  • This is my first attempt at doing a solo thru hike in the Snowdonia National Park, Wales. The route I took is known as the #SnowdoniaWay, a 120 mile thru hike from Machynlleth to Conwy over 8 days.
Having started hiking in January 2020 this was going to be a huge challenge not only because of the task at hand but also as my training leading up to it was somewhat interrupted by the pandemic.
I learned so much about myself, hiking, navigation and the mental and physical endurance required for such a challenge.

Great, honest video. You did so well for a first solo backpack, because that is certainly not the easiest route you could choose! Having had a couple of planned walks go to pieces because of injury and overpacking, you do learn from your mistakes and come back mentally stronger and wiser. Keep on walking (when we all can again!)

Thank you! Its was a tough one but wouldn't change anything about it. I've already repacked a few times and got it down to 13.5kg which is far better. Happy Trails :)

Ah fella, great video! I did the exact same thing trying to find a camping spot in the Brecons, I walked off the path as the crow flies to a spot in the distance and got caught in a bog, just as the sun was going down. It really is such a humbling experience.

Nice one buddy thank you. Very humbling indeed and an experience I'm sure we would rather avoid. What ae he best spots for wild camping in the Brecons? ideally without the bogs :0)

Yo man, I tried the Snowdonia way in July last year. After sinking up to my chest in a bog and getting caught out in exposed areas during heavy lightning storms twice I had to call it a day. I'm going again this May, older, wiser and determined. I'm taking some mates with me this time, that encounter with the bog would have been hilarious and not terrifying had I had some people with me. Good luck on your next one.

Hey Buddy, Sounds very similar experience to mine. Going to go back out in June or July, and give it another go. Good luck this month if you heading out. let me know how you got on.

I really enjoyed your commentary, you're a natural. And a great, honest video. My daughter and I are walking it this summer - we have lots of experience of Snowdonia, 3 or 4 trips a year, but she's only just old enough to piece it all together.

Thank you very much. Snowdonia Way is going to be my redemption hike as soon as we are allowed back on the trial. Cant wait and maybe see you out there.

Wonderful video. It gave an excellent feel for the trail. What time of the year did you do this hike and would you recommend that time?

Enjoyed your video - difficult one for your first backpacking trip. There is a forest track directly down from the lake ( Llyn Diwaenydd). I presume the route was taking you over Moel Siabod towards Capel Curig. A gps map on your phone or a garmin watch with loaded routes are good in foggy conditions - gives you the confidence you are on the right track.

Cheers Dylan, Yeah it sure was for my first Thru hike. That's exactly the route I was "planning" on doing. Thanks for the tip... I made a lot of Rookie mistakes on the hike or should I say pre hike planning was a little sketchy at best :0)
