- Being a videogame hero is way harder than being a villain, because heroes have a code against killing, or some such nonsense. Thankfully, some videogames take the hard work out of our hands by coming up with highly convenient excuses for why the stuff we’re doing that definitely looks like first degree murder, is actually non-lethal, so we can go about our day with a clear conscience. Really love that theory. The only flaw in it is that the world's greatest detective would definitely catch on since you can't really hide hundreds of deaths, even in Gotham City.

the electricly charged batmobile is the silliest thing ever. Especially when you're in car mode and hit thugs. "It's fine! The car shocks them so they don't die!" as if that negates the effects of plowing into someone at 60+ mph.
And, y'know, visibly flinging them through the air.
I think the implication is supposed to be that the shock actually hits them and pushes them away before the the Batmobile actually collides with them, I think the hitbox for the shock is slightly bigger than the Batmobile probably for that reason. Still pretty out there and as shown you can blow things up in front of them and run their bodies over and that still supposedly doesn't kill them, not to mention the explosive gell and literally causing ceilings and walls to fall on people that's been a thing since Asylum.
@@GodOfOrphans But they're still subject to the forces of inertia (and what ever they hit after the Batmobile launches them). Getting 'pushed away' at those speeds in itself would kill a person. I love Arkham Knight, but the electric field contrivence is plain stupid.

Funny thing about Superman, he actually both dreads and looks forward to fighting someone who is closer to his power level than a normal person. Dreads it cause there's gonna be collateral damage if he can't lure them out of a populated area, looks forward to it because he doesn't have to hold back his punches and worry about killing them.
I'm watching the 90's Superman Animated series now and I can definitely see that Superman thinking that way.
@@crocbattle07 Batman too, when he fights a super powered being, he can hit them as hard as he wants, heck he needs to if he wants to knock them out or exhaust them cause he's in no danger of killing them with punches and kicks, he's a normal human.

Fun fact regarding Spider-Man's strength:
At one point in the comics, a dying Doc Ock switched minds with Peter Parker. Upon gaining the body and powers of Spider-Man, Doc Ock was confronted by Scorpion, one of Spider-Man's villains. Doc Ock punched Scorpion in the face, but didn't realise how powerful he now was, and knocked off Scorpion's lower jaw. Doc Ock then realised that Spider-Man had been pulling his punches all along, and could have easily killed Doc Ock and all his other enemies with just a few blows.
Superior Spider-Man. Great story.
Also at one point spiderman literally punches through kingpins chest and out of the other side
And Kane literally uses the wall crawling abilities to rip peoples faces off of their skulls

Always wondered why Batman didn’t just sever the Joker’s spinal column such that he would survive but become a quadriplegic. Imagine that maniacal laugh being interrupted so he could blow into a tube to move his wheelchair.
@@joeschmo3844 Actually he has, the issue is that Joker pretty much just gets healed by a secret lazurus pit. In the Arkhamverse he just gets better somehow.

The later Assassin’s Creed’s: your not killing anyone, your just watching somebody’s ancestor kill someone. It’s history, there’s nothing you can do about it.
Which contradicts the earlier games where the specific reason you're doing it is to gain experience in killing people so that you become used to it in the present.

Ah yes, the "moral choices" of the later AC franchise. Except: it's replaying a specific memory, so any choice is an illusion and whatever the player chooses is the in-universe unalterable reality.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance has a codec conversation in which it is explained that it’s unusual that the cyborgs you defeat are exploding, as they should just be shutting down to allow the human brains inside them to be recovered and put into a new body. It’s explained that they are probably set to self destruct if unable to defend themselves to prevent capture, so they are dying, but it’s not because of you.

in the comics peter does pull his punches, to the point that during a storyline where doc oc was in control of spidermans body he accidentally punched scorpions lower jaw off, because of how much stronger he was.
Otto literally realises that Spiderman was consciously choosing not to kill everyone he faught.

The victims Batman beats/hangs into unconsciousness have lower than average heartbeats. This can be due to bradycardia (lower than average heartbeat) or the fact they're dying from internal injuries.
I always figured 30 BPM was unhealthy for someone, even if they were just beaten unconscious.
@@kinyt3887 they're probably definitely dying, but a low heart rate isn't always a bad thing.
In fact, quite the opposite: most athletes have low heart rates because their heart is more efficient at pumping blood. Usain Bolt's actually has a resting heart rate of 33 BPM. At the other end, resting heart rates above 70 and definitely 80 BPM are considered unhealthy.
Again though, while I'm certain the goons are somewhat physically fit, i highly doubt they're potential Olympians levels of fit. So i still agree they're probably dying.

