing the two storms

- There are a lot of similarities between the two storms. WFAA meteorologist Jessie Hawila compares them.
Many people are drawing comparisons between Ida and Katrina. Eerily enough, they're expected to share the same date of landfall. Katrina was August 29, 2005 and Ida will make landfall August 29, 2021. While there are tons of similarities to be found, subtle differences between the two could make a big difference in what happens in New Orleans.
The storm surge with Hurricane Ida is expected to be extreme and life-threatening. Some parts of the Louisiana coast could see storms surge of 10-15 feet.

Katrina made its major landfall on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Our flood surge was over 28ft. Our Nola friends got the worst of Katrina the next day when the levees broke. We were wiped out for 80+ miles for most of the five blocks from the beach but once it left, it left. Nola remained stranded and stuck for weeks. It was hard for us to know even in our traumatic and devastating situation. Sending prayers for LA and MS!

Don't forget Mississippi, with Katrina everyone spoke about New Orleans when it actually hit the Mississippi coast. The levees broke the next day.

We lost everything in Katrina. We lived in Bay Saint Louis MS. That’s where the eye of the storm went over. I hate when reporters only mention New Orleans. Yes New Orleans flooded terribly, and many people lost their lives and property, but it wouldn’t have been near as bad if the city officials did what they were supposed to do with the levees years leading up to the storm. Mississippi lost more lives and property then they did., but that’s never mentioned. So to all of the people of the Golf Coast who lost there lives, and for all of us who survived it. My Family still thinks of the devastation we all went through. We are also thinking of you during and after hurricane Ida. So to all reporters learn some respect, and mention the whole Golf coast. When it comes to Katrina.

Because A LOT of the water devastation that happened in NOLA resulted from the poor drainage system and levee, which they do fail to mention…just like they constantly fail to mention that south Louisiana is like a bowl. You drive down into south Louisiana bc if it’s low elevation, being that much of it is below sea level.
I agree. I live in Biloxi. I was here for Katrina. It looked like a bomb went off here. We lost everything! Literally walked away with the clothes on our backs. We got the hit from the actual Hurricane. Louisiana had flooding after the storm because of its weak levees.
Amen to that. The City of New Orleans received a federal grant to improve the levee and drainage but decided to spend it on sports programs for underprivileged kids. You still hear whining about NO and Katrina to this day. I think Harvey probably flooded more homes in Texas overall than Katrina did NO. Houston got all the publicity and the smaller towns received no mention nor funds.
Same I 100% agree with you. We have a house on the jordan river in Bay Saint Louis right now and I’m really hoping it’s still there after Ida. Katrina wiped it clean out and we rebuilt right after the storm
I saw this on my schools tv, they were showing the aftermath of Katrina… I swear what he just said doesn’t come true and combine the fact of that levee system to. Please stay safe in New Orleans, the surrounding areas as well! I’m getting so concerned even now!
From 10 am to 1:00 pm could see it drop from Cat 4 to a Cat 3. But that's a big maybe.

Guys, there are multiple factors at play here. It is not all about wind speed. Yes, Ida had a windspeed of 150-160mph when eye wall hit land. Katrina on the other hand had around 130+mph wind speed when eye wall came ashore. There are many differentiating factors involved in how catastrophic the hurricane may be. Storm surge was the devastating factor with Katrina...We saw 30-35ft storm surge VS. an estimated 10-20ft storm surge with Ida. Yes, 10-20ft surge is significant. But has no comparison to what Katrina brought. Also, Katrina gained maximum intensity further off of the coast, allowing a much greater volume of water to be affected by the storm, therefore creating a much larger body of water subjected to storm surge...also the trajectory in which Katrina approached the coast was much worse than the approach angle of Ida. With Ida, the intensification happened much later...much closer to land. Therefore there was not quite as much time to build such a severe storm surge as Katarina did.

Its sad to see so many people in high positions these days that are derelict in sacred duties involving life and death potentials. Prayer is needed considering this part is untested. I just hope all the vunerable people were evacuated this time and not abandoned.

yea, that's right. they 'drove' the sheet piling deeper into the ground at the outfall canals. that in itself caused a lot of the city to flood after the storm had passed - I had property out by the University of New Orleans and experienced 11ft of water ~
Gee Katrina hit Mississippi right through Waveland. New Orleans wasn't the only one hit. I don't get how so many forecasters ignore this.

@@xtremej2575 most of New Orleans issues were compounded by levy issues. Mississippi was hit dead on and the east quadrant stretched into Alabama. Mississippi lost lives, the storm surge obliterated structures all along the Mississippi gulf coast. No one can argue lives lost in Louisiana, but The press put more emphasis on New Orleans when the devastation was catastrophic in Mississippi, tornadoes up through Purvis, Hattiesburg, Into Alabama. I can put up plenty of footage from the Mississippi Gulf Coast that shows the devastating effects from Katrina. The entire coastal counties in Mississippi were affected. But the press ignores the land mass in between Alabama and Louisiana.
@@xtremej2575 The aftermath in Mississippi was very destructive and unrecognizable. Everything is completely different now than this time 16 years ago. New Orleans just had the leeves destroyed.

