“20 Things that women should stop wearing after the age of 30: 1-20: the weight of other people’s expectations & judgement.” Do what you want. You’ve earned it. Happy birthday 🎉!
Thank you so much, Nic! I might be a little slow, but I am finally getting there! Thanks so much for following along with me. I look forward to seeing you in the comments! ❤
Gurl, I feel you! This year I turned 60 and I lost 115lbs, so none of my clothes fit. I had built up quite a fabric stash over the years and I decided to use it up on MYSELF! I decided against “aging gracefully” and ran with that it was better to just embrace my core philosophy of; “You can love me, you can hate me, but you will NOT ignore me.” So I turned my butt-length white hair into dreadlocks, decked my sun hat with dangling crystal prisms from the rim, and turned my wardrobe into a riot of colorful history and cultural bounding wonder! Black silk circle skirt with a 4 foot gold embroidery dragon appliqué? Sure! Full length red bandage dress with an embroidered golden phoenix? You betcha! Soft flowing pirate shirt with six inches of crocheted lace dripping from the collar and cuffs? Two, please! I can be easily picked out of any crowd in my ice blue dupioni Chanel-style suit with dark blue tie-dyed trim rocking my funky grandma style. EVERYONE talks to me, whether about my sartorial splendor or my Trans-flag decked out Sketchers, and I enjoy the discourse! Once you reach the age when YOU finally become YOU, and you no longer have to care about what other people think about you, it’s a wonderful life! Rock on!
Good for you! I bet you're fabulous in your colorful and fun clothes. I like the idea of the prism-bedecked sun hat. It must make some beautiful rainbows. I'm glad you have found what makes you happy and has brought people and connections into your life. That's what it's all about, I think. I hope you have a lovely rest of your weekend!❤❤❤
@@LaraSchiffbauer thank you so much! I try to bring the rainbows even without my sun hat! We shall rock in our silk and linen while making CoCo Chanel spin in her grave! I’m sure she didn’t have ME in mind when she was designing, but nothing rocks a suit like a tie-dyed color and cuffs!
1. Multiple channels for elastic in a waistband is 100% better than one big elastic 2. This was wonderful to listen to and I appreciate that you put your thoughts out there. When people talk about not wearing something because they are “of a certain age” in videos or in comments my brain immediately always goes “what does that mean?! What is a ‘certain age’?” Then I feel like I must just not “get it” because I’m younger than the people saying these things. When I started dying my hair with fashion colors I was worried that people would judge me and I’d stand out at toddler events and be a “weird mom” or something. But I wanted to do it and if people are judging my *hair color* and not how I treat and love my child, then that’s on them. Judging people by their appearance in every day life is getting to be very antiquated honestly. I get needing to be professional in certain setting, etc. but if you’re offended by what a 50-something year old is wearing at Target, then respectfully please get over yourself and examine your priorities. I really liked this discussion and I plan to continue wearing whatever I feel good in and dying my hair however I want, no matter how “old” I get. PS Happy Birthday!!
Thank you so much for the birthday wishes, and for letting me know you appreciated my thoughts. The certain age thing is definitely very subjective. I think I've used that term before, and I felt ancient. You are awesome for so many reasons, and if hair color or clothing sways someone from getting to know you, then it's there loss, for sure. It seems like everyone--like EVERYONE-feels like it's their right to share their opinions on everything. It's kind of exhausting. I wish people would just stop trying to extinguish other people's light. I hope you have a great rest of your weekend.❤❤❤
Thank you so much, T., and for the birthday wishes!! Aging is definitely not an easy thing to navigate, and it appears a lot of people feel the same! I hope you have a very lovely rest of your weekend!
Happy birthday! As we gain more years we hopefully let go of caring too much about what other people think about you. Feeling good in your skin wearing what you want to wear is priority number one.
Thank you so much Betty! That is definitely the journey I'm on right now, and I'm feeling grateful that others apparently have gone there before me, or on that journey with me. Thank you for watching and commenting, it really does mean a bunch to me! ❤
I just found your video. Age is just a number not how you feel. I am almost 90 but I feel younger. I wear what makes me happy not people's expectations of what a near 90 lady should wear. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND MANY MORE 🎉
Thank you so much! Congratulations to you for being a strong woman who does what she wants!! I really think fashion should be an expression of yourself, and not used to gatekeep people into judgmental categories. Thanks for stopping by today and having a little chat!❤
I love that you chose to talk about this Lara ❤ Thank you for sharing such personal and insightful thoughts on aging. Your outfit looks great! I love the tshirt fabric and the neckband is so well done! The pants have extra design details which make them unique, but at the same time, being in a solid black makes them very wearable with quite a variety of tops and jackets. Love the shoes!! Congrats on improving your health (no matter what age). I had to laugh at the train again 😂 Also, you are very lucky to have several beautiful parks nearby. Happy birthday 🙂