One of the coolest moments in Yakuza 7 is a fight against Kiryu. Kiryu has canonically never fought or even (physically) harmed a woman, so he will ignore both female characters in this fight.

Hey, Kiryu never killed anyone. He just stabbed a knife into their gut, and then kneed the handle end of the knife to drive it in deeper.
That time in the first game where he shot a helicopter out of the sky in a burning heap? Everyone walked away from that fine. Also the countless people he shot off of moving motorcycles earlier that same day.
Not only Kiryu. But Majima, Saejima.....No, the real murderers in this game series all die. But YOU, yes, YOU, the one who smashes the person into the ground the same way Shazam did in this vid, you're not a killer, of course ;))))

Saejima is a freaking monster (who I think is MUCH stronger than Kiryu). And yet he never killed anyone somehow. Pfffft

Tbf he is a child soldier, trained to kill since he was a kid.
I enjoy that instead of the standard bit where a bad guy goes all YOU REALLY ARE A KILLER LIKE ME and the hero screams in defiance, instead of failing to convince him he's a killer they succeed far more than they could have possibly hoped for, accidentally make him come to terms with his murderous past and ways, then all get slaughtered because of it.

Cyborg enemies can be taken out non-lethally in MGRR. You essentially have to lop off their limbs and leave them as wiggling torsos. They can then be recovered from the battle site and get new limbs installed. The only cyborgs you have to kill are the Winds of Destruction.

So many games and movies ruin that part of Batman's character in my opinion. They also don't go with how Batman literally refuses to call the villains by their aliases because he feels that in doing so he'll just be further fuelling their psychosis and how he literally wants to help the villains he comes up against and always tries to see the good in people.
I agree 100% I don't know how you feel about the killing part but I think that that also ruins his character Batman stand for justice and like you said aims to help them when he can of course he fights because well it's kind of hard to talk to someone when they are trying to kill you not to mention in the comics it shows how Batman learned many none lethal martial arts skills so he could be as save as possible when it comes to his no killing rule I actually do plan on making a video about why it sucks when Batman kills and debunk a lot of the arguments people have
@@mrjackelbox4418 a lot of people think Batman is stupud for having that rule because they don't realize that he is still one of the most skilled heroes of the DC universe, even if he doesn't have any super powers. They also don't realize just why Batman has that rule in the first place. He believes that if he does something like kill the Joker, then he may not be able to stop himself from killing other criminals. There's also actually an arc in one of the comics about the Riddler wanting to do one last crime and trying not t o leave any riddles but not being able to because of the way that his mind works. When Batman is explaining this to him it causes him to realize that he really does need help and turns himself in so that he can get it. I'd actually like it if for games with Batman if they would make games that focus more on the part about him being the best detective then actual combat because I'm personally not interested in games like the Arkham series but I would love a game like this.

I recall one Spider-Man show actually have Peter wonder why none of the goons he fights ever go down after one hit since he has the "proportional strength of a spider" and acts like they just got hit by a normal teenager.

He does it consciously and subconsciously as well. He knows he can hurt people so he tries not to. Because he’s so use to that it’s hard for him to actually try to hurt someone
The fact that Andy was able to go this whole video without mentioning YAKUZA is an admirable show of restraint.
I love how, as Batman, you can knock an enemy over a ledge in game-unintentional ways, causing what would be a fatal fall.

As it's a Doom mod, all the weapons function exactly like the standard Doom weapons, except that they fire teleportation rays. Of course, the rocket launcher equivalent still harms you if you're caught in the blast.
Although given that your enemies are made of slime, I'm not sure bullets would do much.
3:54 in the Arkham gam series, you can cut the ropes on an inverted takedown by throwing batarangs at them, though the game still tells you they're uncinscious.
I would have to point to the Yakuza series and it's classic Rubber Bullets. And by extension Rubber knives, swords, pavement, vehicles, and explosions.
Even rubber bullets are occasionally fatal
Those rubber explosions sound like a lot of fun at parties.
Regarding Batman, a lot of the finishers would be lethal, especially the throat crushers, the head trauma and that inelastic bunjee...
I remember quite a few of them just ragdolling down some ledge nearby after taking them down in Arkham Asylum. Didn't see any life saving spiderwebs there either.

