Florida homes are built to be hurricane resistant. They are built entirely differently from homes elsewhere in the country. The main concern would be flooding about now.
Paper? What part of Florida do you live in? Since Andrew, homes are required to have the first story built entirely from CMU block, with every third cell having rebar through and fastened to the structures foundation and filled with 3000 psi concrete. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Each home is rigorously inspected, and materials used thoroughly tested. I happen to work for an engineering firm that performs these tests. Plus this is florida, we've been through worse. I personally, am not worried about it tbh.
I lived through hurricane HUGO.... it was the most frightening experience watching trees bent over at 45 degree angles then ripped straight up into the air, dozens of bright blue horizontal lightning bolts zooming across the entire pitch black sky illuminating the ghostly looking clouds, winds so strong that windows roofs and cars were blown to pieces, rain so hard it hurt like a dog bite, as people were crying & screaming while huddled inside a dark wet church with half a roof for hours on end. When the daylight finally returned, Charleston was mostly destroyed.
@@dewdrop8626 They are to us. Well, in a coping sense. I've lived in Florida all my life (25 years), hurricane memes are killing me right now. So stay calm, prep your house for debris, and hold on tight for the ride! It's wild. Before and after hurricanes, the very best of Florida's community comes out which is really the best part of this whole thing. Everyone's helping their neighbors.
meoirin even in a concrete house you will lose your roof, your windows and door can be blown in which will allow wind inside which will destroy interior walls. This can weaker the structure and the house can still collapse.
Reckk why would you build a light roof on concrete walls? That's nonsense. In the Mexican Caribbean the entire house is built with concrete and stone, and, none of them suffer this damage in a hurricane.
DynamicUrufu. But people like in my island of Puerto Rico dont build in flooding-proned areas for the most part. Mostly because the Government plans well. Also, most of our windows are made of steel. They are what we call persianas. Those resist a whole lot. I was in PR in 1998 during Georges which was Category 3. We got 120 mph winds and they didnt even flinch.
Humble Kanaka me, what's worse is that a lot of homes in Hawaii are pretty old (like mine) so idk how well it's gonna hold up :/ especially the jalousie windows
Cat 5 Hurricane Michael hit my town in October of last year, absolutely catastrophic and traumatizing to go through. Praying that Dorian doesn’t change direction and hit us again, we can’t even sustain a tropical storm, let alone a Hurricane. Praying for everyone in the path of Dorian. Stay strong, stay safe
in 2004 we had 3 hurricanes in Central Florida and while it was fine for me, some people had no power for like 2 weeks, that's a tough thing to go through. Good luck.
It shouldn't be as bad as a Category 5, it should at least weaken down to a Category 3 before it hits Oahu. We should be praying for Big Island, as they got hit by the hurricane when it was a Category 5.
CAT 1: Decent wind guests and rain CAT 2. larger wind gusts and more rain CAT 3: big wind gusts, trees may fall over, rain may flood CAT 4. Giant wind gusts, peeling and other house damages possible, rain has a higher chance to flood CAT 5: HUMONGOUS, TOWERING WIND GUSTS. RAIN HAS A VERY LARGE CHANCE OF FLOODING. HOUSES MADE OF WOOD WITH WEAK MATERIAL WILL GET SERVERE HOUSE DAMAGE, SUCH AS ROOF FALLING OFF, WINDOWS EXPLODING, HOUSE FALLING APART, ETC. That is how it really is.
One huge consideration he didn't mention is wind gusts. Here in North Carolina, Florence was supposedly a Cat 1 but some of the gusts were equal to a two or even a three. I had a heavy Barbecue grill tucked into a corner where it was totally protected on two sides and partially on a third side. I found it smashed up ten yards away. Also, lost several large trees.
The thing is this doesn't really tell you much, Florida houses are designed with a Concrete exterior for strength in the 90's and up. So nothing like that can happen to a Concrete house like today. That's something you see in places like Northern Alabama, Kentucky, West Virginia, ect. Most coast states are made of concrete for hurricane safety standards
We had Hurricane Sally hit, and I've been on edge ever since. My county was hurt pretty badly, but I will never be unprepared again. I watched our backyard tree lift from the ground in the high wind gusts, and it was terrifying.
i had hurricane maria hit be "Category 5" i was left with no power for a year straight but me and our families went to go visit each other and we just stayed at my grandmas for a long time until everything was better
@@Person.Person_Person A YEAR??!!😮 Dayum I'm sorry to hear that... That's inexcusable... It took them over a year to restore your power but the second you're late on your utility bill they cut you off... Smh. Here's a tip: Windows: use shutters. Doors vulnerable to the storm: seal them as best as you can. I would try and use shutters on those, too, but putting up shutters is something my parents do.
One thing people don't realize is that they're showing the worst case scenario for each category. I've been in quite a few and I'll say usually they're not as bad as the damage they show but it can be with certain factors
A hurricane is categorized by its strongest 1 minute sustained winds, usually in the upper right quadrant and eye wall. Especially on larger storms, seeing an impact from a major hurricane may not equal major hurricane force winds at your location but it always demands respect.
Yep, I've been through Hurricane Ike and my house had no damage. It was still a Cat 2 when it crossed over Houston. I had 75 MPH sustained winds with gust close to 100 MPH. Other structures got damaged, but not my house or others in my neighborhood.
@@billybassman21 they might be talking about housing not meant to withstand a hurricane, like say you live really far up north, theres not gonna be hurricanes up there
@@MelonMan But there will be tornado's. A home should be able to withstand an EF3 tornado. It will probably have damage, but shouldn't need to be totally rebuilt.
But, if you live in Florida you most likely have a concrete house like me. Which means the roof can still fall off and windows can break, so you don't really have to worry about you walls
This man standing in a category 5 as a house gets destroyed behind him. He changes the force of the storm at will. He is the bringer of demise to those that soil justice.