Hi, Michelle! Thank you so much for watching! I really love the pants, and having them made out of the stretch twill, they are just so comfy! I forgot to mention that I removed about an inch off the neckband and it went on like a dream. Yes, I think getting healthier was key to all the other things. I've noticed after I've worked out I feel stronger and that does wonders for my mental health. I'm like "I am woman, hear me roar" instead of "Oh no, now what." Yeah, the trains have become their own characters in my videos. I love all our parks. I'm going to have to do a couple more videos at Brickyard, because there's just that much to share in little snippets. Thanks for the birthday wishes!! 🥰
Lara, get the Docs! You can't go wrong! I love the outfit! And do you know that it is literally like the sun comes out when you smile? The thing about age is so true
Oh my gosh, Katinka! You are so sweet! 😊 Do you want me to pick up the pattern for the pants for you? I'd be more than happy to do so, you have been so kind to me it is the least I could do! Thank you for your ongoing friendship. You're so awesome. ❤❤❤
Lara, I agree with Grace, do what makes you happy! Right now my back is out and I'm seeing a chiropractor so I understand about back pain. Do what makes you happy my friend... And stop acting old. I like the idea of not acting old because I have found myself in a place where I've done that and it does not help me at all.
Oh, Zelda! I'm so sorry to hear about your back. I hope the chiropractor helps and you're all better quickly! Agree, acting old only makes a person feel miserable. I'm glad you were able to get yourself out of that emotional place and into doing what makes you happy. Sending a big virtual hug to you!❤
Thank you, Bonnie! I bought some knock off shoes, but maybe I'll go get some proper Doc Martens. :D Thanks for the birthday wishes and if you sew, I definitely recommend both patterns. I'm in love with those pants!! Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!
You’ve made some beautiful pieces! I’m sorry you had to have such thoughts swirled around in your head for so long. However, from very similar issues physically and emotionally I think I know what you’ve gone through! We’ve both wasted a bit of time! My daughter in law has said in my presence that women should learn how to dress appropriately for their age! I don’t dress inappropriately by any means, but it bothered me. Until, I literally decided that when clothing stores, and pattern companies, start labeling their products and hanging signs over their departments “over 40, over 50,60”, or “old ladies” I shall wear what I want! My knees, my chest and backside will still be covered, and the colors I wear will be of my choosing! I do look for those signs occasionally as I’m out and about! I hope you find a little humor in that! Happy birthday!🎉
Ouch! Your daughter-in-law's comment would have bothered me, too! But, you are right and she is wrong. I'm going to think about your signs when I'm looking at patterns! And when there is nothing on the pattern saying "for ages 60 and up" I'll just buy whatever I like! 🤭🤗☺
Thanks for your thoughts! That was really helpful even though I am 20 years older than you! Watching your sewing ideas has been amazing for my mental health. So cheers!🎉❤😊
I'm so happy to hear that you enjoy the things I've been making and today's video! I'm looking forward to the next several weeks because I've got fun ideas rattling around. Cheers back at you!!❤❤❤
Happy Birthday! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I'm feeling the transition of aging also. Your comment was what I needed to hear😊. Love your makes. I have the pattern for the pants and plan on making them soon. The description on the pattern said that they are hip, is this correct?
I'm so happy to hear that you are the one person that I was brave for!! It's not easy growing up, but let's both just live in joy and aging how we want instead of pandering to other people's ideas for what we should do or be!! The pants hit just below my waist, definitely not on my hips. I am kind of short waisted, but the rise seems pretty generous to me, so I think it would probably hit most people just below the waist, too. Thanks so much for the birthday wishes!!❤❤❤
Happy Birthday 🎉 I understand your angst about being “age appropriate,” but as long as you look good in what you’re wearing, GO FOR IT! I bought my first pair of Doc Martens (boots) last year to wear with wide leg jeans and I’m a mom with college grad children. It’s the styling that makes the difference. Never limit yourself because of age or by what you think others will say, just be your super amazing self and be confident in who you are 😊….great outfit!
Thank you so much for this wonderful comment! I'm glad you got the Doc's and are wearing them proudly! You are so right - styling makes a world of difference. Thank you so much for stopping over, watching and chatting a bit! ❤❤❤

Thank you so much Grace, for the birthday wishes and the ongoing support! You're the best. ❤

Great topic! We don’t talk about aging enough because it’s hard!!!
It IS hard!!! Each life transition has it's own challenges and ageism never helps anything! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. ❤❤❤

Lara, I love your tee and pants. You look great in them. I will definitely pick up those patterns.🥰
Can't recommend them enough!!☺
The outfit looks great on you and happy birthday! I appreciated your thoughts on youth as well.

@LaraSchiffbauer wow, that would be awesome, thank you. But just remember, I don't expect anything, (maybe just a collaboration in our near future 😁)