Goddamn the pve mode looked interesting as hell, and was supposed to be made free at some point. Perhaps in another world where thr battle royal mode flopped we got to see the pve games

I know it's a stupid thing to argue about lol, but in the original manual, it actually says that the toads were turned into the unbreakable blocks that give you power-ups and coins.
This has been debunked though, so no he doesn't.

Here's a suggestion for the inevitable commenter edition of this list - the Pax mod for guns in Cyberpunk 2077. There's something quite weird about your bullets magically becoming non-lethal because of a mod on your gun.
Non-lethal katanas and mantis-blades are even more impressive :D At least you can say Pax bullets are targeted towards kneecaps all the time.

Superhero 1: Dude, you just, like, killed him!
Superhero 2: No I didn't. The game just said that I only knocked him unconscious. It's totally different.
Whenever there's a game which gives you a choice between killing an enemy and knocking them out and there's even a slight chance it be important later on, I *always* double check the status bar of each KO'd enemy to see if it says "unconscious" or "deceased", because it's often very easy to accidentally do the latter and you can't even tell. That's one of the most frustrating game design critiques for me.
See if you can find Pete Holmes/CollegeHumor's "Batman vs. The Penguin (with Patton Oswalt)". Everyone's just horrified at Batman killing a dude but he insists "no, Alfred told me they're just sleeping." It's pretty great.

You've never seen one of Batman's inverted takedowns get cut down?! Every single time I do one, one of the other thugs immediately shoots the rope and drops them!

There have been MANY times where spidey didn’t attach the web gadget. I have literally jumped off of a building and fell the whole way with the guy to the ground.
I was trying to show my buddy the mechanic, and ended up batista bombing a guy onto the pavement from a roof top.

In Arkham Knight, the enemies DO cut their friends down if you wait a moment or two. That's assuming you didn't use a baterang to cut them down yourself.
They literally have to since they have to check on their friends. Also Medics have to revive them.

There is a game called "The Cycle" that does something very similar to Fortnite to justify "not killing" your opponents in the very much lethal battle royale game.
In the game lore, players are contractors working for 3 space companies competing for contracts down in Pandora, a Planet with very hostile wildlife and deadly radioactive storms. So the in-game lore to justify the entire lack of labor rights for the contractors when they shoot each other with rocket launchers when competing for said contracts is to cover the players upon dying with some very sciency protective foam, that also keeps you safe from the aforementioned wildlife and storms supposedly for long enough to have a rescue vehicle come to pick you up some other day once the storm recedes. Curiously no contracts are ever about rescuing these lost contractors from previous matches, which take place according to lore, every time it's possible to land on the planet because of the storm receding... So god knows when are the rescue missions taking place... if ever.
Considering the fact that most of those heroes live in the US it make them much more cruel them the villians since they leave his enemies with life crushing medical debt instead of killing them 😆

It's not that Batman would be "no better than his enemies", it's that Batman would be way better than his enemies at killing people.
I'm pretty sure he actually trains with firearms and lethal techniques so he knows *full well* what would kill a person, and then purposefully avoids doing that.
Yeah that “spiderman is one of the strongest” stuff hasn’t been true for 50+ years. He is wayyyyyy stronger than a human, average mutants etc but there are so many dozens and dozens of heroes who are stronger

Previously, I was a bit disappointed Dizzy had been left out of a video containing a variety of cool one-shot finishers from Guilty Gear (especially because it's definitely one of the absolute coolest). Now I am happy to see not only how it was otherwise used, and the fact that it's literally the least 'this is totally not fatal, we assure you, no matter how it looks' of all of them. Well, besides maybe Batman's thing with the bats.
For the T-800, I keep thinking of that moment in the film where he shoots that one security guard in the legs and follows it with the comment "He'll live." directed at John Connor's panicked face. So you can shoot a guy several times without killing him, the film even says so.

I played the NES version of Terminator 2. They solved the "not killing people" issue by having him just punch everyone until they stopped moving. When you do get a gun, you shoot fences and the t100. Fence murder is apparently fine.
The fences had it coming. They're all "yeah you can get to the other side, but you'll have to walk around because it's good for you."