Worth remembering that Katrina didn't center punch New Orleans. It center punched Biloxi where it actually measured as a cat 5. How do I know? My family was there. In terms of size and power, Katrina was on another level.

Did you watch the video? What made Katrina deadly to NO was the point of landfall and straight northerly path; not the windspeed (category). Ida's winds will be much more devastating, but it will also be concentrated in less populated/built-up areas, and because of Katrina's pat NO endured a 28' storm surge, update I just watched live suggests they will be maybe HALF that this time -- so the levees there should hold?

I want to say on the record.... PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE MADE IN HURRICANE KATRINA. During post-Hurricane Katrina, there were American Soldiers who came home from fighting in Iraqi Freedom to find they were homeless. Due to the FEMA debacle, they remained homeless for months to years. It was strangers like me that helped them get back on their feet. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THAT MISTAKE AGAIN!
Katriina hit Bay St Louis was hit. NOLA didn't built up the levees so they could prosper off casinos. Katirina took a right at the last minute.

All it takes to compare is to remember that Hurricane Katrina stretched across the entire Gulf of Mexico. And the high level hurricane force winds stretched for MILES from the eye. Katrina hit the Mississippi Coast like a massive F2 tornado. That said, it's crazy that IDA jumped to almost Cat 5 in just the last 18 hours or so. I think Ida is moving faster, and is not as wide. But dang! I feel bad for anybody who decided to ride it out!
The most similar storm that I can remember was Gustav in 2008.
Gustav was way worse than Katrina in baton rouge

The only time I've ever had to evacuate Houma was Gustav, this one is following the exact same track. They're predicting a higher storm surge with Ida than was with Gustav, but flooding really wasn't much of a problem around Houma with Gustav. Downed trees and power lines was the biggest problem, and they weren't letting people back in Terrebonne Parish for nearly 4 or 5 days after the storm. That's why people don't trust the mandatory evacuations.

My neighbor had relatives come in from there 2hrs ago. She thought 3 people were coming but 9 people showed up 😂! They were suppose to go somewhere else but traffic was so bad and everybody was tired. I gave her all the blowup mattress I had and a key to the shed because she’s going to need it. I stocked up August 1st with 12 cases of water and plenty of can goods and frozen dinners. I told people when they got those stimulus checks to stock up! But NO everybody going on vacations and buying cars. I need a new car but if my baby can get me from A to B with air I’ll be ok until next year 😂! I just change the oil and keep new tires on it 😂!
Im all the way in illinois but i have friends that live in Houma and i hope their homes will still be there when they return. My husband said if we knew a tornado was coming tomorrow and it was for sure going to hit our house, we could packed it all up in 8hrs. Everything....including most of our appliances would go into a rented truck and we go somewhere safe for a few days. I just think it would be way easier to fix your house, if it does flood, if all you stuff wasnt inside too. Its a lot easier to rip up floors and drywall when there isnt a ton of wet furniture around.

There are natural signs that a hurricanes or a big wet is coming that I’m sure Indigenous peoples in America were aware of just as the Aborigines were in Australia. Ants for instance carry their pupa/babies up high into trees, houses or cliffs. Certain birds fly towards or away from storms. Bats leave their normal roosts to find more secure shelter or migrate away. Fish go into a feeding frenzy. Herd animals like deer and kangaroos gather together skittishly. Clouds, winds and waves change. And of course you can feel the uncomfortable change in air pressure, temperature, humidity and grittiness in the wind as a hurricane approaches.

*A lot of people stayed in their homes because the shelters didn't allow them to bring their pets.* The National Guardsmen were ordered to shoot the dogs roaming on the streets after Katrina passed, even though there were animal rescue teams from all over the country that showed up to help place the pets back with their owners. This wasn't a rumor. I was personally very active in the Katrina rescue effort, and know it to be true. I have an 18 year old blind poodle. No fricking way I'd leave her behind and get on a bus.
It's not that simple, a lot of people can't leave cause of the short amount of time the storm will arrive, or poverty limitations
The buses came after the storm only buses left out that day had the prisoner in them
The point is to let as many die as possible, mainly poor people...they know their homes won't protect them
The improvements made to pumps and levees since katrina has been top level engineering. I guess we'll see what happens. It only takes one weak link. Mother nature can't be stopped.

It won't hit cat 5. It's going too fast and there is no cold front to delay it. The turbulence from the west side is also funneling it N / NW.