Same I live in NC so it's gonna hit us directly 😐

Me too
I lived through hurricane HUGO.... it was the most frightening experience watching trees bent over at 45 degree angles then ripped straight up into the air, dozens of bright blue horizontal lightning bolts zooming across the entire pitch black sky illuminating the ghostly looking clouds, winds so strong that windows roofs and cars were blown to pieces, rain so hard it hurt like a dog bite, as people were crying & screaming while huddled inside a dark wet church with half a roof for hours on end. When the daylight finally returned, Charleston was mostly destroyed.
IAmAerody I feel you dude but it depends where you are tho for ex Raleigh is goin to get hit pretty bad

I have survived Irene and Sandy in NJ.
This will be my first one living in Florida!!

Hurricanes in Florida are no joke.
A conclusion would be? *DON'T build paper houses.*
IKR.
thats not the purpose of a house
meoirin even in a concrete house you will lose your roof, your windows and door can be blown in which will allow wind inside which will destroy interior walls. This can weaker the structure and the house can still collapse.
Reckk why would you build a light roof on concrete walls? That's nonsense. In the Mexican Caribbean the entire house is built with concrete and stone, and, none of them suffer this damage in a hurricane.
Daniel Josue Balam Ceballos except for the windows, doors and if flooding occurs, the concrete building will be useless.
Anyone else come back to this video every time a hurricane is in your area

Who's here for hurricane lane in Hawaii? 😟
Humble Kanaka me, what's worse is that a lot of homes in Hawaii are pretty old (like mine) so idk how well it's gonna hold up :/ especially the jalousie windows

its a cat thanks bro mahaloz 🤙
Ok we don't care if you don't pray some of us do keep your opinions to yourself ok. Thanks tho! 🤙🏽
@@kaichikuma our house is old too. The house rattles when we stomp in the living room. Hopefully it weakens.
I got this in my recommendations while hurricane Dorian is coming
Thanks TH-cam
Every time there's major hurricane this gets recommended to people, prove me wrong
Good luck.
So sorry you have to go through all of that, stay safe
I remember hurricane Michael, at some point all I could see was pure white outside the window
this year and in 2017 i had Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Ian in Florida.
Me during a hurricane: Nah, we'll probably only get rain, the house will hold.
Hurricane: Hold my beer
I live in Oahu, Hawaii and we are about to get hit by hurricane lane, a reported category 5 hurricane, please pray for all of Hawaii mahalos 🙏🏽
It shouldn't be as bad as a Category 5, it should at least weaken down to a Category 3 before it hits Oahu. We should be praying for Big Island, as they got hit by the hurricane when it was a Category 5.