I would love to see someone do the math on the acceleration of the bodies after being punched in the head to determine force in the spider man game. I have a sneaking suspicion it would be very very lethal.
Search for Game theory "spiderman will leave you broken" on TH-cam. They calculated the force needed for his webs to throw someone at a wall and the uppercut. It's quite interesting

In assassin's creed odyssey, you could use your super strong exploding shot ability with "non-lethal" arrows.
I think something we're missing with the spiderman one, is that spiders absolutely do web up and hang their enemies after defeating them, but it ain't to save them.
less lethal shotgun rounds do exist, they're usually made of rubber instead of metal.
Rubber bullets definitely can kill.
Of course, the important word is “less”, not “not”. Rubber can still kill that way.

Rubber may be softer and less dense than lead reducing penetration but if propelled at similar velocities to a 'lethal' round , the concussive impact is enough to break bones and cause internal haemorrhaging that if left untreated can kill.
Just think. If a car going from 40mph to 0mph in the fraction of second is enough to kill, just think what effect an object a fraction of the size going from 60 metres/s to 0 is going to have in the same circumstances

@@marhawkman303 dumbest explanation ever. Most of the pokemon that faint are wild, so that's not a thing. Also, if you "knock out" a unique pokemon, they don't just "faint" but are never seen again. You do the math.

How about any of the non-lethal taser weapons in any of the WatchDogs games, especially in WatchDogs Legion? I’m pretty sure getting shot at with any form of electricity is actually pretty deadly to you but when these weapons are used the enemy will be unconscious as your profiler app will tell you, no matter how many times you shoot them even when they’re already on the ground they’ll still be unconscious.

In the Arkham games the invisible walls don't always work. I once punched a goon in the underground sewer city (I forget which game) and the goon ragdolled underneath the water. Detective vision assured me that he was "unconscious" and not "drowning", but I suspect Alfred may have tampered with detective vision to spare Bruce's conscience.

One of my personal favorites is the cat-like reflexes of all the pedestrians in La Noire. The residents of Los Angeles were all able to impressively fling themselves out of the way of Detective Phelps’ police car. While vehicular manslaughter is nothing the rockstar pedigree is shy about it would have somewhat undermined Cole Phelps’ “good cop” narrative.

11:12 So I've never played guilty gear... However I do play Epic 7 and there is a guilty gear crossover. In the story for this crossover Sol and Baiken explain to Dizzy that while violence is bad sometimes the only way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to fight back. Dizzy agrees that she can't always run away and that she is going to have to fight, but she will avoid it if possible and she will never kill anyone. Also she was banned in pvp for a long time because of how quickly she can knock out whole teams in Epic 7. So as Peter Parker would say "With great power..." (and yes her instant kill move is in Epic 7)

In the comics Superman actually developed something similar that will give a Human Kryptonian powers temporarily. So it's not unprecedented. this is actually LESS powerful since it is only the strength and toughness, maybe reflexes too.

In the late, lamented MMO City of Heroes, defeated villains were "teleported away to jail" - regardless of whether you defeated them with your fists, or a katana, or an assault rifle, or a telekinetically-hurled forklift...
I always wondered why they couldn't just teleport a few right away after their crimes, so my character could go get a smoothie or something.
Something that passed unnoticed by Insomniac Games in the Spider-man game: Spiderman can use Man-hole covers and other hard materials to hit people.
While he won't "kill" anyone by throwing them off the ledge of a high building, he definetely can cause life-treathning injuries with metal and/or concrete objects
To be fair the injustice one is based of the comic book series injustice where Superman goes evil and makes super strength pills for his soldiers and Batman gets a hold of them and mass produces them for his group.
Nope, it started in the game. The comics were made as a tie-in, meant to explain more of the plot and 'explain' some of the contrivances.

Saint's Row IV. All those civilians you've blown up, shot, and generally murderized throughout most of the game? No worries, they're computer simulations and not real people.
To be fair to them, they did witness the Earth being completely obliterated before they were stuck in the simulation.
In the pokemon games the titular creatures never die in battle they only faint and have to be taken to a pokemon centre to be revived. The creator of the series actually preferred a non-lethal KO system because of the abundance of pointless violence in video games.
I had a feeling of deja vu when watching this, and now I have found why: There were two videos with 7 'non-lethal' takedowns / options in late 2017, which, in addition to the general theme, already had the Batman/Arkham and the MK vs. DCU games.
Of course Batman appears in the nonlethal handwave excuse list 3 separate times
