The Hyper Beam from "Super Metroid" on the SNES is such a weapon; you get it during the second half of the last battle, it absolutely devestates the final boss (Mother Brain), and will blow up previously indestructible walls as you escape from planet Zebes in the end... So you have it for like, 5 minutes tops.

In Splatoon 2's Hero Mode campaign, you fight through DJ Octavio's first 3 phases with the Hero Shot and standard Hero Mode abilities. However, as you enter the fourth phase, Sheldon requests you use a modified Rainmaker, a chargeable missile launcher, and ride on some ride rails to defeat the Octobot, as the Spicy Calamari Inkantation plays in the backround, courtesy of that girl who just got shot in the head by a high-powered sniper rifle. It's more obscure, but for me it was Wing Commander on the SNES. The ships you start out with have weaker guns but have the longest range and take the least amount of energy. Later you get "upgraded" to strong guns, but they have short range and run out of energy quick. I always preferred the original ships with their blue balls... of energy.

Me, a fan of Arthurian legends whenever someone says Arthur pulled Excaliber from the stone. It was not “Excaliber, the King’s Sword” it was “Caliburn, the Sword in the Stone”. When Arthur broke Caliburn, Merlin took the sword and Arthur to the lake to have it reforged into Excaliber. The names even tell which they are - Caliburn (likely derived of Latin word “chalybs”) means “steel” while Excaliber means “cut-steel”.
Edit: okay, so a lot of yall have been saying that in this version of the myth that they are the same sword. In this version, that’s not entirely true. The version I’m most familiar with, and likely the same version that the game is referencing, treats the reforging as a rebirth, a reflection of Arthur’s maturity from a boy to a real king. It’s reflected in the names, when the sword is reforged it receives the title “the King’s Sword” instead of retaining its former title “the Sword in the Stone.” I guess should have been more specific, but I figured it was clear by the change in name and title.

      Caladbolg. Hardened lightning.
Still better than Dyrnwyn, from -Bewitched- an Arthurian legend surrounding Merlin. The sword's magical property was it would burst into flame. Sounds awesome, right? Except that when the blade did ignite-- which it did when held by anyone other than its rightful owner (Merlin's brother-in-law, by the way)-- _reality ensued._ Dyrnwyn was literally too hot to handle.

but here's the kicker: if you save it for a later battle, where you are forced to fight the dragon warrior's sister, you can use it to knock HER down to one HP, allowing you to defeat her on one round!

For me, I just though that was the most fun one-use weapon in the games, especially since I felt it was more interactive than the Apple, which was more "raise hand holding it and everyone dies". This is a stretch, but in "Metal Arms: Glitch in the System" you have a mechanic which allows you to hijack and remote control enemy robots. The first part of the final boss fight actually has you hijack the big bad himself, who's invulnerable and the size of an office building, and you get to have a blast just stomping every single enemy in the game that tries to swarm you in a panic when they realize their general has been taken over. Spoilers for Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines:
In VTM Bloodlines, the final fight is against the Sheriff, a rather large vampire. In stage one, he teleports around the map (usually behind you) and slashes at you with what is basically a Buster sword, the same sword he used to behead your sire at the beginning of the game. Then he turns into a giant bat and carries you out onto the rooftop of the Venture tower. In the Plus version of the Unofficial Patch, if you look through the rubble where he dropped you, you can find his sword. The item description is "You shouldn't have this! But now you do."
It's not hugely overpowered, but it does have much greater range than the other swords in the game, which makes it useful for getting rid of the vampire minions that keep running after you while you're trying to deal with the Sheriff.

    I've got one for this.
In the game Tales of Symphonia for gamecube, PS2, and later re-released with its meh sequel as a collection on PS3, there is a set of 9 weapons, one for each of the party members, called the Devil Arms. You pick these up throughout the game as a side quest, at the end of which you fight the hardest boss in the game Abyssion. After the grueling boss fight which is nigh impossible with 1 player, you unlock these weapons'full potential. They show negative stats when you equip them, but in combat, they deal as much damage per hit as the character associated with that weapon has gotten in the game. And this damage only goes up in subsequent play through, as the new game + option gives you the option to keep your combat data from the previous game, including all stored kills. Which means, that these weapons have the potential to deal thousands of damage per hit if you store your combat data for multiple games in a row. However, you get the very last Devil Arm weapon, which I believe is the greaves weapon, in the very last stage of the game in pretty much the end sequence of the game, meaning that you can only engage the Abyssion boss fight shortly before the final boss fight, at which point, theres almost no reason to use them.

    • @nuffin7411
      @nuffin7411 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

From a pure damage per hit perspective, yes. However, the Bow of Light doesn't require ammunition and is unbreakable (so no need for spares). And you can theoretically also use attack boost food with it, so that part doesn't factor into it at all.
Fun fact: A glitch exists in the game that allows players to keep the bow when starting a new game after getting it in the Beast Ganon fight (together with everything else from your inventory). It's just a pain to set up.

At this stage in the game, most weapons had a 60-90 base damage; this weapon has *199* base damage (at the cost of -80 speed and requiring 3 EN per turn to use). I gave it to the main character, whose special (Boost) attacks let him do even more damage with the weapon against the Big Zam. Never used it again, simply because all of the bosses after this point were simply too fast to reasonably use it against them).

In Neverwinter Nights 2 you learn that the mysterious shards you're seeking along with other people are pieces of the Silver Sword of Gith (one of these pieces is embedded in your body somewhere) but you only get to put it together for the very last dungeon of the game where it is necessary to finish the battle against the Guardian.
This is a legendary artifact, and I'm not just talking about within the universe. The Silver Sword of Gith ranks up there with the Book of Exalted Deeds, the Tome of Vile Deeds, Vecna's Hand, Vecna's Eye, the Sword of Kas, the Orbs of Dragonkind, and other such One-Ring scale artifacts which most D&D players don't encounter in an actual game but only ever hear about.
Then, in the sequel, Mask of the Betrayer, the first thing you discover on waking up is that it has been stolen from you and thus you don't get to access all it's wonderful powers.

Video idea: times when "narrative consonance" was achieved through a brilliant combination of story and gameplay. Examples off the top of my head would be Undertale (and it's lesson about choice and consequence in a world that will never know your wrongdoings mirroring how you can save and reload any game), Hades (in its perfect explanation as to how you get infinite attempts to break out of hell, as well as an easier difficulty setting because you're an actual god), and Celeste (where the protagonist overcoming great hardship is the driving force behind your determination to see the journey through).

The complete Nobitsura Kage from the 2013 _Shadow Warrior_ reboot. You spend the whole game pursuing the pieces of this legendary blade, and you get the final piece at the very end of the penultimate level, finally assembling the legendary sword that can literally kill gods. I wouldn't be so salty if you could keep the completed blade in new game plus mode, but no, even in new game plus, you start with a basic sword.