watching this because my family in Florida is about to be hit really bad by Milton. I’m horrified for them, may god be merciful. 🙏
CAT 1: Decent wind guests and rain
CAT 2. larger wind gusts and more rain
CAT 3: big wind gusts, trees may fall over, rain may flood
CAT 4. Giant wind gusts, peeling and other house damages possible, rain has a higher chance to flood
CAT 5: HUMONGOUS, TOWERING WIND GUSTS. RAIN HAS A VERY LARGE CHANCE OF FLOODING. HOUSES MADE OF WOOD WITH WEAK MATERIAL WILL GET SERVERE HOUSE DAMAGE, SUCH AS ROOF FALLING OFF, WINDOWS EXPLODING, HOUSE FALLING APART, ETC.
That is how it really is.
drewthestrange YT the wind part is true the rain part is not because for example Florence was a Cat 1 at landfall and look at all the flooding it did!
Imagine if a cat 6 happens
imagine how the small tree is fine from cat 1 cat 2 cat 3 cat 4 cat 5
I have seen a brick wall fall partially off a house in a CAT 3
One huge consideration he didn't mention is wind gusts. Here in North Carolina, Florence was supposedly a Cat 1 but some of the gusts were equal to a two or even a three. I had a heavy Barbecue grill tucked into a corner where it was totally protected on two sides and partially on a third side. I found it smashed up ten yards away. Also, lost several large trees.
That one was bad
hurricane matthew am i right
Matthew T. Batts yeah
Yup
Quepasa you?
Yes sir
why im here
Who’s here watching this before Milton makes landfall
The thing is this doesn't really tell you much, Florida houses are designed with a Concrete exterior for strength in the 90's and up. So nothing like that can happen to a Concrete house like today. That's something you see in places like Northern Alabama, Kentucky, West Virginia, ect. Most coast states are made of concrete for hurricane safety standards
but most of the roofs are wooden so they fly away. In Europe houses are built properly even without a hurricane danger.

there’s a category 5 here in hawai‘i! please pray for us
And what is praying gonna do????
Kim Jong-un ask god to save you
We had Hurricane Sally hit, and I've been on edge ever since.
Smh. I hope you at least got some kind of credit or something like that, either a few months free light ( 🥶😵 which I wouldn't count on cuz you know how the power companies are no one gets free light.. only people who get a reduction on they bill are the people who work on the utility poles.. ) but still considering the circumstances you should have gotten at least some type of credit for the time that your power was out.

HOW DID HE SURVIVE WITHOUT THE GREY CIRCLE?!😱😱😱
mark eliot doesnt need it
It’s a green circle now.
He’s crazy use you gray circle
Here's a tip:
Windows: use shutters.
Doors vulnerable to the storm: seal them as best as you can. I would try and use shutters on those, too, but putting up shutters is something my parents do.
Update: my parents went as far as putting shutters on our patio doors, front door, and laundry room door.
This guy can survive a catogory 5 hurricane unlike my doors during catogory 1 hurricanes.

Respect to this guy for going through a category 5 hurricane🙏🏻
Roof: *gets destroyed and flies away*
Man: *hello and welcome to my TH-cam video*
One thing people don't realize is that they're showing the worst case scenario for each category.
I've been in quite a few and I'll say usually they're not as bad as the damage they show but it can be with certain factors
A hurricane is categorized by its strongest 1 minute sustained winds, usually in the upper right quadrant and eye wall. Especially on larger storms, seeing an impact from a major hurricane may not equal major hurricane force winds at your location but it always demands respect.
I think this house just not built correctly
Yea I've been in a cat 3 and it's not that bad cat 4 is when there's actual problems
The guy is built correctly tho
Yep, I've been through Hurricane Ike and my house had no damage. It was still a Cat 2 when it crossed over Houston. I had 75 MPH sustained winds with gust close to 100 MPH. Other structures got damaged, but not my house or others in my neighborhood.
@@billybassman21 they might be talking about housing not meant to withstand a hurricane, like say you live really far up north, theres not gonna be hurricanes up there
@@MelonMan But there will be tornado's. A home should be able to withstand an EF3 tornado. It will probably have damage, but shouldn't need to be totally rebuilt.
here cuz of Florence. please Americans be safe i personally live in Europe but lm so worried
We've taken a lot of hits here in the US. We appreciate your love and concern friend. God bless.
Jimin_is_ bae I can tell you have a big heart. Thank you for genuinely caring ♥️
Well hey are you willing to help hurricane victims?
Thank you sweetie. I had to evacuate my house and I’m so worried about the damage :(
Taeistoocute On the bright side, if your home does get damaged, you won't :)
But, if you live in Florida you most likely have a concrete house like me. Which means the roof can still fall off and windows can break, so you don't really have to worry about you walls
Spencer Berlen I think all houses in florida are made of concrete. If not then we should do that...
I live in a concrete house in FL.

@Alena Vikernes666 You aren't kidding ! I have a cat 3 due to hit close to my area in 3 days (Delta) ! Hope it misses us again. Although, missing my area doesn't do much good for wherever it hits. We already had a cat 1 at the beginning of the year that hit my area almost directly, not to mention that biotch Laura that devastated Lake Charles.
@Alena Vikernes666 No, I haven't heard of that before either, just like a few other things that the weather service has "invented' lately. I love living on the coast, but if I were younger, I'd move away from Houma, to the Toledo bend area and live on a houseboat, or a camp on the lake. As of today, it looks like my area may have dodged yet another bullet, because Delta is forecast to hit near Lake Charles...WOW...but this hurricane BS has gotten OLD !
How this man can just calmly stand their while in the middle of these storms. It baffles me
